It was an honour and a pleasure to judge at the National Terrier Show and I am grateful to the Show Committee for inviting me, the exhibitors for bringing their dogs to show to me and the two very able Stewards for keeping the ring going in an efficient manner and dealing with the admin.

Please take the following observations in the spirit they are intended which is for general improvement. On the whole I feel that mouths are continuing to improve but pigmentation needs to be watched as there were several with pale eye rims and bone coloured claws. Movement was difficult to assess on occasion and wasn’t helped by some exhibitors not being in unison with their dogs. Watch the junior handlers, they follow instructions to the letter, they move in straight lines, know exactly what the dog is doing and go at an appropriate pace to get the best performance from their exhibit. Presentation is still variable and doesn’t always enhance the dog; some continue to cut the fall in a straight line above the eyes, which I think spoils the Wheaten’s soft expression. Needless to say, some hard decisions had to be made in the larger classes and dogs that went cardless today will surely win on other days.

SPD or B (1)

1. Leverton’s Carkbark Goodluck Charm : Good for size. Excellent pigmentation. Coat soft and with waves. Enough neck, straight front, slightly long in loin. Not using his tail today. Movement okay.

MPD (3)

1. Moles’ & Williams’ Celtannia Atlantic Gold : Well handled and well schooled for age. Square outline, good head with flat skull, good mouth with excellent big teeth and scissor bite. Arched neck into good shoulders, Level topline with tail set on top. Good rear angulation; movement to settle.

2. Holding’s Celtannia Atlantic Gigolo : More giddy than his brother although not a problem at this age! A tad longer in loin, but level topline and good tail set. Nice rear angulation.

3. Troke’s Janeyjimjams Jammy Dodge

PD (4)

1. Kerrigan’s Abiqua Wild Piannisimo : All masculine pup, up to size. Strong head with excellent pigmentation, big teeth and scissor bite. Good body with well-laid shoulders, straight front with well boned legs. Deep chest, short coupled and nicely angulated rear. Positive movement ensured BPD.

2. Wardle’s Denzilly He’s Got The Look : Smaller size than 1, and less mature although similar in age. Liked his outline and he possesses a silky, wavy coat. Good front and shoulder placement, level topline, required tailset. Movement was a little sluggish today, but good prospects.

3. Troke’s Janeyjimjams Jammy Dodger

JD (2)

1. Hanna’s Kinaelan Jixditti : Shown in good hard condition. Lovely wedge shaped head, good mouth, excellent neck and front construction. Tail set spot on, good rear angulation, moved with drive.

2. Ward-Walker’s Eblanahalls A Fine Half : Unsettled, seemed to have been spooked by something as he entered the ring, consequently difficult to assess and his movement was erratic. Coat soft and silky.

GD (2)

1. Lui’s Eblanahalls Aye Right : A size too big for me, but he is a solid well made dog. Lovely head with arched neck flowing into good shoulders and level topline with tail set on top. Short coat still to develop, but what is there is soft and silky with the required wave. Up on his toes and lively mover.

2. Boast’s Kaliclan Long May You Run : Smaller than 1; Nice front on him, with good rear angulation giving a square outline. Coat was pale and had a wooliness that I would associate with his stage of development. He was not up to his game today.

PGD (1)

1. Thorburn’s Northridge Me And Tennessee : Good for size and shape. Typical head. Pale soft coat that is still to fully develop its silkiness and sheen. Straight front with level topline and well set tail. Good depth of chest. Moved okay.

LD (7)

1. Johnson’s Garsayno Gold Kipling : First impressions were of a compact, alert dog of correct size. Nice head, excellent pigmentation, good mouth with good sized teeth. Strong neck going into well-laid shoulders and a level topline with well set tail. Good depth of chest. Coat very soft with waves and colour developing nicely. Moved with drive.

2. Tilley’s Janeyjimjams Jubilee Star At Starzak Sh.CM : Smart dog presented in excellent condition. Coat deeper colour than 1, but not as soft. Good head, good front assembly and deep chest, level topline, longer in loin than 1. Nicely angulated rear. Moved well.

3. Watkins’ Zaraslake Lucky Seven

OD (14 – 3 a.)

1. Mapson’s Ch/Am Ch Abiqua Wild Jack Of Hearts Sh.CM : This dog caught my eye the moment he entered the ring, presentation was stunning and he didn’t disappoint at any stage. Good for size and possessing a soft coat of clear Wheaten colour throughout. Masculine head, flat skull with well set ears, dark eye and pigmentation; scissor bite. Arched neck flowing into well-placed shoulders, level topline, shortcoupled with tail set on top. Straight front and nicely angulated rear. Moved with drive to take the DCC and BOB.

