SOFT COATED WHEATEN JUDGE BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 18

My appreciation goes to the exemplary and remarkable committee for the very great honour of being invited to award my first set of CCs at this classic and friendly show. Attention to detail sets The National apart.
Thank you to the exhibitors for the quality entry to go over, for their patience and their typical Wheaten legendary sportsmanship.
The Breed Standard quite clearly calls for a natural, moderate, unexaggerated terrier with any over stylisation is to be penalised. Overall, presentation was generally skilled and correct. Exaggerated flashy over-styling such as shaved necks and pony manes, which is an athema by being untypical and ruins a correct natural outline, were minimal. Whilst some shading is acceptable, several beards are still very dark and detract from a true kindly Wheaten expression. Shortened upper arms are creeping in, meaning we are losing the true daisy cutting action, however rear movement has vastly improved. Fewer dropped teeth are in evidence but level bites are on the increase. The greatest disparities were in coat clarity, texture and ear size. Brindling seems to be on the increase as are hound ears which detract from true Wheaten expression. Breeders, please be aware.
The class of the day by a mile was my Veteran Bitch. These golden girls typify the SCWT, enduring longevity showing kids half their age how it’s done. I am absolutely delighted with my top spots. I understand my Best of Breed at 10 1/2 broke 2 breed records. Delighted to see her short listed in the Veteran Group.

Class 1564 MPD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 5253 MOLES, Mr B D & WILLIAMS Mr D W Celtannia Atlantic Gold
Lovely elegant 8 month puppy of good size straight out of the top drawer. Pleasing coat weight of good colour but with no suggestion of wave as yet, which could be due to possible blow drying. Good head qualities, flat skull, bite, correct eye colour, combined with lovely reach of neck, good lay of shoulder leading a level top line. Good set on and beautiful angulation created a very striking outline. Moved true fore and aft. Impressively handled by his young handler making this debut remarkable. Very strong ring presence. A very lovely puppy and one of the stars today. Unfortunately lost the challenge for BP due to exaggerated presentation. A dog of this quality doesn’t require excess stylising.

2nd: 5252 MCNEILLIS Mrs C R & Mr A J Celtannia Atlantic Star
8 month litter brother to 1 also making his debut. A promising youngster who I liked very much. Pleasing coat in both texture and rich wheaten colour. Beard darker than ideal for age but has time. Good dentition, kind eye, short coupled. Moving close behind today. A dear baby boy who with more ring craft training will have his day.

very differing in type but all quality dogs

1st: 5260 PATTERSON Mr G & Mrs C Snowmeadow Sauls Symphony To Gavleash
Lovely 14 month dog oozing type, free of exaggeration and of correct size. Strong head with typical expression. Excellent reach of neck running cleanly into a good lay of shoulder, good depth of brisket, well ribbed back and short coupled. Level topline which he held beautifully on the move, finished off with a perfect tail carriage and set on, of lovely low sweeping reach with excellent drive behind. Balanced, well boned, with a beautiful age-appropriate clear wheaten coat. Waves and curls developing nicely and full of promise. His coat quality was the deciding factor in the line-up. Well handled. Delighted to award his first CC. DCC

2nd: 5238 HANNA Mrs B Kinaelan Jixditti
15 month solid well made, mature, well-muscled Irish boy with potentially a stunning coat upon full maturity. Already profusely covered in beautiful silky waves which defied his age. So much to like about this dog. Slighter shorter in foreface added to his sense of strength. Excellent reach in neck, well bodied level topline, excellent tail carriage, shape and set on. Moved with reach and drive but width of chest caused him to move wide in front which detracted slightly from an otherwise lovely dog. Well handled. A future stallion for sure.

3rd: 5271 WARDLE Mr & Mrs I V & C J Denzilly He's Got The Look
Pleasing sized compact golden wheat boy of profuse coat. Small neat ears, Short backed, short coupled, level topline. Good rear angulation and set on though would prefer a tad more behind the tail. Not so assertive today in the line up

Class 1567 YD (3 Entries) Abs: 1

2 very pleasing dogs

1st: 5266 THOBURN Mr & Mrs A D & L Northridge Me And Tennessee
Pleasing upstanding typy balanced 2 yo dog, with a profuse coat of clear wheaten. Fully up to size. Excellent strong head but would prefer smaller ears. Lovely reach of neck, good depth of brisket, well ribbed, level topline, which excess coat detracted from when moving. Short coupled, easy mover with reach and drive. Best Special Yearling

2nd: 5241 JOHNSON Mr G & Mrs S Garsayno Gold Kipling Sh.CM
A lovely, honest unexaggerated terrier. Good sized in super fit condition. Excellent head qualities, though not quite the dentition or the length of neck as 1. Lovely coat with waves coming in nicely. Touching tail marred an otherwise balanced outline but set on was good. Short coupled and well angulated to produce plenty of drive. Moved out well.

