WEST HIGHLAND WHITE LEEDS 12 Judge: Mr Ken Corri BEST OF BREED : 8255 BRITTEN Mrs D Ch Walk The Line Vom Deipen Brook To Krisma (Imp) WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE LEEDS 12 West Highland White Terrier Very much a day for quality exhibits in strong competition with few absentees. There was a narrow margin between placement positions in most classes. Several adults were well worthy of appearance in a Group & I was especially pleased to find some very good youngsters in the early classes, which bodes well for the immediate future. My overall concern for the longer term future of the breed lies in the failure to achieve two key features of the Standard. Firstly the requirement for "teeth large for the size of the dog” is too often not being met, even when the bite is correct. Secondly hindquarter construction often lacks well flexed stifles. More importantly, incorrect alignment of hindquarter joints & bones is again too prevalent & all too obvious when movement is viewed from behind & judged against the Standard. With the odd exception, exhibits were well turned out & presented. I appreciate how much hard work is entailed in coat preparation & the overall result was a credit to everyone concerned & to the appearance of the breed in the ring. MPD (2) 1 McLoughlin’s Ley Hey Latest Legend, promising youngster who settled down well in the ring & moved with confidence & purpose. Nicely proportioned, all the attributes of a correct head were there, nice straight front, correct shoulder placement & hindquarter angulation gave him free & easy movement, nice level back & a good coat for his age; 2 Lancaster’s Clanestar Commander Bond, promising youngster with similar attributes to 1 but on the day did not live up to his name. Something spooked him & despite every effort by his handler, he did not settle down in the ring. Structurally sound with good angulation all round, but unhappy on the move today. PD (3) 1 Jenning’s Comdale Johnny Boy, one of two very nice youngsters of promise in this class. Full of himself & alert & active throughout his time in the ring, strong build with good bone, nicely proportioned, correct shoulder set, well bent stifle, tail on top, correct double coat, free straight & easy movement all round. BPD; 2 Purchon’s Lindenka Donovan, similar attributes to 1 with dark eyes, well set neat ears & a straight front, less lively than 1 but beautifully prepared & performed well on the move; 3 Milner’s Juanne Flamenco Finlay. JD (2) 1 Hayton’s Pedrohay Roberto, there is much to like in this nicely maturing youngster, correct skull features, masculine expression, well set neat ears, dark eye, correct bite, nicely proportioned body with deep chest & level back, well laid back shoulders, strong quarters, stifles well flexed, correct double coat, moved free, straight & effortless but with confidence, drive & good balance, well presented; 2 Windram’s Leonardo Ventura, not of the quality of 1 & was unsettled in the ring, strong build, straight front, correct head attributes, shoulder set & hindquarter angulation acceptable. Correct double coat. Nervous & did not move well. PGD (4) 1 Kabel’s Llovall A King Of Hearts, mature, alert & well constructed young dog, well proportioned with good bone & muscle, nicely balanced when standing free & on the move, strong head with well set neat ears & dark eyes, neck flowed well into well laid back shoulders, nice straight front, deep ribbed, short backed body & strong, well angulated hindquarters, well set tail & correct white double coat, moved freely with drive & purpose, looked good, presented well; 2 Jenkinson’s Highcross Willie Be Charmed, different type to 1, strongly built slightly larger masculine dog, with good bone, deep chest & strong hindquarters, correct shoulder set & well angulated hindquarters but was less free & easy on the move than 1. Well presented & handled; 3 Fletcher-Kings’ Kellbany White Wizard at Ley Hey. LD (4) 1 Fox’s Hillsted Same Again, mature masculine dog with a good head & front that moved straight & free with drive, & was keen & confident throughout, head exhibited all the required attributes & the neck flowed well into a lovely straight front & well laid back shoulders, well proportioned & with a deep chested body & level back, strong hindquarters, well set, firmly held ears & tail on top completed a balanced profile, well prepared & presented, very good all round performance. RCC; 2 Gillott’s Lizandycris Devlin Disgise, outclassed by 1 in virtually all departments but still a well proportioned, masculine looking dog with strong bone & muscle, head, neck & front had all the correct attributes, as did the body, but not the hindquarters, well prepared double coat, well presented but its movement on the day did not do Devlin Disgise any favours; 3 Millen’s Sarmac Starlite Express. OD (5) A class of quality dogs that was a pleasure to go over. Slightly different in type but with the necessary physical attributes, presence & masculinity. Proved easy to fill placement one, less so placements 2 & 3. All were well handled & shown to best advantage. 1 Britten’s Ch Walk The Line Vom Deipen Brook to Krisma, top quality dog & he knows it, beautifully proportioned with a lovely reach of neck setting off a strong masculine head with all the required attributes, lovely smooth topline in profile, strongly built with good bone & muscle, deep chest, well shaped hindquarters & a short coupled body with level back, neck flowed beautifully into a nice straight, tight front, correct shoulder set, well flexed stifles, tail on top, a well prepared white double coat in excellent condition completed the picture, balanced on the move & held its topline well. Moved free, straight & effortlessly with plenty of drive. CC & BOB; 2 Gordon’s Ch Lamsmore Fitzwritin, well built, well proportioned masculine dog, with many of the physical attributes of 1, under a coat prepared to perfection but not to my taste for a working terrier, moved free, straight & true but on the day lacked the drive, polish & showmanship of 1. Nonetheless