STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE LKA 10

Staffordshire Bull Terriers
A very interesting entry. On closer evaluation of the exhibits some classes didn’t live up to the apparent promise while others exceeded my expectations. A total of 51 dogs & 53 bitches were entered making 113 entries with 22 absent. I suspect the extended early cold spell had taken its toll on those intending to come to Birmingham, as well as affecting the fitness of some of the dogs that did turn up.

It’s 2 or 3 years since I last judged in the UK & there was no apparent wide spread problems as I have found in some overseas appointments where there is limited breeding stock available. Some didn’t meet my idea of the Standard, either too heavy or too fine. I have always maintained that apart from temperament, balance & soundness are the two most important traits we must strive for in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

There were some mouth faults evident, even in the higher classes & rather too many were unable to retain a level topline while moving, but overall there were sufficient quality exhibits to find & reward merit & my top winners certainly stand with any I have judged over the years.

PD (4,1a)

1 Davidson’s Waystaff Dutch Minister, this 10½ months brindle with white blaze & vest has a broad skull, pronounced stop, neat ears & a typical expression with round dark eyes, he has a sound overall skeleton with balanced rib & brisket, he is well muscled for his age without being overblown, has a level topline, well developed hindquarters & firm well set feet, I’ll be interested to see him in 6 or 7 months when he has filled out & matured further. BP;

2 McDermott’s Waystaff Dutch Chieftan, this mainly white pup with a couple of hind brindle patches is the litter brother of 1 with a broader skull & front, but overall not quite as mature;

3 Galloway’s Herodotus No Problemo.

JD (9,1)

1 Leyland & Simpson’s Briganah Black Knight, this brindle dog is just the right balance of Bull & Terrier with an ideal head, neat ears, super stop & round dark eyes, he is well boned & muscled with a broad front, four square stance, level topline & well muscled hindquarters;

2 Hyde’s Sedgbred Black Diamond, a strong well built brindle with an excellent bite, he has a notable lightness in loin & was shown very fit;

3 Birney’s Sebsonic Jealous Boy.

YD (3)

1 S Jealous Boy, a Standard brindle dog with a shapely head, good expression, scissor bite & distinct stop, he has a good front, deep brisket & well sprung rib, level topline & moved OK;

2 Knight’s Rubysha Redeemeing Jewel at Redrichstaff, a taller red with white vest who moved very well. Needs to fill out & develop more muscle;

3 Williams’ Hubbulls Nebraska.

GD (6,1)

1 Jones’ Blazinstaff Light My Fire, a very typical head, expression & tidy ears on this red with white markings, broad front, deep brisket, powerful shoulders & a level topline which was also held as he moved meaningfully around the ring, good bone & muscle throughout & powerful hindquarters;

2 Essex’s Javawolf Mighty Mouse, this smaller br/pied, dark round eyes & a perfect scissor bite in a well shaped head with distinct stop. He also moves very well, but was a little fine for me;

3 S Jealous Boy.

PGD (6,4)

1 Tennick & Ridley’s Jagsstaff The Fisherking, a strong headed & generally bullier type red with white chest flash & excellent pigmentation, he has neat ears, tidy lips & a typical keen expression, well muscled with particularly powerful hindquarters;

2 Funnell’s Veklorra Barney Rebel at Powerpack, b/br with round dark eyes, neat ears & pronounced cheek muscles.

LD (16,4)

1 Lewis, Smart & Lowe’s Blazinstaff Blazin Justice, this is a super balanced pied with mainly red body & white head, strong head, broad & clean with a distinct stop, neat ears, round dark eyes & a typical cheeky expression, he has a large black nose, clean lips & a perfect scissor bite, this dog has excellent bone throughout, a broad front, stands foursquare, has deep brisket, plenty of well sprung rib, level topline & moved well, I made a small note after going over him ‘will take some beating!’. CC & BOB;

2 Samby & Frost’s Sunnystone Wizard Of Oz, much improved since I saw him at Richmond, this brindle has developed into a well balanced dog with a very typical head & round dark eyes giving the right expression, perfect mouth, strong underjaw, powerful shoulders & deep brisket, one of the best moving dogs seen all day & holding his topline too. RCC;

3 Patterson’s Penshannel Wicked William.

OD (11,1)

1 Dewar’s Euphemia Drummer Boy, well balanced brindle with typical expression, excellent mouth, clean lips & shapely head, broad front, excellent shoulders & spring of rib, deep brisket & level topline, he moved well with his powerful hindquarters propelling him & was shown fit;

2 Johnson & Pushko’s Rus Tillcarr Tillerman, brindle with shapely head, neat ears, short foreface, perfect scissor bite, he gives the impression of a packet of power with good bone throughout, a deep brisket & well muscled, moved well & held his topline level throughout;

