STAFFORDSHIRE BULL NATIONAL TERRIER 22 Judge: Mr C Dillon & Mrs G McDermot STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE DOGS NATIONAL TERRIER 22 Dogs: Thank you to the National Terrier committee for inviting me to judge Staffordshire Bull Terrier dogs at their 2022 Ch Show, to my two stewards for keeping things flowing smoothly and to the exhibitors and spectators who took my opinions sportingly and provided a great atmosphere around the ring. It was truly heart warming to receive such a warm reception from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier fraternity. The standard of exhibit was very high in some classes and some decisions were very close and could/will change places on any other given day with another judge. My decisions and subsequent awards were made with soundness and lack of exaggeration in mind without compromise of breed type and I was very pleased with all my winners. Fitness and lack of muscletone was prevalent in a number of exhibits and I saw few with the desired muscletone, definition, lightness of loin or underline that would depict an active and agile dog. I would hate to see our breed go down the path of “of great size and strength” and the promotion of a coarseness that is not indicative of our breed, instead of the correct “great strength for his size” with an emphasis on balance. DCC - James’ Luthais Loch Ness. A superbly balanced Black brindle. This dogs conformation really caught my eye. Typey and contemporary Stafford head without coarseness with clean muzzle of sufficient length and breathing capacity, good sized teeth with perfect scissor bite. Dark and well placed eye, set off by neat rose ears to compliment. In front he exhibits perfect skeletal angles, lengths and bone girth, and width giving pleasing flowing line and correct weight distribution from shoulder to pastern (with slight outturn) and strong foot. From above he has lovely flowing taper from shoulder to loin exhibiting good rib, and in profile he exhibits a perfect topline with pleasing underline to compliment. He has a good rear showing correct angles at pelvis and stifle that facilitated flawless rear drive, true and purposeful on moving out and balanced in action with his fore when viewed in profile. All of the dogs virtue was superbly presented by his young lady handler who’s confidence belies her 10 yrs and allowed her dog to shine with similar confidence. Pleased to award him DCC... well done! RDCC - Rowe & South’s Illori Akinlana JW ShCM. Black brindle. A veteran dog that epitomises the standard wording of ‘well balanced, active and agile... being muscular and well defined’, sadly this was lacking in many exhibits today. A typical head, not overly done showing muzzle of correct proportions with clean lip and good dentition, large nostrils and defined stop, skull is deep through with discernible cheek muscles, dark round eye, ears are correct, though chooses not to use them to advantage (I don’t mind this, had many myself who did similarly and it didn’t detract). In front he exhibits nice width and depth of chest with good weight distribution from correctness of angles at shoulder, humerus and pastern. In profile he shows complimenting angulations on his front and rear and his footing facilitates correct weight distribution throughout Sound body properties and balance are enhanced by his lovely muscular definition. A very sound moving dog and this was the determining factor in awarding him the RCC. 1 Butler’s Alport On Tour. Promising b/brindle dog who exhibits a lovely outline. Nice front, straight and well boned, pleasing head with discernible stop, clean short muzzle and good dentition. Nice balance and proportion in profile and good topline leading to correctly angulated rear. Moved out well for one so young and pushed a very much more mature puppy dog all the way in the challenge. 2 Wilson’s Northstaff Nightmare. B/brindle with white chest. Another like first who excels in the virtue one would wish for in a puppy going forward. Lovely angles front and rear giving a correct and balanced picture from all angles. Typey head of the contemporary style with deep stop, short, clean muzzle and good dentition. A nice balanced pup. 3 Morgan’s Kalostaff Black Storm. PD 1 Day & Thomas’ Goldwyn First Edition To Jayalix. Red with white. Super young dog, muscular and defined, nice proportionate head clean muzzle with good dentition. Front is of good proportions, strong bone and exhibiting decent weight distribution. Body is short coupled showing good rib, taper from shoulder thru rib to light loin (again sadly lacking in many today) correct topline and complimenting underline with adequate tuck, correctly angled rear facilitating very good drive moving out, only immaturity and exuberance in forward action cost him in challenge on this day. A bright future. 3 Davies’ Jomelo Stand By Me At CwnHardd. 1 Day & Thomas’ Goldwyn First Edition To Jayalix (see 1st in Puppy Dog). 2 Harwood’s Marstaff The Revenant. Red/white, liked him a lot. Has the look and profile that appeals very much and I’m sure he will do very well. Good head, powerful but clean with a muzzle of correct ratio to skull and housing good dentition. Clean front with decent weight distribution (a little more angle at pastern would compliment). From above he flows from powerful neck with pleasing taper thru rib to a light loin. In profile he shows correct topline and complimentary underline (nice to see). Correctly angled rear accommodates powerful rear drive and sound footing (just behind pelvic line) when static. Moved out soundly. 