BORDER NAT DOG SHOW 09 Judge: Mrs Betty Judge BORDER JUDGE NAT DOG SHOW 09 Border Terriers I judged the breed just two years ago & I was alarmed at the change for the worse in the type & quality. The number of dogs entered was 115 with few absentees, four more being added to the original entry due to a catalogue error, an entry of which I was pleased with, especially in these financially hard times & terrier day being on a Thursday. I was really surprised to find exhibitors showing dogs with incorrect dentition & I found several of these. I was puzzled as to why upright shoulders & straight hind legs, some with hocks barely defined had become so prevalent. Generally movement was poor, but with construction so poor & with so many dogs with straight hind legs what else would you expect? Several single coats & thin skins. Heads, where have all the beautiful otter heads gone. I found round skulls, some with a distinct brow over the eyes, large round shaped ears & they were not close to the cheek. Several dogs & bitches I was unable to span due to round ribs, with no carryback of rib. There were two dogs with kinks in their tails. More seriously, bad temperaments on a couple of dogs was also depressing, I have never had a Border Terrier snap at me before until this show. In some of the classes, when the dogs came into the ring, overall quality was so poor I nearly lost the will to live. However, I was very pleased with my CC & RCC winners & both my BD & BB puppy winners, & several other class winners, so there are still some breeders out there with the correct interpretation of the Standard. Perhaps it would be a good idea for the less experienced breeders & exhibitors to take note of these experienced breeders’ & exhibitors’ good dogs & learn from them. I was delighted to see my BOB go G4 in a very strong group & then to see my BP winner go PG3 in an equally strong puppy group. MPD (4) 1 Wright’s Totherend Blues In The Night, bl/t, well up to size, in good coat, moved well; 2 Golding’s Ashbrae Fellman at Turnpike, pleasing head. Not the movement of 1, tail a little low set; 3 Guvercin Glebeheath Stan The Man. PD (8,1a) 1 Irving’s Dandyhow Beeline, 10 months, dog of excellent type & quality, excellent sized dog, spannable, excellent head, lovely eye, neat ears, good shoulders & carry back of rib, good bend of stifle & low set hocks, very good tail, in good coat, moved very well. BP & PG3; 2 Larner’s Hawcoat Blue Bertie, very nice puppy, excellent size & of good type, excellent head, moved well, well presented, close up; 3 Freer’s Felfree Ricardo Stubbs. JD (3) 1 Hunt’s Ethlencoral Pip of Ottaswell, typical in head & expression, good front & rear, moved very well & spannable, in good coat; 2 Regan’s Digmoor Ace’s High, strong headed dog, good expression, good in body overall. Lost out in movement to 1; 3 Roderick’s Barterhound Twister. ND (6,2) 1 E Pip of O; 2 Haydon & Gibbing’s Badgerbeck Fresco of Earthlaw, slightly rounded in skull, good underline, moved well in profile, excellent coat & pelt; 3 Milton’s Baillieswells Mosstowie. GD (4,1) 1 Griffith’s Bootstrap Lad, handy sized dog, good head & ears, easily spanned, nice expression, very good hindquarters, moved soundly; 2 Roderick’s Barterhound Twister, stronger dog all though & heavier. Just too much substance. Typical in head, in correct double coat, moved OK; 3 Bates’ Draycore Rockkafela of Kghills. PGD (4) 1 Haughton’s Chorbeck Moonlight Shadow, typical in head & expression, neat ears, excellent shoulders & carry back of rib, good underline. Short of coat, tail a little long; 2 Golding’s Master Minstrel at Beaconpike, dark grizzle, skull OK. Has a fairly deep stop, could have a better topline, but underline OK, moved OK; 3 Bates’ Finehaugh Fella at Keghills. LD (11) 1 Fryer’s Irton Up Helly Aa, very typy dog, excellent