WEST HIGHLAND WHITE CRUFTS 13 West Highland White Terrier Judge(s): MRS D BRITTEN West Highland White Terriers To judge your own breed at Crufts is the experience of a lifetime, but to have the wonderful entry of quality West Highlands that I had was a true privilege. It provided a true spectrum of the breed, not only from the UK, but from all over the world. I will never forget it. The open dog class was outstanding & the open bitch class spectacular. My ring stewards who were so helpful & efficient commented on the great atmosphere among the Westie people – a great compliment to all. While there were many top drawer exhibits, with good heads, there are still quite a number with poor heads; not just lacking stop, but very narrow skulls with eyes close together. I know there are those who say they can’t walk on their heads, but without those distinctive broad skulls, defined stop & broad muzzles, they are just generic white terriers. Also no amount of furnishings & hairdressing can compensate for the bone structure beneath. Trimming styles can change from year to year, but one that I find so untypical of the breed is the trend for very close trimming of the body with lashings of furnishings on the legs & the skirt. The best trimmers make them look natural & unexaggerated. VD (9) 1 Lilley & Milling’s Ch Lilmill What’s It All About, great to see a veteran in such sparkling form & condition. Strong skull & foreface, muscular neck running into well laid shoulders, strong quarters with plenty of muscle. Hard white dense coat, put down so well. He moved with enthusiasm & drive; 2 Grubiauskiene & Klikna’s Int Ch My Number One Superbia, a real showman who moved so freely. Very good in neck & shoulder & strong hindquarters. Not as good in head as 1, would prefer less flowing furnishings on his legs & skirt; 3 McLoughlin’s Ley Hey Living Legend, masculine dog of good type. Pleasing head & construction. Moved well once the handler got out her compass. PD (8) 1 Thomson’s Ashgate Gleouraich, lovely outline to this puppy, pleasing head with good stop & expression. He has good reach of neck with well laid shoulders, short back & tail on top. His strong hindquarters proved themselves on the move, when he moved with freedom. BPD; 2 Corri’s Inverglen Lowe’n’Behold, masculine puppy with great head & expression. Well placed shoulders, good body & substance & well off for bone. He moved well but not quite as strongly behind as 1; 3 Steemson’s Bocans Risky Business, this puppy also had a good outline & was well balanced. Pleasing head, good shoulders & short coupled, great tailset. Coat not as good as the first two. Moved very well. JD (7) 1 Hughes’ Brychdyn Diamond Geezer, I was very impressed by this youngster. He has a beautiful head with strong skull, good stop, broad muzzle & neat ears. Very well balanced with well laid shoulders & short back. Tail bang on top. Free mover. I felt the close trimming of his hindquarters didn’t do justice to his construction; 2 Squire’s Kimgarwyn Defender, a dog who I have admired from the ringside. Very masculine & strong. Good head with broad skull & muzzle, well laid shoulders on muscular neck. Powerful quarters that he used well on the move; 3 Hasselgren’s Tweed Time For Business, pleasing head, very good in neck & shoulders & well balanced. YD (7) 1 West’s Tomlyndon Power Of Love, a young dog of very good type & well balanced, strong head with good stop. Good reach of neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Short coupled with tail carried very well. Moved with good stretch & drive; 2 Przygodzka’s Gajusz Juliusz Cesar from Vixan, well constructed dog who moved extremely well. Good coat but would have preferred less furnishings as they flapped about on the move; 3 Purchon’s Lindenka Donovan, freestanding dog who is always good to see. Well balanced & of good type with pleasing head. Very black pigment. Did not move with the enthusiasm of the first two. PGD (13) 1 Flamang’s J Ch Magic Mondriaan vom Maerchengarten, eyecatching dog with great head, good reach of neck & clean shoulders, well angulate hindquarters. Tail bang on top & moved with drive. Presented a lovely outline; 2 Thomson’s Ashgate US Apollo, masculine dog with good head & expression. Well balanced & powerful mover. Not quite the tail carriage of 1; 3 Corri’s Inverglen Lord Of The Manor, very good for type & had a strong head with correct stop & plenty of width between the eyes. Lovely neck & good shoulders. On the move I felt he lacked the power of the first two. LD (10) Strong class of varying types. 1 Jennings’ Comdale Johnny Boy, they don’t come more masculine than this boy. Great bone & substance, strong skull, excellent bite, muscular neck & clean shoulders. Level topline, freestanding with tail bang on. Moved with power, reaching & driving. I felt in the challenge he lost out a little on the final finish of maturity; 2 Van Der Veeen’s Alborado Lucho, another great mover, very free & animated. Short back, good tailset powerful quarters. Not as strong in skull as 1; 3 Taylor & Metcalfe’s Flassendale Fairlie, this dog excels in head & forehand. He is real quality & looked the best I have seen him. So well balanced & presented to look a typical West Highland. Showed well, not quite as assertively as the first two but going well for his handler. OD (19) What a class, full of quality but varying in type. Dogs went cardless who I rated highly as I was splitting hairs. 