STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE WELSH KC 18 Judge: Mr Martin Grimwood BEST OF BREED : 4790 WALTHAM Mr S & Mrs K Dringshaw Boule De Neige STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE WELSH KC 18 My thanks to my two ring stewards Alexis and Pam for a job very well done. The entry was 85 actual which diminished to 64 when absentees were subtracted. These figures are a serious worry in themselves, but today that was compounded with concerns about any quality in depth. I had polarity in the fact that I think my Best of Breed is a truly excellent example of the breed, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, if I am being honest, I should have witheld places.Teeth have seemingly gone backwards, at least one showing inverted and others that I would consider extremely tight, overshot and level also put in an appearance. Fitness on the whole was abysmal, dips behind the withers were too easy to find along with poor rear movement. This we have always had. More importantly, because it is blatantly ignoring functional type and has seemingly found acceptance are muzzles that have no purposeful length whatsoever, others lacking in depth or width. Nostrils.... some of which are almost closed. Red`s nostrils, at least today, would seem to be far less afflicted than black brindles and photographs seemingly confirm that it is definitely not confined to these shores. We are now seeing at least the second generation of these and it raises the question why are these being awarded top honours and why are they being used to produce more? Very difficult critique to write as having decided not to withhold, I had to place dogs that in some instances challenge my viewpoint on required breed characteristics. It was a challenging days judging, even more at times writing it up. This preamble is not about preferred type, we are now seemingly at a stage where a good dog is wherever you find it ........ It`s about a lack of particular breed characteristics in many exhibits at a UK Championship Show. 1 Gibbin`s Crossguns Fred Astaire. Well built brindle lad with plenty of bone. Strength in skull and muzzle with good head proportions. Muzzle has length and depth with wide open nostrils, good bite, correct stop. Well placed neat ears and dark eyes helping his typical expression. Straight in the forequarters with well padded feet. Showing a good spring of rib and level topline which he kept on the move. Moved well. 2 Haywood`s Ozzie the Enforcer. Strong headed red with good overall proportions, plenty of strength to his muzzle with big wide open nostrils. Good bite, neat ears, eyes dark enough for coat colour. Forequarters have plenty of bone with decent pads. Neck flowed well into his topline with a good spring of rib and very good bend of stifle, moved well 3 Wilson`s & Rodger`s Chuccky`s Black Lad at Azzgem. 1 Thomas` Sunnystone Limited Edition. Balanced brindle dog with a typical head, neat ears carried a shade high. Reasonably tight in the lip with wide open nostrils and good length of muzzle. Excellent bite, big canines and pinking shear pre molars. Dark eye, reasonable expression good cheek bumps, good head proportions. Plenty of bone in his forequarters with well padded feet, brisket to elbow, good rear angulation get his pads where they should be, still very much a baby moved very well. 1 Rhodes & Pritchard`s Taraiel Reaper at Teracota. 10 month old black brindle and white puppy, mature for a pup with good levels of fitness that belie his age. Typical head with a strong purposeful muzzle, width and depth, housing a good bite. Wide open nostrils. Balances with correct stop to skull which then matches his body. Correct width to the front of him with ample bone. Brisket to elbow with decent spring of rib, light in the loin, level topline, tight coat. Already showing decent body definition from above and tuck up from the side. Moved well. I`m sure theres more to come of him. Best Puppy & Dog RCC. 2 Funnel & Hitchens` Powerpack Kilgobnet. Liked this dog a lot, same age as 1, not as far down the road in development but I feel he has equal potential. Scored well in head shape, very much to my liking. Again good strength to his muzzle in width and purposeful length, wide open nostrils. Tight and clean in the lip. Dark eye and neat ears help his typical expression. Straight in the forequarters with ample bone, brisket to elbow, rib and body definition not as mature as 1 but the start is there. Good angulations at the rear and he moved well. 3 Hemstock`s & Sanjesh`s Blazen Staffs Over the Top Jolihem. Red dog with white front, strong headed, with good muzzle, housing good bite, eyes dark enough for coat colour with reasonably neat