BORDER JUDGE CRUFTS 15

Border Terriers

First of all I would like to thank the KC for the honour & pleasure of judging this prestigious show. I must then thank my efficient & capable stewards who kept me on track & looked after me through the day. Most of all I would like to thank the exhibitors who rose from their beds at early hours & drove many miles to give me an entry of Border Terriers to be proud of & one which is was a delight to judge. It was not only strong numerically strong but also in depth of quality. It is a cliché to say that there were not enough cards to go around but in this entry it was certainly true. Determining all the final line up in each class was difficult & also in many deciding who should make the short list was also a challenge. Good dogs went without a card, ones who in a different entry I would have been happy to see as winners. In the challenges decisions remained tough & more than those that took the top honours were worthy of doing so & I would have been very pleased to have had more awards to give out.

In the days following this year’s show Crufts, dog shows & those who participate in them came in for some criticism. The picture painted by the media at this time was certainly not my experience. Before, during & after the show I found show people to be nothing but good natured, genuine & supportive. I enjoyed every minute of my day & hope that those that supported me with an entry or as spectators at the ringside did so too.

VD (11,1a)

What a lovely way to start the day. I just love a veteran class & this one was one of the best. Thank you for making the early start & giving me some wonderful mature gentlemen to judge. It says a lot about our breed that it can produce a class of 10 such lovely veterans.

1 Dean’s Ch Cedarhill Authorized, rising 8, this boy is maturing rather than aging. Shown in lovely condition with rough coat, he is balanced with a good reach of neck, good topline & well set on tail. He moved well & stood out in this class of good veterans & was certainly in the mix on the challenge;

2 Christensen’s Int Ch Danchos Midas, at 10 years of age this boy is a credit to his owner. He has bags of Border type, with a super head with a good strong muzzle & a dark eye. He was shown today in a good pin wire harsh double coat. He is spannable with ribs carried well back;

3 Richardson’s Ragatam Hawk at Staynorwood, an 8 year old not looking his age. He is a good sized, balanced dog with a good front & narrow ribs who looked good on the move. Res Harrison’s Ch Iacheslei Torus. VHC Johnson’s Karison Kasper.

MPD (1)

1 Ramus’ Onthill Aramis, this blue in good thick double coat stood alone but would have made a worthy winner in competition. Good for size, he has a good reach of neck, spanable ribs well laid back to a good loin & strong quarters.

PD (9,1)

1 Clark’s Gameway Mcvitie, quality puppy, in good jacket on a loose pelt, showing with activity. He has a good neck, narrow front & is right for size being easily spanned with ribs nicely carried back. The challenge for BP was a tough decision which could have gone either way with the bitch’s maturity going in her favour;

2 North’s Bandicoot Jimmy Choo at Northborders, typical masculine puppy with a good strong head with a short muzzle, good skull & neat dark ears. Good topline finished by a well set on tail. Moved out well;

3 Sneddon’s Kersfell Cool River, a nicely sized puppy who is good to go over. He has spans easily & has a good length of rib & back with nicely turned quarters. Just out of minor puppy he was giving a lot away to the others in maturity. Res Haughton’s Marton Magic mit Chorbeck. VHC Lothian’s Lairehope Diamant Rouge.

JD (19,2)

1 Metcalfe’s Dandyhow Friendly Fire at Chevinor, eyecatching junior with the best of coats & pelt. Good strong masculine head with a correct bite & keen expression. Pleasing in outline with a good neck, strong loin & good quarters;

2 Lockley’s Crazy Train Pilgrim to Chatmoss, another quality junior who pushed hard for the win. Good in neck, narrow front, easily spanned ribs & well muscled quarters. Shown in good thick coat;

3 Armstrong’s Ploughdown Plato, rangy blue dog shown in good condition in tight harsh coat. He has a pleasing profile & is narrow through his front & ribs. Has good tight feet. Res Holmes’ Barnby Caramel Wafer at Bimandi. VHC Brewster & Green’s Breckgreen Soldier Blue.

YD (19,2)

1 Lee’s Tythrop Timepiece, a quality blue dog making the most of himself showing on a loose lead & shown in super condition with a harsh jacket. Nice for size he is narrow in front with narrow ribs carried well back into a strong loin & has racy quarters. Another one who made his mark in the challenge;

2 Thomas’ Daluce King Of Emotion, another shown in correct thick double coat he is pleasing in outline with a good topline & well set tail. He has a good strong head with short strong muzzle, neat well placed ears & pleasing expression;

3 Broomhead’s Plushcourt The Boss Bee at Manorcroft, nicely sized fit young dog, easily spanned ribs, good topline & well muscled quarters. Could have challenged harder with a little more jacket. Res Tyumentseva’s Cedarhill No Excuse Needed. VHC Ter Weele’s Very Famous JoepV D Border.

GD (16,3)

The first two were both shown in good condition with super tight harsh coats. Both are good for type with good heads & were difficult to split with the maturity of the first making the difference.

