BEDLINGTON JUDGE WELSH KC 17
BEDLINGTON TERRIERS
Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge Bedlington Terriers and for the wonderful Welsh hospitality, a very enjoyable day & a great show over the 3 days, that ran very well. Many thanks to all the exhibitors for spending their hard earned cash on entries in the breed classes, much appreciated, for this difficult to get to location. Judging was inside the halls, due to a heavy rainfall & as the breed were not scheduled first in the ring, it involved a little waiting around. I would have much preferred to judge the dogs outside, as I always find that the dogs do not, look, move or perform at their best on these cold concrete floors. The entry of bedlingtons was pretty decent in todays climate . I found No cracked pads, decent dentition, the majority fit for function & also enjoying their day. Coats were not as good as expected & movement in general is a concern throughout the breed, very few show the typical Bedlington gait. Some moving well behind, others going well in front , others look good in profile, however, not all 3 together, something we must strive to achieve. However, that said I had some great quality in a relatively small entry & it was pleasing to see some tidy youngsters coming through. We must all encourage ‘new’ exhibitors in our hobby & give them the encouragement to continue.
Veteran Dog (4,1)
1. Cummings, Ch Honeymist Blue Flame at Rocabec. One I have previously judged & last time rewarded him highly. At 11 years of age he can still put on a performance. Balanced dog of good length. Pleasing head, long & lean, dark eye & nice ears. Lovely length of neck, which carried the head proudly on the move. Well bodied & good bone. Deep in chest, strong loin with correct arch. In decent jacket, rather stained but this was only a visual distraction. Moved with purpose, covering the ground with ease. Best Veteran.
2. McNallys, Makems Caught in the Act. 7 year old of good type. Put down in great condition, with good muscletone & colourful jacket of the correct texture, with thick furnishings. Strong in head, dark eye & fine correctly shaped ears. Well bodied throughout & with excellent bone. Balanced with good depth of chest. Angled well throughout. Steady on his feet & moved with purpose around the ring, true both ways.
3. Jones, Ch Pengerrig Iron Duke Shcm.
Puppy Dog (2)
1. Baldwins, Wollytop Golden Surprise. 8 month. Tidy youngster, good for type & excellent in profile. Pleasing in head, clear eye, good bite & decent ears. Good length of neck leading into clean shoulders. Ample depth & good through body. Tidy arch over loin & good tailset. Well angled rear. Kept profile very well on the move, covering the ground with precision. Sporting a plush liver puppy coat. To be critical would prefer more ‘Masculine’ substance.
2. Middlebrooks, Tcheria Tcharleston. 8mth blue. This youngster was very reluctant to play the game today for his handler & it was difficult to assess on the move. Hopefully additional ringcraft will get the two in unison. That said, the boy was of good type, clean head, dark eye & good ears. Longer cast than the winner & well off for bone & substance.
Junior Dog (5,1)
1. McCourts, Bisbee Super Trooper. This young man just pipped this decent class of youngsters. Scored highly for overall size & balance. Nothing exaggerated. Sporting a good jacket. Pleasing head, eye & ears. Ample neck leading into good clean shoulders & front. Ok for bone throughout. Ample depth of chest, decent angulation front & back, good tailset. Covered the ground well, true both ways & working well with his handler.
2. Martins & Strutts, Poppyblu Sirius. Upto size young man but lovely to go over. Great for type. Excellent head, with good foreface, dark eye & good bite. Ample neck leading into well placed shoulders & correct front. Good depth of chest, well bodied, ample bone throughout, standing on tidy hares feet. The handler didn’t get the best out of him on the move, with head dropping to the floor & moving sluggishly, which cost him 1st place.
3. Baldwins, Woolytop Golden Surprise.
Post Grad Dog (1)
1. Martins & Strutts, Poppyblu Sirius. Handler & dog got their act together in this class & moved great, covering the ground & moving true both ways.
Open Dog (6)
1. Davies, Ch Honeymist Blue Bols. 2 year old. Best mover in the class. Kept his topline & covered the ground well. Good in head, long & lean. Dark eye, good ears & clean bite. Good in neck, leading into clean shoulders & correct front. Good depth & flat ribs. Correct arch over strong loin, ok for bone & perfect tailset. Tidy hares feet. OK for jacket. Well presented & handled to perfection. CC.
2. Fletchers, Maevani One And Only. Liked this one as a youngster. Strong in head, long & narrow, good strong teeth, perfect scissor bite, thin filbert shaped ears & a sparkling dark eye. Balanced throughout, with good length to height ratio. Correct arch over a strong loin. Strong long tapering neck, flowing into clean shoulders. Chest deep & body lean, lithe & muscular. Lovely hare feet. Carried tail well. Well presented & put down in very hard condition. Not moving at his best today, but all other attributes clinched him his place. RCC.
3. McNallys, Conekesheved Ironstone Boy.
Puppy Bitch (5)
1. Cummings, Rocabec Gossip Girl. Oh wow, loved her. 6 month baby. So balanced throughout. Great head, with length, strong foreface, dark eye, tidy ears. Ample neck, good for bone, great depth of chest & strong through body. Lovely angulation throughout, from the tip of her nose to tip of tail. Correct arch over loin, great length of body, lovely tailset, good rear angulation. Clean hares feet. Moved very tidily, effortlessly covering the ground & true both ways. The one I would take home & I am sure she will he having some top notch fun with her owner in the future. BP & RCC.
2. Bambridges, Woolytop Bluebell Girl at Beckstone. Feminine 7 month youngster. Good overall shape, balance & type. OK in head, good depth of chest, correct rise over loin & well angulated throughout. Moved steadily throughout.
3. Cleavers, Jobanker Virtuous Veronica.
Junior Bitch (3,2)
1. Middlebrooks, Poppyblu Elara. 13 mth blue. Good for size, type, balance & overall profile. Pleasing head, dark eye, good bite & filbert ear. OK for bone throughout. Well angled front & rear. Decent depth of chest &length of body. Sporting a decent jacket. Correct arch over loin. Let herself down in movement, would prefer a little more effort , looked a little lethargic. Stood alone but a worthy winner.
Post Grad Bitch (2,1)
1. Mitchells, Miteymidgets Say Mama. Good for type with substance throughout. Good through head, dark eye & clean bite. Good through body, ample depth of chest & body. Sporting a great jacket. Moved ok,true all ways. Little on the nervous side today & didn’t shine.
Open Bitch
1. McNallys, Ch Conekesheved Kaldo Girl JW Shcm. One I have previously admired from the ringside. Nothing exaggerated on this young lady. A genuine type & balanced throughout. Hits top marks on the majority of breed points. Very pleasing to go over, feminine but with substance & ample bone. Lean narrow head with dark eye, clean bite & thin ears. Flowing neck leading in to typical front & lovely depth of chest. Good tuck up & arch over loin. Tidy hares feet. Sporting a well groomed, colourful jacket. With adequate muscletone. Moved out on her toes. Did enough to claim top spot in the challenge & performed well in the group. CC & BOB.
2. Garbutts, Aireview Xmas Star. Up to size but very typey. Lots to like her about her. Cracking head, long & narrow, good teeth & bite, dark sparking eye & thin, well shaped & positioned ears. Good neck & depth of chest. Forequarters straight & long pasterns. Adequate angulation at rear. Well bodied & in good muscular condition. Moved well in profile, keeping her shape.
