BORDER JUDGE WINDSOR 16

Border Terriers

My thanks to the committee of Windsor Ch show for their invitation to judge at this show which is so efficiently organised & well run. Thanks also to my stewards Elaine Waddingham & Lynn Crane for their help & assistance in keeping the ring running smoothly at all times. My appreciation also to the exhibitors for their entries.

As usual at Windsor the ring was large in/out with lots of space for dogs to move freely & a fairly flat surface enabling movement to be assessed, without being forced to stop/start when moving the whole class. In general the dogs were in good condition & I found no dogs that were not entire. Although teeth were generally good, apart from a few misaligned, they varied greatly from very small to huge in size. Disappointed to see a few light eyes creeping in.

Coats varied as always with many shown in soft undercoat but lacking topcoat, but worryingly I found several with a decent topcoat but very little undercoat. Movement particularly at the front end continues to be of concern, whilst a puppy can improve & tighten in front as it matures, moving wide or high stepping in an older exhibit is difficult to change.

Generally the standard of the bitches was better than that of the dogs.

VD (1)

1 South’s Borderella Day Tripper, 7 years grizzle/t with a strong head & dark eye who is nice for size & good in outline. Liked his topline on the move but moves better behind than in front. Coat coming through but a little upright in shoulder. In good condition.

MPD (2)

1 Reynolds’ Etterbern Sloane Ranger, just 6 months grizzle/t. Smaller type who carries a lovely head with short muzzle & ears carried close to his head. Excellent harsh coat with thick undercoat. Straightest of fronts, good in shoulder & rear angulation. Moved OK. I thought both exhibits in this class were a little short in rib;

2 Read’s Roxambor Space Invader, 6½ months bl/t. Rangier type, rather on the leg for one so young. Not the head qualities of the winner with ears rather large, but does have a super bite of large teeth, straight front & nice length of neck. Needs to tighten in front movement. Carrying a tight harsh coat.

PD (7,1a)

1 Channer’s Benattivo Gun Fire at Rubyfin, 10 months grizzle/t who moved the best in this class with drive & enthusiasm. Short muzzle of good width & neat v-shaped ears. Correct size for age with neat feet & a good underline. He was in full double coat with a loose pelt. Tail set a little low which reflects in his topline but good enough to win BPD;

2 Newman’s Cedarhill Shining Star at Nookshot, 11 months grizzle/t. A heavier type than the winner but another with a strong muzzle & good underjaw. Excellent length of neck flows into well placed shoulder. Tight coat & pelt, muscular rear end. Lost on front movement to the winner;

3 Yore’s Southash Deputy Sheriff at Smurfski, liked this one for his confident movement. Of good size he carries a harsh pliable coat. Lovely deep 2nd thigh. Rather plain in head not helped by lack of furnishings.

JD (6,1)

1 Irving’s Dandyhow Galloping Gourmet, lots to like about this 18 months grizzle/t who is well put together. An ideal size he is in good muscular condition with a keen expression & has a correct bite of large teeth. Carrying a full coat today with lots of undercoat. Good in profile, narrow front with well set on tail he moves on neat feet better at the rear than in front. Close up to the winners I am certain his day will come;

2 Anscombe’s Orangebox Dark Energy, 15 months bl/t with a strong head of good proportions & an alert expression, straight front & tight feet. Liked his length of rib & carries his tail well. Harsh topcoat. Moved OK. Would prefer more ticking to complete the picture;

3 Pickering’s Picer Fellemburg, different type, strongly made all through with ample bone. Good bite of huge teeth & little stop. Spannable with good angulation at rear & thick tail. In full coat with a thick pliable pelt he moved steadily.

YD (2)

Both dogs in this class of similar type being on the leg, longish in loin & with very little coat but I could span both.

1 Brewtser & Green’s Stowthorney Mr Tickle, preferred this dog for his stronger head & better movement. He has a strong, deep muzzle & good expression with ribs carried well back. He moves well at both ends. If you are showing with no coat please do not leave a ruff on the knuckles;

2 Read’s Roxambor Magical Timepiece, finer in head than the winner but has large teeth & good reach of neck. Nice level topline but a little loose in movement. His lack of coat showed off his fit condition.