Class 1568 PGD (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 5231 BARRETT Mrs S P & Mr N J Saffini Shining Star
Squarely balanced dog of good colour. 22 mths Good flat skull, strong head. Not as co-operative as he could be but he moved with grace. Well boned. Good depth of brisket, well sprung rib, short coupled. Ideally a tad more neck would complete the picture. Just not quite so positive in moving forward today.

Class 1569 LD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 5274 WILLIAMS Mrs S & Mr G Flaxela Living Legend Of Gwendonydd
Strong, well boned, masculine upstanding dog, fully up to size but with no hint of courseness 2.5 yrs. Clear, rich wheaten coat correctly put down. Strong head. Mouth ok. Good topline, good depth of brisket, well ribbed back and short couplings. Longer cast than 2 produced an easy reaching, effortless movement. Positive and dynamic move

2nd: 5272 WATKINS, Miss S & WATKINS Mrs C Zaraslake Lucky Seven
Delightful big personality, purposeful terrier enjoying his day out with his very skilled young handler. Compact, beautifully balanced dog of pleasing size. Excellent body, couplings with a strong back, loin and croup contributing to an excellent topline, with tail bang on top which distractively touched on moving. Blessed with a beautiful coat of the most luscious hue of ripening wheat with waves developing nicely with sheen and lustre. Beautifully presented. Would prefer smaller ears to complete the picture. Finer in type to 1 but elegantly masculine and workmanlike. Coat transitioning beautifully for a young dog. Just missed out on front movement. A very useful dog.

Class 1570 OD (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 5235 DOWDY, Ms J I & DOWDY Mr G J Ch Greentree Gold Mombo To Denzilly (Imp)
An elegant upstanding male of presence, oozing confidence. Showing the other bucks how it’s done. Perfectly balanced. He ticks almost every box. He has all the attributes you look for in a great Champion moving with panache. For me, a raised tail carriage would have completed an otherwise perfectly balanced outline. His progeny won BPD and BPB with his stamp clearly in evidence. As a young dog, he just lost out on taking the CC today due to a transitioning coat. Perfectly and sympathetically handled. A lovely dog.

2nd: 5254 MOLES, Mr B D & WILLIAMS Mr D W Celtannia Extra Suave
Powerful, upstanding, quality masculine dog of pleasing type. Well boned, strong head in excellent body and well constructed throughout. Perfectly balanced. Super reach and drive. A game and spirited true stallion. Not quite the elegance of 1. Well handled and beautifully presented.

3rd: 5267 THOBURN Mr & Mrs A D & L Northridge Gotan Go
A lovely quality dog of type, superb beautiful coat, colour and balance. However, his sluggishness cost him a higher placing today. Profusion of coat distracted rather than enhanced his outline denying the lovely dog underneath. Clearest beard colour in the class.

Pretty ultra feminine quality baby, full of puppy attitude. Rich wheaten colour, strongly pigmented. Balanced throughout. Good bite, kind eye, lovely set on and tail carriage. Moved well. Enjoying her day out. Scored in presentation which decided BP

Class 1573 PB (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 5248 MACGREGOR Mrs D Kirktonhill What It's Not
Pretty, very feminine puppy of golden hue. Beautiful coat for age, developing nicely of pleasing weight and texture. Good size, being lighter in bone and finer in type enhanced her femininity. Scissor dentition, moderate reach of neck, good spring of rib.

Class 1574 JB (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 5257 MUNN Mr & Mrs S Snowmeadow Suzy Sixpence
Top notch lovely typy quality youngster of pale wheat wearing her Sunday best. A lush profusion of stunning curls and waves. Advanced coat for age. Good teeth, lovely balanced head. Moderate neck, good body, well ribbed, short coupled, level topline, excellent set on and tail carriage. Lovely flowing movement. One of the best coats of the day.

2nd: 5248 MACGREGOR Mrs D Kirktonhill What It's Not

3rd: 5273 WATKINS, Miss S & WATKINS Mrs C Zaraslake Tinie Tempah
Pretty coated bitch of ripening wheat, good set on and tail carriage. Shorter upper arm meant not the reach of 1 Handled well.

Class 1575 YB (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 5250 MALEARY Mrs J & Mr P Skuffy It Must Be Love
First time out for this glamorous showgirl. Quality feminine and full of elegance. Lovely coat of pleasing colour. Well angulated, moved purposely fore and aft. Good bite. Would prefer slightly higher set on. She was a little overwhelmed in the noisy hall but moved well when settled.

