Windsor 25 Judge

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL WINDSOR 25 Thanks to all the exhibitors for their entries and their patience for what was a long day, made even longer by me virtually writing this critique as we progressed through the classes. So, the following is, more or less, what I wrote at the time with some editing and additions. The Ellchansha kennel came out on top today last time out, nearly three years ago, at SWKA, the CCs went to Ch Elitebulls Challenger and Ch Ellchansha Once Upon a Time. The breeder of the latter only put these two together resulting in a clutch of top winners in 2025 and what a litter this is. My BOB is just one of these Ellchansha Put A Spell On You that spell worked on me for sure! Also, I couldnt resist Once Upon A time for the Bitch RCC either another spell perhaps. Jayne Winrow certainly knows how to show a dog, in this case loose off the lead, giving the judge a lot to see in the various poses that the dog assumes. This handling certainly helps to show off the dogs well it worked today taking the dog CC for her home bred Jayneze Doctor Jimmy at Modlife. The latter affix belongs to the Marsdens who appeared in the ring later on, causing me some confusion (whos this in the ring?). Its incredible the effect winning like this has on otherwise rational people like the Marsdens who were in total shock. Long may that be the case. The overall quality of the dogs is there for all to see in this case pretty damn high quality. Not so long ago, maybe 20 years plus, I recall some high profile judges bemoaning the lack of quality in one case a judge at the North West could only find a couple of typical high-quality dogs in an entry of almost 150 males. For me, that has changed for the better, making for fierce competition (although that has always been the same, regardless of quality). A former mentor of ours Norman Berry, just ask him what he thinks and he will tell you that things have improved dramatically over the ages he should know, he holds all the records for judging and breeding. I think everybody knows what type we, Elaine and I, prefer nothing overdone (or under done either), a blend of bull & terrier, as the old clich goes. Thats where we stand anyway and that is how I arrived at the decisions and placings today. After all these years we both stand down from judging and no more puppies (or will we?!). VD (4,1) All three typical splitting hairs as always 1 Ellchansha Hotshot (Johnson) Super head and front, right amount of bone, strong rear quarters, correct bend of stifle, balanced throughout. 2 Illori Akinlana JW ShCM VW (Rowe & South) Seen this one before a few times and still looks good bodily spot on, short coupled, front no issues. A different look about the head compared to 1st. Great. MPD (6) 1 Jojalane I Drink Wine (Bassford-Lane) What a tidy red dog no exaggerations here; super head and expression. Black mask always adds to the picture, front perfect, level topline on the move, presenting a great profile, back end just right. Id say hes going places. I dont mind a tipple either. BP 2 Eastreet Thundercrack (Turley) Typical of this breeding, front not quite as tidy as 1st. Bodily coming on at this stage, youd have to say. Head, again typical, eye placement/stop with shortish muzzle. PD (5) 1 Jasamarch Tricky Dicky (Lewis) A bit of a handful, super head proportions, just right love the expression. He looks the business, top size, length and breadth matching, looks good front on, he moved well. 2 Niatona Inspector Blake (Birmingham) Very similar to the Minor Puppy winner, so same applies in respect of head, front and body properties. Flashy look about his coat with a lot of white very attractive. JD (6,1) Tough class difficult to sort them out. 1 Kamaristaffs Royal Legend at Moultsstaffs (Len & Moult) Super dog for me, everything in place terrific head and I mean terrific - take it from me without going through all the specifics. Right size for me (in this respect similar to the 1st in the Puppy class), not overdone anywhere moved well. Very sound front with just the right amount of bone, bodily in total balance, strong rear quarters. Ears a bit erratic which tends to detract a bit from his otherwise superb expression. Reminds me of his sire at the same stage. 