STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE DOGS NATIONAL TERRIER 19

DOGS Thank you National Terrier committee for electing me to be one of the two judges. Such an honour, a dream come true. I really enjoyed my day and had a fabulous entry & quality Staffordshire Bull Terriers who travelled far and wide. My appreciation to the exhibitors and to all who attended, importantly the exhibitors without you there would be no shows. My appreciation to my fabulous stewards Gary Hinsley & wife Alison who kept the ring running smoothly and the exhibitors informed of my instructions, thank you guys, job well done. Thank you once again to the exhibitors who gave me the honour for my opinion. It is that my opinion on that day, and no doubt these places will change on another day. I was really happy with my decisions and the support shown by the spectators & exhibitors, it was most appreciated. The roof lifted with happiness for all. Stafford folk are the best the best in the world really, keep it up don't let it stop please. We are the envy of other breeds at how we roll. I was impressed with the overall condition and found NO health concerns in the breed. Temperament was 100% reliable as it must be. I found only one converging canine. A concern I have from last time I judged males is some were over done in excess flesh round the face, and a minority too much muscle definition around the shoulders. Gladly not too many BUT this must not happen in our BREED. We know what they were bred for does not happen now, but, like all breeds, FIT FOR FUNCTION must be high on our agenda as breeders. There were some with very thick flesh inside the mouth where it was impossible to find the teeth. Not good. Movement: It is all well and good to be stacked pretty, but it has to move to get from A to B without little exertion. A few moved so close behind hocks were touching. No strength and power. Fronts: Only a couple were loose at the elbows, overloaded shoulders, on moving front legs were like a pendulum. If these can be addressed. My co-judge Paul Quinn and I judged the first 2 classes together, Special Beginners Dog & Bitch. Also Veteran Dog & Bitch. I must say these 2 classes did cause some concerns to the exhibitors. 'What if's' were muted. So National Terrier please, with the entry you get from us can we have these classes separated instead of mixed? I am sure you will make more entries.

Sp Beginners (5)

1. McCarron-Tuer's Elitebull Avenger. A young dog who did catch my eye. B/B who was so full of breed type at this young age. Correct shaped head with a rose ear which he used to advantage. Dark pigmentation throughout. Clean tight lips which housed a perfect bite. Very sound in front with enough bone to like. Short compact body. Moved perfectly. Well presented.

2. Rogers' Ginstean Second Chance For Ynysstaff. A very promising bitch, same remarks as 1 but opposite sex. Very clean lines. A beautiful feminine head with a good round eye, not too short in stop with a scissor bite. No loose flesh underjaw. I liked her front which was true with the right of amount of bone. Chest just beginning to develop and ample rib. She moved effortlessly. Well done.

3. Hall's Legendstaff Sweet Lady Cum Geordiestaff (Imp). As the name applies. Stood four square and moved so effortlessly. A short compact little bitch. On maturity will swap places. Her coat was in excellent condition too. Well presented.

Vet (8, 2).

Judged jointly by myself and Paul Quinn.

1. Hirst & Bibby's Ch Taraiel Ciara JW Sh CM. Always been a admirer of this stunning bitch. Fits the standard like a glove. Still holds her head shape with excellent ear carriage, very good pigmentation, very clean around the face with no exaggeration. Her front is so true and still possesses her level topline on the move. Moved so freely, well done.

2. Hammond's Hammystaff Heaven Knows. A bitch of different style to 1. Another in the standard height & weight. Strong in head with correct ear carriage, still a good expression. A little longer in stop but was so clean in lines. Powerful shoulders & hindquarters, she moved with drive once settled, she made her handler work this one.

3. Gabel's All In One Of Spirit-Staff's. Another favourite of mine. B/B who is growing old gracefully. 3 different styles of bitches, but all good in their own competition. Still possesses a strong head with correct eye shape. Short compact body, kept her level topline on the move. Well done.

MPD (7)

1. McCarron-Tuer's Elitebull Avenger. Winner of Special Beginners class. An outstanding puppy I will watch with interest. Well done in turning him out in fine fettle.

2. Desmond's Elitebull Charger. Striking puppy who has the head shape in one so young, very good dark pigmentation with a keen expression, correct bite with tight lips. A sound front and enough bone to like, chest just dropping with enough brisket at this age. Short on back and coupling, level topline and moved effortlessly. Well presented.

3. Farrimond's Ashstaff Jesse's Dark Prince. This one demanded attention. Head enough to like, clean in foreface with correct bite. Longer in back than 1 & 2. Maturity on his side, he has a good tail set and moved with drive.

PD (8, 1)

1. Makin & Porter's Waystaff Moon Shine. A most handsome puppy in all departments. In the standard and as a puppy should be. I loved his balance and clean lines, no excess wrinkle on this predominantly white with red. Very good pigmentation, head maturing as it should, could have used his ears to show off his great expression. Short compact body with ample ribs. He moved freely. Well done, he was BPD.

