A very pleasing entry in terms of the depth of quality overall & I was delighted to see my BP go on to RBPIS.
I was looking for exhibits that were constructed to conform to my interpretation of the Standard, lathy, with strength & balance, with a slightly greater length to height, & there were a few who, despite their obvious quality, were a little too heavy set & short coupled for me.
One major disappointment, however, was the high proportion of dogs whose muscletone was poor. Slack muscles down the shoulder resulted in a lot of loose elbows & weaving & plaiting movement in front, while flabby thighs produced some weak hind action & lack of drive & lift. One or two lacked a little infill under the eyes, resulting in weaker foreface than I would like.
For me, a Bedlington has to be constructed & conditioned so that it would be capable of doing the job it was originally bred for, whether it is ever asked to carry out the job or not, & I fear that some of this entry would not have been able to, good as they might have appeared from the ringside. Coats in the main were surprisingly good, in terms of texture & colour – no need to look at nose colour to separate the blues from the livers in this entry, I was pleased to note. Only a couple of level bites, otherwise mouths were good.
Minor Puppy Dog (1)
1 Phillips’ Rathsrigg Ask Him, beautifully constructed, first class head with good length of foreface, strong muzzle & big teeth, good length of neck into well laid shoulder, deep flat ribs, correctly placed arch over loin & correctly angulated quarters. A bit erratic on the move at times but true when he settled to the job in hand, & one I would be pleased to take home. BPD.
Puppy Dog (2)
A lot to like about both these young lads, both with virtues to appreciate.
1 Mumford’s Tarw Gelli, won on overall balance, good shoulder placement, deep ribs, better hindquarters than 2 & with a coat of first class colour & texture. Would prefer a little more length of loin. Moved with lift & drive;
2 Carter’s Betjemansorn Tango of Chizlewhips, had the sort of horseshoe front that we see too rarely now, good for size & in good coat. Felt he was a little too overdone in head, cheek muscles too heavy, but with an excellent mouth. Not quite as positive in front movement.
Junior Dog (3)
1 Green’s Miteymidgets Harry Hopkins, took my eye as he entered the ring, soundly constructed & presenting a pleasing outline, up to size, but well balanced, lovely masculine head with small, dark triangular eye giving a perfect expression, well set ears & strong muzzle, good mouth. A little loose in elbow at the moment, maturity should sort this out. Flat, deep ribs & correctly arched loin of good length;
2 Ames’ Sharnor Blue Diamond, nicely put together, well balanced & of good type. Coat a little softer than 1, but thick & beautifully presented. Not quite as accurate on the move as 1;
3 Heraty’s Inglemaric Make My Day.
Post Graduate Dog (6,1a)
1 Crump’s Elizdrew Lucky Jim, big enough, but well proportioned. Good head, masculine without coarseness, dark, deep set eye & well placed thin ears, good mouth, balanced angulation, deep ribs carried well back, moved OK;
2 Mumford’s Beaconslight Clearly Great, smaller dog, beautifully put together, in excellent coat & super hard condition, nicely constructed all through & moved well. Overall body condition won him this place;
3 Button’s Harrisclub Flash Harry.
Limit Dog (5,1)
Very little to choose between the first three, all top quality dogs.
1 Owen’s Bisbee Blue Max, lovely for size, masculine head, deep, dark eye, thin ears & good mouth, strong neck into well laid shoulders, good horseshoe front, deep, flat ribs & correctly angulated quarters, good length of well muscled loin with correctly placed arch, moved well & was a serious contender in the challenge;
2 Walshaw’s Janmark Alannora, close up to 1, could change places another time. Not quite the shoulder placement of 1, just a little upright in upper arm. Deep ribs, correct length of loin with good hind angulation. Really a hair splitting decision between these two;
3 Caines’ Burmington And Me Too.
Open Dog (7,2)
Difficult class, which gave me a great deal of pleasure & also some problems, as there was so much to like about all, & an abundance of quality, which meant some very close decisions.
