STAFFORDSHIRE BULL MANCHESTER 20 Judge: Mr Laurie Ford - Dogs BEST OF BREED : 7089 LEE, Mrs L A & Mr D A & COLEMAN Mr Berrystock Enigma Black STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE DOGS MANCHESTER 20 Dogs My thanks to the committee for inviting I to judge the Dog classes at this wonderful show held at The Staffordshire County Showground. The entry of 89 Dogs actual making 92 entries was fantastic and my sincere thanks to those who afforded me the honour of assessing their dogs. The quality here today was as diverse as I expected with lots of positives for me to take away but coupled with a few negatives. The aesthetics applied to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is that of opinion and that opinion can only be formed by guidelines given by the description of the breed. Our dogs should appear to have great strength for size, but also to be agile and athletic. The balance of the two is in my opinion the absolute ideal, not always easily achieved but is what we should all be striving to produce. Pleasing was there were no serious dentition problems, the swan like necks seem to be a thing of the past thankfully and shoulder angulation appears to be improving (there were dogs here today with fore chest) as do top lines hence the improvement in hind angulation, which has been a real concern to me over the years. The clapped down croup and over angulated hind quarters is a weakness and although aesthetically pleasing is so wrong for this breed. Bone density is also improving and whilst always loathe to promote a heavier boned dog it is an essential element to retain strength of bone in our breed and indeed our breeding programmes when we come to consider original function, again a balance of components is essential. Being an exhibition, exhibits should always be presented in optimum condition both in cleanliness and fitness and whilst the vast majority were clean there were a few that were badly let down by their owners in the cleanliness department as with overall fitness levels. Short in couplings is not achieved by a short back and far too many (again my opinion) were ultra - short in back giving the appearance of a blocky immobile animal. My overall view is that we are once again heading in the right direction with the breed having sustained a period of aesthetically pleasing dogs and bitches that were quite frankly not truly representative of the breed being more elegant than robust, combine the two and we have the ideal Staffordshire Bull Terrier. MP (7) 1 Plumstead Callastaff Son Of The Moon is a black brindle which headed a very good class. He has all the attributes at this age to suggest a bright future. His head is broad and deep with distinct stop, eye and ear shape and placement are pleasing giving a good expression. His front is true as is his top line and hindquarters. He has just about the desired amount of rib for me and presents a balanced picture throughout. He moved easily and was presented in the condition I would expect at this young age. He is a very eye catching young dog. Was pleased to award him first place in this class and eventually BPIB in agreement with my co-judge. 2 Guiver and Barren Borgstaff Nightswatch is very similar in description to the winner with many of the attributes applying here. Black brindle of immense overall quality. I just preferred the head shape of the winner of this class but I’m sure another here that will go on to greater achievements. 3 Scotland and Hedges Callastaff Song To The Moon. P (10,1) 1 Williams Jodels Impact is an up to size fawn and white presenting a picture of strength and athleticism. Strong shapely head with neat and tidy ears correctly placed. Strong, clean muzzle of good length. His short neck flows into a broad front. Level top line and thick muscular well turned hindquarters. His coat and condition is testament to his well being. Moved very well when he settled. In absolutely superb condition this young fella will no doubt go on to trouble all he comes up against. 2 Murphy Brockmar Crack On is a black brindle with a strong powerful but not overdone head. He has a broad and deep skull, distinct stop and uses his ears well. Short in neck and back his fore and aft quarters are nicely made to ensure he has a fluid gait. Another presented in top condition it really did come done to splitting hairs between 1 and 2. Think these first two could be battling it out in the future for top honours. 3 Cherry Brockmar I Am Titanium. J (13) Lovely class of Junior dogs here. Close call on all decisions. 1 Hillman Chalexstaff The Heathen standing four square this young boy presents a balanced picture. Black brindle with white socks he has lots to like. Strong head with defined well placed features which all adds to a pleasing expression. Short strong neck into a broad and wide front, well ribbed to a strong loin and muscular hindquarters. In good coat and condition he moved very well. Like him a lot. Came up against some really strong competition here today. I’m sure his days of achieving greater prizes are not far off. Well done and good luck. 2 Thomas and Griffiths Gazstaff Black Magic is another out of the top drawer. Shown in lovely condition this boy ranks with the best of junior dogs. Overall a picture of balance and athleticism. His black brindle coat is gleaming and tight fitting. Hard to the touch he has a strong head of good