Staffordshire Bull Terriers

Some very high quality exhibits in good numbers.

Having not been around the show scene (for one reason or another) for a couple of years I was very much looking forward to this appointment & it didn’t disappoint, the standard of exhibit was very high in some classes & some decisions were very close & could/will change places on any other given day. My decisions & subsequent awards were made with soundness & lack of exaggeration in mind without compromise of type & I was very pleased with all my winners.

DCC & BOB, Smith’s Staffash The Hurricane, outstanding w/r (skewbald) who attracts immediately with his flashy markings but it was this dog’s conformation that really (& instantly) caught my eye. Very typical Stafford head with clean muzzle of sufficient length, large teeth with perfect scissor bite, dark & well placed eye set off by rose ears which were perfect in set/size to compliment. In front he exhibits perfect skeletal angles, lengths & bone girth giving pleasing flowing line & correct weight distribution from pastern to shoulder. From above he has lovely flowing taper from shoulder to loin exhibiting good rib, & in profile he exhibits a perfect topline with pleasing underline to compliment, has a very good rear showing correct & complimenting angles at pelvis & stifle that facilitated flawless rear drive (being true with correct foot strike & drive through) which was balanced in action with his forehand.

RDCC, Essex’s Javawolf Mighty Mouse, white with brindle eye patch, a dog who epitomises the Standard wording of ‘well balanced , active & agile ... being muscular & well defined’. Typical head showing muzzle of correct proportions with clean lip & good dentition , large nostrils & well defined stop, skull is deep through with discernible cheek muscles, dark round eye, ears could be tidier but they are small & do not detract from his obvious virtue. In front he exhibits nice width & depth of chest with good weight distribution throughout. In profile he shows complimenting angulations on his front/rear & his footing facilitates correct weight distribution throughout. Sound body properties & balance are enhanced by his lovely muscular definition. A sound moving dog too.

BCC, Mason’s Ch Dare To Dream, quality bitch from head to tail, very sound, head of very good proportions, clean muzzle, defined stop, good dentition, discernible underjaw. Excellent front of correct width & depth & exhibiting complimenting angle at pastern, humerus & scapulae all providing sound weight distribution to the fore. Nicely tapered from shoulder to light loin when viewed from above showing decent rib, good topline with correct loin, pelvis & croup facilitating strong rear footing with correctly angled stifle. A very good moving bitch whose rear action in particular is excellent.

RBCC, Robinson’s Sabahouse Lets Hope for Boydslass, striking bitch whose balance & superior movement won her through in a very strong class & challenge among some serious competition. Quality b/br who shows complimenting angulations throughout her make-up. Discernibly feminine in head (though far from weak), correct skull to muzzle ratio, clean in lip with good dentition, defined stop, skull deep through to strong muscular jaw muscle, dark eye & small ears (which she was intent on pinning back throughout). Good body properties, possessing pleasing taper when viewed from above & correct topline in profile, the latter complimented by an underline that flowed pleasingly to tight abdomen & light loin. Rear angulation provided sound footing & weight distribution standing & on the move.

MPD (2)

1 Moore & Connery’s Prince Of Apaches for Cicely, promising b/br/w puppy dog who exhibits a lovely outline. Nice front, straight & well boned, pleasing head with discernible stop, correct/clean muzzle & good dentition. Nice balance & proportion in body length to height ratio & good topline leading to well angulated rear. Moved out well for one so young which won him BPD.

PD (4)

1 Southworth’s Albermarbull Gambler for Staffmaster, nice young r/f with white, good headed young pup, clean muzzle with good dentition. Front of good proportions, strong bone & exhibiting decent weight distribution. Body short coupled showing good rib, taper & topline, correctly angled rear facilitating very good drive moving out but immaturity in forward action cost him in challenge for BPD;

2 Tittley & Bosanko’s Willowstaff That My Daddy at Garwstaff, promising young b/br who excels when viewed in profile, lovely head, correct topline (slight rise at loin & angled pelvis), facilitating correct rear footing with bent stifle. At this stage in his development though he lacks width & depth on front which both detract from his appearance & movement on the fore. If this matures in this area he will be very nice indeed;

3 Stephen’s Simbas Game Lad.

JD (5)

1 Stanway’s Waystaff What A Cracker, liked this dog a lot! This br/w has the look & profile that appeals very much to me. Good head, muzzle of good length & of correct ratio to skull, housing good dentition. Clean front with good weight distribution & angulations from pastern through to shoulder. From above he flows from neck, pleasing taper through rib to a light loin. In profile he shows correct topline & complimentary underline with defined muscularity throughout. Correctly angled rear accommodates powerful rear drive & sound footing (just behind pelvic line) when static. His movement on the fore was a little unsettled & bettered by my main winners;