ears. Decent angulations, ample bone, ribs well back, moved well. 1 O`Connor`s Samtan Crime Fighter by Chezatree Topsized powerful red lad with a white chest. Typical expression with neat ears and dark eyes. Open nostrils with a strength of muzzle, possibly a shade more stop than is my ideal but not too overly done. Good bite, well developed cheek bumps. Obvious underjaw. Good width across his chest, Straight in the forequarters with plenty of bone, brisket to elbow, good spring of rib. Well muscled rear, well angulated with good body definition. Moved ok. 1 Heron`s Dilirystaff All the Rage. Very Typical red and white with good head shape, correct stop and showing good strength to his muzzle with depth and width. Reasonably neat ears and acceptably dark eyes provides good typical expression. He stands straight in the forequarters on well padded feet with brisket to elbow. Reasonable levels of fitness but for me he needs more. Neck flows well into withers and on into topline. He ribs well back with good angulations to the rear. At times he appeared to paddle a bit in front and moved a shade close behind. 2 Thisby`s Taurinstaff Fist of Fury. Black brindle dog that seemed very heavy when I lifted at his front. Would prefer a much cleaner muzzle and skull. His lips and nostrils are a concern of mine for the breed. Decent bite and neat well placed ears. Strong in the quarters showing plenty of bone, decent lift, with brisket to elbow, a good spring of rib and decent body definition. He stands a shade over angulated but moved reasonably well. 1 Funnel & Hitchens` Powerpack Kilgobnet. 2 Thomas` Sunnystone Limited Edition. 1 Garavaglia`s Firecross Amusing Sunrise. Extremely attractive typical pied, bang standard and scores very well with his excellent expression. Good head with correct stop, a muzzle of correct length and depth with wide open nostrils. Correct proportion of head above top of muzzle plane and neat well placed ears and dark eyes. Head balances to body. Plenty of bone in strong straight forequarters showing good width to his front. His neck flows well through the withers and on into topline with his brisket dropping to elbow. He has reasonable levels of fitness, a good spring of rib, with good body definition being light in the loin. Would prefer a shade more angulation in the rear and this could be seen in his movement. Very nice dog though, liked him a lot. 1 Lee`s Molru Throwing Shapes. Black brindle dog with a reasonable length to his muzzle, though I`d personally prefer a tad more. Wide open nostrils and a good expression helped by neat well placed ears and dark eyes. Good planes on skull and muzzle and reasonably tight in the lip. Short strong neck with ample bone in his forequarters, he ribs well back and has good rear angulation. He could be fitter and this would hopefully improve body definition. Well let down at the hocks and he moved reasonably well, but carries his tail a shade high. 2nd Hopkins` Trufflestaff Papinashuash. Dark brindle lad who`s heavier than my ideal. I found him fleshy around the muzzle and carrying wrinkle at the set on and appearing shorter in the muzzle than I would prefer. He has a strong underjaw though with nostrils reasonably open and acceptably neat ears. His levels of fitness are much better than 1 and also he carries his tail better. Well sprung ribs that carry back and a bit more lift would enhance balance for me. He has well developed hindquarters, with hocks well let down and he moved well when he got going. 3 Evans` Hammystaff Fireblade. Red dog black mask more of an old fashioned type of head than 1 & 2. plenty of bone throughout, big canines excellent bite, eyes could be darker and ears tidier, brisket to elbow moved reasonably well 1 Jordan`s Dazmarnic Know Wot I Mean. Red dog who scores well for me in body. He has a good spring of rib and being light in the loin, shows good body definition with acceptable muscle development and levels of fitness. He has a short close coat with good rear angulations, well let down at the hocks. A well made dog with good bone, straight strong forequarters and a very good mover. Wide open nostrils with a good bite in a muzzle that has depth, but for me, not enough length. That then terminates at set on with a stop, that is a bit more than my idea of distinct. Reasonably dark eye and acceptably tight in the lip. 2 Harris` Caymenstaffs Big Ben. Well named big strong black brindle. A big lad all over with good head shape and expression with dark eyes and neat well placed ears, but personally I would prefer his nostrils to be more open than they appear. He stands a shade narrow in front with his brisket to elbow, he ribs well back but is lacking in body definition from above, more attractive in profile. He`s well off for bone with a decent spring to rib, soft to the touch and a shade narrow in the rear. Fitness seems to be lacking but he has developed a half decent second thigh, he moved out well. 3 Mitchell & Aston`s Our Little Cracker Strong and topsize blue brindle, He has a strong muzzle decent cheek bumps and a goood bite. Plenty of bone in his straight forequarters, Strong bodied dog with good spring of rib, correct rear angulation, he moved ok but lacked animation today. 