WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE SCOTTISH BREEDS 13

West Highland White Terriers

I would like to point out a few things that bothered me & I know my entry doesn’t speak for the whole breed across the UK but our heads have become plainer & I think it has been said before.

Another thing that bothered me was front assemblies. They are becoming straighter through the shoulder & upper arm, hence restricting front reach. In some cases contributing to sloping toplines, or if there is length to the back & the assembly is placed too far forward they can cause a weakness on the topline when they move. If the assembly is too far forward & straight we get cathedral fronts (nothing between their front legs). I know there is no such thing as a perfect dog but the front faults in our breed are numerous.

Thirdly hygiene, I said it the last time I judged & I will say it again. Some dogs were filthy, if you don’t want to clean your dogs don’t bring them to a beauty contest. After some classes my hands were black. I was embarrassed to have to ask for wipes after some classes & when a fellow judge commented on the West Highland Black’s, sadly I couldn’t defend my breed.

VD (2)

1 Loughlin’s Ley-Hey Living Ledgend, an 8 years male with pleasing head & expression, mouth just holding, good shoulder, level topline, good tailset, moved with enthusiasm holding his shape well on the move, double coat of good texture;

2 Taylor & Metcalfe’s Birkfell Second Chance, another 8 years male with an acceptable head & expression, good mouth. Clean neck & shoulder though not as well laid as 1. Good rear, tailset & carriage. Correct coat texture but lacking undercoat. This boy didn’t want to cooperate with his handler on the move.

MPD (3)

1 Pearson’s Winoski Man Friday, strong young male with plenty of bone & substance, just 8 months & enjoyed his day. Strong head but a little plain. Good eye & ear, correct mouth. Shoulder good though a little heavy & the owner needs to watch the weight. Level topline, good tailset & carriage, nicely angulated rear that he used well on the move, nice to see him free standing. BP;

2 Smith’s Zicco Vicki Vertragus Faymar, another of a similar age, at first impression he was my class winner & in outline reminded me of his grandsire (Ch Havasu Pai). Pleasing head & expression with correct eye & ear, pleasing stop & correct mouth, clean neck & shoulder running into a short level topline with good tailset. Front assembly not as well angled as winner but much cleaner. Nice bone & substance for his age, correct double coat in good order. Sadly this boy didn’t want to be in the ring & didn’t show himself off to his best advantage. I’m sure in time this boy will become more settled mentally & it may make a difference to his show placings;

3 Bartley’s Yushama Shooting Star.

1 Strand’s Crinan Code Name Westlake, very interesting young male, I think the youngest in the class. On first impression he is a little long in rib though still short coupled & looking still raw however his quality shone through. Good strong head with dark eye, excellent mouth with good sized teeth, good ear placement & carriage, clean neck & shoulder running into level topline ending at a good tailset & carriage, moved correctly front & back with enthusiasm & full of self esteem, this shortened him up greatly when moving. Has correct double coat though not in the best of order just now & with time both his coat & show career should improve. One for the future;

2 Squire’s Kimgarwyn Defender, another young dog who on first glance I thought was going to please me. A stylish male in good order despite a little colour in his coat he was smart. Free-standing & alert, head pleasing, dark eye, nice neat ear. Mouth just holding which is worrying in one so young. Good reach of neck, clean shoulder, level topline, great tailset & carriage, moved like a pro in all aspects – front, back & side profile;

3 Purchon’s Lindenka Donovan.

PGD (6)

1 Windram’s Louie Conquistador, not an eyecatching dog but an honest one, pleasing head & expression. His eye, ear & mouth are all OK. Topline & tailset good. Coat is of correct texture though not the whitest. Pleasing to go over & moved & showed well. I think better presentation may make this boy more pleasing to the eye;

2 Pearson’s Winoski Mr Chips, on first glance I thought this boy was going to be my class winner in stance but another that didn’t seem too happy. Pleasing head & expression with a correct mouth, good reach of neck, level topline. Good tailset though didn’t carry it well. Front assembly balanced his rear, well presented;

3 Ladhams & Rudd’s Jura Spirit Caimbeul.

LD (3)

1 Storey’s Nossimp Written In The Stars, masculine male, eyecatching upon entering. Pleasing to go over & watch moving, nice head & expression, dark eye, good ear placement & carriage that indicated alertness, correct mouth, good reach of neck running into a strong level topline, excellent tailset & carriage, moved with ease in all aspects, holding his shape & indicating that he was the top male in this class. RCC;

2 Taylor & Metcalf’s Flassendale Fairlie, I have liked this dog from the ringside as a youngster when handled by one of his owners the late Jennifer Taylor. Here I was not disappointed when going over him, he is balanced from nose to tail (balance without exaggeration), a pleasing head & expression with a good mouth, correctly set on a clean neck & shoulder, level topline & good tailset. This boy moved effortlessly in front & behind, watching him move in side profile was a pleasure. A topline that was level to the ground, a front that reached & a rear that drove. Correct coats & of correct texture that in time with his present handler/groomer will no doubt get him to the top. Sadly his tail carriage & finish let him down;

3 Jenkins’ Highcross Willie Be Charmed.

OD (5) Another interesting class of different types but I have to say there was quality.

1 Edmondson’s Ch Pepabby Prank, I went over this dog about 2 years before & commented how honest he was & apart from his coat there was nothing to dislike. Well I stand corrected, his coat has improved immensely! He is a masculine dog, has a strong head with correct expression, dark eye, neat ear & square punishing bite, good reach of neck coming from clean well placed shoulders, strong level topline & a great tailset & carriage with plenty of bum behind it, in correct double coat, movement was excellent moving freely with reach & drive. I was delighted to see that he didn’t dig his heels in like he did at Crufts. He couldn’t be denied CC. Later in the day I was delighted to see him win the ch stakes under Frank Kane;

2 West’s Tomlyndon Spoilt Rotten, a smaller dog but by no means less masculine. Cobby male, good head & correct bite, dark eye & neat ear, strong neck & topline, great tailset & carriage, good front assembly & rear culminating in a strong powerful movement. I can honestly say I haven’t paid much attention to this dog before & was pleasantly surprised on closer inspection. Correct coat texture though he lacked a little bit of finishing style.