3 Pycroft & Stevens’ Regalbull Enzo. 1 James’ Luthais Loch Ness (see Dog CC winner). 2 Bilton’s Bringanah Smooth Operator. A very nicely constructed b/brindle. Very much my type. Good head without coarseness, sound angulations front and rear, in good condition (muscular and defined). Correct topline with complimenting underline, pelvis angled to facilitate correct low set-on of tail and angle at stifle. Nicely tapered from muscular shoulders thru rib to light loin when viewed from above. A pleasing picture throughout but could not match first on this day. 3 Clarke & Ortizo’s Powerpack Lachlan Dorin JW. 1 Knight’s Kalostaff Dark Knight. Nice B/brindle, nice head of correct proportions. Clean muzzle of correct ratio and good dentition. He displays lovely angulations throughout facilitating good front and rear weight distribution and solid footing. Front is of good width and correct bone, topline is correct to an angled pelvis and low tail set, moved well too. The overall picture (like many) was spoiled by the exhibit carrying excess weight and spoiling his obvious aesthetic virtue. GD 1 Fairhurst’s Fairlenium American Pie. Very nice pied (black/white), excellent in profile where he displayed complimentary angulations front and rear with correct topline and an underline that flowed pleasingly from a chest of sufficient depth to tuck at abdomen whilst displaying discernible muscularity throughout. From above he displayed the taper and lightness of loin I sought, and on front he was well boned with good feet and weight distribution. He moved effortlessly and with ‘economy of effort’. Very nice dog who was considered in the challenge. 2 Funnell’s Powerpack Tam O’Shanter. Very nice B/brindle and white, who was balanced throughout. Nice head, strong but without coarseness. Clean muzzle of sufficient length and breathing capacity, good bite, dark eye and neat ears. From above he exhibited clean flowing, muscular taper from shoulder through rib to light loin. In profile he has correct topline and complimenting underline with tuck. Very good front with correct weight distribution through the angles and correctly angled rear, muscled thigh and low set of tail and turn of stifle. Moved out very well, but lost out to firsts superior economy of effort on the move. 3 Stanway’s Waystaff Crackerjack. 1 Johnson’s Ellchansha Hotshot. Super eye catching and stylish B/brindle that had it altogether. Looked super from all angles with just the right amount of fitness and muscle tone to compliment. Clean unexaggerated head with correct skull/muzzle ratio, clean lip, good bite, eye and ear placement all good. Good front showing balanced width and correct angulations from shoulder down to pastern and strong foot. Pleasing taper from shoulder through rib to loin, and with muscular pelvis and thigh when viewed from above. Correct angles at rear facilitating strong foot position (just behind pelvic line) when static and allowing purposeful drive on moving out. Lost out in the challenge for RCC to the slightly more efficient movement on the fore of the veteran. 2 Plumstead’s Callstaff Son Of The Moon. Lovely B/brindle who was quite similar to first in makeup, balance and virtue, but presented in a slightly stronger package. Good head again without coarseness, short muzzle in balance with skull. Front of good width and showing correct angulations and weight distribution down to feet. Nicely bodied, good rib and sufficiently light in loin. Strong pelvis correctly angled, low set on of tail and correct bend of stifle. Moved well both ways and in profile. Nice dog. 3 Van Wijk’s Jongenelis Pear From The South Hubba Bubba. 1 Wood’s Ch & Ir Ch Bultery Rollin Thunder. Cracking b/brindle that ticked all my boxes to win this hard fought class. Clean, proportionate head, good dentition. Hard and muscular throughout with clean front showing correct and complimenting angulations down to strong foot with desired slight outturn at pastern. Displays taper from shoulder thru to light loin when viewed from above, and equally pleasing outline when viewed in profile, with correct topline and complimenting underline. Good rear construction with solid muscularity and footing. He moved very well with a true driving action from the rear and good reach on the fore. 2 Arntzen & Manito’s Ch Catstaff Used To. Outstanding B/brindle who was much stronger all round than I expected though he is full of virtue. Powerful head, deep through skull, strong under jaw, balanced skull muzzle ratio, and good dentition. Front is of appealing width and depth giving an impression of both power and athleticism. Well bodied, pleasing topline and strong, angulated pelvis providing correct angulation at stifle, and facilitating powerful movement. I would have preferred him a fitter, but his qualities are easily discernible. 3 McConnelogue’s Ch Lonemoor Polara. 1 Rowe & South Illori Akinlana JW (see RCC winner). 2 Clarke’s Rowellstaff Ooh Aar Cantona. Lovely red boy who was in great condition. Strong typey head without exaggeration, muzzle of sufficient length and ratio and pleasing eye/ear placement to compliment. Well boned front showing correct width and depth at chest. Tapered from muscular shoulder thru rib to light loin and strong pelvis when viewed from above. Correct topline and pleasing underline when viewed in profile. Well muscled thigh with correctly angled stifle and strong rear footing. Moved out well and was at one with his handler throughout. 3 Lewis’ Ch Biggleswick Splash Of Ginge. |