a dog of the highest quality; 3 Ch Pepabby Prank. VD (4) 1 McLoughlin’s Ley Hey Living Legend, young veteran dog with a strong head, deep chest & powerful quarters, good physical proportions & a nice profile, well set shoulders & good bend of stifle gave free & easy, if somewhat lazy movement, coat in good condition & nicely prepared, well handled. BV; 2 Taylor’s Birkfell Second Chance, young veteran displaying many of the physical attributes of 1 but with slightly less well set shoulders, coat preparation also required a little more attention, moved well & was well handled; 3 Lynch’s Bobby Jozef at Linacrelads. MPB (4) 1 Kabel & Bouwhuis’ Llovall All It Takes, promising youngster of quality who despite being wary of her surroundings still managed to show herself off to advantage, nicely proportioned & well balanced when on the move, dark eyed with neat, well placed ears & a lovely feminine expression, neck flowed well into correctly located shoulders & straight front, short backed with well angulated hindquarters & a white double coat in good condition. Moved tentatively at first before settling down, movement typical of youngsters but free & easy; 2 Lancaster’s Clanestar Cloud Chaser, quality youngster who remained keen & interested throughout, stepping out with confidence, lovely head & feminine expression, straight front, well laid back shoulders, good turn of stifle, carried her head & topline well, balanced & purposeful on the move, correct well prepared coat, well handled, pushed 1 hard; 3 Mcloughlin’s Llovall Look Here Ley Hey. PB (7) A class of lovely quality puppy bitches. 1 Britten’s Krisma Storm In A Teacup, top quality very feminine young bitch, beautifully proportioned, smooth topline, graceful reach of neck, well proportioned head with correct eye, ear & mouth attributes, straight neat front, excellent shoulder placement, short coupled with a level back, strong, well angulated hindquarters, tail on top, white double coat beautifully prepared, confident effortless movement, showy & graceful. BP; 2 Gaydon’s Bellevue Wanna Be at Gilbri had very similar qualities & attributes to those of 1, little to differentiate between the two on construction & even less on movement. A top quality puppy bitch well balanced structurally & on the move. Preferred the proportions, coat & performance of 1, but a very close decision; 3 Squire’s Kimgaryn Orchid. JB (3) 1 Hayton’s Pedrohay Silver Magnolia, nicely proportioned feminine bitch, correct skull proportions & features with dark eyes & neat ears, strong jaws with correct bite, straight front, smooth topline, neck flowed smoothly into shoulders & front, good shoulder set, strong deep body, level back, well angulated hindquarters, moved freely with drive, well prepared & presented; 2 Squire’s Kimgaryn Miss Molly, quality bitch, well constructed but very feminine, well proportioned head with correct eye, ear & jaw attributes, straight front, well laid back shoulders, deep chest & strong hindquarters, good turn of stifle, tail on top, white double coat in good condition. Nicely prepared & handled. Close decision but preferred proportions & movement of 1. PGB (4) 1 Edmondson’s Peppaby Pirouette, lovely high calibre bitch, well constructed & with good physical proportions & a nice profile, lovely feminine expression complemented dark eyes & neat ears, straight front, well laid back shoulders & a good turn of stifle, deep ribs & a level back, tail well set & a correct white double coat completed the picture, movement was free & easy but nicely controlled; 2 Hunt’s Kellethrigg Serenade Girl, bitch of quality, well constructed with good bone & muscle but still very feminine, well proportioned strong head, with dark eyes & small, erect, well set ears, strong jaw with correct teeth & bite, straight front, good shoulder set, deep ribbed, short coupled body with level back, strong hindquarters with well flexed stifles, correct double coat, well prepared & in good condition, moved straight & free, handled & presented well; 3 Fox’s Comdale Miss January at Hillsted. LB (7) 1 Gaydon’s Gilbri Royal Sapphire, top quality, mature bitch, nicely proportioned & structurally balanced, strong well proportioned head with small, neat ears & dark eyes, lovely feminine expression, graceful neck & straight front, good shoulder set & turn of stifle, compact, deep ribbed body & well angulated, strong hindquarters, correct double coat, well prepared & in good condition. Moved freely & with drive. RCC; 2 Jennings’ Comdale Starr, yet another good quality well proportioned bitch, with the physical attributes of 1, lovely head on a graceful neck which flowed nicely into a straight front & well laid back shoulders, strong body & hindquarters, good bone & muscle, correct white coat, moved with purpose & drive, free & easy straight movement without effort. Pushed 1 hard; 3 Windram’s Cochansa Dales Pride. OB (4) 1 Gillott & Carlin’s Lizandycris Aint She Grand, lived up to her name, quality bitch that looked good & performed well throughout, nicely proportioned with a good outline & smooth topline, strong head, correctly proportioned, with correct eyes & ears well set, strong jaw, lovely feminine expression, neck flowed nicely into a straight front & well set shoulders, deep ribbed body, short coupled to strong well angulated hindquarters, good bone & firm muscles throughout, correct double coat, tail on top, moved effortlessly with drive, keen & alert throughout. A worthy winner. CC; 2 Smith’s Fine Romance, top quality bitch with all the physical attributes of 1, who performed well & pressed very hard indeed, but I preferred the structural balance & movement of 1; 3 Smith’s Lingbeck Leading Lady. VB (1) 1 Hayton’s Silver Senorita of Pedrohay, 7½ years, well constructed bitch who performed extremely well, strong skull of correct proportions was set off by dark eyes, neat, small ears & a nice feminine expression, good straight front & deep ribbed body, strong hindquarters & a well prepared correct coat. Movement was not brisk but straight & true. A good performance. KEN CORRI |
