WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 26

It was a great pleasure to judge the breed at National Terrier. My first Westie was born in 1965, as a pet of course, but I won my first CC in 1970 so l have been involved in the breed, in various ways ever since. Therefore I've seen the breed in some great times and seen, and met, some amazing breeders and their dogs. But of course times change, sometimes for the worse, but sometimes for the better. I have to say the breed saddens me at this time, but luckily we do have a handful of good people trying their best to keep the breed at its best. On the day I found the breed very mixed in quality, my main winners l was delighted with. The only major fault is just lack of quality. Yes I know the gene pool is very small, but infighting hasn't helped. When l first started the top people used to say 'while we are in the breed we don't own it, we are just custodians, to produce the best quality to pass it onto the next generation', l can hear them saying it now. It's the breed l started with and it's the breed l love the most and l want the very best for it, so please take my comments in that love for the breed. VD/B (1) 1 Crozier's Carshairn Sound Of Islay. A nice type, short and compact and is very balanced. Very typical in head and expression, strong in muzzle, nice dark and nice small ears, her topline is still good and has an excellent hard coat. Moved out well too. PD (1) 1 Thomson's Ashgate Falkirk. Not a big dog but short and compact, ok in neck and shoulder, his front is good with good bone. very good in topline and tail, well ribbed, well let down hindquarters. Showed really well and also moved with soundness. Best puppy. JD (2) Not an easy class with just two and both different in many ways. The winner has a bit more leg than my second and won on his head and coat, rather upright in shoulder, he has a good reach of neck and topline, but could be a little shorter in back. Straight in front standing with good bone. But on the day not as sound as l would like. My second dog is more the balance l like, but he was also not as good in neck and shoulder as l would like. His head is very typical, strong in muzzle, excellent bite, nice dark eye, but would like smaller ears. But his coat at this time is very soft and really where l decided the placings. 1 Zederkof Ehlert Zackshine Lucky Star 2 Gillott & Carlin Nossimp Fine Beacon Of Hope LD (2,1) 1 Owen's Frisbeck Horn Pipe. A dog that's a little on the large side and l hope he has now stopped growing. I liked his head and expression which was very typical with nice small ears, dark expressive eyes. He has a good reach of neck though his shoulder are a little high set. His front is very good and with good bone. He has an excellent hard coat which was really nicely presented OD (5) 1 Britten's Bellevue Lucky Devil At Krisma. Obviously ive seen this dog of many occasions as a puppy last year, and now he has really come into his own and on the day he looked so good. So typical in so many ways. I love his head and expression, full of quality with excellent pigment. Straight in front and good bone and nice feet. his topline is good, well ribbed. He is so sound and free moving and was presented superbly. CC & BOB and Delighted to watch him go reserve best in show. I gather this win gave him his title which is so well deserved. 2 Burns' Burneze Lets Be Frank. Another young dog, like my winner, just a little different in some ways. As we have to come to expect from this exhibitor, he was presented in first class order and moves with such assurance for one so young. He has a super outline, good reach of neck, excellent topline short in body and tail bang on top. I could a lot about as l did about my winner. For me there is just a little too much of him to be very critical. 3 Zaccariello Zackshine Thunderstruck PB (2) Two really immature babies and also difficult to say too much as they both need a lot of time. My winner was the best balanced of the two, short and compact, ok in head and ears, dark eye, good in topline and tailset, and moved out quite nicely. My second was very raw and needs quite a bit of time, not quite as as good ion neck and shoulder as my winner, she is very feminine in head and expression but her ears could be a little higher placed 1 Stankiene & Stankus Vivolunar Devil In A Dress 2 Disley's Ashgate Fala PGB (2) 1 Crozier's Dalskairth Braemar Belle. Good moving bitch with a good head and expression, strong in muzzle nice dark eye, nice small ears. Could be a little better in neck and shoulder, her topline is good and is well ribbed, excellent hard coat, nicely presented. 2 Chambers' Circinus Dreaming All. Standing this bitch presents a nice outline. Her coat is not quite as hard as my winner. She is very feminine in head and expression, with a nice dark eye, good bone, well ribbed. But sadly on the day just did'nt want to move, maybe she was having one of those off days!! LB (5,1) 1 Coley's Karamynd Hot Foot To Kingsview. A really nice bitch to go over and on the day presented so nicely. She is a nice size, good outline, excellent topline and tasil. Very feminine in head and expression, strong in muzzle, excellent big teeth, nice small ears, really comes together on the move and really good driving action in profile. On the day she was just carrying a little too much weight, but that's being critical. Res CC 2 Fryer's Hopecharm La Vie En Rose. A very showy bitch who is still a little young and can develop a bit more in body. But having said she has a lovely outline, excellent topline and tail, good in hindquarters. She has a lovely head and expression with nice small ears, she has a straight front but not quite as good in shoulder as my winner. 3 Crozier's Dalskairth Kirkcolm Cutie OB (6) 1 Burns' Burneze Maid To Measure I really last saw this young bitch when l gave her best puppy in show at the Border Union in 25, today she looked a picture. A typical feminine Westie. Short and compact, well ribbed, excellent topline and tail. She has the most lovely head and expression, nice dark eye, good reach of neck, nothing really l would change about her. on the move carries herself so well. Well deserved the bitch CC which made her up I was told afterwards. Boy was it tough judging BOB but the male just made more of himself on the day, but let me tell you it wasn't easy. 2 Britten's Ch Krisma Winter Sun. Another of course another who l have watched and have always admired her and to go over l wasn't surprised how nice she is. Very typical in so many ways, so feminine in head and expression, straight in front, good reach of neck, excellent topline, short in body. Just had to bow to the younger bitch today and l hope she now enjoys her retirement, she deserves it. 3 Zaccariello It Zackshine Lady Gaga. A bitch l judged in Italy two years ago and l did like her a lot. That was then and today was now and a different competition. She is a nice type what l like short and compact, but on the day she did not move soundly and against my winners that counted, her coat could have been in better trim too.
