WEST HIGHLAND WHITE BELFAST 09 Judge(s) MR K HODKINSON DCC HAVASU HERBIE HOT RODD VIA DUNCABURY (MRS M OWENS) West Highland White Terriers The overall quality of the dogs was very pleasing. In some classes some very good dogs were unplaced & I was in the good position of being able to make my decisions on preference of type. Quality in depth which I found in the higher classes can only augur well for the breed. My only general criticism, which is something that can be easily rectified, is that probably 70% of the exhibits before me were overweight. Please remember that the WHWT is supposed to be a working terrier & you should be able to feel their ribs. Being overweight affects quite noticeably both movement & the dog’s outline on the move. PD (1) 1 Cooper’s Brorastar Super Trouper, on his own but a worthy first prize winner anyway. 11 months, excellent type, superb head & expression, level topline, good pigment, great coat, moved very soundly. One with a rosy future. BP. JD (2) 1 Dale’s Lynnsto Barclaycard, impressive outline, good neck & shoulders, lovely head, masculine expression, sound at front & rear, moved with drive; 2 Thomson’s Ashgate McKenzie, very close call on the above, similar in type & structure. Good overall balance, short coupled, nice coat. Just preferred head of 1 but in no way disgraced. PGD (5) 1 Thomson’s Hillcloud Blizzard, lovely type, long neck blending into sloping shoulders, impressive in outline, good tailset, excellent double coat & moved soundly with drive; 2 Taylor’s Birkfell Second Chance, very typical exhibit, very similar in qualities to 1, great head & expression, nice front, strong quarters. Just not moving as freely as winner; 3 Ladhams & Rudd’s Carliol September Song at Juraspirit. LD (3) 1 Owen’s Havasu Herbie Hot Rodd via Duncabury, commanded my attention when he entered the ring. In my notes I wrote ‘type, type, type’ in capital letters, this dog took me back to some of the great dogs I have had the privilege to see in the past 40 years. Lovely showy dog, keen & alert all the time without being hyper or aggressive in temperament, perfect size, stunning outline, great overall balance, lovely neck & shoulders, fantastic front, masculine head, level topline, tail on top, strong hindquarters, moved with drive & presence, very well presented. CC, BOB & G3, should gain his title quickly & have a great future; 2 McLoughlin’s Ley Hey Living Legend, very unlucky to meet 1. Very short coupled, great head & expression, level topline, good coat & presentation, moved well. His day will come; 3 Corri’s Inverglen Banjo. OD (9) A class of great quality, some very good dogs not in the cards. 1 Gordon’s Ch Lamsmor Fitzwritin, quality in all departments, my admiration goes to this exhibitor for his totally immaculate presentation, very confident showman, tail on top all the time, impressive outline, excels in head & strong hindquarters, good angulation, a worthy ch; 2 Abbey’s Kristajen Know It All, lovely type, good head, strong muzzle, good bite, long neck, lovely shoulders & front, level topline, good jacket, moved soundly. Unlucky to meet 1 on such good form; 3 Mallon’s Lymehills Super Trouper at Colla. PB (8) Some very promising puppies here. 1 Mallon’s Colla Fanfare, nearly 11 months, mature for age, great confidence & quite a showgirl, pleasing outline, excellent tailset, good harsh coat, well presented, moved soundly, one to watch for; 2 Jennings’ Lovall A Real Deal at Comdale, very feminine, sweet expression, lovely type, good neck & front, level topline. Not quite so perky as 1 but must have a good future; 3 Thomson’s Hillcloud Drizzle. JB (7) 1 Thomson’s Hillcloud Cirrus Sky, pretty feminine head, level topline, good reach of neck & sound in front, good pigmentation, great harsh coat, moved soundly & with interest, well presented. Will be contending very soon; 2 Burns’ Burneze Milly On Air, lovely type & sound throughout, beautiful head, neck & shoulders, good coat, well presented. Just not quite as mature as winner but can go far; 3 Reidie’s Ashridgeleigh Miss Attitude. PGB (1) 1 Chambers’ CIrcinus Snow Drop Beauty, all alone in this class but could have won a first prize with competition. Overall sound in construction & balanced appearance, lovely head & very good in coat, true movement. Would not like her any larger. LB (6) 1 Lancaster’s Clanestar Careless Affair, the type I was looking for, very feminine, lovely head, in great coat & condition, not overweight like too many exhibits, moved & showed well. Later discovered related to BCC & it shows in so many points, her time will come too. RCC; 2 Owen’s Duncabury Be Mine, all the essentials & unlucky to meet 1. Pleasing head & eyes, lovely outline, strong quarters, moved soundly & covered the ground with ease; 3 Fitzpatrick’s Burneze Samantha. OB (10) The best class of the day, some great exhibits not in top three & could easily change places another day. 1 Abbey’s Kristajen Whats What, oozes type of the old fashioned variety, proper workmanlike but feminine looking terrier, excellent head, lovely neck, well laid shoulders, straight in front, good bone, short coupled & muscular hindquarters, in great coat & condition, moved very soundly. CC, understand it is her 2nd, the 3rd can’t be far away on this form; 2 Jenkins’ Markstown Maid In Secret, lovely type, impressive outline, level topline & good tailset, beautiful head, neat ears & dark eyes, excellent presentation. Unlucky to meet 1 & was close call for RCC; 3 Cooper’s Ch Ashgate Camellia. KEITH HODKINSON
