Staffordshire Bull Terriers

May I take this opportunity to thank the committee & all concerned for inviting me to judge at this prestigious show & for the excellent hospitality before & after judging. I would also like to thank my superb ring stewards for their efforts in running the ring so well & to all the exhibitors for paying me the honour & privilege of allowing me to assess their dogs.

I know it has been said many times by others but I can honestly say that there were many very good animals who went cardless, such was the quality on the day. I was pleased to see that rearend muscularity was, for the most part, much improved & that the incidence of gay tails was less in evidence. I was, however, puzzled when viewing some exhibits mouths to see that a number had top & bottom canines ‘cropped’ or had the tips filed down for no apparent reason that I could see. I am reasonably forgiving on dentition but after all a Stafford should have large teeth.

Finally, as an aside, I was surprised to see so many ‘pieds’ but it is great to see such an array of different coat colours again.

MPD (1)

1 Hurst & Bibby’s Taraiel Buster Rhymes, a short coupled b/br puppy of sound construction who moves well enough. Nicely headed for age with small ears & well placed, round eyes. A nice puppy from this well known successful kennel who looks to have a good future. Beaten for BPD on maturity.

PD (7,2a)

1 Halifax’s Jackstaff Spanish Gold, a very good, upstanding red with a white blaze to chest. Lovely headed with clean lips & all the very good attributes needed in eyes, ears & mouth. He displays a nicely boned straight front, well laid shoulders & is well bodied up with short couplings & strong hindquarters which propel him powerfully across the ground. He is mature for his age & fit. He is an odds-on bet to attain his title sooner than later. BPD & BP;

2 Gabel & Hopkins’ Golden Boy Truffelstaff of Spiritstaff, a b/br dog of good make & shape, moves well on good quarters fore & aft. He has a good head with depth to skull, nicely placed eyes, ears & a good mouth. He is developing well & has a nicely proportioned body. Very likeable;

3 Bergundthal’s Buts Charming Ruffians I Don’t Care.

JD (6)

1 Blacker’s Bullrichs Bismark at Crossguns, an impressive, bang up to size, red dog with an absolutely beautiful head, clean lips & good scissor bite. He also has lovely dark round eyes & rose shaped ears. His front is straight & clean with good shoulder placement & although he has strong muscular hindquarters he just needs that extra bit of rib to complete the picture. A lovely dog all the same, he certainly moves with drive & behaves immaculately in the ring. A titled dog in the making for sure;

2 Moore & Connery’s Cicely Crazy Horse, predominantly white dog with black patches over eyes. He is short coupled & nicely ribbed with nice front. Dark round eyes & a good terrier bite & small ears, he presents a pleasing outline. His movement is good being propelled by a strong backend;

3 Duncan’s Revelry Dress N’Decorum.

YD (0).

ND (3,1)

1 G Boy Trufflestaff of S;

2 Martinez’s Bullbrothers Fifth Element, a nicely put together b/b dog with a white flash to chest. Strongly headed with good proportions & depth. Decent mouth. He has a strong shortish neck which runs into shoulders that are a little upright but do not affect his movement adversely. He has adequate rib & is short coupled with a decent rear end. Moves OK.

PGD (8,1)

A good class with close decisions all the way.

1 Ridley’s Jagstaff The Guardsman, very good red dog with a white chest blaze. Hard to fault as he possesses all that is required. His head is well proportioned with good ear & eye placement & a bite which is scissored & true. Nicely fronted with good feet & straight boned legs. He has a well defined barrel rib & powerful hindquarters which propel him strongly. A good future for him I’m sure;

2 Southworth’s Albermarbull Gambler for Staffmaster, as already stated this lovely fawn dog ran 1 very close & a lot of the comments for 1 applies to the other. Beautifully fronted with just the right depth to his brisket, he also has a good ribcage & short couplings & a well toned, muscular backend. His rear movement was probably slightly better than 1 but he lost out on overall outline. However on another day?;

3 Frost’s Geordiestaff Baileys Bairn.

LD (12,1)

1 Monestina’s Itcheboren Night Fury Dustblaze, a superb cobby b/br dog who caught my attention as soon as I saw him. He has small rose ears which are nicely placed & the darkest & roundest of eyes. His dentition is good & his skull is deep through. He has a lovely front with good bone & decent feet. Well ribbed, his couplings are short which enhances his powerful rearend. He tends to lean forward into his collar when being handled but his normal stance is four square. A very nice mover. A worthy RCC winner;

2 Beeby & Watson’s Geordiestaff Dynamo Dexter, I like the quality of dogs from this kennel & this short coupled b/br chap doesn’t disappoint. He has good forequarters & is nicely bodied & adequately well muscled in the hind end. His head shape is good & his eyes & ears are well placed & shaped & his mouth is right. Finally he moves well & was unlucky to meet 1;

3 Hall’s Geordiestaff Canny Laddie.

OD (19,3)

Another excellent class with so many dogs of high quality that proves the truism that on another day many places will, no doubt, change around.

