STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE DOGS NATIONAL TERRIER 15 Staffords DOGS – My thanks to the National Terrier Club committee for the opportunity to judge dogs at this prestigious show; it was both an honour & a privilege. To all those exhibitors who supported me – thanks for giving me a try; I had a very enjoyable day & I thank you for the chance to assess your dogs. I was very pleased with all my winners & especially those receiving the top awards. With my co-judge’s amicable agreement the dogs went BOB & BP. MP (6) 1 Rowe & South’s Illori Akinlana, an eyecatching 7 months b/br with a lovely clean head type & keen expression. Excellent mouth, dark eyes & neat ear carriage completed the picture. Clean enough off the front, sufficient lift for balance, well angulated rearquarters, moved out positively. A promising youngster of the type I like. BPD, & in agreement with my co-judge, BP. Well done, I will watch his progress with interest; 2 Rowbotham’s Elitebull Black And Brass, b/br of 8 months & a slightly smaller package than 1. He has good balance & a well proportioned head with an excellent mouth, clean muzzle, good underjaw, lovely dark round eyes, good stop, tidy ears & neat feet. He does not quite have the ‘lift’ or is as clean on the shoulder line as 1, but is nevertheless a very attractive puppy who should do well; 3 Marshall’s Marstaff Master Lee. P (6,2) 1 Vidon’s Jack The Lover De La Vauxoise, a very smart 9½ months skewbald of the make & shape I prefer. His handler stands him too wide, but when set up properly he has a lovely clean front. He has good overall balance, being short coupled & in sufficiently good condition for age, although slightly down on pasterns & topline needs to settle. He has a clean head & strong muzzle, complemented by correct mouth, neat ears & dark eyes, correct rearquarters & moved out well; 2 Lee & Coleman’s Bullhawk Archie Bold, 11½ months b/br white front. A nice type of puppy with an attractive head complemented by very dark eyes & neat ear carriage. He is clean enough in the muzzle with a good underjaw & pleasing expression. He has good balance with a straight front & is sufficiently fit for a puppy. Somewhat playful on the move which made him hard to assess. His young handler needs to relax a little & I am sure this will result in a successful team; 3 Manito’s Dynastaff Northern Soul. J (9,1) 1 Hirst & Bibby’s Taraiel Busta Rhymes, a good quality brindle dog of 14 months who is a shade more compact/cobby than I prefer. He has a lovely head & expression, dark eyes, tidy ears, is clean enough in the muzzle & has neat feet. He is not overdone, has good bone & sound rearquarters. A dog who is difficult to fault & he won today on maturity/overall virtue & in the final line up seemed more relaxed & looked better for it; 2 Jack The Lover De La Vauxoise, a very nice puppy of the style I like who pushed 1 extremely hard, but in the end gave way to maturity; 3 Balebona’s Alebastaff Home Rum. Y (9,1) 1 Butler’s Ramblestaff Cos I Could, 20 months b/br with white front & feet. A nice type of dog presenting a balanced outline with sufficient weight of bone. He has a well defined head with attractive expression, complemented by dark round eyes, neat ears & correct mouth. He is clean enough in the muzzle, has correct bend of stifle & moved out well with a level topline. Would prefer him a shade harder/fitter; 2 Morris’ Garwstaff New Boy Studs, 21½ months mahogany brindle white front. A stronger dog than 1 with a little more ‘lift’ & a shade lighter in the eye. He has a functional head without excess flesh, having a strong muzzle with good depth of underjaw, excellent dentition, defined cheek bumps & clean enough in the lip. He has tidy ears, good bone, neat feet & correct bend of stifle. He is short coupled with a level topline & moved out well. Prefer him stood a little less wide in the front; 3 Lewis’ Kentstars Apollo. N (1) 1 Dean’s Kylestaff Muddy Water, 9½ months b/br white front. Res in Puppy. Difficult to assess in the puppy class due to being unsettled & erratic on the move. He has a well proportioned head with correct ear carriage, good muzzle length, very dark eyes & correct mouth. He has sufficient bone, good bend of stifle & presents a clean enough outline. Prefer a more level