STAFFORDSHIRE BULL PAIGNTON 10 Judge: Mrs A Hubery STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE PAIGNTON 10 STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER With a long train journey ahead of me, it gave me time to ponder on what lay ahead of my appointment. I arrived at the hotel and was welcomed by the hard working secretary, Aileen Hodsoll. She introduced me to fellow judges and committee, it was 5 star treatment. The men in their fine bib and tucker and the ladies smart and casual. The meal was fantastic, the chairman asked us to be upstanding and toast the Queen, then the chairman gave his speech and began to tell us how the society came from humble beginnings to where it is now. The committee wished us all the best on our appointments. I would like to thank everyone who sought my opinion, it is one person’s opinion, we all know times are hard and I was extremely humbled by the entry. On a weekday and the cost of fuel and entry fees. Thank you once again. Enough of my ramblings, the critique is what you are waiting for I think! It is about 4 years since I judged males, I am afraid the movement has not improved, the males I placed I was very happy with and some who were cardless who nearly made the cut were narrowly beaten on minor points and some moved very erratic, there were some that moved like a Bull Terrier and gladly only a couple moved like one of the working breeds. Reminder: Forequarters - legs straight, well boned, set rather wide apart, without looseness at the shoulder, showing no weakness at pasterns. Hindquarters - should be well muscled, hocks well let down, stifle well bent, legs parallel when viewed from behind. I found lack of muscle, high hocks, straight stifles. These points must be discouraged in this breed. I also found a couple with no strength in head. I like to think if blindfolded when touching a Stafford you know it by its head, not fleshy nor lack of strength. The bitches outshone the males which is a good thing, but these bitches will be mated to what if the quality is disappearing. MPD(7, 1) 1 Pearce’s Bullhawk Crack The Code. At the leggy stage at the moment, but enough to like in this class. B/b with dark round eye, head of correct shape, would have preferred a little more bone, stood four square, lost out on BP. The puppy dog was the finished puppy. 2 McDermott’s Waystaff Dutch Chieftain. This puppy caught my eye, compact stood four square, head shape stronger than first, had some weight on him, I do not mind this in a puppy, moved soundly. 3 Rollin’s Seenworstaff Strutistuff. A geordie name if ever there was one. 3 lovely babies. PD(8, 1) 1 Stuart’s Ranolen Run For Home. This puppy can run to my home anytime. B/b who could not be denied BPIB. A head that should be in a baby not overdone, very nice small ears that were not heavy or too fine. His eyes were dark with a keen expression I was looking for. Enough length of stop, tight lipped, very sound in shoulders, correct bone ratio, the brisket is starting to form, he carried a little weight round his loins, but I did not mind that as he looked like a puppy, not an adult. A puppy that was excellent on the move, even with his little weight. I do hope the handler does not continue to string him up on the move as this puppy is a natural good mover. Well done. 2 Wall &Webb’s Manark Predator. Another promising puppy which was in the same mould, had good ring presence, I liked the overall compactness of the winner, correct shaped head, longer in stop than first, neck well defined into neat shoulders, his brisket has dropped, level topline, he moved soundly enough but a little close on hindquarters. 3 Chandler &Barratt’s Chanspire Vinnies Image. JD(9, 3) 1 Jones’ Blazinstaff Light My Fire. This dog was deceiving. A case where hands on to feel the quality. A red with a black mask and some ticking here and there allowed in our standard. Not overdone, correct height, maybe a tad heavy in the loin area, but he is still a junior, very good head shape, on looking at his eyes, you would think maybe a little darker, but I put this in context with his rich red coat, this was acceptable to me, strong in shoulders without being overdone, correct bone, density spring of rib apparent. I would not like him to be heavier than what he is now, ample rib, topline held on the move, very well presented, expertly handled. 2 Schofield &Galvin’s Scousious Pretzel Logic. I have admired this dog from the ringside. B/b, top size, very strong in head, excellent pigmentation, keen expression, huge teeth, level bite, clean underjaw, muscular in neck into powerful shoulders, mature in the rib, nicely tucked up, a little longer in the back than first, hence his 2nd today. I was looking again for something more compact, a bit too much for me, but I can understand why he has done well, a handsome devil he is. 3 Dix’s Eclypstaff Royal Flush. YD(7, 1) 1 Scousious Pretzel Logic. 2 Moore’s Gears Of War. B/b, who had a decent head, could have done with some more fill in under the eyes, longer in stop than first, needs to rip up, hope he gets this on maturity, moved soundly, expertly handled. 3 Longley’s Emperostaff Coronet Gold. UGD(3) 1 Blazenstaff Light My Fire. Learned this was his JW point, well done. 2 Manark Predator. 