2. Corcoran's Molru The Navigator. A b/b who oozed quality. I liked his head shape better than 1. He is so compact in body with great shoulder placement, correct bone & tight feet, ample brisket and tucking up nicely. Very strong in hindquarters. Loved these 2 puppies. He made his handler work today to secure 2nd. He was so eager to please and thought it was play time, I can live with that. Well done.

3. Brennan's Nerotoro Broguez. A b/b. Again different style to 1 & 2, but another good one from this kennel. Just lost out on maturity, it will come. Head of correct proportions with the correct ear set, longer in stop than 1 & 2 with a very strong neck into a good front, chest just dropping, he was longer in back than 1 & 2. On maturing could make a good example of the breed. Well done on presenting him expertly.

JD (17)

1. Gough's Manark Made To Measure. A beautiful red, I just loved this dog, so full of breed type. Possesses very clean lines throughout. He has a strong head without being coarse, perfect rose ears which he used to give him the desired expression, very dark pigmentation. Pronounced cheek muscles with a correct bite, tight in lips with a powerful underjaw, muscular neck leading into perfect shoulder placement, correct round bone with tight feet. Very good spring of rib with short coupling, well muscled hindquarters and kept his level topline on the move, he moved with drive and power. I will watch this one with interest. Expertly presented. He was considered for higher honours.

2. Rhodes & Pritchard's Taraiel Reaper At Teracota. B/B, who again was quality, unfortunate to meet 1 today. Not an overdone dog, very clean lines throughout. In the standard height & weight. A head of good proportions with no excess wrinkle, round dark eyes with correct fill in under them, not too short in stop with huge nostrils, tight lipped with a scissor bite. Not over muscular in neck, front assembly strong with chest maturing, ample ribs, short on back with tuck up apparent. I would have preferred a little more muscle on hams. He moved with drive with hocks well let down.

3. Anguio & Vazquez's Diamonds Of Blanch Valentino Hurricane. A well balanced pied in the standard. Correct head shape with dark round eyes, perfect bite in tight lips. Short compact body, moved a little close on hindquarters. Maturity on this one. Well presented in good condition.

YD (6)

1. Preston's Tillcarr Fire Starter JW. A dog that has to be judged to feel the quality. A very smart b/b who appealed to me with his overall balance. A head so typical and clean, no loose skin around the face, he used his well set rose ears to advantage to show a keen expression without bait. Dark pigmentation and good nostrils. Tight in lip with huge teeth, powerful underjaw, a neck that was strong without being overdone, leading into muscular front and feet turned out ward a little. Chest not too deep with ample ribs, a very good tuck up. A shade longer on the back. Moved effortlessly. Maturity on this one he will trouble the best I am sure. Very well handled. Well done. Looked impressive in the line up.

2. Nicholson's Northstaff Poster Boy. A b/b. Different style to 1. Again maturity on this one also. Smaller all round but in the standard. Strong in head, ears a little erratic but still showed a keen expression. Muscular short neck into powerful shoulders, short on back, enough brisket, could be lighter in loins. Well muscled hams and moved with purpose. Expertly presented.

3. Paronneau & Desmazes's Na La Race Dann Ker Salaozy. Well that was a name. A very good example of the breed, just lost out on maturity today. Possesses the correct head with rose ears, dark round eyes and dark nose, cheek muscles just about there with tight clean lips. Ample ribs with level topline. Moved a little nervous, so maturity is the order of the day for this one. Gently presented.

ND (3)

1. Halifax's Jackstaff Dopelganger. A top size red who is so balanced. A head so typical of the breed strong without being over done, a rose ear, with very dark pigmentation. A good fill in under the eyes which gave him the expression I was looking for. He is tight lipped with correct bite. Front developing with not too deep chest, good spring of rib, a tuck up apparent, a little longer on the back but kept his level topline on the move, well muscled hindquarters. A bit unsure of his surroundings but when settled moved soundly.

2. Mackenzie & Lavery's Drumburn Silent Catcher. A smart brindle who stood four square, in the standard height & weight. Not overdone in head with correct ear carriage, tight clean lips no excess flesh and powerful underjaw. A well muscled neck into well laid back shoulder placement, ribs beginning to develop, tight feet which turned out a little. He moved a little close in the hock area but enough to like. Well handled.

3. Murray's Cinfel Melodies Tailor. A lovely colour red whose coat was gleaming. Stronger all over for me than 1 and 2. Head of good proportions with round eyes, shows a keen expression. Scissor bite with huge teeth. A well muscled neck with powerful shoulders, too much for me. Deep in chest with a good spring of rib, could have been lighter in the loins. Expertly presented.

GD (4)

1. Boyle's Kargonstaffs Katana. A brindle who demanded attention. Up on leg which gave him his clean outline. So balanced from his strength of head shape to the tip of his well carried tail. A head of correct shape without being overdone. Ears and eyes with an underfill under gave him that keen expression. Huge teeth in tight lips, not too short in stop. A neck that showed power into well defined shoulder placement, deep in chest with well sprung ribs. Level topline on the move, he did move with parallel motion, I would have like more muscle definition on hams at this stage. Well presented.