2. Dowdy’s Ch Greentree Gold Mombo To Denzilly (Imp) Another impressive dog. Compact and well presented. Lovely head, correct mouth, good neck into well laid shoulders. Good spring of rib, deep chest. Level topline, short coupled and with moderate rear angulation. Quality coat of pretty colour. Good mover. RCC.

3. Withington’s Ch Fantasa Blonde Rufas

MPB (6 – 2 a.)

I was compelled to write “Oh! So naughty!” in my notes – all these pups were a delight.

1. Moles’ & Williams’ Celtannia Atlantic Aida : Very pretty compact little lady. Well balanced throughout with lovely head and correctly set ears, nice mouth, level topline and good tailset. Moved well intermittently! It was her personality that won her BPB and BPIB.

2. Charleton’s Janeyjimjams Jam Tart : Another well schooled pup. She knows how to show herself, just needs to perfect it; but that’s going to come with experience! Square outline, good front and rear angulation, being critical, I would like a tad more neck. Moved out well for a minor pup.

3. Davies’s Janeyjimjams Jam Puff

PB (6)

1. Howell’s Abiqua Wild Piannisima : Well constructed pup who demonstrated this by her lovely flowing movement. Feminine head with excellent pigmentation and dark eye. Scissor bite with good sized teeth. Good lay of shoulder, level topline and correctly angulated hind quarters and well set tail. Soft pale coat, although evidence of colour developing could be seen.

2. Shrive’s Emalot Sweet Child O’ Mine : a pretty young lady who should have a bright future. Good head with dark eye, good pigmentation and good mouth. Nice overall balance, just not moving as freely as 1.

3. Janeyjimjams Jam Tart

JB (1)

1. Herbert’s Julibidd Maybe I’m Amazed : Good for size, nice proportions and well balanced free mover. Pretty feminine head, but with rather too much grey at present, should clear with maturity.

GB (1)

1. Tempesta’s Kinaelan Finlandia Gracie (ai) Sweet girl. Lovely flowing coat falling in waves. Moved okay. (Sorry, I have retrieved what I could, but the handwriting in my notebook for this exhibit was practically indecipherable!)

PGB (6 – 1 a.)

1. Satherley & Meister & Brooks’ Silkcroft Some Magic Rose : Well presented girl whose handler got the most out of her. Lovely shape, feminine head, good shoulder placement, short level back with good rear angulation. Pale coat of good length to allow it to fall in soft waves. Moved out well to secure this place and the RCC.

2. Macgregor’s Kirktonhill What I believe : Smaller than 1 but her movement not as positive today, which cost her the placing. Well made with feminine head and possessing all the required breed points. Compact - good straight front and level topline with well sprung ribs and good body, nicely angulated hindquarters. Coat soft and wavy as required and a pretty colour.

3. Mann’s Janeyjimjams Jubilee Line

LB (8 – 1 a.)

1. Satherley’s Silkcroft Auroras Encore JW : Petite. Nice outline with pretty head, very feminine. Good front and hindquarters with level topline; excellent tailset. Moved well to take this placing.

2. Jefferies’s Frontline Simply Beautiful : Size larger, very smart, well proportioned and expertly handled to get the best out of her. Showed herself well with head erect and arched neck. Great topline and tailset. Lovely coat that was falling in curls and flowing nicely as she moved around the ring.

3. Lui’s Thistlebe Them There Eyes At Eblanahalls Sh.CM

OB (13 – 4 a.)

1. Moran’s Abiqua Wild She’s by Design : A compact, honest bitch, nothing flashy; she just gets on with her job and her movement is almost perfection as she flows around the ring. Beautifully presented. Great conformation throughout, feminine head with excellent mouth, pigmentation, nice earset and elegant neck into well laid shoulders. Straight front, level topline, well set tail and well angulated rear quarters. Coat pale, and my preference would be for a shade darker, but it is soft and silky to touch. CC & BOS

2. Hanna’s Swed Dan Norw Ir Ch Celannia Extra Confident at Kinaelan : A girl I have admired from the ringside, and she does not disappoint when handled. Shown in great condition, similar comments to 1 apply. A great size, she is feminine with good conformation and excellent breed points in terms of pigmentation and mouth. Her coat still to mature, but is soft and silky. Moved well and the decision could have gone either way, but the overall balance and maturity of 1 swayed me in her direction.

3. Moles & Williams’ Celtannia Extra Chic