2 Powerpack Jack in The Box (Funnell) Close decision here, another well balanced dog, a bit smaller than 1st. Has all the right bits depth of brisket, super front. Very clean look about the muzzle tight lips - you cant fault his head, which has all the attributes combining to give such a super expression. YD (7) 1 Rhebelstaff Hunky Dory (Duncan) Yet another top dog here, terrific head and expression, not overdone in any way but an obvious dog nevertheless straight wide-ish front, body super, strong rear quarters. Another one that will have his day. 2 Ellchansha Charm The Devil at Moorstar (Moorcroft) Similar to 1st, slightly more bone if anything, but another super dog going places, well balanced, level topline. Cant fault his head. Cant get much better than these two. ND (5) 1 Bullbrothers The Navigator (Martinez) Worthy winner here, plenty of bone, head shape attractive, overall a tidy dog featuring well sprung rib matched with his depth of brisket. Strong rear quarters. 2 Cotsward Drops of Jupiter (Woodward) A very different type an old fashioned head with respect to depth of stop and eye placement nothing wrong with that. Front Ok, perhaps slightly more bone required. PGD (8,3) 1 Chedanstaff Devil Star (Mitchell) this was the best in this class neat front, enough bone well balanced body. The superior expression on this dog secured first place. 2 Kannechor Guess Hes Back at Gnosall (Terry) Heavier dog big head with deep stop, ears rose, strong rear quarters plenty of bone, deep rib. LD (11) 1 Jayneze Doctor Jimmy at Modlife (Marsden) Top notch dark brindle dog, terrific head muzzle/skull proportions just right (the 2:1 ratio applying here) complemented by his stop and eye placement giving him the perfect expression, complimented by a tight lip. Very lively dog nicely balanced front and rear angles, Looks like he could run for miles. CC 2 Kamaristaffs Royal Rumble for Kalanibull (Oram) Stronger type in head, very attractive, great expression. Although similar to 1st in front and body, maybe this one has a slightly wider front no detriment. Strong rear quarters. OD (10,2) 1 Int/dk/sw/hun Ch Keepastaff Little Benz Dk Jch (Ibsen) Flashy dog, black with white markings, perfect front head not overdone and super expression I was impressed by the tight lip - no fleshiness here. Brisket/rib just right, strong back end. Outstanding dog this one, RCC 2 Kalostaffs Dark Knight (Knight) Very similar to 1st, virtually identical head no exaggerations with this dog at all very well balanced. Gave this dog 1st in Yearling last time out at SWKA in 2022 and hes not changed one bit. Just preferred the overall look of 1st. Special Beginners (9,2) 1 Tyneview Rizzius Lusso (Walbey) Nice type, similar to the Open Dog winner another with tight lip, no exaggerations. Well balanced all over, front and rear. 2 Blossom Queen Bee for Labrastaf (Gardner) Handled by Fayes daughter Lillie this is quite a nice bitch - head showing a pleasing expression. Another with tight lips. VB (5) 1 Ch Ellchansha Once Upon A Time JW (Johnson) Not to be denied first place, still in top form, a real class act, one of my all time great bitches. Its all been said many times so wont repeat here except to say that when I was in the business of selecting photos for publication in the SBT Annual, I was spoilt for choice with this wonderful bitch, never finding a bad one. Well done. RCC 2 Happystaff Could It Be Magic (Buchan) A smaller bitch that is uncannily the spitting image of one of our girls (Stormpike Cleopatra) even down to her size, not that Im biased. Showing sound qualities, both front and rear with the desired bend of stifle. Amazing, couldnt stop looking at her. MPB (1) 1 Bickinstar Ice Glow (Corti) What a terrific puppy, just 6 months old and her first show. Very attractive expression, not overdone, not that youd expect anything else at this age. A sound front in balance with rear quarters. I asked the handler had she heard of Copper Girl no - (I am going back 30 odd years ago) well this young bitch put me in mind of Copper. Remarkably, the sire of Ice Glow is a Trawden bred dog. PB (5,2) 1 Bullbrothers Northen Star (Martinez) Two very similar puppies litter sisters this won on overall quality, she has quite a strong head with