1 Fraser’s Whitebriar Jaw Dropper, this dog had everything I could ask for on the day. Strong head, good breadth of skull, defined stop & broad muzzle. Beautiful in neck & shoulder with the kind of strong, muscular neck that has good reach without being overdone & flowing into clean, well laid shoulders. Strong topline & well set tail always well carried. Moved with freedom, energy & drive. Hard, white straight coat. If I were to be critical, it would be that there was something about the trimming of the hindquarters that could look odd at certain angles, however CC, BOB & I was delighted to see him be shortlisted in the group; 2 Gordon’s Ch Lamsmore Fitzwritin, gave a really good account of himself in the ring. Strongly made with good bone & well constructed throughout. He has a good width of skull & strong muzzle. Neat ears, well carried. Good balance & strong hindquarters. He is a dog who gave his best to his handler, striding out with style. He is immaculately groomed but not quite the quality of coat of 1. RCC; 3 Edmondson’s Ch Pepabby Prank, if you are looking for correct construction, this is your dog. Beautifully made head, strong skull, good stop, well made up under the eyes, broad, deep muzzle, excellent bite, large teeth. Good reach of neck & well laid shoulders, short back. The best tail set possible & strong well angulated hindquarters. He moved well, but a shade less enthusiastically than the first two. GCD (1) 1 Fletcher-King’s Kellbany White Wizard, good construction & of good type. Moved well & was as well behaved as his owner. VB (12) Great to see so many older bitches in such good form. 1 Hasselgren & Arevik’s Int/Sw/Fin/Dan/Nor Ch Rowdycharm Chessie, bitch who is so well balanced & very feminine. Pleasing head & expression, very good forehand, still the cleanest of shoulders, short back & strong backend. She moved with ease round the ring like a spring chicken; 2 Gaydon’s Ch Wistonant Royal Ruby at Gilbri, another bitch who is not showing her age & is in really good condition. Good head, short back, very strong quarters, not quite the tailset of 1. She was most capably & sympathetically handled to best advantage by her young handler; 3 Lohner’s Dt/Kft/Dt/Vdh/A/Bun/A Ch Sparkling Uptown Girl, such a feminine bitch with a lovely outline. Feminine with no exaggeration & excellent shoulders. Very good front reach on the move & gave a very good performance. PB (10) Lovely class, all fresh as daisies. 1 Gaydon’s Gilbri Town Tease, a youngster who holds herself so well both standing & on the move. A joy to see her standing without any propping up & so proud. Correct head & good reach of neck running into short back. Tail bang on. Moved excellently. BP; 2 Jennings’ Comdale Charlie Girl, another who I really admired & gave the impression that she had been this way before. Strongly made with good bone & substance but still feminine. Very pleasing head, well laid shoulders, short back, tail bang on. Strong hindquarters, great coat texture. Gave a good account of herself on the move; 3 Dale’s Crystal Kiss, very feminine bitch & in lovely coat & condition. Pleasing head & nice type. Moved well but perhaps not with the enthusiasm of the first two. JB (11) 1 Lancaster’s Clanestar Cloud Chaser, attractive, classy, elegant bitch & the sort who will take time to mature but everything in the right place. Well balanced & constructed. Very good head & expression with neat ears. Well laid shoulders & short coupled with well set tail. Carries herself with ease & keeps her outline; 2 Morton’s Brychdyn Carrie on Swifdon, a young bitch with plenty of animation. Very good head & well constructed. Moved very well, tail always bang on; 3 Lewis’ Bellevue Day Dream for Leodhas, very cobby, pretty bitch. Well muscled & ultra short in back. Moved well & happily for her owner. YB (10) 1 Noyce’s Maxula Box Of Tricks, bitch of very nice type. Very good in head, strong neck & well placed shoulders. Well muscled hindquarters & moved well. Perhaps, like myself, she would benefit from a lower calorie intake; 2 Ash’s Hillcloud Ice, another short backed bitch, excelled in hindquarters & I loved her head & expression. Really short carrot tail; 3 Bamas’ Gazoline du Clan des Hamilton, a more elegant bitch than the first two & still needing time to mature. Beautiful fine shoulders & generally well constructed. Free mover. PGB (8) 1 Dunne’s Hillcloud Ice Flake, very feminine bitch with pleasing head & well constructed. She flowed round the ring, keeping her topline firm. She is free showing & looks best when she stands herself. Would like a little more of her; 2 Hunt’s Kellethrigg Serenade Girl, a very honest bitch with very good neck & shoulders. Good construction & really moved with stretch & drive; 3 Rose’s Jopeta Jorja On My Mind, a very typical bitch with the correct head & well constructed. She moved soundly but I felt she would give a little more if she perhaps joined weight watchers. LB (13) A class with depth of quality. 1 Fox’s Comdale Miss January at Hillsted, won this class on her femininity & movement. A very nice bitch to go over & I feel she will go on maturing & improving. Everything is in the right place & she excels in movement, really stretching out on the move; 2 Burns’ Burneze Plan Bea, very close up to 1. A strong bitch who really catches the eye. She is well put together with a lovely head & expression. Moves very freely & makes the most of herself. Immaculately groomed with seamless trimming that looks so natural, it is a work of art. Just preferred the femininity of 1; 3 Hughes’ Brychdyn Remarque, a quality bitch, so well put together. Well off for bone & strong head. She was looking & feeling a little heavy & would benefit from a few less carbs. OB (20) An incredible class, with worthy exhibits going cardless. I hated seeing them leave the ring. 1 Griffiths’ Ch Karamynd Drama Queen, so typical, so feminine, so free. She had it all for me. A great head with the really wicked expression, very well constructed with ultra short back & short, carrot like tail, bang on top at all times. Very assertive on the move, stretching & driving with her muscular hindquarters. What a class to win. CC; 2 Gaydon’s Ch Bellevue Town Flirt at Gilbri, one I have given a CC to before & she didn’t disappoint. Such a beautiful outline & so well balanced & will always remain a great favourite of mine. Not quite the head of 1 & just lost it a little in the final move off. RCC; 3 Del Pino & Kryszak’s Ch/Esp/Pt/Gib Ch Hormiga Atomica of New Gryffindor, another wonderful bitch, full of quality & style. Strong but feminine head, excellent balance throughout. Great neck & shoulder, short back, great tailset. Moved with such enthusiasm. Beautifully presented. DOT BRITTEN |
