WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 13

West Highland White Terriers

I found it to be a very sad day for my breed. Type was lacking, it is as if everyone wants to have their own personal idea of a perfect West Highland & so pay scant attention to the Standard as laid down by the KC. Any understanding of correct movement has gone by the board as it seems that the current thinking is to move the dog as fast as possible often turning a good moving dog into a frenetic chaser with hind legs going at 90mph & showing no drive.

Two other problems currently exist & both are very worrying.

It must be more than 20 years now since judges started to criticise small teeth. They should now be commenting on very small teeth, often only just appearing from the gums which in the main were very red possibly indicating infection. Not only were teeth very small, they were so often misplaced. Partially undershot, crooked, growing in all directions. I was shocked – you have managed to turn me into a mouth fanatic & previously I had believed that the dog had to have overall conformation which would allow him to catch the rabbit before his teeth became of any major importance!

The second sad fact is that the expression has now changed. It has changed because so many dogs do not have any build up of bone under the eye. The eyes are not deep set as the Standard originally called for and so the varminty or wicked expression has given way to a much softer look. I realise that the new Standard does not call for deep set eyes but in reality they might well not have bothered taking it out as it seems to have gone anyway.

In conversation I hear people say that they like the soft gentle look. Can I suggest that if you prefer the dog to have a soft look go and buy a Dandie Dinmont & leave those of us who love the West Highland’s truly wicked expression to try to maintain it before it disappears forever.

However, having had my go on the soap box I now turn to my winners & will try to include some dogs who were unlucky as hairs had to be split to make decisions in several cases.

My BOB & DCC winner came as a great shock to me. I had watched Ch Pepabby Prank (Edmondson) win many firsts & CCs from being a youngster but he never excited me. A good honest dog was how I saw him from the ringside. However, on going over him here I can appreciate why he has done so much winning. Wherever I put my hands on that dog, I found what I was looking for. His construction is exemplary. His head & expression is a joy & his shoulder placement cannot be faulted. He has good bone, well muscled, short coupled & he shows himself so very well. I was pleased to see him in the cut for the group, I think that this was his 12th CC, I am sure there will be many more to come.

The BCC winner turned out to be Pranks’ daughter made up here & his first ch offspring, Comdale Miss January at Hillsted. She excelled in movement & was very well balanced with no exaggerations. She had come through from a very close fought limit class which had produced three very possible winners including Prank’s half-sister Pepabby Pirouette but her rear drive had secured her win. In the challenge she had beaten the lovely open winner Ch Bellevue Town Flirt at Gilbri simply because of her steadiness on the move.

Town Flirt has been a big winner for a while now & is very pleasing to go over. Beautifully presented as always & really seems to enjoy her showing.

RDCC was an old favourite of mine, Ch Lillmill What’s It All About, he excels in type. Now almost 8 years he still looks the part, very strongly made dog, short coupled, excellent bone & muscle & moves with real drive. Great to see him go on to win the veteran stakes.

The puppy dogs were a little disappointing with just two entries in minor puppy & none in puppy dog. Both minor pups were heavy boned 7 month olds. The winner Sweetzer’s Ambalasi Splash And Dash had an iffy mouth but was overall better constructed than Bartley’s Yushama Shooting Star who was upright in shoulder. Both dogs moved wide behind. Had I known at this point that mouths were going to be such a problem then my decision might have been different. JD (8) Some close mouths in this class who paid the penalty.

1 Hughes’ Brychdyn Diamond Geezer, good type, very well balanced strong boned & in super coat. Moved with drive & should do well as he progresses through the ranks. His presentation was very smart;

2 Carlin & Gillott’s Lizandycris Check Me Out, another good type, well boned slightly larger than 1 & also possessing a strong white coat;

3 Strands’ Crinan Code Name Westlake.

ND (1)

1 C Code Name Westlake, presents a very pleasing outline, well balanced & with correct shoulders he moves very well too. Unfortunately he was out of coat hence his third in the previous class.