1 Breckell`s Ch Chiswelstaff Lets Dance. Good looking standard, typical dog of his day with good head and expression though I would prefer a shade more length to his muzzle for ideal. Stop is distinct without being overdone, good head proportions and shape. Typical expression with neat well placed ears, dark eyes and being tight in the lip. Ample strong bone in the forequarters with plenty of width to his front and brisket dropping to elbow. Neck flows well into his topline, good spring of rib and lightness of loin give acceptable body definition. He has well muscled hindquarters showing good width and development of the thigh with second thigh evident. Good rear angulation with hocks well let down, muscular all over, he moves purposefully exhibiting drive. Dog CC. 2 Hirst & Bibby`s Taraiel Buster Rhymes. Brindle dog with a bit less of him than the winner. He has good head shape, an ample muzzle with open nostrils, a good depth of rear skull, reasonably dark eyes and is clean in the lip. Strong in the forequarters, brisket to elbow with his neck flowing well into withers and topline. I would prefer a shade more rear angulation but he moved reasonably well. 3 Marshallsay`s Fergustaff Jack Frost. Fawn dog showing very good type with excellent expression and good head proportions, dark round eyes and neat ears. Tight in the lip, his muzzle proportions are better than 1 & 2 for me, a good bite in that muzzle with wide open nostrils. He is straight in the forequarters and his neck flows well into his shoulders and on into his topline, he`s ribbed well back with good decent angulation in the rear. Today he let himself down by his movement, slightly overstepping in profile and showing a slight twist when moving away to avoid contact with front pads. 1 Wilson & Rodgers` Ozzies Red Rascal. Red bitch with an excellent foreface, wide open nostrils, a good length to her muzzle and is tight and clean in the lip. Her ears could be a tad smaller but with her dark eye and correct stop, I thought she had a excellent expression. She has a decent bite, strong neck, an old fashioned type of bitch in head, with plenty of depth in the skull but not being overdone. She ribs well back showing a good springy ribcage, very acceptable body definition with decent musculature. She has good rear angulation and is well let down in the hocks. She maintained her level topline when she moved. Best Veteran. 2 Hirst & Bibby`s Taraiel Ciara. Black brindle bitch with a more modern expression than 1, a decent expression with dark eyes and neat ears. She is straight and strong in the forequarters, her neck flows well into topline showing decent levels of fitness and a good spring of rib. She is well let down at hock with a second thigh well developed and she moved ok. 3 Coble`s Surestaff Valentina. Black brindle bitch with good expression, correct stop with good length to her muzzle and reasonable bone throughout, decent spring of rib and reasonably light in the loin moved well 1 Yates` Ellchansa Happy Ever After. A very typical Black brindle baby. Wide open nostrils and tight in the lip, strong muzzle. Good correct stop, neat ears that she`ll grow into, great expression dark eye plenty of bone good angulations moved well. Coat a shade coarse at this stage but very promising 2 Evans` Sleetmoor Young at Heart. Red bitch with a very nice head, wide open nostrils, dark nails and plenty of bone canines were a shade tight at the moment and preferred the rear angulation that was shown on first. 