STAFFORDSHIRE BULL EAST OF ENGLAND 10 Judge(s) DR A S BRYDEN DCC RU CH TILLCARR TILLERMAN (MESDAMES K & Y JOHNSON & PUSHKO) Staffordshire Bull Terriers A decent entry when some have been not so good of late. Thank you also to the show management for providing an alternative ring although we did not use it, as I had reservations about the one scheduled. All was OK in the end. Because of the extreme heat I tried to get through as quickly as possible for the benefit of dogs & owners. Quality of exhibit was reasonable overall. Most had ample strength of head but some would have benefited from better definition. I was disappointed to find quite a few with light eyes, including several reds, something I noted abroad earlier in the year. This is of concern & corrective steps are needed urgently. Most had ample spring of rib & quality of bone but one or two spoiled their chances by lacking in this respect. A few were ‘pet’ rather than ‘show’ weight & would have benefited with a little less around the waist to give better body definition. Movement as ever was variable & being poor behind affected some placings. I was delighted to find a greater proportion of reds being shown. Although none took the top spots, one or two were knocking at the door & proportionately more were in the cards. I was also pleased to see a greater variety of colours among the brindles too, a welcome change from the preponderance of extreme blacks of recent years. Long may this continue. MPD (6,1a) 1 Chandler & Barrett’s Chanspire Vinnies Image, extremely promising 8 months brindle with all the attributes, lovely deep head with strong muzzle, dark eye, neat ears, straight front ample rib for his age, level topline & moved well, certainly one to watch & may well have the elusive X factor. BPD; 2 Hart’s Albermarbull Ice White, all white 8 months puppy of promise, strong muzzle, ample strength of head, good front & ample rib, good bend of stifle, moved OK. Could develop well in time but simply could not match 1; 3 Marlow’s Briganah Full Moon. PD (6) 1 Hemstock’s Jolihem Himself, very strong well made red, nice head, well boned, good rib, moved well. I would not like him to get any stronger overall but may fine a little & finish nicely with maturity. Could be of use to the breed, especially those with red lines. In challenge for BP, could not match the MP winner overall; 2 Chester’s Ryestaff Jack The Lad, lovely headed youngster with good stop, deep through skull, strong muzzle, well enough made but did not move as well as 1; 3 Wall & Webb’s Manark Predator. JD (8,2) 1 Galvin & Schofield’s Scousious Pretzel Logic, extremely strong top size, very typy black brindle, powerful head, strong muzzle & underjaw, good front, good spring of rib, ample bend of stifle, moved OK. Just needs to tighten up a little but this should come with maturity. Was in the reckoning & should go all the way in time; 2 Lewis & Smart’s Blazinstaff Blazin Justice, very attractive r/w with good head, deep stop & rise of skull, ample bone & bend of stifle, moved well, should have a bright future with maturity. Unlucky to meet 1 who just scored on strength & bone. Very close between the first three in the class; 3 Jones’ Jacknife Golden Ticket. YD (10,3) 1 Pretzel Logic; 2 Vokina’s Zakstaff Mister Ripley, very strong headed top size brindle all the way from Russia, extremely strong muzzle & underjaw, I would not like any more in this respect. Could not match the Junior winner for general balance, strength in body nor in bone. Moved well; 3 Folwell & Morris’ Rowellstaff Mr Ferguson. GD (9) 1 Blazin Justice; 2 Norris’ Fantazmic Megaboom, pleasing head with strong muzzle, good bite. Not as well put together as 1 & slightly longer cast. Moved OK; 3 Sutcliffe’s Pendlestaff Thunderbolt. PGD (7,3) 1 Clarke’s Jucrocs Sandras Red Sizzler, r/w with b/m, decent head, correct bite, nicely shaped body, straight front, good bend of stifle, moved well; 2 Scarlett & Reid’s Ramblestaff Ebenezer Good, b/br, pleasing enough head but preferred that of 1. Ample rib & bend of stifle. Would have liked a little more strength of bone & a little less on coupling which would improve body shape; 3 Gregory’s Wildstaff Mister Machismo. LD (11,1) 1 McGowan & Owen’s Crashkon No Stoppin Me Now at Tagstane, beautifully balanced compact b/br, smaller type than many in the ring & well within the Standard, lovely body profile, head not massive but great shape, strong muzzle & underjaw, round well placed eyes giving a lovely expression, nice straight front, good bone, well ribbed, short coupled. In the challenge I preferred rear movement of CC winner although this lad may