3 Marachowska’s Kalhols Black Magic at Passernomen.

PB (9,1)

1 Cordwell’s Waystaff Dutch Show Girl, this red with a white flash turned out to be litter sister to 1 & 2 in PD, so not a bad litter. She was a little shy, but has a delightful wide eyed expression with round dark eyes. Neat ears, scissor bite & a shapely head, she has adequate rib for her age, a deep brisket, level topline & sufficient muscle on hindquarters to enable her to move with purpose. She is still immature, but all the right things are in the right places so far;

2 Partlett’s Janikastco Miss Hellfyre of Starolestaff, a month younger than 1, but more mature, standing very square, this deep red with white vest has superb pigmentation, she has a very typical head with a broad skull & perfect scissor bite, she also has excellent rib & brisket, this was a tough decision;

3 Dolphin’s Alport Black Ink.

JB (9,1)

1 Simpson’s Briganah Breaking Dawn, a b/br with a super head & expression, broad skull, pronounced stop & a short foreface all balanced with body, neat ears, plenty of rib, deep brisket with well set shoulders, level topline & moved well;

2 Morgan & Morgan-Pistor’s Biggleswick Whats On, a more traditional brindle, in fact gave the impression of being a more old fashioned type of Stafford, has a level topline, well sprung rib, deep brisket & powerful hindquarters & moved exceptionally well holding her topline level & striding powerfully;

3 Frankland’s Aldwych Tiger Lily.

YB (5)

1 Stanway & Cockayne’s Waystaff Double Strike, this pied bitch with a cheeky red patch seemed a bit bored, but nevertheless demonstrated many virtues with a shapely head, neat ears, scissor bite & overall balance. She has a broad front, powerful shoulders, level topline, super spring of rib & deep brisket;

2 Lewis’ Blazinstaff Forever Flame, red with white markings & excellent bone throughout, round dark eyes, broad skull & a scissor bite, plenty of rib & deep brisket, level topline, powerful & well muscled hindquarters & a neat tuck-up in loins;

3 Smith’s Willowstaff Keep The Faith.

GB (6)

1 Lewis’ Blazinstaff Temptation, an appealing brindle colour, almost bluish with white marking made this an interesting bitch to view, the Standard explicitly states ‘any shade of brindle with white’ so there can be no doubt this is a ‘legal’ colouring, she has large round eyes, a typical expression, neat ears, shapely head & a perfect scissor bite, she stands foursquare with a clean, muscular neck, broad front, plenty of rib & good bone throughout, her hindquarters are well muscled & she moved pretty well, holding a level topline;

2 Hart’s Albermarbull Sweet Pea, a strong headed & balanced white bitch with dark round eyes & scissor bite, she has a wide stance, plenty of rib, deep brisket & well muscled hindquarters;

3 Jones’ Seastaff Shooting Star at Penddraig.

PGB (7,1)

1 Reid & Booth’s Ramblestaff Take On Me, a very typy & well balanced b/br with a broad skull, round dark eyes, tidy lips & a scissor bite, she has a good front, well set shoulders, excellent bone throughout & powerful hind musculation, so moved well;

2 Turner’s Trawden Snowball at Quatros, white with red patch, this is a well muscled, fit bitch with plenty of substance, very strong head with a distinct stop & good mouth, good spring of rib, deep brisket & level topline;

3 Bowler’s Bethane Modjadji at Trelynbow.

LB (11,4)

1 Martin’s Lisas Lucky Charm at Alvis, a well balanced, fit red with white vest & dark mask, she has a shapely head, neat ears, excellent mouth, super round dark eyes & typical expression, her overall structure is sound with broad front, adequate rib & brisket & a level topline, she also has well muscled hindquarters & good bend of stifle & moved well. RCC;

2 Hart’s Albermarbull’s Red Revenge, a red with white markings & similar in many respects to 1, tidy ears, round dark, eyes, scissor bite & structurally sound;

3 Dewar’s Mintmar One For One.

OB (11,3)

1 Simpson’s Ch Briganah Black Orchid, a worthy winner of a cracking class, this balanced b/br has a super expression, round dark eyes, excellent head shape, neat tidy ears & lips, is well muscled, strong boned & fit & has a broad front, superb spring of ribs, deep brisket, neat tuck-up & level topline. CC;

2 Smart’s Ch Arnhem Nice N Feisty, a power packet of a r/w, balanced throughout & excellent mover, she has a typical head, round dark eyes, scissor bite & clean tapering neck, she is well boned & muscular with plenty of rib, deep brisket & level topline;

3 Blacker’s Ch Crossguns Memphis Belle.
