BORDER JUDGE RICHMOND 11

Border Terriers

I was incredibly honoured to be invited to award my first CCs at Richmond. I have always hated it when judges say ‘oh I wish I had had more top awards’ but I can honestly say that I truly now understand where they were coming from. I had some incredibly difficult classes with a lot of quality. This scenario continued when it came to choosing who the CCs & RCCs should go to. There are, however, two distinct ‘types’ of Borders developing & often classes contained a mixture of both types. The chiselled heads with high placed ears are not typical & we need to try to breed away from this as we are in danger of losing the otter head. I found no bad mouths, just a few where teeth ‘placement’ was peculiar & some dirty teeth. Presentation on the whole has improved, although please leave the scissoring to other terriers

VD (2)

1 Axford’s Barterhound Rhinestone, this 8½ years grizzle dog has an excellent, harsh, tight double coat. He is in fit condition. A nice straight front, leading to good shoulders, well laid back ribs, strong loin & level topline. Sound movement, easy to span, neat tight feet & good mouth;

2 Small’s Tulawyn Oberon at Tilmoray, nice dog with attractive head & expression, a little heavier all round than 1 & not as sound on the move.

MPD (5)

1 Hopper’s Esyntona Rip van Winkle, a very nice bl/t who out-moved the rest of the class with his excellent drive & effortless ‘float’. Very good harsh, tight double coat & thick loose pelt, lovely length of back & good topline. Good tailset, very nice head & expression with correct ear placement, good shoulder placement, very well presented;

2 Tuffin’s Othamcourt Woodchat at Oatberry, a very smart youngster in an excellent coat, very nice head & expression. These two gave me a very hard task to choose between them, on another day could easily change place & both show a lot of promise;

3 Johnson’s Kosmic Sun over Karison.

PD (5)

1 Fryer’s Irton Morse Code, gorgeous red in the most stunning of coats, he oozes quality & has the most gorgeous head with typical expression & correct proportions. An extremely free mover who is so sound, this excellent movement in youngsters is so good to see. Excellent bone with good shoulders, lovely length of rib & strong loin, he is fit & could easily do his job. Gorgeous carrot tail & topline which he carried perfectly on the move, seriously considered him for top honours & I’m sure he will have a great future. BP;

2 Green’s Breckgreen Royal Mint, a nice youngster who was unfortunate to meet 1. Not as strong in head as him but a good head all the same. A lovely harsh close double coat & thick loose pelt, moved extremely well;

3 Dickinson’s Ragatam Newmarket at Badgerholme.

JD (9)

This was a very difficult class to judge as there was a lot of quality & not enough places.

1 Wilson’s Olderhill Afrunado, a very nice light grizzle/t who headed this very good class. He has an excellent head & lovely expression, wonderful tight cat feet, lovely length of back with well laid ribs & strong loin. Good straight front, lovely topline leading to a correctly placed & carried tail, nice amount of bone throughout. Very balanced, moved extremely well, lovely temperament;

2 Wrenn & Langdon’s Dandyhow Douglas Fir, very nice bl/t, he was a fidgety on the table but when standing I could really see his qualities. Gorgeous head with typical expression, very nice reach of neck, lovely topline & tail. Good harsh double coat, impressed by this boy who could easily swap places with 1 another day;

3 Dean’s Cedarhill Beyond The Stars.

YD (6)

1 Wallace’s Hobhill Helmsman, lovely young dog with the typical head & expression I would expect from this kennel. Good on the move, nice length of back, good straight front, coat in good condition, nice loose pelt;

2 Dean’s Cedarhill Beyond The Stars, different type to 1 but has his qualities too. Lovely harsh right double coat, nice head & expression, moved well;

3 Bate’s Sweeping Foxtrot for Kgills.

PGD (8)

1 Squibbs & Barker’s Cobstoneway Lazy River, very nice dog with a gorgeous strong head with typical expression. His body is very well proportioned with lovely well laid ribs & strong loin. He moved very well & had one of the best toplines of the day, his coat has more to come but what was there was of excellent quality. Lovely loose pelt. RCC;

2 Holmes’ Bingobongo Wicket Widget at Bimandi, one of the fittest dogs of the day, he has muscles on muscles. Incredibly fit but used his power to move with drive around the ring, one whose coat is coming through but what was evident was good. Excellent loose pelt, a close decision;

3 Flowers & Buckle’s Bingobongo Hollywood Blues.

LD (12)

A difficult class with a lot of quality throughout. The top five placings could swap easily.

