WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE WELKS 12

WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIER

It is 27 years since I first awarded CC's in the breed, during that ensuing years I have had the privilege of judging most of the Specialities (Club Shows), in this country and indeed all over the world, including The World Show and The World Festival of Terriers. During that time the breed has seen changes, some positive & some negative. As always, there are a few top class exhibits, a few poor ones and a whole lot in between of varying quality. I wish the breed and it's devotees the best of luck and many happy times in the future. Show day itself was a damp, dismal & cold affair and with doors to the sheds open top & bottom, the cold wind rushed through making it perishingly cold for all concerned. My thanks to the exhibitors whose compliments to me were very warmly received. To Vanessa & June for setting up the ring and their expertise throughout. And to Sue Thomson & Sheila Jenkins for supplying a 'proper' judging table when the archaic, low level tressle table provided by the Show proved inadequate (perhaps the correct parlance is 'not fit for purpose'), prompting complaints from exhibitors. I thoroughly enjoyed judging the breed again and afterwards chatting with some old and some new friends.

MPD (6,1)

1 Jennings' Comdale Johnny Boy. Lots of quality, nicely balanced. Keen, masculine outlook with good head. Clean, well placed forehand, good rib, topline & set-on. Excellent coat & presentation. Sound & showy. My only concern is he's a big lad and up to size already. I think he is also overbodied and could lose a little to good effect. Should have a bright future. BPD.

2 Milner's Juanne Flamenco Finlay. Raw but with lots of quality to mature into an excellent specimen. Excellent balance & type, good head properties without being overdone, clean forehand & good quarters, excellent coat texture, sound & showy.

3 West's Tomlyndon Power Of Love.

PD (2)

1 Nayton's Pedrohay Roberto. Strong, balanced head, good straight front, could settle in shoulder to effect. Well presented as always. Good body & rib. Could reach out more.

2 Windram's Leonardo Ventura. Balanced head, good front, upright, well muscled, not the overall quality of a showdog & erratic.

PGD (5,2)

1 Pearson's Winoski Mr Chips ShCM. Good type & shape, good head & bite though teeth could be bigger. Excellent, well presented coat, good body & rib with strong quarters. Needs more 'go' but sound.

2 Anthony's Rozamie Dream On With Charmedautum. Nice to go over with good head, layback & topline. Good harsh coat & well muscled. Sound.

3 Stock's Lindenka Baxter.

LD (7,2)

1 West's Tomlyndon Spoilt Rotten. High quality with type & balance, he has all the essentials to go far. Very showy and an excellent mover.

2 Burns' Burneze Dizzee Rascal. Close up and another very good sort. Excellent head, neck and forehand, good body, topline, tail set & well muscled quarters. Not so free in movement. Should have a future.

3 Noyce's Maxula Name Of The Game.

OD (6,2)

1 Edmondson's Ch Pepabby Prank. The first time I awarded CC's in the breed I gave the double to a litter brother & sister handled by a young teenager I had never seen before, because of their quality, balance & type and so it was with this dog, from the same kennel, with the same handler. Good to see that this kennel has 'stuck to their guns' for all these years with what they breed and it continues to pay dividends, not only for themselves but for the benefit of the breed. Top quality with correct type & balance. Cracking head and all properties, strong neck, A1 front & overall forehand, strong topline with excellent tail set, strong well angulated quarters, well presented in harsh coat & excellent muscletone all through. Moved & showed fluently, covering the ground with ease. DCC & BOB and good to see he made the final cut in the Group.

2 Lewis' Ch Lynnsto Man About Town. Close up and a lovely sort of high quality make & shape. Immaculately presented in the upper half but massively overfurnished in the lower, which is untypical and detracts. Expertly handled he moved & showed so well. RDCC.

3 Griffiths' Karamynd Play It Again.

MPB (5,1)

1 Milner's Juanne Latin Lindi Louise. Sister to the 2nd in MPD and same quality, type & balance. Very promising with a lovely shape & outlook. Has the edge over her brother just now. Should come on with maturity. Moved & showed very well.

2 HooperYorsar Betsy Ross. Close up, very raw but with much to commend. Lovely profile, decent head properties, excellent forehand, compact with good topline & quarters. Sound & showy if a little too full of herself which is not a bad thing.

3 Bradbury's Petalam Positive Outcome.

PB (3,1)

1 Noyce's Maxula Box Of Tricks. My notes say "Top quality, ab fab, one to take home", and she is all that and more. A truly fine example of a West Highland White Terrier as set out in the Standard. She could and should have a very big future. But for that to happen she needs to be presented & handled to a high degree. I don't see her repeating this sort of success anytime soon, unless there are some knowledgeable judges out there with the independence of mind to sidestep the 'play safe' options. But in a year or so, given presentation & handling, she should take some stopping. She won the BCC here by some margin and BPIB to boot. Good luck.

2 Hayton's Pedrohay Silver Magnolia. Average sort, well presented, dull and not at all happy or settled.

JB (5)

1 Edmondson's Pepabby Pirouette. Same good sort from this kennel. Lovely, feminine expression, excellent front & forehand, between coats, good body & rib with depth, good quarters with muscletone, moved & showed. Should do well.

2 Thomson's Hillcloud Athena At Ashgate. Close up, lovely shape & balance, decent head with good bite, clean transition through neck & shoulder to level topline with good set on, well presented in good form, sound & showy.

3 Harper's Westigo Sheeza Delight.

PGB (10,4)

1 Burns' Burneze Plan Bea. Very nice typy sort, a little full bodied, lovely head & expression, strong neck and A1 forehand, deep well filled ribbing with a strong topline & set on, well defined quarters, immaculately presented in harsh coat, moved & showed with spirit.

2 Windram's Cochansa Dales Pride. Very good type & quality, cobby with good head & forehand, needs to fill in rib a little, good topline, harsh coat, sound & showy.

3 Sweetzer's Bellevue Wild At Heart.

LB (6,2)

1 Thomson's Ashgate Moonsie. Typical of the kennel, feminine, lovely profile, short coupled, clean forehand, good neck & topline, well ribbed with decent quarters, in good form, moved soundly.

2 Carlin & Gillott's Lizandycris Aint She Grand. Very close up, just preferred layback of winner, good balance all through, nicely headed with a straight front, well ribbed with a good body & topline, quarters with good toning and very well presented in good order of correct coat texture & muscling. Moved & showed with spirit.

3 Mealing's Reifrandies Mingay.

OB (5,1)

1 Smith's Ch Faymar Fine Romance. The owner and I started in this breed around the same time and it occurred to me how fortune falls randomly. Between 1978-2000 I had the good fortune take make up 16 Champions winning around 100 CC's. Alas, despite her dedication, this was not so of the Faymars. So I was thrilled to see that dedication has finally paid off after all these years with this first Champion: She presents a lovely profile of quality & balance and has undoubted qualities. Strong muzzle with good bite & teeth, not the best of skulls, excellent straight front, shoulder placement & good length of neck, short coupled with a flexible loin, good body & rib, good quarters which could be further enhanced by a firmer second thigh, good coat & presentation. Sound & showy, she did just enough to warrant the class & RBCC.

2 Griffiths' Karamynd Make A Splash. Compact with a good shape. Decent head, excellent forehand, well ribbed with level topline and decent quarters. Excellent coat texture. Sound & showy. She is a little short on the leg and this coupled with her carrying too much body for her frame and longer than necessary furnishings, makes her look stuffy and even lower to the ground.

3 Lilley & Milling's Lilmill Giv Me Your Answer Do.
