BORDER WELKS 10 Judge(s) MISS S A LESLIE DCC CH ROSSULA MAGIC BORDERER CLIPSTONE (E & J JACKSON) Border Terriers I started the day with veteran dog followed by some excellent juvenile dog classes which were very enticing. Size was sometimes a little difficult to come to terms, with exhibits at the top of the scale more shapely & sound, as long as they were spannable they still featured if they had the attributes breed & conformation-wise to do the job they were bred for. Generally I determined that there was no need for a diatribe from yours truly as I found my lovely entry on the whole brought forward much of what I was looking for & I thank exhibitors for that. Just remember while I love a proper double coat I still like a tidy coat! Heads were definitely improved with very few of the stoppy, round eyed exhibits I do not find typical. There were a few strangely grubby ones & some would have benefited from some tlc round their eyes to guard against stray hairs causing irritation. Be that as it may, there were some smashing classes with dogs not making the cut that on another day would figure in the reckoning. VD (2) 1 Jackson’s Ch Rossula Magic Borderer Clipstone, set the yard stick for the exhibits to follow, clearly a dog of immense quality, although I had not imagined handing out a duplicate CC it is testament to the longevity of this breed, this male in particular. I will not repeat what I have said before but suffice to say a remarkable 9 year old he continued to fill the eye, exhibited no degeneration but indeed was fit & supple, moved with ground covering ease, my line-up pleased me greatly. CC, BOB & G4; 2 Langdon & Wrenn’s Dandyhow Sir Toby, good narrow dog of correct size, lovely eye, good head pattern. Not quite as enthusiastic as 1 but fully entitled to take more time about things at 13. MPD (9) Potentially a class of nice puppies. 1 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Bronco, really agile dog who felt fit & supple, satisfactory front for his age with superb well padded feet. Perhaps a little plain in ear but good skull with strong underjaw. Presents good underline, moved easily; 2 Tanner’s Rhozzum Viceroy, close up decision, one to watch, puppy with a smashing outline & uses himself well, made correctly throughout. Just softer & more puppyish than 1; 3 Spencer’s Cobstoneway River Magic. PD (6) 1 McPherson’s Brumberhill Benchmarked, undoubtedly a star in the making, what you see is what you get, of correct size & readily spannable, smart & balanced he handles well from nose to his tail, good head, well moulded skull & correct foreface, lovely expression, super legs & feet, good angulation throughout, free from any exaggeration, well ribbed back, good strong loin for his age & knows how to move, in perfect coat with thick pelt. Not overly mature for his age. BP; 2 B Bronco; 3 Sneddon’s Justinca Ryan by Kersfell. JD (13,2a) Nice class with a number of good contenders. 1 Ramus’ Onthill Fernando, racy individual with much to like, appeals for size & has the desired narrowness, good height to length ratios, OK in front, should continue to develop in head, well set onto correct neck, excellent dense & harsh jacket over good skin which ought to do the trick in Border country; 2 Harrison’s Iacheslei Cantus, not in his best bib & tucker but another pleasing exhibit for make & shape, many similar remarks applying, liked his expression with good eye & head generally; 3 Martin’s Bortino High Society. YD (10,3) 1 Larner’s Hawcoat Blue Bertie, headed a lovely pair of high class individuals, both could stand narrower in front at times but both are spannable & of good type & size. Such a shapely & well made exhibit, preferred his length of bones, well proportioned & resplendent in a superb top & under coat which together with a good pelt demonstrated all that the Standard requires, super reach of neck & lay of shoulder which flows into an excellent backline, correct loin, good rear assembly, moved with real drive from behind; 2 Lowry’s Ravenside Ballymoss, lost out slightly in legs & feet to 1. Typical exhibit, very appealing in head with lovely expression, built on nice lines with good angulation, sound, free mover; 3 Ramus’ Onthill Super Trouper. GD (5,3) 1 Mcpherson’s Brumberhill Blue Tempest, high class exhibit who gave me goose bumps as I inspected him at close quarters, masculine but nothing overdone, very pleasing well shaped & set eye to give a typical expression, superb otter head, correct skull & muzzle, fill under the eye, strong underjaw, it all falls into your hand just right, stands balanced & parallel on all four well padded feet with correct bone, good neckline, shoulder & upper arm, correct in forechest, like his half brother has the true underline, has the racy, strong quarters & conformation required to move as he should. Still a youngster & can possibly tighten just a tad more. RCC; 2 Channer’s Mingrovia Flintstone Chief at Rubyfin, has a smashing coat & pelt which was well prepared naturally. Would prefer him to be ribbed back further to improve his underline but still has lots to like. PGD (16,2) 1 Anscombe’s Tufterslodge Walnut at Orangebox, really nice sort to go over, everything in it’s place. Just wanted him to be a tad less neat & have a little more scope. Nevertheless could get anywhere & strong enough to do what he had to when he did, fits the bill head & expression wise, correct bone & stands his ground well, sound as a bell & moves with real economy; 2 Nicholls’ Halcus Annatto, close decision between 2 & 3. Sadly 3 was in his underwear but had the make & shape to undoubtedly be in the mix. 2 is a masculine, racy individual with good height to length ratios, attractive in head. Could be less pronounced in stop; 3 Matthews’ Rhozzum King Pin. LD (16,1) Yet another class that gave me so much pleasure to run the rule over. 1 Harrison’s Iacheslei Torus, a previous favourite & the remarks made then still apply, having fought so hard for the class I thought he would be my eventual winner but in the challenge he just gave it all away, I am sure he will have his day; 2 Williams & Johnson’s Quarryway Dill, has continued to develop since I judged him as a