Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers
The dog world has received much criticism of late regarding breeders exaggerating their breeds to become more extreme examples. Our breed is one where the Standard calls for moderation & for exaggeration to be penalised & I’m pleased to say I found little or no exaggeration, a reassuring sign that as a breed we recognise & strive the skill of breeding moderation. However there are some defining breed specific points that need some consideration & were not prevalent today. The major one being the coat – soft & silky, falling in loose waves – many today were too pale, too black & lacking any real luster. The gait should be long & low, this is most important for a terrier that was required to herd as well be quick over a short distance – some today were too straight in shoulder which prevents this strived for stride. Not forgetting that big black nose, the finishing touch of this joker.
1 Tilley’s Janeyjimjams Jubilee Star at Starzak, good for size, coat stood out as rich & golden in colour, good scissor bite, dark hazel eyes, perfect ears being smallish & well set, neat tail arched nicely over back;
2 Williams’ Flaxela The Midas Touch, first show today so slightly unsettled but is promising, nice size, super tailset & arch of tail, moved with drive fore & aft, good earset, scissor bite;
3 Williams’ Flaxela Living Legend of Gwendonydd.
1 Cooper’s Janey Jimjams Jubilee Juke, Irish type boy, has a pleasing terrier like attitude, longer cast, promising coat of good colour, good scissor bite & dark pigment all over;
2 Scobie’s Amberstar I Am The Walrus, 1 year, heavy coated which is still to clear, ideal big black nose, good earset, a little more trimming would enhance outline, lots of personality.
1 Blandford’s Janeyjimjams Joshua, 2 years with a blonde coat falling in a super loose wave, strong head with well defined stop & jowl, long neck going into well laid back shoulder, square in shape which a nicely arched tail. One to watch.
1 Meister & Brooks’ Silkcroft Crests Of Waves, good size & clear coloured coat, nice layback of shoulder, good reach of neck, level topline & short couplings then high tailset with correct tail formed in nice arch, moved with drive;
2 Revis’ Tiareko Niflheim’s Wizard, well balanced, larger dog than 1, good reach of neck & lay of shoulder, longer cast than 1 & not showing as much drive on the move today;
3 Bristow’s Denzilly Sweet Destiny for Avard.
1 Fallon’s Ch Janeyjimjams Jenson, have judged & commented on him several times before, every ounce of him is Ch quality, he displays the aforementioned breed specific features perfectly: that long low reach gliding across the ground – effortlessly, golden coat that glows & that typical wheaten expression. CC & BOB;
2 Howe’s Daisymaes Enforcer, pushed 1 hard today on the move & really covers ground moving around the ring, black dark pigment, straighter shoulders than 1, soft coat with a real wave, a lot to like about this boy. RCC;
3 Satherley & Smith’s Am Ch Haldane Chasin’ Tail.
1 Howe’s Flaxela New Vision at Daisymaes, four nice pups in this class although all quite different. Like the type, rich coat colour of promising texture, shoulders nicely laid back, pleasing square outline, 9 months & shouldn’t grow on. BP;
2 Jacobs & Gales’ Flaxela Drop Dead Gorgeous, well proportioned, very feminine pup, long reach of neck, square shape & moved with drive, slightly paler in colour with good texture;
3 Atyeo’s Kanjuley Scarlet Rose.
1 Satherley’s Silkcroft Auroras Encore, very feminine type, correct colour & coat looking promising falling in a loose wave, square, compact with short couplings, good rear angulation, high tailset & lively mover;
2 Clarke’s Weaver Of Dreams, again nice colour with a wave, dark pigment, slightly more developed than 1 but also very feminine, move with drive fore & aft, good reach of neck;
3 Grant’s Dannebriel Gladly Godetia.
1 Hughlock’s Janeyjimjams Jolene, very nice type, colour of golden wheat with a loose wave, good earset, scissor bite, reachy neck & enough lay of shoulder, correct tail arching over back;
2 Prouse’s Garsayno Gold Jill, good on the move covering ample ground, clear coloured coat with a shine, dark pigment all round, well angulated rear;
3 Salisbury’s Orliscwt Worth The Wait.
1 Herbert’s Calvenace She’s The One at Julibidd, balanced, very feminine, golden blonde coat, nothing exaggerated & everything flowed, good earset, lovely expression & a happy go lucky attitude which personifies this breed;
2 Hill’s Janeyjimjams Jive Queen, another nice bitch, heavier type & a really lovely coat – rich in colour & falling in a wave, reachy neck, shortish back & very stylish, well set on arched tail;
3 Satherley’s Silkcroft Sky Full Of Stars.
1 Satherley’s Ch Silkcroft Colour Of Magic, very stylish & presented immaculately, reachy neck, good bend of stifle, well set & well arched tail creates an eyecatching outline, covers ground on the move & keeps a bright terrier expression. CC;
2 Dowdy’s Ch Denzilly Sweet Rebel, very appealing type, good coat colour falling in a soft loose wave, square short coupled, compact which is refreshing as the bitches in general a tad big, hocks well let down, shoulders ideally laid back, best class of the day with plenty of quality to choose from. RCC;
3 Charleton’s Ch Janeyjimjams Jemima.
1 Salisbury’s Orliscwt Lillee The Pink, stunning Irish bitch who doesn’t look her age, square in shape & enough angulation on shoulder & rear to produce a steady flowing gait covering plenty of ground, very dark pigment & a real picture. BV;
2 Taylor’s Ch Amberstar Eight Days A Week, 8 years in very good condition, longer cast than 1 with very good angulation, rich coat colour falling in the desired wave, lovely scissor bite;
3 Willaims’ Ch Brynhir Rochelle Lil Rock.