shape, muscular body and powerful hindquarters. Moves very well. Had to dig deep here to decide on 1 and 2 but personal preferences edged him into a closely fought and well deserved second spot. 3 McCarron-Tuer Elitebull Avenger. Y (13) 1 Bergstroem Dk Staff’s Rocky Raccoon is a quality act. This young dog is so well balanced and has lots and lots of ring presence. Shown in tip top condition this boy will always be up there challenging for the top honours. Today he had strong competition from a quality entry. His head is chiselled and clean displaying a keen expression. Short muscular neck into the best of fronts. His body is well ribbed and strong powerful hindquarters drive him with effortless ease. His coat is short and tight fitting as I expected from my initial cursory look. Such a hard decision in the final line up but can assure the owners this boy wasn’t overlooked in the challenge for the CC. An extremely well made dog handled to perfection! 2 Makin and Porter Waystaff Moonshine. This white/red pied is another quality act from a top kennel. He has a pleasing head shape, which is strong and defined. Muscular body an good quarters particularly hind where and abundance of muscle ensures he is driving along with power. I liked him a lot, unlucky to come up against the winner. 3 Corcoran Molru The Navigator PG (9,2) 1 Funnell and Wiggins Powerpack Kilgobnet is a black brindle of athletic build. He has a shapely skull with good length of muzzle, tight lips, tidy ears which he uses to advantage to enhance a pleasing expression. Good length of leg, depth of rib and hindquarters are well turned to produce a good drive. In lovely coat and condition. 2 Farley Homafar Last Chance is a strongly built black brindle. Very much a powerhouse. He has a strong head, which is broad and deep with a distinct stop. Good size to him and in super condition. Wish he’d have used his ears to advantage. 3 Wise Montgomery Guard L (20,2) What a fantastic class! For me the strongest class of the day. Too many worthy dogs to go cardless. 1 Thomas Pridesdale The Guv’nor. This red boy is a stallion! Up to size with bags of presence. He demands your attention and he certainly got mine. From my initial cursory look to the end of judging this class he gave the impression of sheer brute power with the combined quality of finesse in the right places. I can easily compare this to a combination of Mike Tyson and Muhammed Ali. His head is near perfection, broad, deep and with the cleanest of lips and distinct stop. His round forward facing eye drilled into me with a menacing determined expression which I found fascinating. His short muscular neck flows into a well made front with the neatest of feet which in turn moulds into a rib cage that is deep, well sprung and of length. His strong short loin whipped him around like a coiled spring as could be seen in his relaxed state in the ring. Superbly angulated and muscled hindquarters ensured he moved as I hoped he would, freely without wasted effort. In his short mink like tight jacket he dominated this class with sheer presence. What a machine!! Thank you for bringing him and thoroughly deserving of his first CC. I’m sure it won’t be his last. 2 Boyle Kargonstaffs Katana what a lovely specimen of the breed this dark brindle boy is and obviously gets his owners attention as can be seen by the superb conditioning of this boy. Deep, broad skull with neat well set ears. Dark eye of good shape and placement, muscular, toned body all over with excellent angulation. He moved like a dream and is a real credit to his owner. Very well done. I’m sure this lad will make for top honours. 3 Roper and Hook Trawden Ice Cool O (16,3) 1 Desmond Ch. Elitebull Challenger what can I say about this well known and deserved champion that hasn’t been said before. As always presented in stunning condition this black brindle shows like a dream. His head and expression are like a magnet drawing you in. So pleased to have got the opportunity to go over him again and he has certainly fulfilled all my expectations. Thank you for allowing me the privilege once again. Pleased to award him the RCC 2 Schack On The Highway To Hell Great N Glory. Another favourite of mine that I have admired for some time. Today he came up against some of the breeds current best and he held his own. A dog of immense quality whose black brindle coat shines with vitality. Strong powerful head which sits on a short neck into a clean well made front. Ample spring of rib into a strong loin. Driven by lovely correctly angulated hindquarters. Handled to perfection by his owner/handler. Thank you for bring him. 3 Johnson Ch. Tillcarr Fire Coanda V (4,1) Thank you for bringing these great representatives of the breed. 1 Ryan Ch. Ruberlica Starscream doesn’t seem like its 6 years since I awarded this boy a RCC from puppy class. Still maintains all the attributes today as he possessed then just a bit greyer like us all! Great head which is clean and defined, best of top lines which he holds on the move and is in good shape for his age. Tidiest feet I think I’ve ever seen on a Stafford. Well done! 2 Stone Uk. Norw. Swed Ch. Zakstaff Rumour Has It JW quality black brindle of advancing years that still has bags of energy. Super head and expression, nicely bodied and run the winner to the wire. Lost out on1st spot on a minor point. 3 Kimber Kimstaffs Harry Potter Judge Laurie Ford
