WELKS 23 Judge
|
STAFFORDSHIRE BULL WELKS 23 Judge: Mrs Veronica Wardleworth Firstly, thank you to the Officers and Committee of WELKS for their kind invitation to judge at the above show. And to my two lovely stewards who looked after me so well. My appointment was left over from the Covid era, so it has been a long time coming. During that time a lot has happened to us all, and my involvement with our wonderful breed has been somewhat sketchy. To this end I felt it was a wonderful challenge to judge completely unknown and unseen dogs. Thank you to all of those who entered and accepted my decisions in a very sportsman like manner. So, how does the breed look to me after a 3 plus year absence. I was looking for a balanced Stafford, clean in outline and nothing overdone. A Stafford should be fit for purpose, almost with a glint in their eyes and ready to take on the world. Mouths on the whole were alright and some lovely large clean white canines. There were the odd misaligned teeth, nothing of great consequence, just something to be aware of if you are planning to use these animals in your breeding programme. A lot of discussion recently has centred about nares, so I made it a point to look at each animal closely. Generally they are of an acceptable size and capable of fulfilling their function. Yes a few were on the small side and this was taken into account when judging. Movement on the whole was good, plenty of drive fore and aft. Tails were of a mixed type, still a few high tails. One thing I did notice was lack of rib and a leaning to slab sides in some animals, both young and mature, something to be very aware of, as the Stafford should have strong ribs with great lung capacity. Fitness is always an issue, with entry fees so very expensive surely a fit animal is absolutely essential. Having said all that I had many quality animals to assess and was so pleased to see my Bitch CC, a bitch of immense quality go Group 4, many congratulations. 1 Rowe & South’s Illori Akinlana JW ShCM What a cracking way to start my day. Black Brindle dog, full of Stafford attitude and up on his toes the whole time. As fit as a flea, which I loved. Quality Black Brindle dog, so balanced throughout, a lovely head shape, darkest of eyes giving a wicked expression. A touch of grey on his muzzle which is allowed at aged 9. Correct Front, tight feet, short coupled with ample rib flowing to a balanced back end. A credit to his owner, and thank you so much for bringing him. Super boy. 2 Dean’s Kylestaff Muddy Water JW ShCM VW. Another 9 year black brindle dog, in fine condition, stronger in the head, with correct front, tight feet, all flowing into ample rib, correct coupling and a neat back end, top line a little erratic more pronounced on standing than moving. He did not quite have the fitness and zing of the class winner, but a lovely veteran nevertheless. Thank you for bringing him. 3 Devlin’s Tightlines Dusty’s Trail. 1 Martinez, Bull Brothers Burning Gold. A real baby at his first show. He stood alone in his class and seemed totally unfazed by it all. A nice colour red little boy, with a pleasing head shape, neat ears and dark eyes. Straight front. He obviously has a lot growing to do as there is still a lot of knuckle. I wish you well for the future. 1 Jones, Kamaristaffs Royal Rumour. Stood alone this smart black brindle puppy. 10 months old and maturing nicely. I particularly liked his overall balance. Plenty of bone, nice head shape, dark eyes and good ears. Ample depth of chest at this stage, with nice overall balance behind the shoulders. Condition good for his age and a lovely coat texture. A nice young lad who should mature into a lovely dog. He was my BP, and certainly was a credit to the breed in the Terrier Puppy Group. 1 Page, Elitebull Mischief at Bellastaff JW Made my heart rate increase when I saw this lad. Lovely strong masculine head, with round dark eyes and super ears. Good depth of brisket and tight feet. Behind the shoulders his top line was perfect, lovely tuck up all flowing into a nicely angled bend of stifle. In good nick. A really promising balanced youngster who did enough for me today to give him the RCC, well done and good luck. 2 Hinsley, Earthquake Staffs Wear It Well At Tigerbull (Imp Esp) A very striking predominately white dog with red markings, very smart boy. Very balanced overall, lovely head shape, darkest of really round eyes, neatest of ears. Not quite as much lift as my winner. Really good front, ample rib, short coupled all flowing to a strong back end. I just preferred my winner when stood. Totally at one with his owner, and I have to mention his fitness, first class. I know this dog will have a great show career. 3 Lloyd-Williams, Cwmhâf Celtic Quest. 1 Arntzen, Catstaff’s Soul Rebel. Handsome black brindle dog, with a lot of lovely virtues. Best of Head Shapes, clean as a whistle, dark eyes and neat ears. Nice flow of neck into correct shoulders, ample rib. Feet just need a bit more work to really tighten them, Good back end, but could do with being a tad fitter to really extoll his virtues. At this stage of development a lovely dog. 2 Butler, Alport On Tour At Enternalco. Another very smart black brindle dog. Lovely head shape, dark eyes and neat ears which when he used them made him look terrific. Clean as a whistle in the head department, nice brisket front and tight feet. Stood four square, correctly coupled all flowing to a good back end. I am sure this boy will make his mark, but today was pipped by a dog who just showed himself a bit more, another show places could so easily be reversed. I liked both these two dogs. 3 Ibsen, Keepastaff Little Benz. 1 Mayer’s Maynestaff Smooth Criminal. Decent enough black brindle dog, A lot of virtues, neat head and ears, but not quite as clean about the muzzle that I prefer, Correct front, a little light in the rib, but won this class by his overall balance. 