The Joint BT Clubs Championship Show (hosted by The Midland BTC)
Sunday 3rd May 2015
Judge: Julie Price (Oxcroft)
I would like to thank the Midland Border Terrier Club committee for the opportunity to judge this year’s Joint club show. Many thanks to my two ring stewards Bob and Liz Wright for the smooth running of the ring and the cups of coffee. It was an experience to go over so many dogs of different types; this made my job difficult at times, as each one had different attributes to the next.
A few classes I found very hard to decide who my winners would be for this reason. Is the breed getting better or worse? I do not think I am the first to mention that there are too many foreign heads and plain faces with no expression. The breed standard states “a head like that of an otter” and “essentially a working terrier”. Confirmation and movement, I think has improved a little, but the heads and strength of the dogs has declined. When I looked at some of the dogs, I liked them but then had to remind myself that they were dogs not bitches.
Thank you to all exhibitors for letting me go over your dogs and the gracious way most of you accepted my decisions.
Winners
Minor Puppy Dog
1st Stowthorney Mr Tickle (Brewster & J Green)
An eight month old, red grizzle dog, up to size with a narrow front and good lay of shoulders. A good length of rib and a level top line. A good bend of stifle and showed well.
2nd Markington Apollo ( Houseman)
A seven month old Grizzle dog of correct size, with a nice length of body. Pleasing otter head and straight front just lost his top line on the move as it sloped down to his shoulders.
3rd Navy Seal By Tyrian ( Dean)
A seven month old blue and tan puppy with a good length of neck and top line leading to a nice tail set. Good bend of stifle with small tight feet. Shown in good condition. Just a little long in the muzzle, but with a correct scissor bite.
Puppy Dog
1st Ravenside Raise Your Glass (Lowry)
A ten month old puppy, up to size, and needs to be no heavier. Good width of skull, but the length of his muzzle needs to be shorter in proportion. Lovely length of neck, flat ribs and good length of back. Good bend of stifle and nice small feet.
2nd Markington Apollo ( Houseman)
3rd Alcumlow Parsley ( Barber)
Well made with moderate bone, a good bite, narrow front and nice laid back shoulders, loose, thick pelt, movement a little erratic. Good body lines and confirmation, his head and bottom jaw need more substance to balance the picture.
Junior Dog
1st Flutorum Artful Dodger ( Castel)
Red grizzle dog, with a strong head, keen expression and a good bite. Nice small ears, good thick pelt, shoulders and front movement better than 2nd. Nice length of rib and not to deep in his chest, level top line and good bend of stifle, a lot to like about him.
2nd Stineval Napoleon JW ( Horner)
Another red grizzle shown in great condition although shorter in the back and I just preferred the length of rib of 1st. Nice small feet, good bend of stifle, moved with drive although movement a little lose in front. Showed as well as ever.
3rd Tythrop Trademarqued ( Lee)
Litter brother to Bitch CC winner, He has a good length of neck and nice laid back shoulders, just a bit down on his pasterns.
Yearling Dog
1st Karison Keiser ( Johnson)
Super harsh coat, I liked his size, length of rib, outline and short carrot tail. You need to get your hands on him to feel what is under his super jacket and pelt. Easily spanned, with a narrow straight front.
2nd Manorborders Maverick By Tyrian ( Dean)
Racy dog with lovely body lines of good proportions. Covered the ground well on the move.
3rd Plushcourt The Boss Bee At Manorcroft ( Broomhead & Bean)
Well muscled young dog, head ok, but needs more strength in his bottom jaw , good top line, but deeper in his brisket than first two. Good bend of stifle, show well for his handler.
Novice Dog
1st Stowthorney Mr Tickle ( Brewster & Green)
2nd Tythrop Trademarqued ( Lee)
3rd Kersfell Cool River ( Sneddon)
Graduate Dog
1st Otterwood Caius JW ShCM ( Hollingsbee)
A grizzle dog with masculine head and expression, well laid shoulder, good bone and feet, level top line and good tail set.
