BORDER JUDGE BOURNEMOUTH 09

Border Terriers

I think we have a real problem with the front construction & movement in the breed; there were far too many exhibits with short, steep upper arms, often resulting in a build up of bulky muscle on the outer line of the shoulder & the movement in front on many was very poor. The Border is “essentially a working terrier” & this type of construction will seriously compromise its ability to work.

MPD (5)

1 Anscombe’s Orangebox Firecracker, nice head & expression, lovely big teeth with correct bite, narrow front, good coat & pelt, moved out well. BPD;

2 Martin’s Bortino High Society, excellent harsh coat, rather nervous but moved well. Would not want him to grow on much as he was quite difficult to span;

3 Hollingsbee’s Xapex Santiago at Otterwood.

PD (3,1a)

1 Parton’s Conmarel Bobbin, dark grizzle leggy youngster, old-fashioned style of head with a flat, refined, skull & keen eye, strong jaw if a little long in muzzle, has a nice length of neck flowing into well laid shoulders, one of the few with correct front construction resulting in a lovely straight front, good coat & pelt, moved with drive from hindquarters & correct front movement;

2 South’s Borderella Day Tripper, leggy grizzle puppy with a nice length of body, strong head but has a domed skull which might flatten as the head matures. Good coat & pelt. Couldn’t match 1 in front movement.

JD (8)

Strong class.

1 Larner’s Hawcoat Blue Bertie, promising young grizzle with an excellent coat & pelt, handy size, easy to span, good neck & shoulders, lovely head & expression, big teeth with correct bite, excellent mover, really strides out round the ring. In close contention for the RCC but just seemed to flag in the challenge;

2 Dean’s Digmoor Captain Rook by Tyrian, grizzle with good length of body, harsh coat but could be thicker in pelt, nice head, good mover who strides out well;

3 Hunt’s Ethlencoral Pip of Ottaswell.

ND (6,1)

1 X Santiago at O, 7 months b/t, 3 in MP, moved better in this class, good coat & pelt, big teeth, nice head & expression. Looks deep in body in relation to length of leg but might still have some growing to do;

2 Wilson’s Dandyhow Beekeeper at Olderhill, youngster with nice reach of neck, OK in head, good coat & moved well. Rather deep in body;

3 Rumsam’s Jenabeck Soloist.

GD (5)

1 Dean’s Yeomeadow Sorrel for Tyrian, leggy bl/t with good length of body, strong head with keen expression, moved out well;

2 Cobbledick’s Moonlight Cowboy, dark grizzle in full coat which looked just about to blow but had good harsh texture. Pelt a bit thin, difficult to span & shorter in body than 1. Strong head with a keen expression, good mover;

3 Clarke’s Hynerbrook Mountain Ash.

PGD (7)

1 Wrenn & Langdon’s Hoary Morning, handy size dog, strong head, narrow front, coat looked ready to blow but seemed to have a good harsh texture, sound dog who moved well;

2 Exley’s Foxfactor Tambourine Man, strong head, good coat & pelt, hind movement was good but could be better in front;

3 Newman’s Nookshot Highland Toffee.

LD (7)

1 Wallace’s Hobholt Harrier, well balanced grizzle dog with an excellent coat & thick pelt, lovely otter head with a strong jaw & large teeth, dark eyes with keen expression, good neck flowing into clean well laid shoulders, level topline which he holds on the move, well ribbed back, narrow body of good length & a particularly good underline (something of a rarity), lovely straight, narrow front, excellent mover who covers the ground well with an easy stride. CC;

2 Regan’s Digmoor Ace’s High, good head & keen expression, in full coat. A bit shorter in body than 1. Moved well but could not match 1 for length of stride;

3 Barber’s Alcumlow Starstruck.

OD (10,3)

1 Judge’s Mansergh Float to Plushcourt, masculine, light grizzle dog of handy size, good length of body & narrow ribs, carried well back, presents a lovely outline as he strides out effortlessly round the ring, holding his topline well, flat, refined skull with neat ears & a good neck flowing into clean shoulders, straight, narrow front, not a lot of coat but enough to feel the texture, moved really well. RCC;