2 Wilson, Northstaff Nightmare. I liked this dog a lot, perhaps he could hold his own in a higher class. Black brindle with a white chest, lovely expression, tidy ears and clean headed. Stood four square. Great front, adequate rib and maturing back end. Another day the other way round for the first two in this class. 3 McEneaney’s, Briganah Handsome Devil. 1 Summer’s Tillcarr Fire Dynamic at Warriorstaff. Black brindle dog with strong head shape, correct ears and dark eye. He presented a pleasing and correct overall picture, although I would like to see tighter feet and more lift on his pasterns. Short coupled with a correct bend of stifle. I would recommend a bit of a fitness regime as he is a decent dog, it would make all the difference. I preferred his balance to my second place dog. 2 Devlin’s Tightlines Dusty’s Trail. This red dog was 3rd in a good veteran class. A lovely strong but well defined head with a touch of grey as belies his years. A bit more of him all over than the winner, but very balanced Stafford nevertheless. Super tight feet. Good overall body shape and good strong back end. Nice level topline which he kept on the move. 1 Boggins & Burton, Luthais Loch Tay JW. Today was his day, smart brindle dog, who appealed to me. Lovely head shape, correct ears, enough strength of muzzle and a dark round eye. Loved his coat colour and overall condition, super. Behind the collar is where he excelled to me. Lovely rib, and super tuck up and flowing into a very well muscled back end. Best of feet, I think the word that springs to mind, that this dog is an unexaggerated standard sized Stafford. His handler showed him to perfection, and having considered all my class winners, I just kept coming back to him. My CC winner today, Here’s to the other two, and the very best of luck with him. Well Done. 2 Hands & Wyatt, Skyestaff Winter Soldier JW. Another really nice dog who gave me lots to think about. Black brindle, bigger than my class winner. Beautiful head shape clean as a whistle and lovely ears. Super front with nice width and really tight feet. Ample rib and correct coupling and a good strong back end. Another day another show who knows. Really well handled. Thank you. 3 Jefferson, Alport Bold Ruler. 1 Arntzen & Manito, Ch Catstaff’s Used To. What a class, wonderful champions entered all worthy of their titles. However, this lad just did it for me. A Beautiful balanced top sized dog with fabulous bone and presence. Clean in the head with a super expression and ears. Enough strength of muzzle, all flowing to a first class front and tight feet. Great rib, ample tuck up and a really well defined back end. His conditioning was wonderful, his handler certainly knew how to bring out the very best of him, I can fully understand why he is a champion and a very worthy one at that. His breeder seems to have the knack of producing classy animals. I did look at him long and hard in the line up, but kept going back to the limit winner. Thank you for bringing him. 2 Norton’s Ch Tariel Stormzy of Tirkkurilan. Firstly I am sure that everyone who was at Welks will join me in wishing the handler of this dog a speedy recovery from her very nasty fall in the dog ring, which resulted in her being hospitalized and having a subsequent operation. Now to the dog. A super dog, who can be a real handful for his handler/owner. The best of head shapes, super expression and dark eye. Very reluctant to use his ears today, but I could see enough. Wonderful body shape a really mature dog in prime condition. Super rib, great tuck up and fabulous back end. A pleasure to go over and thank you so much for bringing him. 3 Thomas & Griffiths, Ch Gazstaff’s Black Magic. I am writing a 3rd place critique for this dog. I judged him and gave him a RCC in minor puppy. Well today I had the pleasure of going over the finished article. A lovely mature Stafford with all the attributes that make a dog a champion. In super condition, lovely head shape, such small neat ears, and lovely dark eyes. Proportioned body shape, good front, lovely feet all flowing to ample rib and back end. I am so pleased he became a Champion well deserved. 1 Ibsen, Keepastaff The Sky Keeper. A real black brindle baby of seven months, with a nice head shape for her age, compact body and correct bend of stifle. At this stage she is very loose as she should be, and I feel she will grow into a decent bitch. Her feet could be tighter but this will come with increased exercise as she grows. A little sweetheart. 2 Harris, Annemstaffs Queen Bee. Another raw baby, with a lovely head shape, her ears need to settle. Round dark eye, and an overall good body shape, short compact body, with plenty of rib at this stage. She was a bigger pup than my class winner, but presented a pleasing picture. 3 Walker, Torkavi The Last Dragon at Teshleystaff. 1 Jones, Kamaristaffs Royal Velvet. Loved this little girl, Beautiful head shape, darkest of eyes. I noticed a very good front with super tight feet. Her overall shape was just as puppy should be at 10 months. Compact body and correct back end. She was pipped for BP by her litter brother by virtue of his maturity. Good luck with both of them. 2 Plumstead, Kamaristaffs Royal Gem. Litter sister to the class winner. Just a bit more of her all over, super head shape so clean with lovely round dark eyes, very similar to the winner with very similar attributes, with a tad more lift at this stage. Lovely tight feet noted. Both lovely girls. Should both have good showing careers. 