1 Fairhurst’s Fairleniums Snow Patrol, what an animal this balanced b/w pied is. I can’t believe he has not attained his title yet. To me he is what the Standard says he should be. His skull is broad & deep through with the correct ratios & distinct stop. Clean lipped with good dentition & bite & with beautifully set dark round eyes & very good ear carriage, he shows a lovely expression. His forehand is straight & true & well boned but it is his breadth to chest that really impresses. He has a neck of correct length (a Stafford should not have a ‘good reach’ of neck as I often read, it should be rather short) which melds into lean muscled shoulders & a well defined barrel rib that gives plenty of heart & lung room. He is short coupled with a whipped in waist & has a powerful backend which propels him across the ring with that all essential drive. CC, BOB & G3;

2 Hedges & Bogovich’s Ch Suurisuun Boppinghams Birulai, r/w pied of excellent quality which in lots of ways is a smaller version of 1 & many of my previous comments apply to him. My first impression was how he exhibited that requirement of ‘great strength for size’. He is such a beautifully balanced well constructed dog with a strong wide forechest & excellent straight bone & good feet. He has a neck that is good in both length & strength which in turn runs into a very good body which is short coupled & powerful with strong well muscled hindquarters. He also possesses a smashing head with lovely clean lips, a skull which is both broad & deep. His bite is good & he owns lovely dark eyes & rose ears. I have to say I have a different opinion of him having put my hands on him than I had when I have seen him from the ringside. However although he is a tad small for me I can still appreciate his many attributes. A very pleasing dog who behaved being expertly handled;

3 Smith’s Ch Staffash The Hurricane.

VD (2,1)

1 Glassbrook & Rhodes’ Captain Ron, a powerful b/br dog who still exhibits very good tone & muscularity. Pleasingly headed with nicely placed eyes & ears. His mouth is OK & he has well defied cheek muscles. His front & rear quarters are good as is his body which is nicely coupled. He moves well with intent. A credit to his owners.

MPB (3)

1 Duncan’s Nettleworth No Nonsense, a b/br puppy of pleasing quality who was much more mature than the other 2 & this won her the class. Her head shape is very nice & developing well with no heaviness of the lip which covers a mouth of good dentition. She has a nice eye which is round & well placed as are her rose shaped ears & this gives her a nice expression. She has a nicely shaped body which is close coupled & decent quarters for her age. Her movement was OK. She is developing along the right lines & if this continues she might well trouble a few;

2 Hirst & Bibby’s Taraiel Lorde, an attractive, flashy b/br puppy sporting a white blaze to her chest & white socks to her front legs. I have yet to see a poor specimen from this kennel & this one is no exception. Her head attributes are good as she is clean lipped with a true terrier bite. She also has very nice ears & eyes. While she is a bit ‘leggy’ at the moment she has good quarters & she is bodying up nicely & given time she will turn out well I am sure;

3 Funnell’s Lackyle Oiche Eiri for Powerpack.

PB (7,2)

1 Bergundthal’s Buts Charming Ruffians Idony, a powerful, strong b/br bitch who possesses a lovely head with depth & width to her skull. Her eyes are dark & round & her ears are nicely placed. She has a very good wide front & is well ribbed up with pleasing hindquarters. A nice moving bitch who is a little longer in loin than 2 however she just won this class on that little bit extra maturity which at this age was the deciding factor;

2 Carter’s Jackstaff Keepsake at Seastaff, not quite as mature as her litter brother who won PD but still a very nice red with a white flash to her front. She has a lovely head shape with small rose ears & her eyes are dark & nicely shaped & placed. Bodying up nicely she is short in the couplings & her backend is strong & wide & like her sibling she moves very well. A lovely puppy who needs a little more time to develop into the bitch I am sure she will become;

3 Hart’s Albermarbull Ablebastaff.

JB (10)

A very competitive class with some super bitches present.

1 Jenkins’ Belterstaff Rock Steady, another smashing red with a white forechest which has width & the right amount of depth. She has a classic head with a black mask. Her attributes in ears, eyes & mouth are what one would want to see. She is short coupled with very good quarters. A very good moving girl who will hold her own, if not more, in any company;

2 Johnston & Brown’s Revelry Custom Made, nicely proportioned b/br bitch all round with a very good, strong head & lovely dark eyes & small ears. Her bite is clean with decent sized teeth. Being wide & straight fronted with a distinct barrel to her rib she is relatively short in the loin has well muscled hind end which enables her to move very well. Very likeable;

3 Kendall’s Biggleswick Diamond Lil.

YB (3)

