STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE THREE COUNTIES 13

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

On a rather dull and cool morning, I took the decision to judge outside, having recently exhibited on the indoor surface myself, I knew it to be slippery for both exhibit and exhibitor. The grass in the ring was mown that morning and was short enough to not make exhibits look unbalanced in any way, judging in natural light is always preferential also. Overall I was generally pleased with both my final line ups, as always I try to find an exhibit that, to me, is sound, functional, free of exaggeration and importantly, carrying good type. I found two with badly inverted canines and one or two others that the lower canines were tight into the upper gum, but I have not mentioned mouths in my critique as my place winners all had correct dentition. As always when judging compromises have to be made here and there. One or two really top class exhibits just failed to be at the races today as well as a couple who look to have maybe been to one show too many of late. It was with a heavy heart I chose to withhold a first place in one class, I did not make the decision lightly and certainly not to make a point or just because I could. There was a distinct lack of virtue in both type and constructional value and a first place at a championship show was, in my opinion at least not warranted. I thank all who spent their considerable money and time to come and exhibit under me, and as one last aside, I must mention the really sporting ringside atmosphere with generous applause for all place winners, it certainly made for a lovely day especially when the sun did finally arrive!.

MPD 5 (2a)

1.Fulford’s Elitebulls Heartbreaker for Regalbull. Blk brdl a nice compact pup with plenty going for him, nice head not overdone, coal black eye and neat ear present an expression of type. Straight in front, correct angulation when viewed in profile and on the move, a tad more rib would complete the picture when he matures.

2.Carter’s Seastaff Poseidon, Red/wht of a heavier type all round than 1, again a head of strength without being too much, neat ears when he uses them, liked his pigmentation, a decently made exhibit clear to see when moving although not quite as positive today as 1.

3. Southworth’s Albermarbull Gambler for Staffmaster

PD 5 (1a)

1. Thomas’s Samtan Black Justice Blk/wht An exhibit at the upper end of the standard, shows balance and type throughout, excellent head shape, maybe slightly heavy lipped for some, but for me his more than ample virtue out weigh this, lovely front with correct length of leg/ body ratio and well set shoulders, behind the collar is no let down either, rib and bone both not over done and his constructional virtue is easy to see on the move maintaining a level top line throughout, best movement of the puppies here today, BPD & BPIB also later in the day he was awarded Puppy Group 1, well done.

2. Asker’s Dazmarnic I’ll Ave Arf. Red/wht On first glance the white markings on his legs can make him appear unbalanced, look beyond that and you find he isn’t at all, not as strong in the head as 1 but that’s not to say its under cooked at all, ears a bit heavy at this stage of his development, good straight front and a nice picture when viewed on profile, a bit more rib would see him alright, moved ok with a decent top line.

3. Walker & Rollin’s Seenworstaff True Grit for Janikastco

JD 9 (2a)

1. Payton’s Tonpay Barmy Army Blk brdl Good exhibit of a standard size and carrying good breed type, I liked his head piece with a nice dark round eye and neat well set ears, his front is spot on, although his handler had a tendency to place it too wide apart at times, when viewed in a natural stance his correctness is clear. A well sprung rib with good depth to it also, short coupled to a well angulated and developed rear, on profile, his angulation front and rear correspond as is evident when he moves, although, when asked to put in a performance in the challenge he downed tools somewhat.

2. Stanway’s Waystaff What a Cracker Brdl/ wht Slightly taller and lighter in construction than 1, good breed type, neat head without any coarseness, straight in front, no overload to shoulders, enough rib , bone and substance in balance, gave his handler the run around, but I managed to see enough of his virtues to award him his place.

3. Hammond’s Hammystaff Fire Starter

YD 5 (2A)

1. Payton’s Tonpay Barmy Army Jnr winner also had enough to win here.

2. Hart’s Albermarbull Red Riot JW, Fawn/wht, neat all-round exhibit displaying a clean cut outline when viewed any way. Nicely shaped head, with a good dark eye and well placed ears, Good pigmentation on mask and nails, on profile his angulation is good and when asked to move he maintains his level top line, I just preferred the slightly shorter coupled exhibit in 1st place.