2 Pinder’s Albermerabull Reds Legacy, nice deeply pigmented red of good proportions showing soundness throughout, pleasing head, very good front;

3 Ardemani’s Hells Guardian of Froggy’s Valley.

YD (5)

1 Beeby & Watson’s Geordiestaff Dynamo Dexter, very good construction throughout on this striking b/br with white, good head, muzzle & dentition, nice front of good width, depth & angulations. Rear angulations complimenting his front & body proportions balance out to make a very pleasing picture, nice dog all round & in good condition to boot;

2 Frost’s Geordiestaff Baileys Bairn, litter brother to 1 & similar qualities apply here, not in same condition as 1 but moved effortlessly. Two promising young dogs;

3 Hodge & MacLean’s Revelry Nuff Said.

ND (4)

1 Crosby’s Quatros Red Archibald, compact & well muscled but unruly red who made any assessment of him a task in itself. Seen enough to warrant his place. Very good in front, excels in head with clean unexaggerated features;

2 Cramer’s Staffstyle You Got The Love, heavier set w/r, soundly constructed & moved fairly well, strong in head with powerful front (wide/thick boned), decent topline leading to an equally powerful, muscular rear. A real strong specimen who I am sure will appeal to many others;

3 Patrick’s Welshstaff Last Gasp.

PGD (9)

1 Haywood’s Lukes Like Trouble, deep red of athletic proportions (though not tall), excellent in profile where he displayed complimentary angulations front & rear with pleasing topline & an underline that flowed from a chest of sufficient depth to abdomen (no abrupt tuck or shortened rib) while displaying discernible muscularity throughout. From above he displayed the taper & lightness of loin I sought, & on front he was well boned with good feet & weight distribution. Moved effortlessly & with economy of effort. A little more definition in his head would have completed a very pleasing picture;

2 Hart’s Albermabull Red Riot, red who had a very appealing head , clean but defined, compact in body properties & exhibiting good construction throughout. A nice dog but preferred the profile/athleticism & movement of 1;

3 Jardine & Spence’s Firestreak The Memory Man.

LD (17)

1 S The Hurricane. CC & BOB;

2 J Mighty Mouse; 3 Stanway’s Waystaff Diggers Double.

OD (12)

1 Cartwright’s Zakstaff Game On, cracking b/br who ticked all my boxes to win this hard fought class. Clean, proportionate head, good dentition, clean front showing correct & complimenting angulations from pastern through to shoulder. Exhibiting taper from shoulder through to light loin when viewed from above, & equally pleasing outline when viewed in profile, with correct topline & complimenting underline. Good rear construction with solid muscularity & footing. Moved very well with a true driving action from the rear & good reach on the fore. A cracking dog who was very close at the end;

2 Lewis’ Charmonics Regal Lad, another very nice dog, b/br with white, scores highly when viewed on front, head is very good, deep through skull, strong underjaw, balanced skull muzzle ratio, good dentition. Front of appealing width & depth giving an impression of both power & athleticism. Well bodied with tapered rib, pleasing topline & good pelvis providing correct rear angulations & good movement. I would have preferred him a little fitter but his qualities are easily distinguishable;

3 Stanway’s Waystaff Strikes Out.

MPB (3)

1 Jardine’s Cover Girl at Farhan, lovely young b/br with white with everything in the right place to grow into. Nice head showing discernible stop & good eye placement, good width to muzzle which is of correct proportion to skull. Lovely front with good skeletal angulations & lengths, nicely proportioned when viewed in profile with length of leg balancing out with body properties. Good rear angulation in both pelvis & stifle & decent when on the move for one so young. BP;

2 Moffet’s Nolnah Fresh Temptation, br/w, very nice headed puppy who exhibits good body proportions also. Similar in stature to 1 but discernibly softer in outline/profile, which 1 held better;

3 Jackson’s Pride And Glory Moonshine.

PB (9)

1 Stephens’ Midnight Truffle, liked this b/br puppy, nicely feminine but without weakness, proportionate head, good stop, deep through to muscular cheeks, decent strength in muzzle & good dentition. Lovely front being straight & of good width with correct angulations. Nicely bodied with good rib & light loin, correct topline & good rear angulations allowing her feet to sit just behind her pelvic line providing good weight distribution & the required drive when moving out;

2 Tittley & Bosanko’s Garwstaff Angels Delight, b/br who excels on front & outline. Obvious feminine qualities being clean & unexaggerated in head, angulations both front & rear that saw her move with discernible ease. Nice pup;

3 Tittley & Bosanko’s Garwstaff Sitting Pretty.

JB (13)