1 Jones’ Pengerrig Iron Duke, hard to fault for construction, type & balance, in good dark, thick coat of the correct texture & in firm condition, nice for size, masculine all through with long, lean head & strong jaw, eyes of correct shape & colour & deep set, well placed ears & perfect mouth completed a lovely head. Good length of neck, muscular, leading into well laid shoulder with correct width across front, deep flat ribs & nice length of loin with topline held standing & on the move. Moved true. CC;
2 Bannister’s Miteymidgets Mighty Cobra, excellent conformation, masculine yet elegant, good head & general balance & type, first class movement, well handled & presented. Not quite the coat of 1 but a close second. RCC;
3 Garbutt’s Ch Aireview Reprint.
Puppy Bitch (3)
1 Graham’s Ruffsfurze Mavrodaphne, what a lovely young lady, on her final outing as a puppy I gather. Full of quality, long head & powerful but retaining her femininity, excellent mouth & sleepy expression, nice length of neck into well laid shoulder, good width across chest, deep ribs & correct length of loin, well angulated quarters, stood on the best of legs & feet, moved true from all directions, steady, with lift & drive. Coat of decent colour & texture. BP & RBPIS;
2 Owen’s Bisbee Bobby Dazzler, well proportioned, feminine & oozing quality. Not quite the shoulder angulation of 1. Just a shade upright, otherwise of beautiful conformation & in good coat. On the move, she just wobbled a fraction on the hocks;
3 Godden’s Seaofiron Where Angels Play.
Junior Bitch (4,1)
1 Bannister’s Miteymidgets Matilda, just my type, everything I was looking for with correct conformation, quality, balance, lathy & strong, looking & feeling as if she could do a day’s work without losing any of her femininity. Long, lean head, well filled under the eye, sleepy expression, perfect mouth & well set ears, moved absolutely true whichever way I looked at her & held a good topline standing & on the move, in good coat, well presented. RCC;
2 Davies’ Honeymist Polkadots, lovely little girl, well constructed & in good coat, feminine head with good length of foreface, filled under the eye, shoulder angulation good. A little apprehensive in this hall & tensed up standing, which made her rear angulation appear a little exaggerated. When relaxed, she lengthened & looked more balanced, light & springy movement when she settled;
3 Ross’ Honeymist Gaviota.
Novice Bitch (2)
1 Gillies’ Rhicullen Ghillie’s Lass, nice colour & texture coat, in good condition, decent head proportions with lovely expression, well put together, won class on overall better movement;
2 Godden’s Makems Honky Tonk Woman, nicely balanced & feminine, decent construction. Just lost out on hind movement, going a little close behind.
Post Graduate Bitch (6,3)
Three well matched for quality, all with a lot to offer, could well change places another day.
1 Collier’s Mollora Little Rosie, looked a picture standing & on the move with a correct topline held throughout. Just coming back into coat, a little pale but still thick & of decent texture. Good angulation & the right length to height ratio, in good muscular condition, which resulted in true movement, light, lifting & effortless. Had a different young handler in the challenge who presented her very well & made the best of her attributes;
2 Thompson’s Jetsway Absolut Blue, such a feminine girl but not lacking strength. Long, lean head, sleepy expression, good length of neck into correct shoulders, deep flat ribs, carried well back & nice length of loin, firm quarters. Light & true movement won her this place;
3 Noades’ Sanedo Gypsy’s Dream.
Limit Bitch (10,4)
What a lovely class, teeming with quality right down the line.
1 Collier’s Miteymidgets Cruiser, beautifully presented as ever, & so well handled by her young handler. Long head with eye of correct shape & placement, perfect mouth & well set ears, correct length of neck, decent shoulders & flat ribs, good width across chest & excellent proportions, nicely angulated quarters & true movement, head carriage particularly good, held herself very well, keeping a correct topline standing & on the move;
2 Wharton-Smith & Smith’s Miteymidgets Shooting Star, very typy bitch. Just lost out slightly on width across the chest, which made her movement not quite so positive coming towards me. In lovely condition, keeping a good topline;
3 Bouse’s Tredomen Tar Baby.
Open Bitch (7,1)
One of the nicest classes I have judged for a long time, full of quality right to the end of the line-up & needing some hair splitting decisions.
1 Phillips’ Rathsrigg April Rose, I loved this one as a puppy & saw no reason to alter my opinion now that she’s matured. Beautifully constructed & of correct proportions, as one would expect from these breeders, typy, lathy & oozing quality, good for size, feminine head, beautiful expression with excellent length of neck, correct angulation, no exaggeration anywhere, in good dark jacket of correct texture, & the best mover in the class. No hesitation in giving her CC & BOB;
2 Morrice’s Mollora Fancy Pants, one I have admired from ringside, did not disappoint on handling. Head of first class shape & proportion with perfect mouth, well constructed throughout & another excellent mover, considered her for the RCC. Just lost out on coat, but a top quality exhibit;
3 Bannister’s Miteymidgets Myaquila.
