STAFFORDSHIRE BULL WELSH KENNEL CLUB 13 Judge: Mr D Levy BEST OF BREED : 5241 HEDGES, Mr A & BOGOVCIC Mrs C Suurisuun Boppinghams Birulai STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE WKC 13 Staffordshire Bull Terriers I appreciate your entries. I did say to Val on the way to the show that all the decent reds & pieds would be there. Sure enough, perhaps as many as 50 per cent of the exhibits were colours other than dark brindle which is far from the norm these days. Don’t get me wrong, I was very pleased to see them but why did so many brindle owners stay away? Of course I have awarded CCs & places to non-brindles in the past, but if the best brindles don’t turn up then the prophecy becomes self-fulfilling. Ken Davies once said to me that if all the Standard sized dogs stayed away whenever he judged, then he was bound to perpetuate the theory that he only placed oversized Staffords. Don’t just listen to the conspiracy theorists, the whole idea of showing & judging is for you to get someone’s opinion of how well your Stafford fits their interpretation of the Standard. A couple of problems which don’t seem to be getting much challenge were very noticeable in several exhibits. I will accept that temperament, balance, mouth, head, movement, type & many other characteristics are more critical & rightly more widely discussed, but if the Stafford is to remain a healthy traditional dog then lesser areas must also be monitored. The gay tail has long been overlooked as a fault in the breed, but it is clearly required to be "carried rather low”. It was noticeable that very few exhibits kept their tail "low” when moving & in some cases even when being stood in show posture. The other fault I’d not seen before but was present on several exhibits is a very large & heavily padded foot so that the toes actually point upwards. The nails had clearly been cut in all cases so the owners are aware of the problem. Please be aware of these "lesser” points when choosing stud dogs. MPD 1, BP, Membury’s Mitzstaff Union Jack, 8 months brindle, well balanced & typical size for his age, well shaped skull, neat ears, tidy lips & pronounced cheek muscles, a wide set front, adequate rib & brisket for age & a level topline.