3 Jefferson, Alport No Surrender. 1 Hands, Badman & Freeman, Skystaff Dressed to Impress. What a little cracker, with super ring presence. Just loved her, super overall picture, loveliest of head shape with dark eyes, neatest of ears. Good front, and chest all flowing into a well proportioned body. Correct back end and bend of stifle. Enough lift, and tuck up at this stage. I predict a very successful show career for this young lady, and was very pleased to award her the RCC, good luck. 2 Thomas & Griffiths, Skyestaff Truest Desire for Gazstaff. Litter sister to the class winner and another sister was third, what a litter to be proud of, well done, they could all swap places on another day. This young lady also had a beautiful head shape, very clean, and dark round eyes. Good front for her age and feet that as she matures will tighten up. Overall good body shape with a good backend. With maturity she will be another lovely bitch. Well done to the breeder. 3 Sandford, Skyestaff Unspoken. All the attributes of her litter sisters another day another result. 1 Quinn, Callastaff Five Years at Bowferry JW. Smart Black brindle bitch with a lot to like. Good head shape, nice dark eye and a clean muzzle. She had nice lift, and a good back end. I would have preferred slightly neater shoulder placement, but her overall quality won her this class. 2 Foulkes, Bullbrothers Wildflower. Attractive red and white bitch with a pleasing head shape, dark eyes and well set ears. A little tighter in the front than I prefer and her feet need tightening up which comes with road work, but she was in very good nick behind the shoulders, with correct tuck up and a good back end. Nice to judge a red and white. 1 Reeger, Noucamp Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark EJW’22 NJK BJK W’22 HCW’22 BSG’22 (Atc AY248251KC) Black brindle bitch of standard size. She was VHC in the yearling class. Nice head shape with a good dark eye and correct front. Short coupled and an acceptable back end. Presented in good order. She won this class on her maturity, close decision. 2 Thomas & Griffiths, Sykestaff Truest Desire For Gazstaff. Black brindle bitch just in junior where she was 2nd. She lost out on maturity. All the same comments apply from her critique. 3 Sandford, Skyestaff Unspoken. 1 Mayers’ Maynestaff The Girl Is Mine. A very neat and compact black brindle bitch with a lot to like. Nice clean head, darkest of eyes and neat ears. She is short coupled with a decent back end. I noted lovely feet and a good front. Perhaps she could go up a class? 2 Thomas & Griffiths, Skyestaff Trust Desire for Gazstaff, see junior. 3 Walker, Maxstaff Miss Vivienne At Teshleystaff. 1 Turner, On The hill Two At Tidestaff. Beautifully coloured brindle bitch of standard size, correct head shape and neat ears. White flash on her chest, and she had a good front. Where this bitch scored was in her movement, a top line to die for on which you could put a tray when moving. She won this class by virtue of her soundness. 2 Martinez, Bullbrothers Mist Mydnight. Black brindle dog with lovely broad skull and neat ears, but not as clean in the muzzle as I like. She was a bit longer in the body but possesses a good backend. She could do with being fitter, to enhance her overall appearance. 3 Mason, Magellason Diamond Diva. 1 Arntzen, Catstaff’s If I had a Heart. Enter the star of the day, what a cracker. Balance and class were my first impressions. Black brindle bitch who just dared me not to look. Beautiful head shape with a fabulous expression, with the neatest of ears which she used. Super front and lovely tight feet. All this flowed into a lovely shaped body with tuck up and strong backend. I just loved her attitude and showmanship. There were some lovely bitches in this class but she just did it for me, and I was delighted to award her the CC, her 2nd, that 3rd won’t be long I am sure. To crown it all she won a well deserved Group 4 in the Terrier Group. Well Done. 2 Roberts, Briganah Don’t Stop Me Now. Another quality bitch slightly more of her all over. Presented in the fittest condition, lovely head shape, clean, with correct set ears. Strong front, ok feet. Lovely definition in her body, and really strong muscled hams, another lovely girl so unlucky to meet the winner today. I liked her a lot too. 3 Hands & Freeman, Skyestaff She Conquered JW. 1 Hirst & Bibby, Ch Taraiel Dua Lipa. What a cracker of a bitch, so easy to see why she is a Champion, Class. Tight as a drum all over, the best of head shapes clean as a whistle and neat expressive ears. Correct front and lovely rib definition and a good strong backend. Yet another super champion from a well known kennel. Well done. 2 Parker, Ch Elitebull Mojito at Nettleworth. Another super bitch so worthy of her title, great head shape, with the darkest of eyes and neat correctly set ears. Super front, and tight feet. Fabulous condition, her coat really shone. Great rib definition, short coupled all flowing to a good strong back end. A lovely girl. Unlucky to meet one today. 3 Johnson, Tillcarr Kissed By Fire. Well my critique is finished, after a lovely day. I had some lovely animals to judge and thank you all so much. I wish you all the best of luck for the future.