topline, but has time to settle. G (4,2) 1 K Muddy Water; 2 McClements’ Stormfire Billy Boy at Jodanzac, 2½ years red white front. Attractive head of correct proportions & pleasing expression. Eye shade in keeping with coat. His ears are neat & thin & he has a good mouth & underjaw & is clean enough in the muzzle. He is well boned with good width to front. To be critical he is stronger than I prefer & lacks bend of stifle. PG (16,1) 1 Romijn’s Aldgillis They Stood Up For Love, b/br of 5 years & presented in fantastic condition with a gleaming coat. He is well balanced, short coupled, has a level topline & sufficient bone although errs towards the lighter side. To be critical he is not quite as clean on the shoulder line as I would prefer. Head of correct proportions with good length & strength of muzzle, correct dentition, strong underjaw, neat ears & good width to front. Feet could be tidier; 2 Lindsay’s Revelry Dark Destroyer, b/br of 2 years. A bigger type of dog all over & a shade on the strong side for me. However he has a superb head & expression with defined stop, dark enough eyes, neat ears & correct dentition. Front straight & well boned with clean shoulder line & neat, well padded feet. He is of good balance with sound rearquarters & moved out well. Would benefit from being slightly fitter; 3 Boler’s Denagar Jack. L (16,1) The best class of the day for depth of quality with several of the type I prefer. All five dogs placed I would be proud to own & these three in particular I believe to be outstanding dogs & all were presented in superb condition. Unfortunately with only two top awards on offer, it came down to ‘nit picking’ in order to separate these & the Open winner. 1 Stanway’s Waystaff Diggers Double, a top quality red with white front of 4 years with excellent pigmentation, having black mask & nails. Superb head with alert expression, fantastic strength of muzzle & a punishing underjaw. Dentition is excellent & he has the darkest of eyes & neat ear carriage. He is clean enough off the front & slightly stronger boned than 2 or 3. Body in good condition & well proportioned with excellent front & rear angulations. Moved well & with ease once settled, albeit a bit spirited at times. A masculine dog possessing just the right amount of bone to exude strength without coarseness. Delighted to award him the CC (attaining his title on the day), & in agreement with my co-judge, BOB. Congratulations to all associated with his success; 2 Boulton’s Nizeva Quiet Riot, 3½ years b/br. Another excellent dog & a smaller package than 1. However he is very well balanced, in lovely condition & clean as a whistle all round. He has a defined head of good strength with a very attractive expression with dark, round eyes, neat ear carriage, good strength of muzzle & correct mouth. He has a straight front, correct rearquarters, neat feet, level topline & sufficient bone. Another who moved out well once settled & presented a clean unexaggerated outline. Just preferred the strength & harder expression of 1; 3 Pendleton’s Bullhawk In’a Pickle. O (11,1) Another trio of quality dogs. 1 Fernandez & Martin’s Itcheboren Moster Show, mahogany brindle of 5 years. A quality dog who is clean all round, presenting a super outline without exaggeration. He has a great head which is very clean & well defined with good muzzle strength & correct mouth. Dark eyes & correct ears contribute to a tremendous expression. He has good bone, straight front, enough width & neat feet. He is well balanced, in fit condition, medium coupled, decent topline & moved out well. A dog of the type I like. Note to handler: please do not string him up as it stretches his neck & spoils his outline. Very pleased to award him the RCC, well done; 2 Frankland’s Aldwych Tokyo Joe, b/br of 5½. Similar in type although not quite as dark in the eyes or possessing the head strength/expression of 1. However he presents a very clean outline & is balanced all round, without exaggeration. Another quality dog of the type I look for. He has a head of good proportions with a pleasing expression, good width to chest, neat feet & a level topline. Correct mouth, not as strong in the muzzle as 1 or 3, but a nice type of dog who was shown in fit condition & moved out well; 3 Stanway’s Waystaff Strikes Out. JENNY SMITH |