3 Green’s Pirranstaff Its A Knockout. PGD(8, 1) 1 Gibbins’ Crossguns Fred Astaire. Tiger/brindle who was in fine fettle, strong in head, definition, round eyes, cheek bumps noticeable enough, bone on front legs that were straight, feet turned out but could have been tighter, depth of brisket, slight tuck up, enough bend of stifle, moved parallel, gently handled. 2 Gears Of War. 3 Sherdrew Born To Perform At Maratana. LD (18, 5) 1 Patterson’s Penshannel Wicked William JW. When this dog came in the ring I thought, he’s nice. He did not disappoint, a rich red who is bang on the standard, 16 inches 38/39. Very strong in head without distracting from what the breed should look like, no looseness on head or round the lips, round eyes, just enough fill in under the eyes, blackest of noses and lips, loved his expression, strong neck into deep chest, the correct amount of rib, level topline, very good tuck up, he used his bend of stifle and very good let down of hock, when he moved, was so true without being an effort. I would have liked a tad more muscle on his hams, do not know what it is, always difficult to see the muscle in a red. An excellent example of the breed, if I was to nit pick, myself would have liked a little more ear, although he used them correctly. He was so compact and stood four square and did not put a foot wrong for me today. My CC. Congratulations. 2 Beaufoy’s Wyrefare The Govenor. To be honest, he never appealed to me, as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover. A dog like my junior class winner, has to have hands on, a standard male who was not overdone. This dog was better in ear carriage than first, strong in head without being coarse, clean cut lines, enough muscle definition in neck, not too wide in shoulders, lovely spring of rib, level topline, good bend of stifle, short in hock. I moved him a couple of times as I thought he moved a tad close, but the handler got him in the right place and he moved with drive, again it was compactness that won this class. Well done. 3 Scarlett’s Ramblestaff Ebonezer Good JW. Three fine examples of the breed. OD(14) This was a top notch class. I had to make some tough decisions. My winner of this class is a fine example of the breed. Bang on the standard, not overdone in any point and for the life of me, I cannot say his name. 1 Byrne’s Ir Ch Lackyle Diabhal Dearbhchlo. I would say 16/38lb male who has all the attributes I was looking for. Balance without being overdone, not a bit head, who wants big? but strong enough, ear carriage better than first, good pigmentation, clean in lips, no small teeth in this mouth, well muscled in the neck, clean shoulders, level topline, tucked up, nicely moved with purpose. Well done, he was my RCC. Today the deciding factor in my opinion was it going to be a little bit more ear or I would have liked a little more rib. Rib ear, ear rib, so limit dog got the nod. Two exciting Staffords. 2 Moffett’s Rypark Mister T. B/b who caught my eye, beautiful balanced dog who demanded me to work even harder. I did like his head, better than winner, perfect round eye, correct ear carriage, enough length of stop, strong in muzzle, very clean underjaw, very strong in neck and shoulders, ample rib, deeper in chest than first, he was longer on back but good bend of stifle and short in hock, my deciding factor between first and second, he was carrying a little weight over his loins, if he had had the tuck up of the winner and a tad shorter on back he may have worried him more but well done, nice looking Stafford. 3 Stewart’s Rapstaff The Game. Very nice dog, also lost out on the first and second who were better movers. The bitches outshone the males, which is a good thing. But these bitches will be mated to what if the quality is disappearing. MPB(6, 4) 1 Draper’s Herodotus Well Lush. And well lush she was. This breeder turns out some lovely Staffords. She is one of them, red/white, lovely markings, her head was to die for, as a baby Stafford should be, short without being too short, lovely pigmentation, short, compact, really moved to perfection, one to watch for in the future me thinks. 2 Simpson’s Briganah Breaking Dawn. Sweet name for a sweet girl. Different to first. B/b, very promising youngster, not overdone head, excellent darkest of pigmentation, she wanted to please and she got what she wanted, stood like a good un! Enough to like, she was bewildered by it all, did well to secure this place. Two nice puppies. 3 Marshall’s Marstaff Diamond. PB(12, 1) 1 Kemp’s Bekanbar Shining Star. What a star for the future. I loved this little bitch, brindle with a tight coat, strong in head without being doggy, dark eye, lovely expression, excellent in front, liked her clean lines, her brisket, just right for a puppy, and she was tucked up as well, she moved expertly and with drive, will watch how this one progresses, wish she was mine. 2 Morgan’s Biggleswick Whats On. Tiger/brindle of quality, old fashioned type of bitch, different altogether than first but very promising, her head was ample with pigment to suit her coat colour, straight in front, tight super coat, she was a tad longer on back but not a bad thing. I can live with that, I just preferred the shortness of winner, she misbehaved on the move being a puppy I suppose but I saw enough to place her in this position. 3 Nicholson’s Ballindonna Bombshell. I liked her as well. Three very good puppies. JB(4, 1) A very disappointing class in numbers but not quality. I was over the moon, the three I had were of excellent quality. 