A good entry. The layout & size of the ring was not ideal for our long Skye Terriers & some of the dogs were clearly not comfortable with it. I was strongly reminded that each dog is judged ‘on the day’.
Many of the dogs were excellent indeed, but there were also some with unsatisfactory angulation fore &/or aft & some were too short, ie height to length ratio could be better.
The major cause for concern was however when rib to loin ratio did not fulfil the requirement of the Standard. The Skye has a long back that should be level & not dip, both on the move & on a natural stand. This is mainly achieved by the dog having a deep & long ribcage plus a short, strong loin. A short rib plus a long loin means weakness in the construction & potential danger of back problems. Most bites were satisfactory, but a few dogs had dirty teeth. A build up of plaque is not only unsightly in a show dog but also detrimental to good health & can lead to painful gum disease, even teeth loss.
Temperaments were excellent without exception. Not one single murmur was heard despite them all having such a thorough examination – that would not always have been the case when I came into the breed nearly 40 years ago.
So, well done kids!
