WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE SKC 17

West Highland White Terriers

My thanks to SKC for the invitation to judge the breed in the land of its birth. My appreciation & thanks also to the exhibitors, many of which had travelled considerable distances. My two stewards, Marion & Fred, were so efficient as to be almost invisible. Stewards are invaluable to the smooth running of the ring & mean the judge can concentrate on the task of judging the dogs

Although an entry of this size cannot be considered representative of the breed I am pleased to say that all dogs exhibited were to my eye healthy & showing nothing I would consider detrimental to their wellbeing. In the males I was happy to find excellent strong broad heads, good pigmentation & on the whole wide muzzles & correct bites. In some cases I would have preferred larger teeth & a broader jaw but a big improvement on a few years ago. The bitch entry had correspondingly pleasing head proportions & were unmistakably female. Presentation throughout the entry was workmanlike & sensible for a terrier that should in my opinion be able to do the work for which they were bred even if nowadays that is probably a rare event. On the down side I would like to see a little more assertiveness in showmanship & here I do know what it is like to have a Westie who would prefer to be anywhere but the show ring!

JD (3)

1 Britten’s Krisma Jump Start, well named. This lad has attitude in abundance & certainly is ‘full of his own importance’. Super head, neatest of ears always in action with great pigment. Good reach of neck leading into clean well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Good legs & feet. Well ribbed with short loin. Excellent strong topline & tailset. Plenty behind the tail & good angulation. Moved with reach & drive keeping a well balanced profile. Harshest of white coats with just the right amount of furnishings. Although still very young this lad for me should hopefully have an exciting future & I was pleased to award him the CC & BOB. Pleased to learn later he was shortlisted in the group;

2 Bartley’s Atelib The General, another with strong head properties with good proportions. I would like just a little more reach of neck. Sufficient lay of shoulder, well ribbed, good topline & tailset. Excellent double harsh coat, well presented. Moved sound & true. For overall balance I found him a little low to ground;

3 Fisher’s Havasu Head Boy.

PGD (3)

1 Fisher’s Bobo Whiskey, strongest of heads, great width & good pigmentation. Personally I would shorten head hair for balance. A shade wide in front, decent lay of shoulder, well ribbed, correct topline with enough hind angulation, nice short hock. Moved steady & with drive;

2 Tullis’ Drumsheugh McLintock, unfortunately I don’t think this boy enjoys the show ring. Lovely head & expression, good reach of neck , well ribbed with a good topline & tailset. A little down on front pasterns. Super harsh white jacket, moved true;

3 Windram’s Louis Conquistador.

LD (3,1a)

1 Cooper’s Brorastar Wanna Be Your Man, a well balanced dog, lovely presentation with a harsh workmanlike white jacket. Good reach of neck running into a well laid shoulder. Deep rib, short loin. Strong topline with excellent tailset. Well angulated quarters, moved with drive;

2 Windram’s Leonardo Ventura.

OD (1)

1 RCC, Noyce’s Armadales Son Of A Gun at Maxula, eyecatching dog with super head properties, great width of scull & a deep stop, strong muzzle. To be ultra critical I would prefer a slightly cleaner shoulder. Well ribbed, short coupled, strong level topline with an excellent tailset & carriage. Plenty behind the tail well angulated quarters. Moved with drive. Very pleasing presentation with a harsh white jacket.

VD (1)

1 Tullis’ Drumsheugh True Grit, now 10½ years old, has been a great ambassador for the breed. Lovely head & expression, wide skull, strong muzzle. Nice reach of neck into a clean shoulder. Still keeping a strong topline with good tailset. Well angulated quarters. Presented in good harsh jacket, moved true.

PB (4,1)

1 BP, Griffiths’ Karamynd May Queen, very attractive puppy & is quite the show off with a mind of her own. Lovely head & expression, deep stop, good pigment, neat ears. Pleasing reach of neck running into clean well laid shoulders. Well ribbed, short coupled, super tailset & carriage. Well angulated quarters which she used to drive round ring. Delighted to see her placed in the puppy group;

2 Bartley’s Atelib Majestic Moon, another pleasing pup with attractive head properties. Ear placement just not so good as winner. Clean well laid shoulder, well ribbed, good topline & tailset. Moved true going out & back. Well presented with a lovely jacket;

3 Crozier’s Carshairn Sound Of Islay.

JB (1)

1 Dale’s Lynnsto Evelyn All, pleasing head, good width, strong muzzle neat ears. Clean shoulders, well ribbed with short loin. Good topline & tailset. Moving a shade close behind but kept a good profile on the move. Excellent presentation.

PGB (6,1)

1 Strand’s Crinan Carousel, a lovely bitch to handle. Attractive head with correct proportions, deep stop, neat ears. Nice reach of neck running into clean well laid shoulders. Well ribbed, short coupled, strong topline with good tailset. Shown in good harsh white jacket. She has everything except a little assertiveness;

2 Smith’s Highcross Precious Charm to Lingbeck, although head proportions are good I would like trim to be a little more rugged. Clean shoulder, well ribbed, strong topline & tailset. Keeps a good profile shape on the move;

3 Jenkinson’s Highcross Crystal Charm.

LB (2,1)

1 Jenkinson’s Highcross Charmer, attractive head & expression. Nice eye & neat ears, good pigment. Clean shoulder, deep ribbed, short coupled. Moved true out & back would prefer more drive & reach. Again beautifully presented with a lovely harsh white jacket.

OB (2)

Two extremely nice bitches.

1 CC, Griffiths’ Gib Ch Top Secret de New Gryffindor at Karamynd, lovely head with good width, deep stop, neat ears & nice eye. Good reach of neck running into clean well laid shoulders. Well ribbed, short coupled with strong topline & good tailset. Well angulated quarters. Moved with reach & drive on a lovely loose lead keeping good profile shape. Pleasing presentation;

2 RCC, Cooper’s Brorastar Ain’t She Sweet, a slightly stronger bitch throughout but same comments as winner apply. She is so well balanced & presented to perfection. On the day it came down to showmanship.

VB (2)

1 BV & VG1, Smith’s Lingbeck Playing The Lady, has just joined the veteran class & still showing like a youngster. Lovely head & expression, well proportioned with good width, strong muzzle. Nice eye & neat ear. Clean shoulder, well ribbed, short coupled. Good topline & tailset. Moved with drive keeping a good profile shape; 2 Crozier’s Carshairn Caol-Ila.