Post Graduate Dog
1st Redfox Watchman ( Marr)
Lovely otter head, straight arrow front, easily spanable, shown in his underclothes but this only enhanced his racy body. Handler needed to move faster to keep up!
2nd Dymanti Roman Warrior at Nottorg ShCM ( Taylor)
Good red grizzle coat and pelt, good length of back, good front and back angulation.
3rd Earthdog Lanyard By Beaconpike JW ( Golding)
A rich red in colour, different type to first, racy, but head not like the first two. Straight narrow front ,with small feet.
Mid Limit Dog
1st Tythrop Timepiece ( Lee)
Blue & Tan dog with lovely double jacket. Narrow throughout with lovely length of neck flowing in to good shoulders. Up on his toes when stood, covered the ground well with his racy hindquarters. Head needs to be a little stronger to balance the picture.
2nd Stowthorney Swinging Sam ( Brewster & Green)
Deeper in his brisket, and wider in front than 1st. Head quite strong, with pleasing expression.
3rd Howthwaite Grainsgill ( Barrett)
Nice sized dog, not over exaggerated in any way, just his movement let him down today. Stronger bottom jaw
Limit Dog
1st Ravenside Rumours About Caldewgate ( Burke)
Good otter head and kind eye, this dog had character about him and this shone through. He enjoyed himself and was engaging throughout. Deeper in his chest than 2nd but moved well and this is what won him the Res DCC. Straight front, good laid back shoulders, easily spanned and good angulation of hindquarters.
2nd Benattivo Betfred ( Girling)
Smaller than 1st, this dark red dog in beautiful coat and condition with excellent pelt. Not quite as masculine as 1st but balanced. His head was of a different type to the two either side. He has a narrow front, good bone and tight feet. Strong loin and well muscled rear, better rear movement than front.
3rd Tojamatt Warlord (Matthews)
A stronger dog than the other two, with a slightly wider front and when he pulled on the move this was exaggerated. Good strong otter head and presented in a lovely thick double coat and stood well. Not a lot to choose between them
Open Dog
1st Ottaswell Palamedes (Hunt)
A lovely otter head, with small ears and good movement and covered the ground well, small tight feet. Plenty of muscle just needed a little more flesh on his loins to balance him up.
2nd Ch Rus/Slo/Rom Ch Stella Rover Akko ( Privezentseva)
Head not as good as 1st, longer in the muzzle and bottom jaw not as powerful. Good length of neck into good shoulders f neck just seemed a little short in the leg for the length of his body.
3rd Chorbeck Charlie Chaplin JW ShCM ( Haughton)
A heavier looking dog but not when you get your hands on him not a lot to choose between them. Pleasing head, not as racy either but moved well.
Veteran Dog
1st Ch Stineval Acerola With Tyrian JW ( Dean)
This nine year dog looks well for his age balanced and not over done in any way and moved well too. Narrow straight front still with good confirmation
2nd Ruelata Acrobat At Redfox (Marr)
This nine year old, smaller dog than 1st. Shown without much coat today, so you could see his how well he has aged. Nice otter head with a keen expression, good length of neck, and still racy throughout.
3rd Ch Cedarhill Authorized JW ShCM ( Dean)
This seven year old is a much heavier and stronger dog than the other two; nice level topline and a good bend of stifle, just a little deeper in the brisket.
Special Open Working Dog or Bitch
1st Ch Badgerbeck Uncle Fester ( Jenkins)
My first impression of this dog was he is obviously not afraid of the dark and capable of doing a day’s work. Under his good thick jacket is a narrow dog with good lay of shoulders and he is not overdone in any way. Easily spanned, flat ribs of a good length, correct size and weight. He has a good head with a keen expression. A balanced dog, shown in a fit condition. Moved well. Showed himself off better, in the challenge than in his class. DCC & BIS.
Minor Puppy Bitch
1st Howthwaite Gold Dust ( Barrett)
Lovely blue and tan bitch, good front and nice length of neck, with a feminine head, balanced, easily span able and just the right amount of bone. Little tight feet and the best mover in this class and showed well.