juvenile, handles well with the attributes one wants, good size, spannable & feels balanced, lovely forehand & outlook, fit, good moving; 3 Guvercin’s Glebeheath Stan The Man. OD (7,2a) 1 Judge’s Mansergh Float to Plushcourt, headed a nice trio, typical, honest Border, slightly plain but good head, presents a lovely outline with excellent front assembly, readily spanned, workmanlike build, strong loin & correct behind; 2 Thomas’ Ch Byrons Greengrass, need to handle this one to appreciate him & certainly benefits from his excellent harsh double coat, toned & masculine without being overdone, good tail, goes as he should; 3 Sneddon’s Kersfell Comet. VB (6,2) 1 Stockley’s Ch Manx Margaid, the females of the species were showing their years just a little. It was pleasing to review this nice specimen who gained her second CC from me & was subsequently crowned, pleased to report that there was nothing to suggest she was not worthy of her place in the upper house; 2 Harris’ Penlumeg Paloma, nicely put together b/t of good size & easily spanned. Wish her ribs were carried further back; 3 Larner’s Morgandare Tohyah at Hawcoat. MPB (17,2) 1 Jackson’s Cobstoneway Moon River at Clipstone, rather deceiving, she might be biggish but comes to hand well, spannable with good bone, & while still puppyish had good body shape, was sound, satisfactory head pattern, appealed with her typical, keen expression, good dense coat; 2 Southam’s Southash Seabreeze, also of good construction, while not in her best bib & tucker was pleasing in angulation throughout, was a useful sort who ought to finish well; 3 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Ballerina. PB (12,3) 1 Roberts’ Smalesmouth Maylady, thought both 1 & 2 had good skulls with heads set on well. Would prefer a shade less of 1 but scored in legs, feet & forehand, preferred her shoulder & upper arm to 2, good length of bone, moved out well; 2 Reeves’ Baywillow Rhapsody In Blue, showy individual especially when on a loose lead, well proportioned & firm in body with lots to like, assured & easy to forget she was still a puppy. Not overly mature for her age, feet could be tighter; 3 Stevens’ Cobstoneway Bayou Sunrise. JB (12,5) Lovely class of sound quality bitches, all of obvious merit & with much to offer for the future. 1 Martin’s Bortino Smiling Queen, it was a treat to find this beautifully constructed honest bitch who appealed from every angle, I fell for her lovely otter head & every time I caught sight of her free standing she filled the eye, she is just made right & therefore needs little interference, moved freely & accurately, gorgeous legs & feet, in perfect harsh, dense jacket. Just had to bow to the greater experience of the dog who was fresher in the challenge. CC; 2 Anscombe’s Orangebox Stargazer, coat on the way out but a very nicely made youngster who was not disgraced in this strong class, shapely body, good in loin & well let down behind but without exaggeration, good moving individual; 3 Lee’s Bromscars Wasted Time by Tythrop. YB (13,4) There were some lovely typical heads in this class. 1 Larner’s Hawcoat Sweet Fairy, quality specimen who exhibits a lovely head pattern & can’t really stand wrong, rates highly in most departments, looks classic. Unfortunately her coat was past it’s sell by date & therefore looks heavier both in bone & body than she is on closer inspection. Has the conformation required & it shows to advantage when she moves to cover the ground well; 2 Waller’s Worker’s Playtime, feminine bitch, really appealed with her good head & lovely expression, narrow & spannable, in good fettle. Wish she was fractionally longer in body & rib; 3 Thomas’ Benattivo Gem Stone for Daluce. GB (5) 1 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Singsong, typical & good to go over, built on highly desirable lines, lithe, active sort who has the pliable springy body where everything is connected with strength, but without tension or bulk. Moves effectively, reaching & driving but with no wasted effort. Not yet fully in coat but there was evidence of correct texture; 2 Worker’s Playtime; 3 Parr’s Head Over Heels at Westpoint. PGB (16,7) 1 Shaw’s Early Valentine, very taking exhibit, nicely proportioned & very feminine without losing the necessary power where required, dressed to impress with excellent coat & pelt, good underline, correct angulation, very pleasing head pattern & expression; 2 Sneddon’s Kersfell Miss Jean Brodie, athletic type, built on good lines, head is shapely & well moulded. Ears a tad plain which detracts from her expression. Proof of a good dense jacket, typical & comes to hand well. Would prefer slightly less length in her racy quarters; 3 Phillips’ Aurgwen Alyth. LB (16,4) There were others in this class who would easily have made the cards on another day. 1 Dean’s Yeomeadow Heather for Tyrian, this is a frustratingly nice exhibit. Frustrating because she simply does not care if she makes the best of herself & in the challenge, made me think of the song ‘how do you catch a cloud & pin it down’. She is just right for size, narrow & spannable, beautiful legs, feet & forehand generally, good skull & muzzle, keen expression, nothing overdone, she comes together well & is a true bl/t in tip top order; 2 Gillam’s Orenberg Obsession, well aware of her worth, this one is the opposite & puts all in, stands with authority & energy, made well all through with very shapely body, very typical head & expression, head well set on, good neck & shoulders. Perhaps just a shade bigger than I ideally like; 3 Garcia-Sierra’s Ottaswell Obsession. OB (8,2) 1 Fraser & Butler’s Blue Tutu via Ycart, really liked this one, worthy of a place in the upper house I am sure she will gain entrance soon. Very unlucky to meet such a lovely opponent in the junior bitch. Appeals on so many levels, good ottery head, lovely shaped eye, good outline & height to length ratios, well made front & rear assemblies, strong in loin, moves out well with real efficiency, in a hot line-up. RCC; 2 Jordan’s Rubicon Reward, sound, straightforward, sensibly made exhibit, who I have liked before & still do; 3 Judge & Thompson’s Plushcourt The Bees Knees in Thoraldby.
