BORDER LEEDS 11 Judge: Mrs Beverley Barber BORDER JUDGE LEEDS 11 Border Terriers A lovely entry. My main aim when judging is to find a dog who fits as near the Standard as is possible, but must have overall good dog conformation. It must be balanced standing & also, most definitely, when it is on the move. This is a hard task because the perfect dog in any breed has yet to be found. When judging on this occasion I did manage to find dogs that had good front angulation, allowing the necessary reach to cover the ground, coupled with adequate rear angulation to give drive to the assembly & so presented a good picture on the move with no change to the dog’s appearance. I had very few short stepping, short backed dogs with such poor construction that the rear becomes noticeably higher than the shoulder when they are on the move. Heads, as always, were very varied, some with mouths out of line, there were some missing premolars which if this perpetuates will alter the head shape. Feet were mostly thick & neat, coats varied & undercoats were in the main a little sparse, but in view of the winter we have just had they have probably spent a long time shedding them. All the dogs I judged I could span, although chest shape was not always correct. 1 Fryer’s Irton Morse Code, excellent puppy, pleasing otter like head, correct bite, very mature for one so young, pleasing front & rear angulation, enough reach of neck, good strong topline & well set tail, moved out quite well, although moved bet in puppy challenge, keeps his shape on the move which is so important, hopefully one to watch in the future. BP; 2 Kenna & Watson’s Cynetkoys Cool Hand Luke, lovely free moving dog, liked his size & general appearance, good head with flat skull, narrow & flexible, pleasing rear angulation & tailset, good coat & pelt. Just needs maturity; 3 Fawcett’s Carrock Cragsman. PD (1) 1 Lowry’s Ravenside Workforce, typical otter like head, liked size & body shape, excellent pelt & coat, excellent puppy, moved very freely. JD (8) This class had a lot of variation & some bites not quite correct. Difficult class to judge. 1 Lowry’s Tythrop Tap On Wood for Ravenside, otter like head, correct bite, reasonable length of body, good coat & pelt, good bone, small well padded feet, overall pleasing picture, moved out well; 2 Sneddon’s Kersfell Comply Or Die, pleasing youngster, otter like head, correct bite with big teeth, good reach of neck into strong topline, good coat & pelt, moved out well; 3 Rose’s Kersfell Conquistador. ND (2) 1 Dickenson’s Ragtam Newmarket at Badgerholme, this youngster stepped up his game in this class, liked his otter like head & strong muzzle, good length to body, ribbed back sufficiently, quite flexible & moved well. Has a lot of maturity to do; 2 Wallace’s Hobholt Helmsman, pleasing dog, well angulated front & rear, good topline, strong through front, spannable, good coat & pelt, moved OK. PGD (8) 1 Waldron’s Intack Red Admiral, liked this one very much, strong head with flat skull, big teeth & strong jaw, enough reach of neck, well laid shoulder, good length of loin, strong topline & pleasing rear angulation. Just a little close behind when moving but still covers the ground well & presents an overall pleasing picture; 2 Fraser & Butler’s Ycart Best Shot Remmington, slighter in build to 1, good shape to head, correct bite, good shoulders & length to body, well set tail & strength to back, moved OK, although spoiled by high hock action; 3 K Conquistador. LD (15) Excellent class, my five placed dogs excelled when on the move, could easily change places on another day, they were a privilege to judge. 1 McPherson’s Brumberhill Benchmarked, my notes say poetry in motion, excels in all aspects of the Standard, moves so well it is such a pleasure to watch, beautiful otter like head without exaggeration, good crest to neck which enhances the otter appearance, excellent shoulder, strong topline, well ribbed back, good length to loin, well set rear with good angulation, has no exaggerations & here did all that was asked of him, beautifully turned out. CC & BOB; 2 Sneddon’s Chesterton Top Hat And Tails, fine dog, just a shade larger than 1 but a pleasure to judge & go over. Superb head, correct mouth, big teeth, good reach of neck, front & rear angulation good with length to loin & strong topline, superb on the move, turned out in fine fettle; 3 Matthews’ Rozzum King Pin. OD (8) Two beautiful dogs headed this class. 1 Wallace’s Ch Hobholt Harrier, strong head of otterlike shape, strong jaw, correct bite & big teeth, strong body shape, excellent front & rear angulation, good length to body, moves very well carrying his body & tail strongly, excellent coat & pelt, every inch a ch. RCC; 2 Lee’s Ch Tythrop Tapas, excellent head, correct bite & big teeth, superb length to neck, good body shape with strong front, good length to loin & strong topline, excellent coat & pelt. Just didn’t move quite as well as 1. Every inch a ch; 3 Hodgeson’s Solitary Mist. 1 Peacock’s Ragtam Nutmeg, liked this youngster very much, lovely narrow body shape, strong yet feminine otterlike head, beautiful flow from head to neck, good shoulder, length to body, topline & tailset, which were all held well on the move, pushed hard for BPB; 2 Fryer’s Irton Enigma, quality puppy, excelled in head & beautiful body shape, moved very well keeping her body shape on the move. Liked this one very much but coat not quite right; 3 Richardson’s Staynorwood Fortune. PB (1) 1 Lee’s Tythrop Touch Wood, very beautiful puppy, superb otterlike head, strong teeth & jaw, piercing dark eyes that didn’t miss anything, well placed shoulders & equally good rear angulation, narrow & good length to body, presented a superb picture standing & on the move. BPB. JB (14) Quality class. 1 Wildey’s Bramblebrae Violet at Shiftyfox, very good quality youngster, bl/t of good colour, otterlike head with correct bite, pleasing flow from neck to shoulder, front & rear angulation good, narrow with good length to loin, moved very well. RCC, missed out on top honours due to immaturity, handler must work on presentation for the future, but I’m sure she will make it; 2 Marwood’s Kersfell Sea The Stars at Annesuz, liked this one as much as 1. Beautiful blue, otterlike head, flat skull, correct bite, big teeth, superb body shape, good shoulders & rear, held the picture on the move. Hope she goes on to emulate her horsey namesake; 3 James’ Golden Rosa at Blackmine. NB (6) 1 K Sea The Stars at A, star quality in this class; 2 Palmer’s Ragtam Liberty, quality grizzle bitch, pleasing body shape, good head & correct bite, good reach of neck, nice & narrow, good length to loin, moved very well; 3 Johnson’s Karison Kokoa. PGB (12) 1 Coleman’s Hartswelin Tip Top, liked this bitch, pleasing body shape having good front & rear angulation, good length to loin, head was correctly shaped but could do with it being a little stronger, moved out well; 2 Sneddon’s Kersfell Miss Jean Brodie, good outline to this blue, excels in front angulation & strong topline, clean strong head, correct bite with big teeth, moved out well; 3 Dickinson’s Badgerholme Ascot Opal. LB (12) Cracking class, my five winners were all equally good & I’m sure will change places on another day. 1 Sharp’s Rhozzum User Friendly, excellent bitch built with the Standard in mind, otterlike head, really strong jaw, flat skull, good reach of neck, good front assembly complemented by equally good rear angulation, narrow throughout & well ribbed back, tailset correct, overall balanced picture, moved out beautifully, a pleasure to go over & an absolute pleasure to award her CC; 2 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Singsong, beautifully constructed grizzle, otterlike head, flat skull, strong muzzle, correct bite, neat ears, good reach of neck flowing into nicely angulated shoulders, narrow throughout, well ribbed back, level topline, well placed tail, moved well; 3 Coleman’s Hartswelin Far Away.