have been a little cleaner in muzzle. RCC; 2 Lister’s Valglo Say Wot, strong headed dog with many virtues, good stop & muzzle, well ribbed, well bent stifle. Just not as well made all round as 1; 3 Asker’s Damarzic Don’t Tell ‘Um. OD (10,2) A very nice class as one would hope. 1 Johnson & Pushko’s Rus Ch Tillcarr Tillerman, well balanced Standard sized brindle with white flash, strong head, deep through skull, good stop, strong muzzle & underjaw, dark eye, straight front, tidy feet, well sprung rib, short coupled ample bend of stifle, moved well, a quality exhibit. CC; 2 Small’s Merimna Mind Your Own, pleasing b/br with most of the attributes of 1, good head, well boned, good feet. Not just as well made as 1. Held off a strong challenged from third, a very pleasing red which is perhaps greatly underrated; 3 Woollett’s Ashstock Red Miller. MPB (12,3) 1 Simpson’s Briganah Breaking Dawn, nice well made 7 months, b/br with decent head, strong muzzle, tidy feet, ample bend of stifle, moved OK, the basics are all there & time will tell. BPB; 2 Hunt’s Carnig Cheeky Rascal, promising 7 months little girl, good head, short coupled, just hope she grows that bit more to finish her off; 3 Hart’s Albemarbull Sweet Pea. PB (5,1) 1 Kemp & James’ Bekanbar Shining Star, pleasing young bitch, nice head with tidy ears, ample rib, preferred the rear movement of minor puppy in challenge; 2 Coble’s Surestaff Valantina, strong headed 9 months girl, strong head with good muzzle, deep skull, straight front, ample rib, moved OK. Carrying puppy fat at the moment but should fine down with maturity; 3 Nicholson’s Ballindona Bombshell. JB (11,5) 1 Trow’s Hubbulls The Promise, strong red bitch of great promise, pleasing head all round, nice straight front, good rib, moved well. Just needs to harden up & mature but her future’s bright; 2 Winwood & Tunnah’s Cursus Summer Storm, a tidy bitch all round, nice body but could not match 1 in head strength & definition; 3 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Hasini Bahiti. YB (7) 1 Raynsford’s Carribean Coco at Raynstaff, nice headed br/w, correct bite, good stop, dark eye, well developed cheeks, good spring of rib, moved OK; 2 Reid & Booth’s Ramblestaff Take On Me, b/br in same mould as 1 & many of the same attributes. Could not match in movement & would have benefited with a little less weight; 3 Hasini Bahiti. GB (6) 1 Booth & Grimwood’s Ramblestaff Jorja On My Mind, nice headed b/br, correct bite, dark eye, well ribbed, short coupled, ample bend of stifle, moved OK; 2 Gordon & Beattie’s Blazinstaff Red Ember at Lagdonstaff, well enough made red, good enough body. Lacked the finish in head of 1; 3 Gregory’s Willowstaff Shades of Red. PGB (10,3) 1 Higgins’ Spinnjack Mistletoe Magic, pleasing b/br, nice head with strong underjaw, nice ear carriage, good expression, ample rib, scored in movement but carrying a bit extra weight; 2 McPhail’s Nightstorms Next Top Model at Scorguie, strong bitch with deep through skull, straight front, good rib, perhaps stronger in head than 1 but could not match in backend; 3 Crick’s Jessie Rose of Crickelstaff. LB (13,3) 1 Barker, Ventham & Boot’s Ramblestaff Miss Demeanour, attractive short coupled, cobby b/br, nice strong head with good muzzle & underjaw, nice spring of rib & good bend of stifle; 2 Stanway & Albutt’s Crashkon Pussycat Doll, good typy bitch all round & similar to 1 in many respects so many of same comments apply. Just thought 1 was slightly cleaner & edged it on movement. Both these girls should be fighting it out in time; 3 Blacker’s But’s Charming Ruffians Zoom. OB (10,2) Only one word for this class – quality. The first four are (now) all worthy chs & could be placed in any order depending on preference. Even the fourth, the well known Molly Malone who will soon be in veteran, would not disgrace top spot & perhaps better than when I judged her as a yearling. A pleasure to judge this class. 1 Simpson’s Briganah Black Orchid, lovely headed b/br of great all round quality, nice straight front if handler resists over-stretching, spring of rib has come with maturity, short coupled, moved well, everything has been said about her before. Could not be denied despite the strong challenge. CC & BOB; 2 Baxter’s Ch Zakstaff Black Velvet, lovely headed girl who is now the mature finished article with decent spring of rib, short coupled & good bend of stifle. Little to choose between her & 1, which was a little tidier on a minor point or two. Had the little extra strength to hold off the strong challenge of the top quality third placed. RCC; 3 Hopkins’ Ch Trufflestaff Monifa Kanika. ARCHIE BRYDEN |
