Airedale Terriers
There was quite a good entry of 78 from 73 dogs which certainly made for an interesting morning.
It is always an honour to judge at this very special show for terrier folk.
Front movement was so very disappointing & quite a few lacked drive in hind action. Undocked curly tails are not a pretty sight but perhaps in time a more attractive & erect carriage can be achieved
as Airedales are blessed with some very clever & experienced breeders.
The ring was located in the noisy annex & a few of the youngsters did not much like their outing.
Temperaments were steady, a few had poor coats & presentation but they were in the minority. Low set tails are a pet hate of mine & unfortunately I did have some of those. As a breed Airedales do have a lot to live up to being labelled
‘the king of terriers’ which conjures up a picture of a handsome, noble looking dog with a proud carriage,
a confident attitude & terrier spirit.
MINOR PUPPY DOG (2)
1 Hacker & Jenkins’ Sherifs Midnight Rambler, nearly 7 months, after a shaky start he more or less settled down although still a bit perplexed by it all. Quality head, shapely outline, good quarters, fit & well conditioned.
Needs ring practise & to improve in front action;
2 Ward’s Howlett Firecracker, 8 months, bit plain in head, low set tail, lacked strength & drive in hind movement,
carrying a bit of surplus puppy fat. Good bone. Front movement poor.
PUPPY DOG (2)
1 BP, Turner’s Crillee Cool As Jack, 11 months plus, handsome young man, no mistaking his sex, masculine head, well carried ears, very good outline, used his neck standing & moving, crisp coat, fit & healthy. Not mad about his curly tail;
2 H Firecracker.
JUNIOR DOG (4,2a)
1 Ventress’ Junaken Vaidrian, big framed stallion looking dog, needs to grow into his topline. Big quarters, all male head, moved OK behind but needs to improve in front action;
2 Brown’s Dendaric Viking, something spooked him in the corner of the ring. Short back, typical head & expression.
Just not relaxed enough to show consistently, a pity.
NOVICE DOG (1)
1 Jackson & Swash’s Jokyl Flash Gordon, 12 months, quality youngster, hard & fit, keen expression, well carried ears,
clean neck, firm topline, moved well behind but room for improvement in front.
POST GRADUATE DOG(4,1)
1 Collins & Curran’s Collcurr Courageous, easy winner, good size & type, decent head, dark eyes, muscular neck,
excellent bone & body, natural showman, moved quite well;
2 Martin’s Saredon Fire Warrior at Tobadale, 6 years, in good condition, well muscled with good depth of body.
A bit plain in head. Adequate mover once he found his right speed;
3 Ward’s Whitby Twister.
LIMIT DOG (9,1w/d)
1 CC & BOB, Jackson & Swash’s Jokyl Summer Storm, won a good class, liked him very much, so short backed with excellent tail set & carriage, deep chest, masculine head without coarseness, dark eyes, compact feet, excellent bone, body,
topline & quarters, better front & movement than most, really turned it on in the challenge & was a comfortable winner,
using his neck to best advantage, well presented & handled, sound mover, quite young looking for his age,
think he will look even better in 6 months time;
2 Lee’s Stargus Devil Wind over Tebross, well up to size but well proportioned, has a lot to like about him,
lovely neckline, lean & fit with good ring presence;
3 Toulson’s Toulsyork Archduke.
OPEN DOG (5)
1 RCC, Jackson & Swash’s Jokyl Captain Scarlet, excellent type, splendid bone & substance, good head, keen & alert,
well carried ears, strong quarters, tail on top, firm body, sound enough.
Just preferred the more focused performance of his half brother when competing for the CC;
2 Collins & Curran’s Ch Collcurr Adventurer, 5 years, lacking a little face hair. Good length of head, clean silhouette standing, assertive showman, very well handled & presented, worthy champion,
moved OK but could have gone with a little more enthusiasm;
3 Gregg’s Ir Ch Bambusa Nobility, completed an excellent trio of good honest Airedales.
PUPPY BITCH (4)
1 Turner’s Crillee Cool China, litter sister to PD winner & his feminine counterpart, pretty bitch in good form, steady showgirl with a style of her own, well fitting jacket, attractive head, firm body & topline, moved reasonably well;
2 McCallum’s Ladsacres You’re A Witch, 9 months quality baby, full of character, good head, well boned, good legs & feet, moved well behind but all over the place in front;
3 Jones’ Mikeland Jumi.
JUNIOR BITCH (11,
1) Excellent class with good potential. 1 Baker’s Stargus Devil In Prada, 12 months, all quality, good length of head,
well carried ears, firm body & quarters, well presented coat, easy mover, well handled, stylish with good attitude;
2 Brown’s Dendaric Vigli, litter sister to 2 in JD, smart young bitch, quality head, lovely dark intelligent eyes,
good bone, fit body with good depth, sensible showgirl, went well;
3 Keay’s Magwyr Sweet Dreams with Jaymitch.
NOVICE BITCH (3)
1 Jackson & Swash’s Jokyl Star Flash, 12 months, litter sister to ND winner, lovely bitch standing, excellent coat texture, lovely head, keen expression, very good outline. Moved well behind but rather wayward coming towards me;
2 Brand’s Branded Party Time, was a bit coy about being handled but the ring was in the noisy & echoy annex & dogs can react in this way, ear carriage not settled, tail set could be better, movement needs to firm up all round;
3 Baxter’s Garland Feelin Groovy.
POST GRADUATE BITCH (9,1)
1 Oates’ Stabuks Button Moon, up to size for a bitch but has plenty of style, quality head, dark eyes giving keen expression, crisp coat. Took a bit of time to settle on the move but went OK once into her stride;
2 Brand’s Branded Jumping Bean, another who was a bit skittish when moving. Shapely bitch of good size & type,
lovely neckline, fit & well muscled. Not putting all in;
3 Johnstone’s Jecadie Boops Hot And Spicy.
LIMIT BITCH (9,4)
1 RCC, Lee’s Stargus Devil Queen, had a close tussle with
2 but in the end she went better in front & held her topline standing, size bigger than I prefer but she is well constructed,
has great terrier spirit & animation, lovely expression, firm & fit, lovely neck, good bone, sound mover;
2 Morris’ Nedella The Diamond, another big girl with much to admire, good length of head, keen expression,
on her toes with good ring presence, marvellous coat & condition, good bone,
clean neckline, used her hindquarters going round. Just not going as well in front as 1 but it was close;
3 Keay’s Jaymitch Skipping Sapphire.
OPEN BITCH (9,3)
1 CC, Hampton & Hall’s Jaideld Gypsy Viviana of Muliebrity, showy, focused & on her toes, easy mover, quality head,
dark eyes, keen expression, well set ears, firm fit body, good neckline & tailset, well coated & conditioned,
handled to advantage;
2 Lee’s Stargus Aurora, good coat & body, tight feet, well sprung ribs, good bone,
dark intelligent eyes but not using her ears to best advantage.
Moved & showed OK, standing a little slack in topline at times;
3 Barrett’s Jokyl Must Have Jazz.