PGD (7,1)

1 Brewster & Green’s Breckgreen Soldier Blue, well ticked bl/t whose coat is coming through harsh. Of good size he carries a bite of large teeth but his head could be stronger. Has sufficient bone & a good depth of rib. In muscular condition with a straight front & strong quarters he moves well both coming & going;

2 Newman’s Nookshot Nutcracker, quality headed dog of correct spannable size. He has a good bite in a short strong muzzle with nice eye, little stop & flat skull with small well placed ears. Good shoulder construction & front with well set tail. Let down by poor movement particularly in front;

3 Sharp’s Rhozzum Gwilym, good headed bl/t dog with strong jaw & bite of large teeth with small ears. Spans well, in full coat with a loose pelt. Moved OK but not enjoying his day out.

LD (16,2)

1 Docwra’s Bandicoot Doc Martin, leggier type but difficult to fault being spannable, balanced & well constructed throughout. Lovely head & strong muzzle with excellent bite. Straightest of fronts, neat feet & good lay of shoulder, narrow throughout. Super length of rib, strong loin & well placed tail. Moves confidently & true covering the ground well. Has a good pelt but wished he was carrying a little more coat today. Well handled to the RCC;

2 Clark’s Gameway McVitie, close up to the winner & lots to like. Correct size & just right for bone, spanning easily. Good strong jaw but a fraction heavy in ear. Well placed shoulder & excellent length & shape of rib. Strong well angulated muscular rear end. Lovely topline & nice carrot tail held correctly when moving well. Loose pelt but another needing a fraction more coat today;

3 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Cauis, carrying a good head & expression with well placed dark eye. Nice front & good length of body, well made throughout. In full harsh bl/t coat with ticking & undercoat. Good tail & well let down hocks Moved well both ends but lacked enthusiasm for the ring.

OD (4)

1 Jenkins’ Ch Badgerbeck Uncle Fester, what a super dog, out of the top drawer. Excellent for size & so well balanced when handled to span well. Everything as it should be & nothing exaggerated. Head so well proportioned, excellent skull shape with bite of large teeth. Straight, narrow front with the best of neat, tight well padded feet. Good neck flows into well laid back shoulder. Good in body & underline with best of tailsets & topline. His well muscled rear end is used to advantage when driving out well from behind with good front extension. His double coat is at its best with a thick pelt. Pleased to award him CC & BOB;

2 Fletcher’s Wadesleia Mr Herriot, one I have awarded BP previously but with a different handler today & the dog was very unsettled. Has the best of heads with a short muzzle, large teeth, no stop & with a wicked expression. Strong neck leads to straight front, he has good bone & perfectly set on thick tail. Strong loin but shorter in body length than some. Coat harsh but have seen it better. Moved well when settled but a real handful today;

3 Wrenn & Langdon’s Dandyhow Douglas Fir, 6 years bl/t, another dog I have judged before. Up to size but spannable. Good bite & typical expression. Straight front, strong loin & well placed tail. Harsh double coat & moves well both ways. Carrying enough weight & a little short in neck.

GCD (2)

1 B Day Tripper;

2 Stevens’ Cobstoneway Ocean Sunrise, an upstanding dog who carries a good example of a well ticked bl/t coat, that is harsh on a loose pelt. Large head with straight front, strong loin & well set tail, moving OK. Too deep in rib, oversize & just too much of him for me.

VB (4)

1 Baxter’s Am/Can/Int Ch Sulan Fancy That, lots of quality about this 8 year old who is well put together & won this class with ease. Lovely head proportions & strong muzzle. Looks good in profile & well angulated both ends. Strong neck flows into a level topline through to her short carrot tail. In crisp double coat, she moved soundly both ways & was considered for higher honours;

2 Day’s Gameway Cappuccino of Withershins, a real veteran well over 11 years, enjoying her day out. Smaller type with excellent shoulder placement. Lovely flat skull & dark eye, she maintains her topline when moving, ending in a small well set tail. She has a dense double coat & thick pelt used to cover her ample figure. Moved steadily;

3 Taylor’s Lutrabaeck Layla, 8 years in good condition but lacks the head qualities of 1 & 2. She has neat ears, clean shoulders, good underline & another short tail. With little coat today her front movement is rather wide & loose.

