SOFT COATED WHEATEN DRIFFIELD 11 Judge: Ms Jo Dowdy SOFT COATED WHEATEN JUDGE DRIFFIELD 11 Firstly I would like to thank the committee of Driffield Agricultural Society for inviting me to award my first set of CC s and also for their kindness and hospitality during the day. Secondly I would like to thank my very efficient ring stewards, Bill & Wayne, for their assistance and good humour, this was very much appreciated and enabled me to complete my judging in a timely manner which was important to me as it was an unusually hot day, for the time of year, and I was concerned for the comfort of the dogs. I would also like to thank the exhibitors for giving me such a fabulous entry and the sporting manner in which my decisions were accepted. I felt that those entered represented a good cross section of the breed and would therefore like to make a few observations. In my opinion it is still difficult to find an exhibit that has good movement both fore & aft with many either out at elbow or close behind, I also noted that many are now very restricted in their front extension, as the breed should move with reach and drive it would be nice to see an improvement in this area. On a positive note I would say that bites in general were fairly good with no under/over shot mouths, although there are few that have large teeth as called for by the standard, and dropped front teeth still continue to be problematic. Presentation over the last few years has become more uniformed and I noted many beautiful coats today with the incorrect white and/or woolly coats, on the mature wheaten, definitely in the minority. Temperaments were excellent, with the true wheaten character and their zest for life shining through. MPD (2) Both these puppies moved out very well for their young age. 1. Howes' Daisymaes Desmond Decker, only 6m and very nice for size & presents a very balanced outline. Head of correct proportions with good bite, dark expressive eye. Short-coupled body with deep chest for age. Coat of good clear wheaten colour. Will watch him mature with interest. 2. Fletcher's Kinaelan Cachinare 7 month s nice puppy that presents a pleasing outline with a strong level topline. Another with a good bite but longer in muzzle than 1, nicely angulated rear. PD (1) 1. Francis' Amaricy Buffalo Soldier. Sired by my dog CC winner & I was really impressed with this boy. 11m Stands naturally four square. Masculine head without coarseness, dark hazel eye & excellent bite. Good shoulder placement, level topline and well angulated rear. Beautiful soft coat already sporting a lovely wave. Unfortunately he played his handler up on the move but there were glimpses of a superb ground covering stride displaying reach & drive BPD. JD (5) 1. Fallon's Janeyjimjams Jenson. Lot s to like about this young dog. Good head proportions, neat ears, and excellent bite. Good length of neck & well angulated front & rear. I would personally prefer him shorter coupled but he moved out with reach & drive to win the class. Nice soft coat with desired wave. 2. Wright's Kariskiye Horrid Henry For Abbeymead. Nice masculine expression with good head proportions, good bite with dark eye. Lovely length of neck and good topline, tailset ok. I preferred his overall balance to 1 as he is shorter coupled but on the day preferred movement of class winner 3. Maleary's Saffini Teenage Sensation. YD (1) 1. Pascoe's Middlebury Shooting Star 16m & liked him very much, appealed for size and overall balance. Well bodied for age and short coupled. Very masculine head with dark hazel eye. Shoulders ok with enough neck and level topline. Displays strong rear movement. Coat of good colour with desired wave for age. PGD (7) 1. Satherley's Elkis Aquila Of Silkcroft (Imp) 15m so still a Junior. I have to say that for me he is top size but this said he is so well balanced and has many positive attributes. Very masculine head with dark eye and excellent bite, lovely expression. Strong topline with good depth of chest, tailset ok. Nicely angulated rear quarters. His movement won him the class as he covers the ground so well displaying both reach & drive. 2. Pascoe's Middlebury Shooting Star 3. Hart's Weatawaite Little Boy Blue. LD (5:2a) 1.Carter's Chloeanco Hunni Dream Sh CM Appeals to me for so many reasons. He presents a picture of overall balance. Strong & masculine head without coarseness in any way. Excellent bite, correct dark hazel eye and very good ear set, which he uses to advantage. Good length of neck & well placed shoulders. Good depth of chest and short coupled. Beautiful coat for colour, wave & texture. Loved his overall terrier expression. Moved out well in front & profile RCC 2. Johnson's Garsayno Gold Freeman. Another one that I like very much. Good head proportions, correct bite and large black nose. Very good shoulder placement & level topline. Slightly longer cast than class winner. Coat of good clear wheaten colour. Moved out very well. 3. Glew Wentloog Mozambique At Braelochyen OD (8:1a) 1. Naylor's Peteneira P ticularly Pete With Amaricy. A very strong class but this 6 year old could not be denied the CC proving that wheaten s are indeed a slow maturing breed & improve with age. I have never seen this dog look or move better than he did today. Masculine head with good bite & neat ears. He stands naturally four square and presents a picture of overall balance. Moderate length of neck with well laid back shoulders and a superb level topline that he retained so well on the move. Short coupled and well bodied with good depth of chest and correct spring of rib. Well-angulated rear and good tailset. Beautifully soft coat of good wheaten colour & correct wave. On the move he covered the ground effortlessly displaying reach and drive pleased to award him the CC, his 3rd congratulations. 