Driffield 10 Judge

BEDLINGTON DRIFFIELD 10 Judge: Mrs Shirley Davies BEDLINGTON JUDGE DRIFFIELD 10 Bedlington Terriers I would like to thank the exhibitors for the grace with which they accepted my decisions. This year we have seen breed points which are very important being ignored by many judges. Two honest breed specialist judges’ critiques have recently pointed out that flat toplines when moving are not correct in any Bedlington, it is wrong to describe moving with a flat back with “kept his/her topline” on the move. Another area of concern is incorrect movement being rewarded with high honours. How are newcomers to learn how to critically assess their own exhibits when they regularly see incorrect breed points being rewarded? Breed judges have a duty to the breed to maintain important breed points, but so also do judges from outside the breed. Flat or pointed backs, high points of the topline over the rump or chest, instead of over the loin, small heads, small teeth, prominent and/or rounded eyes, high hocks, upright shoulders & worst of all high set tails not carried gracefully down in a graceful scimitar shape are all examples of things which are greatly at odds with the Standard & if repeatedly overlooked are in danger of irrevocably changing this breed. I did not find any bad mouths or feet & there were no dirty teeth, but some did not have the required movement for a Bedlington. Some tails did not reach the hocks as they should & the proud high head carriage was thin on the ground. MPD (1) 1 Ames’ Sharnor Faithful Falcon, lovely head & expression, nice long neck, good coat & angulation. Chest needs to drop a little, but a nice puppy. In common with many of the dogs in the early classes his movement was affected by the very cold, very wet grass. PD (2,1a) 1 Cumming’s Rocabec Definitely Maybe, no ‘maybe’ about this boy, took my eye straight away, as near perfect an outline as I have seen for a long time, kept his correctly curved topline on the move, carried his tail low, in a graceful scimitar shaped curve, moved very well, good angulation, head & expression, good coat, he has it all in one so young, correct mouth with lovely big teeth. CC, BOB & BP. JD (1) 1 Fisher & Morris’ Gnejnabay Solo Starboy at Gipcyan, nice head & expression, nice long neck, good coat, deep enough chest. Would just prefer a less upright shoulder & more positive front movement. YD (1) 1 Baldwin’s Woolytop Zuks Hoolahan, lovely masculine head, nice ears & good long neck, good angulation, coat & colour, correct tail length reaching the hocks, a very nice dog. PGD (2,1) 1 Hall’s Palm Of The Desert, nice expression, good head, nice overall shape, deep chest, tail of correct length, coat colour & texture quite good. Would just prefer slightly bigger ears & less wide front movement. LD (4) 1 Walter & Mitchell’s Rathsrigg Millrace, very nice dog with nice head, correct length ears, nice neck, angulation OK, tail length correct, good coat colour, but would prefer a slightly firmer texture. Moving OK, but needs to tighten up slightly in front; 2 Baldwin’s Woolytop Another Star, nice masculine head & expression, nice outline, good angulation, good coat, correct tail length. Pushed 1 hard, but sadly he flattened his topline on the move; 3 Owen’s Bisbee Beachcomber. OD (3) 1 Walshaw’s Ch Janmark Blue Encounter, very nice dog with lovely angulation, nice long neck, nice ears, good depth of chest, nice coat texture & colour, movement OK. RCC; 2 Richardson’s Uptnorth Quicksilver, nice dog with good outline, good angulation, nice depth of chest, nice ears. Just not very happy moving; 3 Kiernan & Liu’s Ch Bisbee Boy Wonder. MPB (1) 1 Butler’s Yarbach Gorgeous Gabby, lovely pretty girl, but very much a baby puppy who gave her owner a hard time. Movement impossible to assess as she was doing dressage. Beautiful head & expression, nice angulation, good deep chest for her age, nice thin ears, tail the right length, surprisingly, despite her antics, kept her topline on the move quite well, look forward to seeing her progress. PB (2) 1 Ames’ Sharnor Emerald Electra, very nice puppy, nice low hocks, deep chest for age, nice neck & head carriage, nice expression, moving nicely, nice soft ears, correct tail length; 2 Fraser & Butler’s Sharnor Emerald Ice via Ycart, nice puppy with many of the good points of 1. Just preferred the movement & topline of 1. This pup falls away a little at the rear, both standing & moving. JB (3) 1 Walshaws’ Janmark Misty Horizons, would take this one home, the best drive from the rear in the bitches, very good movement, kept curve of topline, lovely strong head, nice feminine expression, nice length of neck, good depth of chest, good angulation, which shows in her good movement, good coat, one to watch. RCC; 2 Garbutt’s Airview Classic Print, very nice bitch to go over, nice coat, good angulation, shoulders, nice head & expression with good thin ears; 3 Baldwin’s Woolytop Snow Star. YB (1) 1 Horsewood’s Aireview Special Print, pleasant bitch with all the right attributes, nice head & expression, good depth of chest, good head carriage. PGB (1) 1 Hurley’s Fralex Culibre Truffles, nice head & expression, head carried high as it should be, good ears, good angulation, deep chest, kept topline moving, tail correct length & low set, very good liver coat, nice eyes. LB (3,1) 1 Owen’s Bisbee Belle Inni, one I really like which should do really well, has all the important breed points, complemented by a good coat & furnishings, lovely feminine head & expression, good topline & tuck-up, well balanced. Just seemed less positive in her movement & a little unsettled which sadly cost her the top awards; 2 Ames’ Sharnor Crystal Clear, nice deep chest, nice thin ears, good topline, nice head with feminine expression, a lot to like about this bitch. Just preferred the movement of 1. OB (4,2) 1 Hurley’s Fralex Culibre Sapphire, beautifully typical bitch, very good coat & coat colour, lovely head & expression, correct topline, nice long neck, correct ears, good angulation showing in her good movement with drive from the rear, good deep chest, correct tuck-up, close fit to the Standard. CC; 2 Welsh’s Wudrusjuk Work Of Art, very nice bitch who fits the Standard very well with good head & head carriage, neck, expression, angulation, coat etc. Just not moving her best. S DAVIES |