MPB (2)

1 Fulker’s Foxpaw Revelation, at just over 6 months I really liked this grizzle/t of a smaller type. She has a head of good shape with lovely bite, eye & little stop. Neat feet with a good front construction & rib shape, decent body length through to well developed hindquarters for one so young. Good double coat & correct tail. Impressed by the way she drives round the ring with lovely free movement enough for me to award her BPB & BP;

2 Read’s Roxambor Triple Step, litter sister to 2nd in MPD & the same comments as him apply. On the leg, her head needs to develop. She has a good neck & front with well set tail. Coat coming through but rather straight behind. Movement should tighten as she matures.

PB (8)

1 Jenkins’ Quite Fiery Lucifer by Badgerbeck, 10 months bl/t. A good sized pup with decent head, an OK bite with large teeth, lovely flat skull & little stop. Nicely shaped ears, good feet on straight legs, correctly shaped ribs, well set short carrot tail. Has a firm muscular rear end & is in good condition. Harsh double coat & moved well to & fro;

2 Mooney’s Chesterton Caboodle, her first birthday today, this grizzle/t has a super front end. Feminine head with good bite, large teeth & well shaped flat skull. Best of necks into a straight narrow front on tight feet. Shoulders so well laid back with nice flat rib. Rather long in loin, her tail is rather low set & wispy. Carrying a good coat she moves well;

3 Vincent’s Bromsden Skyfall, 11 months grizzle/t. A decent well proportioned pup with lovely head & keen expression. Nice clean neck & shoulders with a good front. Nice body shape but again not the rear end to match where I would prefer more angulation & a better topline. Good harsh coat & she moves steadily.

JB (11,3)

1 Brannan & Kelly’s Brankell Double Or Quits, very attractive & appealing youngster who will win at a high level. Nicely put together in all areas. A good size with quality head & expression. Nice neck, front & good layback of shoulder. Strongly made rear assembly with good bend of stifle, used to stride out well. Carries a tight coat with thick pelt. Well trained;

2 May & Whisker’s Thistlestone Rhyme N Reason, slightly larger than the winner but she spans OK. Good bite of large teeth, with well placed neat ears. Straight front with neat feet & sufficient bone. Good in shoulder & for length of ribs, she has a level topline on the move with a short well set tail. In good condition & uses her strong hindquarters to move well. Not quite the coat & pelt quality of the winner today;

3 Pickering’s Picer Flora McIvor, this one appears heavier than she actually is. She has a decent head with a correct bite of large teeth in a strong jaw. A little heavy in ear she has a strong neck & correct shoulder on a straight front. Flat ribbed she is in firm condition & moves steadily. Has a thick tail, coat & pelt.

YB (10)

Several really good coats in this strong class.

1 Moore’s Bardenfox Pussy Galore, what a good looking grizzle/t this is, a lovely size & well balanced throughout who looks good in outline. A super head with keen expression, nice short strong muzzle with large teeth in a strong jaw. Well placed ears, with a neat front construction carried on tight small feet. Narrow body throughout, she spans well, her body length is good with a tail straight off the backend. Strong rear end with well defined muscle & good in stifle, used to move well with drive & purpose. Her double coat is at its best being thick & harsh carried on a loose pelt. RCC;

2 Boorder’s Mulberry Blossom, grizzle/t by my DCC I note & has many of his best qualities. A good size she has a lovely head with good bite. Nice front & another with neat, tight feet. Just right for bone with lovely flat ribs & strong loin. In fit condition with good bend of stifle, carrying a harsh double coat & good pelt. Tailset is fine but lost out on movement to the winner, moving well at the rear but not as positive in front;

3 Ritchie’s Ianteg Red Rubi, strong headed bitch with dark eye, bite of large teeth, strong jaw & flat skull but a little heavy in the ear. OK in neck with a good front & body, with ribs carried well back. Strong hindquarters, with hocks well let down & a nicely placed tail moving well. Has a thick coat but not quite the texture of the winner today.