2. Wilson's Northstaff Notorious. A b/b, another of quality, in the standard. Correct in head shape with the desired rose ears and darkest of eyes, very good pigmentation throughout. Has a good round bone to like, short compact body, coat tight and in good condition. Level topline on the move, his feet were tight and turned out a little when stacked. I would have preferred a little more muscle on hams on this one too. Maturity is on his side. Expertly handled.

3. Thisby's Taurinstaff Fist Of Fury. A short compact brindle with a strong head shape, a very good expression typical of the breed. Tight clean lips with a good bite, short muscular neck into heavy shoulders. Deep in chest with enough spring of rib, muscular hindquarters. Maturity on this one also will help.

PGD (10, 1)

1. Major's Maxsta Floyd Lord Of The Went. A male of quality, caught my eye for sure. B/B with defined head piece without being overdone, well set on ears which he used to his advantage. Very good pigmentation, neck of enough length into well laid shoulders, I would have preferred a little more maturity on brisket. He had a good tuck up loins with correct tail carriage, muscled hindquarters but moved a little close in the hock so work in progress.

2. Roper & Hook's Trawden Ice Cool. A red/white male who has quality to like, in the standard with strong enough head shape with very good dark eyes and lips. A powerful neck, deep chest with ample ribs, possessed a level topline and nicely tucked up. A little longer in back than 1. So maturity on his side. I would like his feet to be tighter. Well presented coat in gleaming condition.

3. Harkin's Harkline Conor McGregor. B/B of correct size, stood four square with head developing, perfect bite and tight lips. Enough bone, front needs to mature still. Short on back, moved parallel.

LD (17, 1)

1. Lee's Molru Throwing Shapes. Bang in standard with well defined head with no excess wrinkle. A correct ear placement with dark round eyes. Not too short in stop with a good fill under the eyes giving the desired expression. Pronounced cheek muscles, correct bite. He has a muscular neck of correct length, front not too deep, ample ribs for heart and lungs, level topline, good bend of stifle. Moved with drive. Well handled.

2. Axe's Harleys Choice JW. A striking b/b who also has to be hands on to assess his great virtues. In standard height and weight. I loved his powerful head shape all round with the very darkest of pigmentation. Piercing round eyes with a fill in under them, no weakness in cheek muscles with a good bite, lips. Very muscular in neck which was not too short, very clean in shoulders with muscular definition, deep chest with well sprung ribs, short compact in the body with a level topline, muscular hindquarters and a well bent stifle. I would have preferred a little lighter in the loin area, that was my deciding factor between 1 and 2. He moved effortlessly and expertly handled, well done.

3. Zibolka & Kolassa's Blazen Staff's Enchanted Snowflake. A red/white male of quality. Head of enough strength without being overdone. Alert expression with correct ear placement, pronounced cheek muscles and has a perfect bite in clean lips. Short compact body with a tuck up in loins, level topline on the move. 3 very nice Staffords here. Expertly presented.

OD (17, 1)

1. Schack's On The Highway To Hell Great'n Glory. A most impressive b/b male, a class act to follow really. He oozed quality in my opinion, from his powerful head which is typical of how a Stafford male head should be. From a 100 yards we want to be thinking well that is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier no mistake. He possessed a rose ear and perfect round eye, pronounced cheek muscles and not too short in stop, NO breathing problems here. A wicked expression, he has a good bite with huge teeth, no excess flesh inside the mouth. A muscular neck into powerful shoulders. The correct round bone on legs with deep chest and ample ribs. Short on back with a correct tail carriage, I liked his well defined hindquarters, a good let down of hock, he moved so effortlessly. A picture from all angles. My preference if mine, I would like the feet a little bit tighter more road than grass work. Congratulations he was my CC today and BOB on referee's decision.

2. Wood's Ir Ch Bultery Rollen Thunder Ir JCH. WOW I can see why he has done so well. I just loved him. A real head ache this class, all 3 were/are top notch Staffords. A b/b who fits the standard to perfection, in height and weight. A different style to 1 but not taking away his quality too. Well defined in head with no wrinkle about the face, ear and eye place perfect with excellent pigmentation and huge nostrils. Clean in lips with a very good bite, strong underjaw into a muscular neck which just had the right amount of length, superb front into not overdone shoulders with enough brisket, a level topline with correct tail carriage, perfect bend of stifle, hocks well let down, tight feet which were turned out correctly on standing. A decision had to be made on these 2, tough call, I would have preferred a tiny bit more muscle on hams, that may have persuaded me. He was my RCC on the day. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to assess him. Well done.

3. Higham's Ch Callastaff Lakeland Lad. WOW. I have seen this male from afar a b/b, who again must be assessed for his quality. I just loved him too. The best head of the 3 BUT there is more to it than head, other components had to be considered in this quality class. Perfect rose ears with excellent pigmentation throughout. A good bite and clean in lips, I loved his keen expression, alert at all times. Short compact body with tight feet, a level topline and moved with drive, the perfect bend of stifle and hocks well let down. I would have liked him a tad lighter in loins. Expertly presented as always. These 3 I would like on my couch, not all together mind. Thank you for bringing them.