3 Hopkins` Windstaff Blackberry at Trufflestaff. Black brindle with a lot to like about her, plenty of muzzle with wide open nostrils, dark eyes, good expression. Plenty of bone, her body matches up to head. At present she dips slightly after her withers and hopefully this will improve upon maturity. Moved reasonably well. 1 Marshallsay`s Fergustaff Tudor Queen. Very nice typical bitch with typical expression. Dark eyes and neat tidy ears. She has a strong underjaw, open nostrils, a good length of muzzle with depth that leads to her ample stop and correct head planes. Good depth to rear of skull. Plenty of bone in her forequarters, neck flowed well into shoulders, decent spring of rib for a puppy and showing very acceptable body definition, being light in the loin. Her hocks are well let down coupled with good angulation and she moved reasonably well 2 Funnel`s Powerpack Alura Finvarra. Black brindle that I would like a shade more strength to the muzzle but that might come later. She has dark eyes, tidy ears and is clean in the lip. Possibly showing a shade less bone than 1 and not as far down the line in maturity. Neck flows through withers to topline. She ribs well back with very decent rear angulation, and again moved reasonably well. 3 Davis` Sharnara amazing Grace. Attractive brindle bitch with more width to muzzle required for me, not overdone in the stop, ears a shade untidy at the moment. She has open nostrils and is tight in the lip, brisket to elbow and her neck flows reasonably well into withers, good rear angulation. 1 Kirk`s Jodenzac Fireball Red. Red bitch who scores highly with her skull and muzzle and expression. There is a good length and depth to her muzzle that starts with wide open nostrils, a good strong wide underjaw and a good bite showing strong well angulated canines, placed wide. Clean set on with a decent stop, not being overdone. Good cheekbumps, dark eyes and neat well placed ears. Excellent expression and good depth of skull. She is straight and strong in the forequarters with plenty of bone and her neck flows well through withers into topline. Good angulation to her rear quarters and she moved well. The bitch is carrying far too much weight, she has a good spring of rib but needs to excercise and muscle up from where she is at the present. Inside here I think is a very nice bitch. Bitch RCC. 2 Gardner`s Ballindonna Fabuluss for Labrastaff. Black brindle. A very nice girl who has a very nice headshape and expression with dark eyes and reasonably neat ears. A strong muzzle with correct length housing a good bite. She shows a good spring of rib and a level topline, I would prefer better levels of fitness in junior and she just would not walk today to her advantage at all, keeping her head down despite umpteen chances. 3 Hands & Freeman`s Siriustaff Heart of Glass. Black brindle bitch with a bit more stop, more lip and acceptable nostrils but ideally would be more open. She has neat ears shown a shade high, reasonable bone but a tad more would be to her advantage. She has a level topline, a good spring of rib and she tucks up well. Decent angulation with vertical rear pasterns and hocks well let down, moving reasonably well. 1 Waltham & Dringshaw`s Dringshaw Boule de Neige. A very typical white bitch with an excellent expression, dark eyes and neat ears correctly placed. These eye shapes to me are what is correct. Clean purposeful muzzle with length and depth, wide open nostrils and a good bite. Set on was clean with correct amount of stop. Good depth to rear of skull with evident cheekbumps. Plenty of bone in her forequarters with a brisket to elbow. She has a strong neck that flowed seemlessly through her withers into her level topline, good spring of rib and a lightness of loin provided good body definition. Good width to pelvis with well developed first and second thigh. Correct rear angulation get her back pads positioned where they should be and moved her effortlessly. This bitch never put a foot wrong today, for me, in type, characteristics and manner, she was never completely still, either here or in the terrier ring. Always alert to her surroundings and the fact that she was mostly on two legs when my winning bitches walked around the ring only added to my already very high opinion of her. Quite simply, I wish she were mine. Bitch CC & BOB 2 Lee`s Berrystock Enigma Black. Slightly smaller black brindle with a good head and very typical expression helped by good stop, neat well placed ears and dark eyes. Muzzle has length and depth with good nostrils and there is complementary depth to the rear of her skull. She is straight and strong in the forequarters with ample bone and well up on her pasterns, brisket to elbow. Reasonable levels of fitness but more would enhance. A decent spring of rib, reasonably light in the loin and good rear angulation. She moved well. 3 Tighe`s Tegumen Little Miss Sparkle. 1 Kirk`s Jodenzac Fireball Red. Won this with a bit to spare. 2 Evans` Sleetmoor Twice as Hot. Leaning towards the terrier, she has a good head with dark eyes and decent ears. Reasonable length of muzzle, tight in the lip with wide open nostrils. Bit over narrow in the front and maybe a tad more bone would enhance for me. Her neck flows very well into her shoulders with a reasonable spring of rib, carried well back, but there was no body definition through loin and pelvis. Needs also to be more animated. 