2nd Ianteg Red Rubi (Richie)
Not much between 2nd and 3rd. Their heads were similar and were their body lines. 2nd just had a bit more bend of stifle.
3rd Stowthorney Miss Chief By Northborders (North)
Nice sized little bitch which could easily have swap places with 2nd.
Puppy Bitch
1st Lynsett Bold Spirit ( McFarlane)
Pretty bitch with lovely feminine expression, correct teeth and ear placement, good length of neck, well laid back shoulders. Narrow body with a good length of rib. Correct tail set good rear quarter’s, coat not at its best, but that will change. Moved with drive around the ring holding her top line whilst on the move. Best Puppy in Breed.
2nd Cynetkoy Bizzie Bee (Watson & Kenna)
Better coat than 1st but rear movement not as positive. Again, nice head and feminine too, but heavier boned puppy altogether.
3rd Arjaybe Blue Mist at Hollinholme ( Robinson)
Not the head of 1 and 2
Junior Bitch
1st Tythrop Touchstone
Well, what a lovely surprise to find this early on in the bitches. A balanced bitch with enough head to complement her body size. Pretty and feminine otter head and she fitted the standard to a tea. Moved better once she had settled down, very happy to award her BCC & RBIS.
2nd Tojamatt Integrity ( Matthews)
A good otter head, up to size for me, with good bone, neat feet, and good length of rib, strong loin, level top line and correct tail set. Moved well. Coat just coming through.

2nd Brumberhill Miss Daisy (Ellis)
Slightly wider in front and deeper in her brisket than 1st and head not as strong as it could be.
3rd Brumborder Pas De Deux ( McCall & Britton)
Different type to 1st and 2nd and she lost her top line on the move, covered the ground well and moved with drive.
Post Graduate Bitch
1st Chorbeck Snow Angel ( Haughton)
A small bitch, with a thick coat and pelt, which made her look heavier than she was. Good angulation all round, moved OK
2nd Kirkbyvalley Dancing Mist ( Jackson & Dugdale)
A lovely bitch which would have been a strong contender for BCC, as she is very much like the winner, balanced and feminine with good otter head and lovely straight front and liked her very much. Unfortunately dentition let her down.
3rd Tombac Tara at Vallemoss ( Moss)
Blue and Tan bitch, shown very well by her young handler. Nice straight front but looked to have a little too much sternum, good flat ribs and length of body with nice strong hindquarters.
Mid Limit Bitch
1st Tythrop Turn Back Time ( Lee)
A pretty blue and tan bitch with a straight and narrow front. Level top line and well angulated hindquarters. A nice carrot shaped tail to finish the picture.
2nd Tarkaswell Double Agent JW ( Samsom)
A red grizzle bitch, with a lovely body and racy too. Balanced, but her head was not the quality of the 1st. shown in excellent condition.
3rd Mattedonn Farthing for Tyrian ( Dean)
A femine bitch with a good length of neck, but slightly deeper in the chest than other two
Limit Bitch
1st - Tojamatt Morgana (Matthews)
I quite liked this bitch. Good head but she pulled on the move and this spoilt her movement at times. When stood, her front was OK. Correct size and balanced throughout, level top line and coat in good condition.

A well presented grizzle bitch with lovely expression, but not the head of 1st. Good length of neck and correct shoulder placement, neat feet, good in rib, narrow throughout with correct bend of stifle

3rd Cedarhill Wish Upon a Star JW ( Dean)
A grizzle bitch of nice size with good head and expression, Good top line and tail set. Excellent jacket and pelt. Well angulated quarters and moved with drive
Veteran Bitch
1st Vallemoss Matilda May at Wadesleia ( Fletcher)
A favourite of mine. Blue and Tan, with a good otter head and expression. A quality bitch still looking good for her age. Correct size and balanced outline, moved well.

A taller bitch with a good otter head and expression, correct bite, ears in proportion to her head. Good front, nice reach of neck and shoulders, easily span able. Shown in tip top order.
3rd Breckgreen Blue Christmas ( Green)
A smart blue and tan bitch, just her front was wider than 1st and 2nd and her head not has feminine.
