WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 16

West Highland White Terriers

Thanks for a good entry for the times in terms of numbers & quality. No doubt most exhibitors are aware of my intolerances so there were only a couple of poor bites, & one instance of very small teeth. I would expect the exhibitors concerned are aware of these faults so I’ve not highlighted them where I could have in the class critiques. The same applies to the exhibitors of the male with the worryingly kinked tail, & the one with a large lump on the back of its tail. Coats were generally very good although I did have to place some less than ideal topcoats. I much prefer a hard tight topcoat with a little wave through it, to one that is perfectly straight but more open, & maybe with a hint of product, & therefore less protective.

MPD (3,1a)

1 Tullis’ Drumsheugh Mclintock, raw, balanced, 6 month old with little in the way of furnishings & not showing much evidence of schooling, but saw enough to be able to assess. Very male head & hard tight white topcoat with well set tail of good length, & nice straight front;

2 Eyre’s Albacharms Big It Up Bandit, more developed 8 month old carrying more, but not better, coat. Liked his shape & well developed hindquarters, & he moved well. Feet much more turned out than 1’s & not the strength of head either.

PD (3,1)

1 A Big It Up Bandit;

2 Owens’ Duncabury Audre Rieu, 8 month old with the advantage of a more male head, thought he would be the winner at first but on further examination that couldn’t be the case.

JD (3,1)

1 Purchon’s Lindenka I’m Dexter, has this kennel’s typical outline & male head shape with big nose & teeth, coat of good texture, well set tail, nice front standing;

2 Dale’s Lynnsto Judgement Day, not quite strength of head nor the coat quality, nice topline, good hindquarters & tail of good length but, as the exhibitor knows, she needs to stop him crabbing.

GD (3,1)

1 Foster’s Hillsted Masquerade at Thozow, up to size & carrying more coat than I like, although it is of good texture. Good head, nice overall balance & outline;

2 Mitchell’s Lord Leonardo at Frazandmitch, good size with short back & tail, hard coat & decent front. Both moved well but I would have liked them to have higher head carriage.

PGD (6,1)

1 Crockett, Western & Jenkins’ Havasu Headlining, smallest dog in the class but to the Standard. Short & cobby with tight coat, decent head & front, & moved well;

2 Szulzycka’s Newvoldemort Al Capone, rangier type with good hard coat, not the most male of heads but used ears well, feet more turned out than 1’s;

3 Anthony’s Charmedautum Willis.

LD (6,1)

1 Lilley & Milling’s Lilmill Nosey Parker, nice sized short level backed dog with ultra short tail, excellent fore & aft with good feet & nicely let down hocks. Good head & lovely free natural movement. Didn’t think he was my winner at first but the more I saw of him the more I liked, to the extent that he ended up with the CC;

2 Purchon’s Lindenka Chesterman, again another exhibit carrying this kennel’s consistent & likeable stamp, therefore with all the attributes I expect, however felt I have seen him putting more in previously;

3 Noyce’s Armadales Son Of A Gun at Maxula.

OD (6,1)

1 Coley’s Ch Kingsview Warwick, a good class with 1 & 2 well deserving of their titles. Both excellent movers so came down to him being more on his toes & having seen 2 looking better. RCC;

2 West’s Ch Tomlyndon Eager Ernest;

3 Pearson’s Winoski Mr Chips.

VD (4)

1 W Mr Chips, both are 7 year olds & I see this is the third time I’ve judged them in the same class. They’ve always had good construction & been excellent movers, although this boy has sometimes shown a tendency to renege, but here he didn’t, so combined with

2 beginning to show more signs of age I ended up reversing their previous placements; 2 Noyce’s Ch Maxula Name Of The Game;

3 Claridge’s Hamish Ivory at Sunniwhite.

MPB (1)

1 Tullis’ Drumsheugh White Diamond, very much a feminine version of her brother therefore as such the same comments apply, & although she showed much more evidence of schooling, she does still need to settle in movement.

PB (3,1)

1 Dale’s Lynnsto Grace And Favour, 10 month old with sweet head & expression, when she uses it, OK for size, balanced with a decent backend & tail & good coat, but too much front leg hair. BP;

2 Ladhams & Rudd’s Juraspirit White Linen, same age with good front & hard coat but not the prettiest of pictures with so few furnishings to hide her faults.

JB (3)

1 Purchon’s Lindenka Apple Krumble, again has the typical attributes of this kennel with a particularly good front & feet, & good backend with short tail. Could use her expression more but won on her lovely free, if fairly slow, movement;

2 Jenkinson’s Highcross Crystal Charm, again this exhibitor has a consistent type which, though different to that of the above, has much to commend & this exhibit & her sister below are typically good examples of it. Preferred her balance & topline to that of her sister;

3 Smith’s Highcross Precious Charm to Lingbeck.

GB (4)

1 Dale’s Lynnsto Issa Star, slightly surprised by the quality of this class & it was a toss up between 1 & 2 but in the end it was her willingness to show her expression with her very feminine head that won out;

2 Fox’s Hillsted Sweet Mystery, just as well made, & moved just as well as 1, & with an excellent jacket;

3 Strand & Hands’ Crinan Carousel.

PGB (5,1)

1 Fryer’s Pride And Precious Sweet White Angel by Hopecharm, really liked this bitch, has quality head, outline & balance, & a bit behind the tail which she used to good effect on the move. Serious contender in the challenge;

2 Bacon’s Reifrandies Furzey at Cabon, not a bitch who stacks well & her trimming didn’t make the best of her head but she has a lovely front with good feet & the correct coat. At her best on the move where she shows her true shape;

3 Lilley & Milling’s Lilmill Bubble And Squeak.

LB (4)

1 Jenkinson’s Highcross Charmer, quality bitch well made throughout with lovely front & harsh white coat, moved true & well;

2 Davison’s Braxquin Forget Me Not, smaller & a bit more feminine with nice short tail but not the construction of 1;

3 Sweetzer’s Ambalasi Pick ‘N’ Mix.

OB (4,1)

1 Hands’ Crinan Calista, as soon as I saw her I thought she’s my type, my size, who is she? They’re never perfect & the go round did highlight one slight issue, although it probably helped her that another here exhibited the same issue to a higher degree. Didn’t disappoint on the table where I was able to see that true expression that tells you so much about the head, & she really didn’t need the speed her handler moved her at to show what a lovely mover she is. CC, BOB;

2 Lancaster’s Clanestar Cloud Chaser, have judged her before & everything I said about her then still applies but she’s lost that bit of sparkle that so often makes the difference at this level;

3 Coley’s Karamynd So What at Kingsview.

VB (2)

1 Foster’s Thozow Sweet Pea, good sized 7 year old, correctly made throughout & in great coat & condition, with her excellent movement couldn’t be denied the RCC, BV;

2 Windram’s Cochansa Dales Pride, same age & again well made & moving & showing very well, just not the finish of 1.