1 McVay, Moffat & McBurnie’s Kargonstaff Konichiwa, a beautifully coloured & very strong brindle bitch who was, undoubtedly, the best mover in the class & the type of bitch that in my opinion is sorely needed in the breed. An up to size girl possessing a super head with rose ears & lovely round dark eye & a skull which is deep through & broad. Broad in the chest & with a barrelled rib, she is nicely coupled with powerful muscularity to her rear & is a very good mover;

2 Raynsford & Stevens’ Raynstaff Didja Ever, b/br bitch who while not as powerful as 1 is a nice type of bitch with many likeable attributes. Her head shape is good with nice eyes, correctly placed as are her ears, these being small & rosed. Her body proportions are well balanced with a defined rib which is deep & wide enough. She is short coupled with adequate power to her hindquarters. Moves OK;

3 Hart’s Albermarbull Ice Diamond.

NB (1)

1 Clough’s Gnobulls Ceaser The Day by Derolsalstaff, a previously seen red bitch with a white & reasonably wide forechest & decent bone. Strongly headed with nicely placed ears & darkish eyes. A little long in the body but with good hindquarters with a well positioned set on. She moved quite well.

PGB (8)

1 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Masud Tumaini, a cobby b/br of quality who stands foursquare all the time. The white flash to her front enhances her width which is straight with well laid shoulders. She is excellently coupled & is well bodied up. She is also nicely let down & has muscular thighs & her tail is correctly placed & carried. As for her head it is very well shaped with a broad strong muzzle, correct bite, deep through skull & decent ears & nicely shaped, dark eyes. She possesses very good & parallel movement holding her topline well;

2 K Konichiwa;

3 Ryan’s Rubericla Little Bumblebee.

LB (8)

1 Stanway’s Mosstrooper Making Mischief at Waystaff, a sound, predominantly white bitch with red patches that is developing into a lovely animal. She has a super head shape which has depth & pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop & her eyes are set wide & look straight ahead. She is very clean lipped & she has a good mouth. Strongly bodied she possesses a good front, defined rib, whipped in waist, short couplings & is well let down with nicely turned stifles & adequately muscled thighs. Her movement is good & was the best in the class;

2 Rollins’ Seenworstaff Tea For Two, I really liked this lovely red who was a very close second. She is beautifully headed with a deep wide but feminine head, good ear carriage & nicely set eyes. With adequate width to her front & good bone she gives a nice front on picture. However it doesn’t end there for she also has a very good body with plenty of rib & her couplings are short & to finish it all off she boasts a very powerful backend which she uses to drive across the ring. I just preferred the slightly cleaner outline of 1 on the day;

3 McGowan & Owen’s Tagstane Fuchsia Struck.

OB (10)

1 Trow’s Brizeacks Believe, when first viewing this red she doesn’t immediately jump out at you but when you go over her her many qualities become very clear. Her head is a delight as it is so powerfully constructed & she has a very good mouth, nicely placed & shaped ears & a lovely eye. She is strongly bodied with a wide but not overly deep brisket. Her short couplings flow into a very good rear with well turned stifles & correct tail placement. Her movement is second to none being both parallel & powerful. RCC;

2 Hirst & Bibby’s Ch Taraiel Ciara, having judged this b/br before I knew that in front of me I had a lovely good moving specimen & as always she is so fit she gleams. She has a delightful head & is excellent in all the details of eyes, ears & mouth fulfilling what the Standard calls for & together they produce a very pleasing expression. With a straight & wide front, well rounded rib, strong rearquarters & short couplings she presents a picture of the champion she is;

3 Ridley’s Sunnystone Mulberry Mayhem.

VB (5,2)

What a credit to their owners these bitches are & what a credit to them their owners are!

1 Hirst & Bibby’s Ch Taraiel Trinity, at 8½ what a fantastic bitch. She is fitter & in better nick than some half her age. I have admired this lady for years & previously had awarded her a RCC but I was unprepared to see her in such immaculate condition. Well known, but for those who don’t know her, she is a b/br with a white patch to the back of her, pleasingly short neck & a white blaze to her chest. Her front is as it always was with good straight one & broad forechest. She is still well ribbed up & stands four square. She has a wonderful, short coupled body, whipped in waist, barrel rib, short neck & well laid shoulders, correctly angulated hindquarters which are wide & still have the power to propel her with drive. She holds her topline well on the move & there is no sign of aged movement. She also still has a superb head which is deep through & broad & a very good tight lipped mouth, good dentition, rose ears & lovely round & dark eyes. I had no hesitation in awarding her the CC;

2 Hopkins’ Ch Monifa Kanika, another well kept & fit 7 years old b/br who is also well known on the circuit. She owns a very good head still with depth & width, tight lips, good dentition, very good eye placement & shape & small rose shaped ears. Very strongly bodied with depth to her brisket she too is short coupled with good front & hindquarters,. She moves with power on good feet;

3 Coffey’s Aboriginal Davids Angel.