VB (1)

1 Windram’s Cassara Princess, 9 years bitch in good double coat of correct texture. Pleasing head, nice to go over but every bit an OAP, pigment wasn’t so good. Moved well.

MPB (2)

1 Hunt’s Kellethrig Lucky Charm, feminine bitch, pleasing head & expression, clean neck & shoulder, level topline with good tailset & carriage, good coat & texture. Reluctant to move, I just saw enough to warrant a placing;

2 Pearson’s Winoski Willow, stronger bitch than 1. Slightly plainer in head. Dark eye & neat ear. Seemed nice to go over but couldn’t assess movement properly due to her unwillingness.

PB (3)

1 Jenkinson’s Highcross Charmer, another feminine baby, very showy, pleasing head & expression with a good mouth. Shoulder clean though a little straight in upper arm. Strong topline & good tailset. Front movement a little high but true. Drove well from behind, in good coat;

2 Tullis’ Drumsheugh Jewel Of The Nile, in stance stylish but a little rangy. Pleasing head & expression, good mouth, clean neck & shoulder, level topline, good tailset, coat texture good. Sadly not sound here but saw quality in this bitch;

3 Ladhams & Rudd’s Juraspirit Jasmine.

JB (3)

1 Morton’s Brychdyn Carrie On Swifdon, beautifully presented bitch of quality, in correct coat, lovely head & expression with a correct bite, dark eye & neat ear, good reach of neck, short level topline, great tailset & carriage that never flagged once, nice feminine bitch holding her shape all the time. In time should do really well for her owner & breeders. I thought after judging her it was going to take something nice to beat her at ticket time;

2 Lancaster’s Clanstar Cloud Chaser, taller bitch than 1, but equally a quality bitch. Nice head & expression, good mouth, good reach of neck, clean shoulder. Level topline though she seemed a little slack on the move, I suspect it will strengthen in time. Good tail carriage & tailset, moved well front & rear, in lovely coat;

3 McLoughlin’s LLovall Look Here Ley-hey.

NB (1)

1 Hands’ Crinan Calista, a nice bitch to go over but far too heavy. At first glance I forgave her mass because it was novice class but finding a quality bitch underneath I was saddened for the bitch. Nice feminine head & expression, correct bite, good reach of neck stemming from a very nicely constructed shoulder & front assembly, level topline, good tailset & carriage. Sadly her weight didn’t help her front movement, while true it was wide & cumbersome. Rear movement was good, coat in good order. I’d like to see this bitch again with a quarter of her mass gone.

PGB (9)

1 Dunne’s Hillcloud Ice Flake, not the most cooperative of ladies. A pretty & ultra feminine bitch with spirit, pleasing head & expression with a good mouth, nicely balanced, moved so fast I almost missed her though holding her shape well, moved true in front, & rear & side profile. I think this will be another bitch that will improve with maturity. In good coat & condition;

2 Squires’ Kimgarwyn Miss Molly, very similar to her kennelmate. Very stylish & oozing quality. Sadly not in the best of condition. Nice feminine head & expression, eye & ear & mouth all good, good reach of neck. Topline was level in stance but she lengthened & was a little slack when moving. Good tailset & carriage. Coat was good but in some she was lacking top coat. Moved soundly both front & back. I actually liked this bitch;

3 Wilson’s Gairich First Addition.

LB (8)

1 Smith’s Lingback Leading Lady, a pleasing bitch who with a little more attention could surprise a few people. A good honest bitch. Hard in body though carrying a little too much weight. Strong head, dark eye, neat ear, good mouth, good reach of neck, level topline, with one of the harshest coats on the day, good tailset & carriage, nice clean front with enough return of upper arm thus enabling nice free front movement, a strong rear that worked well;

2 Burns’ Burneze Plan Bea, at first glance this bitch jumps out at you, her presentation & balance is lovely. Head is pleasing, dark eye, neat ear & a good mouth, good neck. Strong topline though running down to the tail on the move. Good tailset on powerful rearquarters, showed & handled well;

3 Edmondson’s Pepabby Pirouette.

OB (6)

Not an easy class to split.

1 Fox’s Comdale Miss January at Hillsted, beautiful feminine bitch that told the breed & her CC winning sire to move over on the day. Feminine head & expression, dark eye & neat ear that was taking all in, beautiful reach of neck, level topline with a good tailset & carriage. This bitch out moved everything in the ring front & rear was true, & side profile. I could have watched her all day. If it moves right it’s built right. I hope CC number 3 comes soon. CC & BOB;

2 Lehtonen & Hotanen’s Int/Fin/Swe/Est Ch Who’s Hot And Who’s Cold, at first glance this bitch lacked a little bit of the finish of the winner but boy did she cause me a problem. On the table I found nothing to dislike about her construction. Has feminine head & expression, dark eye, neat ear & correct mouth, clean well proportioned neck, short level topline & tailset, front assembly in hand is beautiful to feel, possesses a lay of shoulder & return of upper arm that our breed lacks & she has a rear to compliment. I’m sorry I hadn’t got another CC to give as this girl would have had it. Her coat is not as finished as the winner but still in excellent coat, at times I found her to be a little sluggish & later found out it was an import bitch with a new handler so I think the bonding between handler & dog needs worked on. She’s worth a watching. RCC;

3 Smith’s Ch Faymar Fine Romance.
