My thanks to the Three Counties Committee for their invitation to judge this vulnerable native breed. Consistently low entries are concerning and discouraging signs for any breed. I'd like to thank the exhibitors for their entry and sportsmanship. Thank you to my two excellent stewards Lynette and Liz for their attentive hard work.

1ST The New Jackel (Miss D J & Mr D J T Williams)
19-month-old male, well boned, up to size of pleasing colour. Good dentition. Slight doming and breadth to skull affects ear set and low carriage Small, dark eye. Correct stop. Would prefer more depth to muzzle. Harsh coat texture with a dense jacket and ample furnishings. However, he is rather long in back with croup dropping away delivers a lower set on but tail of good shape and carriage. Moderate neck, would prefer a lower shoulder lay, standing somewhat out at elbow and rather loose in front. Very full in rib and body. Currently carrying too much weight at present, which detracts from his overall balance and outline. On the move he was too close behind and tended to single-track, lacking the freedom, drive and precision of action I was looking for. A youngster with some pleasing breed characteristics who would benefit from improved body condition and further ring experience RBD

1ST Westpenn Code Breaker at Perrisblu (Mr P Davies)
Characterful, animated, compact dog of pleasing size and excellent breed type. His immaculately presented harsh, close jacket was very skillfully prepared. Flat skull of moderate width, correct degree of stop with strong muzzle and correct scissor bite. Loved his expressive neat ears for size, lift and carriage, combined with his small dark eyes gave him that terrier 'devil may care' expression hinting at the big personality lurking under the surface. Well-arched neck flowing into an excellent lay of shoulder. Deep, strong front, deep brisket short back, well ribbed up with just the right amount of spring, excellent short couplings and strong loin. Well-muscled body and good rear quarters, although I would prefer a little more substance behind the well set on, erect tail which completes the appearance of a balanced, fit-for-purpose workmanlike terrier. Full of character and good humour, he moved out well, maintaining a stylish and elegant outline whilst in a playful mood up on his toes, teasing his handler who sensitively presented him to perfection enabling him to show off his many attributes whilst still allowing him to enjoy his day. A very appealing exhibit and I was delighted to see him later awarded Terrier Group 4 BD BOB

1ST Westpenn Just for You (Lady R Watkin-Jones)
Welsh Terrier Bitch
"29-month-old bitch of feminine type of good colour. Scissor bite, small dark eye with a rather attractive dreamy expression, Longer in muzzle than preferred, with some leathering evident on muzzle and ears. Ears somewhat high set. Square in outline and relatively compact through the body, with good ribbing, although a little long in loin. Would benefit from more reach of neck, a better lay of shoulder and straighter tail carriage to improve overall balance. Also Soft leg furnishings on the day. Spirited and full of character, she gave her handler a challenging time and did not always cooperate, making movement difficult to assess fully. When settled she showed some drive on the move holding her topline. A feminine exhibit who would benefit from further ring training to enable her many attributes to be seen to better advantage. Best Opposite Sex.