2 Christensen’s Dutch/Ger/Int Danchos Midas, balanced dog with a strong head, narrow front, good body of decent length & a good coat & pelt, moved well;

3 Hollingsbee’s Ch Otterwood Amex.

MPB (5,1)

1 Martin’s Bortino Smiling Queen, just 6 months, good head, excellent coat & pelt, moved & showed really well; 2 Tuffin’s Oatberry Rheme, nice youngster with a harsh coat & thick pelt, good legs & feet, good head, moved well;

3 Crockett’s Melincoed Andante.

PB (6)

1 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Speckles, racy light grizzle with superb conformation, excellent straight front, level topline, neat feet, she has a lovely otter head & good coat & pelt, a joy to watch on the move, especially in profile where she covers the ground effortlessly on a long easy stride, an exciting prospect. BP;

2 Judge’s Plushcourt The Bees Knees, bl/t with a harsh coat & thick pelt, lovely otter head, good conformation & with a very good front, good mover, free striding covering the ground with ease, promising puppy, close decision between the first two in this class;

3 Milton’s Baillieswells Isla.

JB (9,1

) A very close decision between the first two in this class.

1 Waller’s Worker’s Playtime, handy size light grizzle with a good head & expression, in very good fettle with an excellent coat & pelt, narrow front, good legs & feet, moved really well;

2 Jackson & Dugdale’s Highfell Remedy, dark grizzle with a superb depth of coat, harsh in texture with a good undercoat & the thickest of pelts, all of which made her look heavier than she actually is. To be critical I would prefer a little more length of leg. A very well constructed bitch with a good front, superb old-fashioned otter head with a flat, refined skull & strong jaw, she reminded me of some of the good bitches around in the 1970s, very good mover;

3 Woollacott’s Tufterslodge Party Time.

NB (8)

1 Worker’s Playtime;

2 Dean’s Digmoor Kindred Spirit for Tyrian, leggy grizzle with a good length of body & lovely racy outline, straight, narrow front & a strong head. Coat just starting to blow. Moved well when she settled down, she seemed to be really enjoying her outing;

3 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Singsong.

GB (3) Wilson’s Lorrivale Lerryn of Olderhill, racy bl/t with a harsh topcoat, clean shoulders & good topline, moved OK;

2 Holmes’ Trixdale Twix at Bimandi, light grizzle with a strong head, heavier all through than 1. Could not span her, & not as good in topline. Moved OK; 3 Moffat’s Laurelton Summer Breeze.

PGB (11)

1 Dean’s Yeomeadow Heather for Tyrian, racy bl/t with an excellent jacket & thick pelt, good head with keen expression, level topline & presented a lovely outline, good legs & feet, moved well but seemed to have her mind on other things at times;

2 H Remedy;

3 Small’s Badgerbeck Tree Pipit at Tilmoray.

LB (14,2)

1 Roberts’ Baywillow Canape at Smalesmouth, top size grizzle with a strong head, in excellent harsh coat & with a thick pelt, good legs & feet, moved really well with good drive from the hindquarters. Would prefer her a shade smaller all through;

2 Freivokh’s Dugaden Dilemma at Artwork, biggish bitch, quite difficult to span; good head & topline but rather short of coat, hind movement was good but failed in front movement, showed well;

3 Mooney’s Chesterton Flirtation.

OB (5,1)

1 Mooney’s Chesterton Broken Promise, what a beautiful balanced bitch, lovely otter head, feminine & with a super flat, refined skull, strong jaw, good legs & feet & with a good coat & pelt, good topline & underline, giving a lovely racy outline, narrow straight front & super conformation throughout, with narrow ribs carried well back, very good mover with good drive from the hindquarters, strode out effortlessly around the ring, a joy to watch on the move. I loved her when she was a puppy & she just seems to have got better. CC, her second, & BOB;

2 Barber’s Mansergh Maisytoats at Alcumlow, racy, dark grizzle bitch who was in good fettle with a harsh coat & thick pelt, narrow front & good legs & feet. Not quite as good in head as 1 but has a lovely flat skull, strong muzzle & keen expression, nice length of neck & clean shoulders, narrow well ribbed back body, good conformation, moved really well with good drive from the hindquarters. RCC;

3 Christensen’s Dan/Int Ch Carmen.