1 Johnson’s Karison Keiser, neat red dog with lots of border type. Pleasing in outline with a good neck & topline finished with a well set on tail. Good strong well proportioned head with strong muzzle & neat ears. In good jacket on a thick loose pelt;

2 Lorraine & Thomas’ Raleniro Second Time Around, good head with keen expression. Nice in profile with good reach of neck, good shoulders, nicely proportioned body & good quarters;

3 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Caius, neatly proportion racy blue dog, with good neck & shoulder & good neat feet. Res Holmes’ Barnby Caramel Wafer at Bimandi. VHC Brewster & Green’s Breckgreen Soldier Blue.

PGD (19,1)

1 Greenhill & Thomas’ Orangebox Stewards Enquiry into Tufterslodge, well balanced youngster in good jacket with lots of Border type. Good reach of neck to well proportioned body, strong loin & nicely turned quarters;

2 Stirling’s Chorbeck Snowfire, another with good type, well balanced with good body proportions. Nice in shoulder & good in topline with good tailset. Well muscled with strong quarters;

3 Hall & Ellis’ Bluesboy at Brackenfell, liked this boy’s type. He has a super head, a good short carrot shaped tail & was shown in good coat. At 6 years old he looks well for his age. Res Yeates’ Bristoc Rock The Boat at Bluebabel. VHC Robinson’s James Paw Georgie Boy.

MLD (15,4)

1 Brewster & Green’s Stowthorney Swinging Sam, workman like dog, easily spanned, racy, narrow all through & put down in good hard condition. Pleasing in head with a keen expression;

2 Barber’s Alcumlow Solitaire, another racy narrow dog, narrow in front, with good reach of neck who moved out well. May have pushed harder for the class with more coat;

3 Hillman’s Badgerbeck Prototype, nicely balanced dog shown in good thick jacket. Good length of back with ribs carried well back to strong loins. Res Allison’s Remony Merry Gentleman. VHC Fielding’s Chatmoss Les Diables Rouges Ir J Ch Cw '14.

LD (16,2)

There were some really tough decisions to make in this class.

1 Scott’s Oughterside Mintys Pride, right sized narrow dog, good reach of neck, good in front, pleasing in rib & loin. Covered the ground nicely on the move. Good in head with a keen expression;

2 Fletcher’s Wadesleia Mr Herriot, masculine dog put down to the minute in good thick harsh jacket on a thick pelt. Good topline & tailset, strong well muscled quarters & neat feet. Good strong head with strong muzzle, dark eye & neat ears;

3 Larner’s Hawcoat Lord George, another masculine type good in forehand having a good shoulder, narrow front, good neck & pleasing head & expression. Res Matthews’ Tojamatt Warlord. VHC Girling’s Benattivo Betfred.

OD (24,4)

I really needed more cards for this hotly contested class where some super dogs did not make the line up.

1 Hall & Ellis’ Ch Brackenfell Bok to Bach, a true showman who makes the most of all his attributes. Even in this strong class of quality border dogs he stood away. However, he is not just an eyecatcher & when you get your hands on him you find a quality, right sized, spannable dog with a strong masculine head with a keen expression. He is balanced & narrow with good ribs carried well back to a good loin with strong racy quarters & a super turn of stifle. He was my BP last time I judged & I could not deny him the Dog CC & BOB this time & I was thrilled to see him go G3;

2 James & Dickinson’s Ch Badgerholme Epsom Jet, shown in the best of condition with a good harsh blue coat at it’s very best this is another who knows how to make the most of his qualities. He is balanced overall with & has a good neck & topline finished by a well set tail. He is easily spanned & his ribs are well carried back. He moved well to take a very hotly contested RCC;

3 Spencer’s Ch Cobstoneway River Magic, when I have judged this boy before he scored on the strength of his strong masculine head, his well angulated quarters & his overall balance & type & he did so again on this occasion. He has the thickest of pelts topped by a super thick harsh coat. Res Wilson’s Ch Olderhill Afortunado. VHC Szeliga’s Sk/Pol Ch Pixel Rog Wojskiego.

GCD (16)

1 Metcalfe’s Dandyhow Friendly Fire at Chevinor, 1 in JD;

2 Harrison’s Ch Iacheslei Torus, lots to like about this worthy champion now a veteran. He is a typical dog shown in good condition with a good harsh coat. He is balanced & good for size & moved out well;

3 Johnson’s Karison Kasper, another veteran with bags of type showing like a youngster. He is a lovely size & has a good masculine head with a strong muzzle, good skull & neat ears. Res Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Caius. VHC Speake’s Cedarhill Stargazer.

VB (16,5)

The same comments apply here as did to the veteran dog class. Another splendid class of lovely sound mature Borders suggesting as a breed we are getting a lot right.

1 Baxter’s AMGCH Sulan Fancy That, a classy bitch not looking her age & showing like a youngster. Of correct size with good head, pleasing neck & good quarters. She was put down in super neat order with a good harsh coat & thick pelt;

2 Day’s Gameway Cappuccino of Withershins, a racy narrow balanced 10 year old in great condition being well muscled & shown in tight harsh coat. Even though she is two years older than the first she still challenged her for the class;

3 Williams’ Ch Hollowmoor Coremy, at 12 years old this girl still shows all the qualities which gained her the title of champion. She was shown in lovely order with the best of coats & is a credit to her owner & the breed. Res Small’s Badgerbeck Tree Pipit at Tilmoray. VHC Brewster & Green’s Breckgreen Blue Christmas.

MPB (1)