PGB (14,1)

1 Ramus’ Argentail Titania by Onthill, an attractive red who looks good from all corners. A decent size with typical head & expression. A strong bite of large teeth & good width of skull. Narrow front with well padded feet. Nice in body & strong rear end with deep muscular thighs. Neat underline & good tailset carrying a double coat that is harsh & thick. Strode out well when moving soundly;

2 Sansom’s Tarkaswell Doctors Orders, well known red who I gave 1st in MPB on her debut the last time I judged. She does not disappoint with maturity. Neat head with well placed ears, dark eye & good bite. Narrow front with well placed shoulders, sufficient bone & neat feet. Good length of body but just thought her tailset was a fraction low with more than sufficient rear angulation. In correct coat, she was handled well & moved steadily;

3 Aldis’ Torryburn Cadenza, of a smaller type, this is a well proportioned bitch who has a very feminine & typical head, well shaped with a short muzzle & nicely placed ears. Lovely front with strong loin & good rear angulation. In good coat she moves well both coming & going using a good tail to maintain her level topline on the move. Not as enthusiastic as some.

LB (15,5)

1 Roberts’ Smalesmouth Skylark, this bitch has improved since I last judged her. Of a rangier type she is narrow all through. Her head has a scissor bite of large teeth in a strong jaw with a nice dark eye. With a straight front she is well balanced when viewed from the side, with good reach of neck flowing into shoulders that are well placed. Lovely flat ribs, decent length of loin through to well defined muscular thighs & well set tail. Carrying a thick coat & pelt she moves true with a long easy stride that could follow a horse all day. Considered for higher honours;

2 Hyslop’s Baywillow Brown Braid, a mature bitch who is of a smaller more compact type. She has a pleasing head & expression with a short strong muzzle, flat skull & small neat ears. A strong muscular neck leads to a straight front with legs that need a fraction more length. Well made in body she has the best of short thick well set tails. Carrying a good jacket & loose pelt, she moves well at both ends with a good steady action;

3 Mooney’s Brumberhill Bollinger for Chesterton, another finer type who is up to size but narrow. With large teeth & strong bite but muzzle could be a little shorter. She has a nicely constructed body with a straight front, good in shoulder & correctly shaped ribs carried well back. Sound rear end with good bend of stifle. Coat is harsh & thick but about to go over. Moved well but lacked a little confidence.

OB (9,2)

1 Guvercin’s Ch Glebeheath Tea N’ Tiffers, what a cracking light grizzle/t bitch this is. Of an excellent size she is very well balanced & beautifully constructed both in forequarters & hindquarters. Easily spanned & handled so well. Her head is well proportioned with a super bite in a short strong muzzle with nicely set ears. Viewed from the front she is straight & narrow carrying the best of neat feet. With a good body length & shape she is in fit condition but not over muscled. Lovely rear angulation shows off her perfectly placed carrot tail. In good textured double coat with pliable pelt she moves with style using an economical stride. Her handler certainly gets the best from her. A difficult decision for BOB. CC;

2 Sansom’s Ch Tarkaswell Double Agent, a high quality bitch who is difficult to fault. She is of a good type & size & so well schooled. A good feminine head with pleasing expression. Her mouth has a strong bite of large teeth, good eye & well placed ears. Her underline is good with her straight, narrow front carrying just the right amount of bone. The tail is correctly set & she moves out well with confidence both coming & going. In good harsh coat & pelt she was close up but just preferred the topline & angles of the winner;

3 Phillips’ Ch Nantcoch Ffion, a bitch who I have given a RCC previously & still in good order with a head of good proportions, strong jaw & a bite of large teeth, she exhibits a good expression. Her front is narrow & straight finished off with neat feet. With good front angles, her topline is good on the move complemented by a well placed tail carried well. She moves well both ways & has a tight coat but would have preferred the coat a little further through today.

GCB (6,1)

1 Stevens’ Cobstoneway Bayou Sunrise, a rising 7 years grizzle/t who is up to size but just spannable. Good head & expression with well placed ears, straight front but deep enough in rib. She was in good condition with a thick double coat on a loose pelt & moved OK;

2 Aldous’ Twigglestone Elfenor, 3 years of a good size but cobbier type. She has a typical head with a short strong muzzle, good bite & little stop. Good front construction with a firm topline & short carrot tail. In full double coat, she moved OK but not the muscle condition of the winner;

3 Freeman’s Borderells Snap Dragon, almost 4 years this grizzle/t has lots to like with a decent head & short muzzle. She has a good length of neck into correct shoulders with well set tail. In tight coat, she moved OK but not with the topline of some & was a little weighty today.