3. Nicholson’s Zoellies Northern Star for Balladona

GD 2

Two very differing types of exhibit in this class

1. Hall’s Geordistaff Canny Laddie Brdl/wht Smart looking exhibit well off in the bone and substance departments, not over done, strong head, neat well set ears, straight fronted and behind the collar it all balances out nicely, except for me, a pound of weight off him and some hardness to his conditioning would see him giving a few of the top winners a run for their money, moved ok holding his profile well.

2. Pendleton’s Bullhawk In a Pickle Brdl/wht a finer exhibit all-round than 1, a neat head which is clean cut, straight fronted, he was presented in good physical order, a better depth of brisket and spring of rib would have enhanced him.

PGD 8

A pretty ordinary class, made it one of the hardest of the day to judge and try and get correct.

1. Hubble’s The Man at the Top Red/wht with lovely dark mask to his muzzle, he exudes strength for size without being coarse. Good head with neat enough ears, his front profile is good also. On side profile his angulations show good correlation hence he keeps a good outline when on the move.

2. Nicholson’s Rowansblac Luvly Jubbly for Ballindona JW Blk/brdl a slightly heavier set exhibit to 1, he has a nice clean cut outline to him and a high level of physical conditioning, well proportioned head with neatest of ears, his front although straight would benefit from a little more fore chest for me, he had good rib and powerful rear quarters, moved ok.

3. Torostaff Our Billy at Joemikeste JW

LD 9

1. Lewis’s Charmonics Regal Lad JW Brdl/wht An exhibit that is as near the standard that we have today as any I’ve seen of late, he is just so well balanced when viewed from any angle, all that we as judges should be looking for is here in complete moderation, his head is strong, not big, and is in total balance with the rest of the package, his lips are clean and not fleshy in any way, neatest of ears, tight feet and strong pastern, behind the collar is just grand, true correlation between front and rear and again I cannot state it too much about the balance he has, strong powerful rear quarters and his tail is naturally carried low although this boy is so up on his toes you could be mistaken if you don’t take the time to catch a glimpse of him in a relatively relaxed pose. Just about manages to retain enough composure to assess him when asked to move. Lovely exhibit. CC & BOB. Disappointed that he was absent from the Terrier Group.

2. Lister & Callaghan’s Mafia Don at Listcall brdl/wht Another exhibit that really fits the standard to my mind, also of clean outline and without exaggeration. Neat head and good ears when he used them, lovely looking balance when viewed in profile and on the move, unfortunately for me here today I found him soft to the touch and lacking condition somewhat which at this level cost him.

3.Hyde’s Sedgbred Black Diamond JW

OD 16 (1a)

1. Plant’s Ch Kyraloebis Italian Gigalo JW Sh.CM. Brdl/wht Top drawer exhibit, his balanced and powerful outline present another picture of good strength for size. Nice head piece being critical would just like a tad more on his length of muzzle, dark eye and neat ears, good front, well sprung rib, totally sound on the move holding his outstanding profile, preferred the vitality of the limit class winner in the challenge today. Nice Dog. RCC.

2. Jones’s Blazinstaff Light My Fire JW Sh.CM. Red/wht Another top drawer standard sized exhibit carrying plenty of virtue and breed type, I have had the pleasure of judging him a couple of times before today and have awarded him high honours, I was of the opinion today that he was just having one of those days where he wasn’t putting it all in as I know he can, still quality and a very worthy 2nd place.

3. Davidson’s Watstaff Dutch Minister

MPB 6

1. Desond’s Elitebull Elegance Blk/brdl Neat feminine exhibit that won this class with some to spare. She has a neat clean head piece of type and strength, lovely front, and when viewed on profile projects a picture of balance with good angulation both front and rear, moved with ease and confidence for a youngster.

2. Jones’s Rougestaff Flaming Ice wht/rd again a neat enough exhibit when looking past her markings, nice head although slightly “flighty” ears at the moment, she has enough behind the collar at this age and displays decent angulation, moved ok.

3.Bowlers Kyraloebis Feme Jadore at Trelynbow

PB 8

1. Butler’s Seenworstaff Storm Warning at Joemikste Rd/wht smart exhibit that looks as if she’s here to do business, screams breed type, Nice head, black mask and strength in under jaw, good front and lay of shoulder, she has a well sprung and deep rib not over long in back and a powerful rear, moved well and maintained her outline.BPB

2.Asker’s Dazmarnic Kiss n Tell red/wht another nice exhibit here, slightly lighter in bone than 1, but has many of the same virtues to admire, she too possesses a nice dark pigmentation , she took a little while to settle when asked to move, but when she got it together presented a nice profile.

