WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE WELKS 17

West Highland White Terriers

Thank you to all the exhibitors who entered under me. I have had nothing in the ring since last July & have not been around the WHWT ring so it was a pleasure to judge not really knowing who was doing what or who the majority of the dogs were, I found it a delight to judge these dogs.

A few observations that I hope you will all take in good spirit in which it is intended.

Firstly the bitches especially are getting too big, we are a short legged terrier around 11 inches in height, compact & as short coupled to allow free movement, we tend to be moving away from this part of our standard & this seems to happen every few years or so, as the saying goes “Do not throw your babies out in the bath water” but be careful when choosing puppies & breeding lines, going to the dog who is winning at the time is not always the right thing to do look at the pedigrees & males who will complement your bitch.

Teeth are still on the small side but I only found a couple of mouths that were not quite correct, the breed on the whole are in good condition with most of the dogs sound honest dogs, although I found a lot that when moving away were tipping their hind pads in instead of me being able to see a pad from behind.

VD (2,1a)

1 Stock’s Lindenka Baxter, lovely 10 year old in excellent condition, beautiful head, good in neck & shoulder, moved out well. MPD (0). PD (1) 1 Owen’s Frisbeck Guitarman, 10 month old, a little loose in front yet to be expected, well balanced, good head, excellent coat, good in rib, moved well with tail on top, a happy boy.

JD (1)

1 Britten’s Krisma Jump Start, very aptly named, stunning was my first thought & I was not disappointed, he stood alone & shone. Very sound with the correct construction, super head, correct scissor bite, excellent layback of shoulder, being a typical 13 month old acting the clown at times but moves so freely when settled, pleased to award him the RCC he will go far.

YD (1) A.

PGD (1)

1 Bradbury’s Gelmoore Midwinter Magic at Fourastay, up to size 3 year old, good in head & shoulder, a lot behind but not happy on the move.

LD (4) 1 Lilley & Milling’s Lillmill Nosey Parker, I have liked this dog from being a puppy & was very pleased to find when I went over him that he was all I expected, my hands flowed when going over him, correct head & mouth, well laid shoulder into level topline, short tail, very well muscled including the second thigh, super coat texture, great movement very free fore & aft. Beautifully constructed dog. A very well deserved CC, I believe his third, an extremely worthy champion;

2 Gales’ Bocans Bot to Bellevue, great outline on this dog both standing & moving, up to size honest dog, well laid shoulder, good head, strong behind giving him free movement, shame to meet 1.

OD (4,1)

1 Noyce’s Aramadales Son Of A Gun at Maxula, another dog I like very much, & not performing for his handler as well as he can, good head, well placed shoulder, strong behind, lovely coat, well muscled with strong quarters, correct for size, compact & well balanced;

2 Carlin & Gillott’s Lizandycris Line Me Up, lovely masculine dog, up to size nevertheless a lovely dog to go over, very masculine head, good mouth, coat in good condition & well presented, everything in the right place, moving & showing well, shame to meet 1.

VB (0).

MPB (1)

1 Sweetzer’s Pryorvale Christmas Rose, just 6 months, a lovely puppy, lovely head, neat ears, well balanced for her age, good coat, & moved well, being a baby & not a robot.

PB (1)

1 Griffiths’ Karamynd May Queen, I really like this youngster, great construction, everything where it should be with no exaggerations, very feminine, lovely head & expression, correct mouth, good shoulder placement, correct quarters, moves freely when handler gives her a little more lead, she was pushing for the RCC.

JB (6)

1 Dale’s Evelyn All, what a lovely bitch she is, she caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring. Very compact, lovely shoulder placement into level topline, small tail bang on top, excellent quarters giving her drive, she moves so freely fore & aft, a real showgirl & happy to do it. Beautiful presentation as always from this kennel, delighted to award her the RCC, will watch her progress;

2 Foster’s Thowzow Edelweiss, another I have liked from ringside, a well put together bitch but poking her head a lot on the move, she is well constructed all over so no reason for this, her movement itself is good & as it should be but her outline on the move is not correct, maybe a rest would help as she did not look happy & I have seen her show very well before, she has a lovely head & good mouth, I hope she comes back to being the showy girl she was.

YB (1)

1 Burns’ Burneze Billy On Air, a beautiful bitch, well put together giving her the construction needed to move like a dream, I would prefer a little more substance, & unfortunately she was carrying a lot of coat colour making her miss out any higher honours.

PGB (5,3)

1 Gales’ Belevue Gossip Catcher, good head, mouth & neat ears, well put together, correct angulation, moving with ease, super coat, another top drawer bitch;

2 Harper’s Westigo Flirty Gertie, love the name. Correct head & mouth, well laid shoulder, correct angulation, good coat, moves well just not the oomph of 1.

LB (2)

1 Fox’s Hillstead Sweet Mystery, up to size but a lovely bitch to go over, good head, correct mouth, well boned & correct angulation, with great free movement, well ribbed & short coupled, liked her very much;

2 Minett’s Matherton Connex Again with Duskhunter, well balanced compact bitch, lovely in head but too much hair taken from the sides of the ears making her expression not as good as it should be, well made behind & well muscled moving freely fore & aft.

OB (6,2)

1 Squires’ The Dashing Devils Diva, being out of the ring for some time I had not seen this bitch, what a wonderful surprise, could not take my eyes off her, she has every quality that any breed specialist is looking for, & non breed specialist should be. For me this bitch is the epitome of what our breed should be, beautifully made all over nothing to pick apart, her construction is excellent all through, head has the correct bone structure, neat ears & correct mouth, shoulders & quarters are excellent making your hands flow when going over her, the movement on this bitch is second to none, have not seen movement like this for some time, she made her handler puff & pant a bit as she commanded the ring, I wish she was mine, so pleased to award her the CC & BOB, her third I found out later & she was pulled out in the group.
