WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE CRUFTS 22
I thank the Crufts Committee for inviting me to judge the breed I have been involved in showing for almost 30 years. To step out on to the green carpet to be greeted by so many wonderful examples of the breed is the ultimate pleasure for any breeder and the responsibility placed on a judge is immense. I hope I lived up to that responsibility.
91 dogs making 95 entries, in this day and age, is sadly a very good entry. The days when we had up to 200 westies at Crufts seems to be a thing of the past. Many excellent examples of the breed had travelled great distances from around Europe. What a shame they are not in our ring throughout the show season.
I have been concerned for some time that perhaps we are at risk of losing the strong heads in our breed and I think this is something we should continue to watch. However, I was pleased to see some good heads with the bony ridges above the eye and well made up below the eye with good stops and a real dome with correct ear placement giving that true westie expression.
The first class of the day was Veteran Dog with the majority of the exhibits in their ninth year. This was a wonderful first class to greet a judge with so many quality oldies strutting their stuff so proudly. It bought a tear to my eye seeing them going around the ring
Difficult decisions had to be made which I am sure disappointed many exhibitors. I was spoilt for choice in the open classes with so many fine examples of the breed. But having said that there were also some very promising exhibits in the earlier classes, many of whom I am sure will make their mark on the breed in the future.
I thank every exhibitor who bought their dog into the ring for my opinion and thank everyone for the friendly atmosphere both inside and around the ring.
I was surprised and touched by all the messages of appreciation I received from spectators and exhibitors and the many positive comments on social media following the show, especially the messages and comments from those who were not placed particularly high in their class.
This appointment, judging at the show where I aspired to qualify my very first pet westie to enter, has to be the pinnacle of my judging career. It is something I could never have imagined achieving. A dream come true.
Veteran Dog 8 (3)
What a wonderful first class to greet a judge with these oldies strutting their stuff so proudly.
1st Grubiauskiene & Klikna, Int Ch. Marc Antoine De La Fonema. A nine year old who certainly belied his age. Such a pleasure to go over him. Such a well muscled body without an ounce of fat that many of our oldies can accumulate. He had an excellent head with a super bite, excellent shoulder placement and well angulated rear. Super coat texture and presentation. Moved at one with his young handler. Could not be denied this first place. I had no hesitation in awarding him Best Veteran in Breed.
2nd Lilley & Milling, Ch. Lilmill Nosey Parker. One I have always admired. He was so unlucky to meet 1 today. Like the 1st his body tone was super he is well muscled with no fat ridges. Very strong bone with strong head of correct proportions. Good shoulder placement and rear angulation. A very fit 9 year old. . A super example of our breed and a credit to his owner.
3rd Ch Hillsted Masquerade at Thozow

Skrobiszewska, Cib/Am GCh Vision of Vertragus EW18. Headed a strong class. This dog caught my eye as he entered the ring. An excellent example of the breed with nothing overstated. Super presentation with the whitest of coats, very well balanced dog with nothing exaggerated about him. Good reach of neck leading to well placed shoulders. Compact body with level top line which he kept on the move. Well muscled rear with hocks well under allowing him to drive with free movement. Very well handled whilst at the same time allowing this dog to show himself to full advantage. Pleased to award him the CC and BOB
2nd Kanasova, Int Ch Million Reasons Sunshine Celebration WW21 EW 21 Another super dog who was very unlucky to meet 1 today. Such a well balanced dog, good head with wide muzzle, deep in chest, very short coupled, tail on top. The harshest of coats which must not be easy to trim to give this first class presentation. A very striking dog. RCC

1st Petrulyte, Selenidera All Eyes on Me Sl Jch, Cz Jch, Lt Ch, Est Jch. (2nd in Junior Bitch).
2nd Owen, Egremont Joy Ride.
The two in this class were very different bitches, with No. 2 being more to the breed standard in size.. No 2 is a very nice type and one I have admired from the ring side but today she seemed quite immature and I feel needs time. This was a difficult class to judge with two very different bitches. 2nd lost out on coat texture and maturity today.

A lovely head with a typical westie expression. Straight front, elbows well in, moving with reach and drive. So very sympathetically handled which brings out the best. She free stacks herself so proudly typical of the westies from this kennel. A real showgirl and you can see her enjoys every minute she is in the ring.