GD (1)

1 Dingley’s Davot Chevie Chaser, a worthy winner being very well balanced, lovely shoulders, deep chest, correct head with lovely expression.

PGD (8) 1 Thomson’s Ashgate US Apollo;

2 Jenkinson’s Highcross Willie Be Charmed a close second. Both dogs were very well presented & were correct in type. Pleasing heads with lovely expressions, the decision was made on the shoulder placement as I preferred Apollo in this area;

3 Budge’s Charmedautum Dazzle.

LD (7)

It proved to be a really difficult class as I was impressed with both

1 Jennings’ Comdale Johnny Boy; & 2 Kabel & Bouwhuis’ Llovall A King Of Hearts, both were of the correct type. Nothing to split them on heads as both were exhibiting strong heads with lovely West Highland expressions, good shoulder placement on both dogs. Johnny Boy was very well presented & in good coat whereas King Of Hearts needs a new jacket to complete the picture & this was where the decision was made; 3 Storey’s Nossimp Written In The Stars. OD (7) 1 CC & BOB, Edmondson’s Ch Pepabby Prank;

2 RCC, Lilley & Milling’s Ch Lilmill What’s It All About;

3 Lewis’ Ch Lynnsto Man About Town.

MPB (2)

1 Hunt’s Kellethrigg Lucky Charm standing alone in this class at 7 months. She was not on her best behaviour & proved difficult to handle, overawed by the noise & goings on in the hall which was a pity as she was a very nice type with a lovely dark eye & really piercing expression. Good white coat. Hope she settles.

PB (4)

Three real beauties in this class, all maturing differently as puppies do.

1 & BP, Gaydon’s Gilbri Town Tease, whose outline is dead square & so is maturing evenly. She has a really wicked expression, well boned & moves with real drive. Excellent shoulders & strong backend for one so young. Looks like a really bright future;

2 Jennings’ Comdale Just Jilly, head, expression & movement as good as 1 but is maturing differently so does not have the square outline of 1 & this was the deciding factor. Another very bright future;

3 Jenkinson’s Highcross Charmer.

JB (9)

Very difficult class to judge as there were several very good exhibits on show so we are down to splitting hairs. All of the five in the cards were possible winners & will change places in the future as they mature.

1 Lancaster’s Clanestar Cloudchaser, got the nod here. Beautiful balance, square outline, correct head with excellent expression & moves with real drive. Certainly one to watch. Giving her a strong run for her money was

2 Morton’s Brychdyn Carrie On Swifdon, lower to ground than 1 but another very pleasing exhibit. Correct head, lovely neck & shoulders, very good bum! These two will change places as they go through the ranks;

3 Davidson’s Lynnsto That’ll Do Nicely.

GB (1)

1 Ash’s Hillcloud Ice, very attractive bitch, lovely type, cobby & with a super coat, excellent neck & shoulders, moved very well. She was a consideration in the challenge.

PGB (6)

Not the strongest class of the day with the winners being very obvious from the start.

1 Squires’ Kimgarwyn Miss Molly, very pleasing bitch presenting a good outline, well balanced with very nice shoulders, moved & showed well;

2 Hayton’s Pedrohay Silver Magnolia, good honest bitch with no outstanding faults;

3 Sweetzer’s Bellevue Wild At Heart.

LB (10)

Here again there were several dogs who could have taken top spot & will do in the future.

1 CC, Fox’s Comdale Miss January At Hillsted;

2 Britten’s Krisma Storm In A Teacup, very similar in size & type to 1. Lovely layback of shoulder, beautifully presented but did not have the rear drive of 1;

3 Edmondson’s Pepabby Pirouette.

OB (8)

A plethora of champions here.

1 RCC, Gaydon’s Ch Bellevue Town Flirt at Gilbri;

2 Coley’s Ch Karamynd On Cue for Kingsview, lovely type & size, good head, neck & shoulders with a super tight jacket. On another day could easily change places with 1;

3 Carlin & Gillott’s Ch Lizandycris Aint She Grand.