1 Hunt’s Ethlencoral Pip of Ottaswell, this dog presented a lovely picture & his overall balance just pipped it. Very nice light grizzle dog with a good head & expression, his bodylines are excellent with lovely level topline. Great length of neck flowing into good shoulders, correct ribs & strong loin, moved extremely well with good drive. He pushed incredibly hard for top honours, too;

2 Dean’s Digmoor Captain Rook by Tyrian, very similar to 1, lovely length of back & excellent loin, very nice head & expression & lovely tail which he carried well;

3 Docwra’s Bandicoot Double O’ Seven.

OD (7)

1 Culley’s Earthwise Deuteronomy, I was thrilled to be able to finally get my hands on this dog & boy, did he not disappoint. He is in incredibly hard, fit condition & is a credit to his owners & his breeder, excellent head with a gorgeous kind but typical expression. Lovely strong, clean white teeth, excellent neck flowing into correct shoulders, correctly well placed ribs & the strongest of loins. Lovely topline which he kept on the move, absolutely stunning movement which is a pleasure to watch – striding out in front & using his power to drive from behind. He is a wonderful example of the breed who should have gained his title long ago. CC, his third;

2 Dean’s Ch Cedarhill Authorized, a very worthy ch who I have judged & admired before. Lovely harsh coat & presented in tip-top condition, lovely head & expression, great topline & lovely movement;

3 Johnson & Williams’ Ch Quarryway Dill.

VB (3)

1 Stevens’ Springhill Pacify of Cobstoneway, a beautiful bitch who thoroughly enjoyed her day & so she should. She has the harshest of coats & is in fabulous condition, very pretty head & expression. Lovely bodylines, very nice tail, moved very well. BV;

2 Maskell’s Sextonmagic Bluebelle, a bl/t I have judged before, a little heavier all round than 1 but still very nice. Excellent coat, nicely made;

3 Prevost & Hopkins’ Mulysa Miss Muffet.

MPB (2)

1 Hopper’s Esyntona Ripling Ruby, a very nicely constructed & balanced 6½ months youngster. Not a lot of coat at present but what is coming through looks good. Very pretty, sweet & feminine head & expression, moved very well for one so young;

2 Bromley’s Bordaholic Florentine, a finer bitch all round than 1, she had more coat than 1 which was good & harsh. Not as typical in head as 1, moved well & held her topline very well.

PB (8)

1 Sansom’s Tufterslodge Tiz Only Me, very nice young lady who had a fabulous harsh dark grizzle coat. Very pretty head & expression & a lovely person all round, very well made throughout, lovely length of rib & strong loin. Good tailset, moved very well for a baby. BPB;

2 Holmes’ Bimandi’s Bubblicious, very nice type, larger ears than 1, nice tight coat, moved well;

3 Haydon & Gibbings’ Earthraw Catkin.

JB (6)

1 Johnson & Williams’ Quarryway Tansy, this young lady moved the best of the class, very easy & free-flowing ground covering movement. Harsh coat with more to come, very pretty head & expression, nice in body & bone, very sound throughout; 2 Paylet’s Badgerbeck The Vivacious at Jansara, very nice bl/t in a excellent coat, moved well;

3 Johnson’s Karison Koffee.

YB (8)

1 Bladen’s Foxyard Better Behave at Emblehope, gorgeous bl/t with a fabulous topline, very pretty head & expression. Good coat texture with more coming through, moved around the ring with plenty of drive. Very nicely constructed, lovely length of rib & great strong loin, I seriously considered her for top honours;

2 Morgan’s Blewecourt Harlem, very nicely made bitch, different type to 1 but with many qualities to admire. Very good coat & excellent driving movement, nice head & expression, correct length of rib, good straight front, unfortunate to meet 1;

3 Norris’ Brookbank Tweed.

PGB (13)

1 Wilson’s Olderhill Oriana, lovely bitch in excellent condition, really good in ribs & loin & with an excellent level topline which she held on the move as she flowed round the ring, with a pretty head & expression;

2 Norris’ Cast A Spell over Brookbank, a very nice honest type of Border T. Very hard, tight double coat & good pelt, beautiful head & typical expression, moved very well;

3 Waller’s Worker’s Playtime.

LB (15)

1 Docwra’s Bandicoot Serenade, beautiful bitch with the prettiest head & expression, she had the harshest of coats & was in fabulous condition. Lovely length of back & correct ribs, moved with drive & enthusiasm, the best feet of the day, small, tight & catlike with thick pads. One I have admired before & she pushed so hard for top honours, I really wish I had more with her. Am sure her day will come;

2 Culley’s Joncroft Scullery Maid by Apasc, different type but very pretty, very harsh coat, these two bitches showed probably the best coats of the day. Nicely constructed & sound on the move, my notes read ‘two very nice bitches’ & they were;

3 Shaw’s Early Valentine.

OB (14)

1 Dean’s Yeomeadow Heather for Tyrian, absolutely stunningly good bitch, everything I was looking for. From the moment she entered the ring she commanded it, gorgeous head & expression, lovely placed ears, great neckline leading into well placed shoulders, fantastic straight front with great, small feet. Lovely length of rib & strong loin, she had a fabulous harsh tight coat but with the loosest of pelts. I loved her energy & enthusiasm. Her movement was effortless & flowing but strong & powerful too. Beautifully presented & a very worthy ch. CC, her third & BOB;

2 Gregory’s Ch Remony Barley Twist, a gorgeous bitch, I was thoroughly spoilt for choice in this class. I have admired her for a long while & it was a pleasure to be able to go over her. She is so well made & knows it, she moved extremely well. Very pretty head & lovely feminine expression, great topline held steady on the move, with a good front & lovely feet. RCC;

3 Fryer’s Irton Polka.