1 Frankland’s Adwych Tiger Lily. This breeder has turned out some nice bitches I have judged her before and she did not disappoint, stood four square with clean lines, a bitch which must be handled to feel the quality. Feminine head, not short in stop with correct ear carriage, width under the eyes that gave her a good expression, she was not too wide in front, had a super level topline, she took advantage of the big ring to show off her sound movement, expertly handled. 2 Trow’s Hubbulls The Promice. Another different to winner, red with strong head, gleaming condition, as soon as she came in the ring her quality just hits you, expression was stronger than first, she was also shorter on the back. I was looking for the cleaner lines, that is why she was placed second, but I am in no doubt places will change. Well done on the expert handling. 3 Langford’s Advocates Lust At First Site Of Valenzo. YB(6, 1) 1 Taylor’s Niatona Knitted By Nannas. A bitch that also needs hands on to feel the quality. A very good head, strong without being overdone, excellent pigmentation, not too short in stop, very good cheek bumps, keen expression, very tidy in the shoulders and the correct bone on her front legs, she had a good spring of rib for one so young, her coat was gleaming with health, she had the advantage of a good tuck up and moved effortlessly, gently handled to secure this place. 2 Reid &Booth’s Ramblestaff Take On Me. Another one that was different to winner but in her own right a good honest bitch, a good head, a little longer in stop than first, clean in lips and strong underjaw, she was well constructed, but moved a little close behind. 3 Raynsford’s Carabean Coco At Raynstaff. UGB(2) 1 Bekanbar Shining Star. 2 Badenhorst’s Ramblestaff Fanny F Nakapan. Powerful bitch, stood four square, very strong in head, level bite, she had a little more lip than I like, she was ribbed up nicely, very strong in hindquarters, moved with drive. PGB (5, 1) Disappointing in numbers again for post grad. But again was hoping there was something in there. And there was. 1 Higgins’ Spinnjack Mistletoe Magic. Stood out in this class, b/b of quality, very dark pigmentation, correct bite, tight lipped and clean outlines, would have preferred a little lighter in the loins and a smidgin smaller ear, but she was not to be denied this class. 2 Frances &Hillman’s Samtan Forget-Me-Not JW. A very strong bitch with a powerful headpiece, eyes could have been rounder but she had a keen expression, enough bone with straight legs, she had a good depth of brisket, short, compact, well handled. 3 Keil’s Ofceiisie’s Misty Eve. LB(17, 2) 1 Dewar’s Mintmar One For One. One I have seen from the ringside, she is a very useful bitch, stronger than I would like, but she stood out in this class, extremely strong in all departments, short in stop, pronounced cheek muscles, big white teeth in clean lips, strong in the shoulders and tucked in at the elbows, short on back, well muscled hindquarters, moved with purpose. 2 Jones’ Lackyle Duilleog Daracha. B/b, smart looking bitch in the standard, different type to first. I liked her head shape, ears correct which I tried to get her to use them to show off her expression, would have liked her to have a little more fill in under the eyes, nicely tucked up, liked the more compact of winner. Two useful bitches. 3 Norton’s Mintmar Look Again For Tikkurilan. B/b of quality. OB (11, 1) The creme de la creme in this class. Quality abounds. 1 Hopkins’ Ch Trufflestaff Monifa Kanika JW. B/b, not a lot more I can add about this lady, she was absolutely just on top form today, she is bang in on standard in height and weight, her strong but feminine headpiece just so, correct ears, blackest of eyes, the loveliest tight lips, big teeth, very clean underjaw, streamlined neck but with enough strength into just divine shoulder placement, elbows tucked in, her bone was just exquisite, tight feet, correct rib and brisket, level topline and an hour glass stafford bitch, she stood four square and moved with urgency and power but with elegance, some would say she may be too short in stop for them but the whole package is what I was looking for, not just one point, she was my CC Bitch and BOB. Thank you for allowing me to get my hands on her again. Well what can I say, one of my favourite bitches, she was so unlucky to meet the winner in such exceptional form. 2 Lowe &Hedges’ Ramblix Revisionist At Khanspride JW. I have watched this girl mature into a fine specimen of a Stafford, my type of bitch, if I was to be honest, but the winner could not be denied her place today. She is bang on the standard, what you see is what you get with this bitch, nothing under nothing, over a right good head which is a tad stronger than first. Longer in stop, her neck was powerful, but feminine, well laid shoulders, ribs were just the right amound of spring, her coat was tight and in gleaming condition, excellent bend of stifle and her shortness of hock allowed her to move so soundly. A bitch I have admired for a while, well done. My RCC. 3 Jackson &Whitehouse’s Ch Bourtie Wot A Steal JW. This bitch was the model of fitness. A cracking trio of bitches. Thank you for allowing me to have my hands on them. Audrey Hubery |