1 Migano-Fricker & Fricker’s Pantycelyn Juat A Dream of Calavey, very nice brindle, very sound in body & limb, nice head (clean & unexaggerated), good dentition, terrific front being straight & well boned with correct angulations at pastern, humerus & shoulder. Lovely topline leading to correctly angulated pelvis & stifle. An exceptionally good mover fore, aft & in profile. A little better conditioning would have topped off a very pleasing picture & would have perhaps seen a strong challenge for top awards;

2 Essex’s Quinlent Sloppy Seconds, smaller but well proportioned red who was a real live wire & tried hard to prevent me from assessing her obvious virtue. Lovely head with clean, chiselled features, nice clean front showing good angulations & sufficient depth & width. Defined muscularity in body, back, shoulders & hindquarters. In profile displays slightly less angle at pelvis than my preference making her topline appear rather straight but her rear angulation is still accommodated & she displayed sound footing & rear action on the move;

3 Rollin’s Seenworstaff Tea For Two.

YB (6)

1 McDonald, Foster, Johnstone & Brown’s Revelry Soul Diva, b/br who is quite sound throughout, excels on front, straight & true with good angulations, good head, strong but feminine, good dentition. Tapers nicely when viewed from above displaying good rib & a lightness in loin. Strong rearquarters with good angulations complimenting the fore. Effortless when on the move holding her profile throughout;

2 Jackson’s Roughnecks Ecstasy Of Gold, nice red, nicely headed (clean & unexaggerated) & with front of good width, depth & angulations, however she is most pleasing when viewed in profile when her soundness of conformation can easily be seen. Good topline & underline, good rear & good on the move;

3 Rhodes’ Crumkill Gidimon Girl at Teracota.

NB (6)

1 Parker’s Nettleworth Not On Ya Nelly, b/br, bitch who exhibits decent body properties & sound angulations throughout (marked her as an excellent mover). A little more head /muzzle strength would make her a little more complete;

2 G Angels Delight;

3 Meikle’s Tagstane Bright Idea.

PGB (13)

1 John’s Welshstaff Princess Ruby, stunning b/br/w, strong but discernibly feminine in skull & muzzle , nicely set eyes/ears, good dentition. Excels on front giving an impression of lift & width without being rangy, lovely body properties with pleasing outline (topline & underline) & taper. Good rear angulation providing strong base when stacked but never settled on the move & failed to make the most of the opportunity to display the drive & fluidity this type of soundness would/should provide. A very nice bitch who I considered strongly at the end;

2 Smith’s Willowstaff Keep The Faith, unexaggerated & unassuming b/br who is very sound in make-up evidenced by her effortless movement. Very good angulations on both front & rear & her topline is conducive to such. Clean, feminine head with good dentition, a little more strength in underjaw & ring presence would complete;

3 Rhodes’ Willowstaff Arcadian Rose.

LB (13)

1 RCC, S Lets Hope for B;

2 Smith’s Rowellstaff Red Ember at Willowstaff, red who is full of virtue & soundness. Strong, defined but unexaggerated head, good skull to muzzle ratio & correct dentition, lovely front of sufficient width & depth & of angulations that are complimented by her rear, shows nice body properties, rib, topline & underline flowing to light loin. Effortless on the move but slightly close on rear & was subsequently pipped at the post by 1 when moved/compared together a second time;

3 Wilson’s Eclypstaff There You Go at Kalverin.

OB (10)

1 CC, Ch Dare To Dream;

2 Winwood & Tunnah’s Cursus Summer Storm, stunning b/br who really looked on top form here. Strong/chiselled but feminine head, eye & ear compliment in both placement & size, strong muzzle of correct proportion to skull, with discernible cheek muscles & good dentition, lovely front of very good proportion & angulation, correct topline & her lean & muscular condition enhanced her underline to tight abdomen. Good angulation on her rear with sound footing when stacked & powerful drive when on the move. Liked her lots;

3 Hirst & Bibby’s Taraiel Rihanna.

VB (3)

1 Cairns’ Dinalghi Touch Of Class, b/br of 8 years who could easily compete in limit or open class. Sound properties throughout, head is feminine, clean but with no sign of weakness, good dentition & strong proportionate muzzle, lovely clean front, complimenting angulations throughout, correct topline, tight in underline & solid rearquarters in both muscletone & stance. A classy bitch who moved very well both ways & held her outline in profile;

2 Hirst & Bibby’s Ch Taraiel Trinity, b/br, very worthy ch who still exudes the virtue that earned her title. Save for a pound or two weight gain I could easily type similar critique to that of her lovely daughter (3rd in OB) as she has certainly passed on her virtue;

3 Fletcher & Seedhouse’s Granitangel Solar Flame.