3. Ollard’s Jodel’s Florentine

JB 8 (1a)

1. Birbeck’s Bellarouge Blithe Spirit Rd/wht classy exhibit of substance and type, paints a picture of power when viewed from either front or side profile, straight front with correct depth of brisket, powerful head with strength in under jaw on display, she has enough rib without being overdone in any way, a tremendously powerful rear helps to propel her around the ring with ease, it was the strength of rear that was the deciding factor for her over 2nd.

2. Mignano-Fricker’s Pantycelyn Just a Dream of Calavey Brdl exhibit with plenty of virtue, strength in head, but still retaining femininity, neat ears, her front is set straight and has a correct depth of brisket ratio. She too has enough behind the collar and presents a nice profile when on the move, as said above, just had to give way to 1st on the basis of a stronger rear here today, nice.

3. Beaufoy’s Lackyle Realta Beag of Wyrefare

YB 7 (3a)

Difficult class as all four exhibits were of a differing type

1. John’s Welshstaff Princess Ruby Blk/wht A neat feminine exhibit, she has a good straight front and a pleasing enough head not over done and certainly not doggy in anyway, in profile she is quite well balanced with good virtue and constructional values, would like to see a better level of conditioning to her.

2. Turner’s Quatros Alexis Icandy fawn/wht nice enough exhibit with feminine virtues to her, ok head not over done, good front, held her top line well when on the move.

3. Davies’s Braunstaff Cannock Charmer

GB 2 (1a)

1. With-held

2. Wilks’s Pureonic Angel Delight of Jevaces Brdl unplaced in PB class, correct bite and in good coat condition.

PGB 11 (4a)

1 Membury’s Mitzstaff Scrummalicious Blk/wht Compact exhibit presented with a good muscular outline, nice well shaped head with well set ears, she has good straight front and a decent depth to her brisket, behind this is a picture of good balance and a well developed rear, moved well to show off her well defined outline.

2. Mayren’s Fergiestaff Masked Girl Red/wht striking looking exhibit slightly heavier in bone and substance to 1, strength in the head here, clean lines all round, decent front, well sprung rib and strong rear enabling her to move with power, today I preferred a slightly more femine looking exhibit in 1st, a sound girl.

3. Hyde’s Sedgebred Beacon Baroness JW

LB 12 (2a)

Nice class to judge

1 Bowin’s Briganah Limited Edition Blk/brdl Wow, a really top draw exhibit here presented to me in the highest possible order. I would suggest that she is at the upper limit of the standard, for me she carries absolutely outstanding virtue, her head is of the type that turns you cold in one look and melts you in another, the strength, correct proportion, stop and ear set make the complete picture, but behind the collar she is a dream to look at, all components are clearly visible through her tight fitting shiny jacket, the correlation between front and rear angulation obvious, as is required it is all in moderation not exaggeration, her powerful rear quarters propel her forward with effortless ease. CC, lovely.

2 Halifax’s Seastaff Polar Force at Jackstaff Wht/rd another quality exhibit here, strikingly marked bitch with a lovely shaped head, good straight front to her and has nice clean outlines when viewed on profile, good rear angulation and muscle development, held her profile when on the move, I would have liked her to have been a little harder to the touch today.

3 Harvey’s Kyraloebis Sweetest Taboo making a trio quality exhibits.

OB. 9 (4a)

1 Pearce’s Ch Eclypstaff Take a Bow for Bullhawk Blk/wht When she can manage to contain herself this bitch is as good as they come, another that was presented to me in first class physical order, good standard sized exhibit screaming breed type, good head with the neatest of ears, she is well off for both bone and substance, she too has good correlation between front and rear and when she settles moves with power and drive. RCC

2. Mason’s Ch Dare To Dream Blk/brl top quality again here and is easy to see how she has done the winning she has, it was to my disappointment that today she seemed to down tools halfway through the job, on first look if I’m honest I didn’t think she had enough about her for me in terms of substance, but the quality is there when you look, enough before have documented her many virtues, and despite her lack of co-operation they were evident enough for a hard fought 2nd today.

3 Dickenson & Stewart’s Devils Angel a third quality exhibit who’s title won’t be far away in my opinion.