Class 1576 PGB (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 5265 TEMPESTA Mr J & Mrs H Kinaelan Finlandia Grace (ai)
A challenging class between two bitches who clearly illustrate breed diversity and type. Much to like about this bitch. Beautiful coated, silky Irish girl. Fully up to size. Excellent pigmentation. Excellent reach of neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Good depth of brisket. Her length of body detracted from her attributes but was forgiven on this occasion for being long cast.

2nd: 5249 MACGREGOR Mrs D Kirktonhill What I Believe Sh.CM
Excellent sized and pleasing coloured bitch. Kind eye and feminine expression. Pretty coat colour and texture with rippling waves. Short coupled. Rising over her loins caused her to lose topline. Moderately angulated. Well handled

Class 1577 LB (5 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 5264 SHRIVE Mrs E M Emalot Santa Maria
I judged this typy bitch as a baby pup upon her debut. Delighted to see she has matured into a lovely quality bitch with gorgeous waves and curls as I anticipated. Good pigmentation, strong head, elegant neck, good lay of shoulder, good topline, set on and carriage. Well angulated with reach and drive. A glamourous girl carrying excess weight today which made her lethargic on the move but she couldn’t be denied her quality and type.

2nd: 5251 MALEARY Mrs J & Mr P Wheaten Rebel's Them There Eyes
Balanced quality bitch of pleasing colour. Not quite the curls of 1 but plenty of lush waves. Well pigmented, mouth ok. Held her topline well with good set on and carriage, A sound terrier.

3rd: 5244 JONES, Mr R & Mrs L T & JONES Miss L R Saffini Suga Pie Honey Bunch
Perfect sized bitch. Lovely soft coat of a beautiful rich wheaten colour. Compact, well sprung body, short coupled. Not quite so good in topline today as she was throwing shapes. Not handled to her best advantage.

Class 1578 OB (8 Entries) Abs: 2

A very strongly contested class of 6 quality bitches. On another day any one of these could exchange places. A pleasure to go over every exhibit

1st: 5258 MUNN Mr & Mrs S Snowmeadow Peggy Phurrari JW Sh.CM
Quality feminine bitch who scored in type. Superb, if not profuse, coat with an abundance of tumbling large open curls and waves of lovely colour which would be enhanced if presented with a stronger outline. Lovely low effortless daisy cutting action created by excellent front assembly and tight front. Beautiful head. Good depth of brisket, good spring of rib, short coupled, strong topline with excellent connecting well angulated quarters producing drive to complete the picture. Well boned. The best curls of the day.

2nd: 5237 GALE Mrs S & Mr P Flaxela Drop Dead Gorgeous JW
2 ½ year old quality young bitch. Lovely, elegant and ultra feminine. Beautifully constructed and balanced throughout. Excellent topline and set on, presenting a strong balanced outline. Good pigmentation reflected in a darker beard than I like. Just missed out of advancing further due to dark shadowing on the back of the neck which may well clear with time but had to be a consideration today. Immaculately presented and handled to show this pretty girl off to her very best.

3rd: 5239 HANNA Mrs B Norw Dan Swed Ir Ch Celtannia Extra Confident At K
Free standing, beautiful Irish girl with a lustrous, exquisite silky coat in superb condition. Well muscled, well bodied, a quality girl of differing type but most deserving of her placing in a very strong class. Skilfully handled to show off her best assets.

Class 1579 VB (3 Entries) Abs: 1

Saving the best till last in the best class of the day. This dynamic duo showed the youngsters how it’s done. This class proves the SCWT endures and improves with age. These golden girls are a credit to their owners and breeders.

1st: 5269 TILLEY Mrs C A Starzak Solid Gold Ez Action JW Sh.CM
10.5 years old. Quite simply a beautiful bitch, living up to her name. Fit for purpose and ready for action, dressed in her finest gown. Excelled in type, balance, coat and construction, totally free of any exaggeration. However, it was her gameness, spirited demeanour and sparkling personality matching her quality that swept her through the challenge where I unhesitatingly declared her to be my Best of Breed. Totally up on her toes, with more vigour, attitude and energy than even the youngsters. Her maturity only enhances her ring presence. Graceful, easy daisy cutting action completes a lovely picture. Honoured to award her 3rd CC and crown the true champion she is. Judging by the ring response, a popular decision. Pleased to see her shortlisted in the Veteran Group deserving of the great breed ambassador she is. I understand this puts her into the record books. A Super Star!

2nd: 5275 WILLIAMS Mrs S & Mr G Ch Brynhir Rochelle Lil Rock
10 years old. A real go-getter. Tore around the ring as if she owned it. Her movement was absolutely outstanding with reach and drive second to none and perfect tail carriage. Fully up to size, happy outgoing attitude, also up on her toes and ready for action. Coat oozes enduring quality for colour, wave, curls and correct presentation also in sparkling condition. RBCC