the sort of expression we expect these days - eye placement/distinct stop, rose ears etc. She is well balanced throughout with a sound front, preferred the clean cut head on this one. BPB 2 Bullbrothers Black Oil (Martinez) Slightly more of this one, prefer the front on 1st. Deep brisket, strong rear quarters. Nice type and correct muzzle/skull proportions (this latter also applies to 1st). JB (13,1) 1 Geordiestaff Hadaway Pet (Banner) Her qualities are slightly hidden (I suppose the handling was a factor here) but as the class went on, I took quite a liking to this brindle. Well balanced deep well sprung brisket - attractive head in correct proportions. Body balanced with the rest. Plenty of bone. 2 Wellsstaffs Shine A Light (Wells) Very attractive girl, accentuated by her flashy white markings. Straight front (as a die) another with super facial expression, beautiful even good spring of rib, similar balance to 1st. Nothing between these two. YB (4,1) 1 Place Powerpack Euphoria (Funnell) This was 4th place in Junior, a tough class, so no issue with her quality. She has a typical look about her, nothing to complain about, or criticise. Id have to say that the breeder should be commended for retaining the type all these Powerpack Staffords are very similar sound fronts, typical clean heads, balanced bodies, level toplines, perfect mouths well done, keep it up. 2 Ellchansha Hocus Pocus (Pritchard & Rhodes) Top size bitch, more to my liking but her front is a bit of a let down shown very wide and unable to change to give the necessary balance front on. However, her head is outstanding top drawer. Not much wrong with her body and back end, either. NB (8) 1 Kodaknott Rumours (Pearson & Lambert) Striking pied/red another with typical expression/head shape that you always seem to get with this colour combo. Almost top size, bodily very comfortable brisket/ spring of rib. Front and rear angulations match up. Won this class as I preferred the make and shape of this one although the 2nd placed has some very positive virtues. 2 Metalbull Harpoon (Tiernan) I really liked the look of this flashy bitch (white front legs and chest) clean cut head (no lippiness), in fact, just looking at the photo she has a great head with a lovely expression and a sound front, looks great front on very nice. This girl is somewhat smaller than 1st. PGB (17) some class this 1 Pridesdale Satisfy My Soul (Thomas) A red as sound a dog as you can have. Super front, another with a clean cut head, distinct stop. Bodily all in balance strong rear quarters well tucked up. Did well to beat the second placed. 2 Ellchansha Cast A Spell (Johnson) Another from this kennel and the best of the bitches so far (after the veteran) super front, plenty of bone, strong rear quarters spring of rib and drop of brisket. The head usual applies. LB (8,1) 1 Ellchansha Put A Spell On You (Johnson) Yet another top bitch from this Kennel (they keep on coming) and all the previous plaudits apply fantastic head, perhaps one of the best, bodily in tremendous shape! She looks every bit a top winner. What I really liked was the look of her in profile, her streamlined body and good turn of stifle but, in particular, her head when she turned to look at me that expression was difficult to resist beautiful. I can see this latter in my minds eye even now, as I write this critique. 2 Bilrosestaff Shes The One (Rowland) Different style of bitch, this dark brindle, maybe from older time. Skull/muzzle proportions as they should be another with a clean lip and in this case a round eye. Deepest brisket, plenty of bone and back end just right without being overdone. OB (8,1) 1 Place Ch Delacour Sweetest Taboo for Idyllicstaff JW (Shipp) A classy act, this outstanding pied bitch, everything in place to make the perfect dog. From head to rear and all points in between, there is nothing to criticise, even sound on the move. She was certainly in with a shout for the CC 2 Multi/int Ch Noucamp Dont Be Afraid of The Dark (Regeer) Another good-looking dog but cant quite match the overall quality of the 1st. Still, a very attractive expression, no short muzzle here. She has a sound front that always helps well sprung rib/ deep brisket, short coupled to allow a compact look to her. Tec Norton |