head & kind expression, up to size, beautifully balanced, moved very well & sound. Needed more coat to finish the picture, close up. RCC; 2 Johnsons & Williams’ Quarryway Dill, not such a strong dog as 1 but lots to like about him, excellent head, excellent expression, beautifully balanced, moved really well & sound, pushed 1 hard; 3 Wallace’s Hobholt Harrier. OD (7) 1 Lee’s Ch Tythrop Tapas, worthy ch, stood out here, one I have judged before but here he was spot on, very classy balanced dog, no need to write anything further to what has already been written about him. CC, pushed the bitch hard for BOB; 2 Hands’ Lutrabeck Likewise, smaller dog, good otter head, good upper arm & lay of shoulder, good feet, coat & pelt; 3 Sneddon’s Kersfell Comet. MPB (6,1) 1 Wright’s Totherend Taboo, super otter headed bitch, very well constructed all through, moved very well, neat feet; 2 Milton’s Baillieswells Isla, very attractive typically headed, 6 months bitch, moved well in profile. Hope she tightens up in front as tends to swing when moving towards you, pelt OK. Coat rather uneven in presentation; 3 Thomas’ Benattivo Gem Stone for Daluce. PB (16,2) 1 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Speckles, top class 8 months bitch from this clever breeder, superb construction & balance, excellent otter head, lovely eye, true Border all through, excellent movement. Note she is the daughter of my BOB winner the last time I judged, pushed hard for BP, but the puppy dog won it on maturity. It was a difficult decision, as both are superb examples of the breed; 2 Hands’ Lutrabeck Liberty, typy bitch, good skull shape, head & expression, nicely constructed, very good hindquarters & tail, moved very well, sound; 3 Larner’s Hawcoat Sweet Fairy. JB (13,2) 1 Furness’ Tallowbrook Memento of Quatford, bl/t of correct colour, quality bitch, stood out in this class, typical in head, strong jaw, big teeth, good topline, lovely carrot shaped tail, moved well. Would prefer to have slightly more angulated hindquarters; 2 Shaw’s Early Valentine, good head & eye, neat ears, good carry back of rib, good hindquarters, neat feet, good hindquarters, moved well; 3 Marriott’s Rhozzum Union Rose at Crewshill. NB (9,1) 1 T Twix at B, good head, straight in front. Feet rather flat. Good bend of stifle; 2 B Isla; 3 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh The Cranny Granny. GB (12,1) 1 Stockley’s Rhozzum Keynote with Foxfactor, bl/t, typical head & eye. Needs time to come together, would prefer more positive active movement; 2 Small’s Badgerbeck Tree Pipit at Tilmoray, similar to 1 but slightly heavier bitch, good in topline, moved OK; 3 Sneddon’s Kersfell Miss Chief. PGB (14,1) 1 R Keynote with F; 2 Vincent’s Lighthorne Lottie, typy headed bitch. Would prefer a slightly longer foreface. Good front & hind angulation, sound mover; 3 Pickering’s Picer Polyanthus. LB (8) 1 Hunt’s Ottaswell Carmen, very typical in head & expression, balanced bitch all through with quality, spannable. Would prefer just a little better shoulder placement. In excellent coat, moved soundly to gain 1; 2 Wright’s Totherend Toffee Apple, slightly stronger in head than 1 & with more substance all through but spannable, very good front, good topline & hindquarters, moved well; 3 Steven’s Cobstoneway Moonlight. OB (7,1) 1 McPherson’s Brumberhill Belle De Jour, nearly 6 years bitch, presented to perfection, very typical Border head, nice expression, neat ears, excellent construction all through, excellent tight feet & carrot shaped tail, spannable, excellent mover & very sound. On top form to take CC, BOB & G4; 2 Pickering’s Pricer Bright Idea, top class worthy ch bitch. Just could not touch 1, slightly more substance & shorter in body than 1. Moved very well. RCC; 3 Duke & Gill’s Brackaghmoss Bramble. BETTY JUDGE