2. Dunhill's Ch Fantasa Blonde Kaos. Much to admire about this boy, loved his head proportions, dark expressive eyes, and correct bite. Lovely reach of neck, level topline & good tailset. Although he is short coupled he did not have the overall balance of 1. Covers the ground well displaying reach & drive. 3. Evans-Barry Ir & Int Ch Hobel Joe O Brien. MPB (1) 1. Clarke's Calvenace Fat Bottomed Girl. A very happy young lady, 6m and already free stands herself beautifully. Very feminine head, good bite & correct dark hazel eye. Moderate length of neck and well placed shoulders. Short coupled with level topline. Well bodied for age moved out steadily. PB (3) 1. Connor's Fantasa Blonde Nell 10m. Good for size and well bodied. Excellent head proportions with dark eye and correct bite. Very attractive puppy coat for age, soft, silky & has correct colour & wave, but she does need a better trim to enhance her many attributes. In the class she was a little unsettled on the move & did just enough to win the class, but in the challenge for BP she had got her act together and excelled on the move. Pleased to award her BPB & BPIB 2. Revis Garsayno Gold Gemma. 12m. On first view thought she would be my class winner as she is good for size and presents a very neat outline. Moderate length of neck, topline ok & shorter coupled than 1, moved out steadily but seemed a little reserved today. 3.'Smith s Amaricy Don t Rock My Boat JB (5) 1. Wardle's Saffini Yours Truly 16m & so much to like about her, just as I would want her at this age. Feminine head with terrier expression, small neat ears, dark eye & good bite. Good for size and bone. Level topline & well-angulated rear. Super coat for softness & colour. Covers the ground well and very alert on the move. Had to give way to maturity in the challenge for top honours but I am sure her day will come. I really liked this youngster and will watch her progress with interest. 2. Watkin's Zaraslake Seraphina 13m Very nicely constructed. Good head proportions with dark eye & good bite. Excellent length of neck and level topline. Adequate rear angulation, covered the ground with efficient movement. Just out of puppy and unfortunately her coat is not her fortune at the moment, but typical for her age, being at the pale awkward phase, no doubt this will improve as she matures 3. Salisbury& Kehoe Killeshin Libaneire YB (3:2a) 1. Hammond & Evans' Calvenace Roogagh 18m half sister to 2 in JB and so very similar that many of the same comments apply. Another who is well constructed. Good head, eye & bite. Good body proportions and bend of stifle, again her coat is not her fortune at the moment but she has time on her side. Moved out well with confidence a happy showgirl. PGB (8:1a) 1. Barretts Saffini Truly Madly Deeply Litter sister to junior class winner and a size up all round but has much to admire. Loved her head properties and expression, lovely dark mischievous eye and correct bite. Moderate neck leading into well placed shoulder, level topline. Very well bodied for age, short coupled & chest to elbow. Moved out well enough to take the class but felt she was holding back a little today. Coat good for colour & texture. 2. Bennett's Fantasa Blonde Matilda I really liked the make and shape of this pretty bitch & overall she presents a balanced outline. Good head proportions, correct bite, good length of neck. Good angles front & rear. Was unfortunately playing her handler up today which made it difficult to assess her movement fully, but I saw enough, has promise. 3. Witheyman's Steefsgrace Dutch Kiss By Dascol LB (14:2a) My best class of the day for depth of quality and some close decisions to be made, a shame so many good bitches had to leave the ring without an award. 1 Withington s Fantasa Blonde Lilley. Overall very well balanced. Feminine head of correct proportions. Lovely flat skull. Large black nose, correct bite & dark hazel eye. Good reach of neck & well laid back shoulders. Well bodied with good bone. Deep chest, desired spring of ribs and short coupled. Nicely angulated rear. Expertly handled, she moved out with reach & drive. In the challenge she did not put a foot wrong. Pleased to award her the CC her 3rd & BOB much to the delight & of her young handler, congratulations. 2. Griffiths' Manawyddan Brigid. Overall a very honest moderate bitch and I admire her for this, nothing is overstated. Very pretty bitch with a lovely expression & good bite. Lovely for size, adequate length of neck, level topline & good depth of chest. Coat a little pale at present but beautiful wave & soft texture. Moved steadily & covered the ground with minimum effort RCC. Moran s Abiqua Wild In A Satin Sash. OB (10:1a) Close decision between 1 & 2. 1. Satherley's Tobamorrey Sitting Pretty At Silkcroft JW ShCM Loved her overall balance, type & style. Good head properties & correct bite. Good length of neck, level topline, tailset ok. Coat of deep wheaten colour with desired wave. Moved out well to win the class but could not match the movement & terrier enthusiasm of the LB winner in the challenge. 2. Howes' Daisymaes Arrabella. Really like the head and expression on this bitch. Good bite, correct eye colour & earset. Good length of neck, strong topline, short coupled & good tailset. Nicely angulated rear, which she uses to advantage on the move. Soft coat of clear colour but a little on the pale side at present. 3. Hanna s Ch & Ir Ch Kinaelan Quietly Confident GCB (2) 1.