3 Hopkins` Windstaff Blackberry at Trufflestaff. 1 Beesley`s Maxstaff Miss Whiz A very nice red bitch with black mask and wide open nostrils. She has a good expression dark eye and reasonably tidy ears. Good stop, not overdone. She has good length and depth to her muzzle, is tight in the lip and with a strong underjaw. Ample bone in the forequarters and well up on her pasterns. Her neck flows well into topline, she shows a good spring of rib carried back with a tight coat and body definition that is good. Vertical hocks positioned correctly with good rear angulation and very acceptable musculature on her hind quarters. 2 Mitchell & Aston`s Blooming Lovely. Brindle bitch not as much bone as 1 and without the strength through the muzzle, though her muzzle matches skull, has good length with round open nostrils. She has dark eyes but her ears might be a tad tidier. Tight in the lip with a decent underjaw. Straight in the forequarters with possibly just enough bone. Her neck flowed well into shoulders and on to her level topline which she kept on the move, well angulated rearquarters, a good spring of rib with reasonable body definition, more might enhance further. 3 Dunford & Hall`s Tammy Star. Good head on this girl, kind of a big old fashioned bitch, she is without question, a big girl. Wide open nostrils on a strong purposeful muzzle of good length and depth housing a good bite. Her ears arnt her fortune being a bit heavy but possibly nit picking here, ample cheek bumps and a good stop. Plenty of bone and balanced with a good spring of rib and level topline, strong muscular neck fitness levels could be improved, good width across the pelvis and decent rear angulation. 1 Willowstaff Double Top at Sleetmoor. Red bitch with a good length to her muzzle and wide open nostrils. Strong underjaw and tight and clean in the lip. Good stop gives her muzzle proportional depth to her rear skull. Typical expression with reasonably dark eyes and neat well placed ears. She stands straight in the forequarters but a shade down on pasterns, neck flows well into topline, vertical hocks and she moved well. Bitch is soft, lacking musculature, poor fitness levels and lacking body definition. 2 Funnel`s Powerpack Cherokee. Black brindle with a good length to muzzle with wide open nostrils, good head with neat ears and dark eyes aiding her typical expression. Plenty of bone, her neck flows well into shoulders, decent spring of rib with good rear angulation and reasonable muscle tone and fitness but preferred the movement of 1. 3 Fox`s Jolihem Honeybunch. Strong headed compact bitch with a decent length of muzzle and wide open nostrils Reasonably dark eye, heavy ears, strong underjaw plenty of bone good spring of rib, reasonable rear angulation dips behind withers and this shows in movement. 1 Butler`s Joemikeste Play the Game. Top notch typical black brindle with very good head and expression. She has wide open nostrils, dark eyes, neat ears, a good length to her muzzle which also had depth and is in proportion to her rear skull with a good stop. She stands straight in the forequarters with good ample bone, very good levels of fitness, missing on so many today. Her back divides with muscles running the length of her ribs, brisket to elbow, good rear angulations and a good width to her pelvis, well let down in the hocks, she moved very well. Liked her very much but for one point, she pushed RCC very very close 2 Heron`s Dilirystaff Devious Spirit. Red pied with a strong purposeful head and excellent expression. She has wide open nostrils and strong clean muzzle. Excellent bone throughout with plenty of width across her chest and strong straight forequarters. She has a good spring of rib and good angulation on hindquarters that again have width. Could be a lot fitter and that would improve body definition, well let down at hocks with good angulation. Strong girl but not as tidy in movement today as 1. 3 Marshallsay`s Fergustaff Valkerie Queen. Red fawn let down by carrying too much weight good stop dark eye would possibly wish more strength to her muzzle reasonable expression, good width to the front of her with a good spring of rib carried back, good rear angulation. 1 Stanway`s Stormfire Crack the Code at Waystaff Pretty pied bitch decent head, muzzle balances to skull, open nostrils with a good length to it, but personally I`d prefer more depth to this muzzle. Ample stop. Straight in the forequarters and up on her pasterns, neck flows well into topline would prefer greater levels of fitness but a decent spring of rib, good bend of stifle with hocks that are well let down with vertical pasterns. Nothing overdone, ample everywhere and moved reasonably well.
