STAFFORDSHIRE BULL CRUFTS 14 Staffordshire Bull Terrier Judge(s): MR J R PUGH(D) - MR M CLARKE(B) Terrier Group Three
STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE CRUFTS 14 Staffordshire Bull Terriers DOGS – My thanks to the Kennel Club for allowing me the privilege of judging at this the most famous of dog shows. My thanks extends to the owners/handlers for allowing me the opportunity to examine their dogs, especially those who had travelled long distances, I fully appreciate the dedication & commitment this involves. To the spectators whose instantaneous furore at the completion of each class was most encouraging & to my stewards who carried out their duties so admirably. All this went to make the occasion for me so rewarding & memorable. As you might expect with all the exhibits having gone through the qualifying process the majority were good representatives of the breed, many very good dogs were unplaced which gives some idea as to the overall quality. As always there were one or two that the question of who qualified them might well be asked, however someone authorised to do so had so their decisions must be respected. Handling & presentation was in the main first class. Baiting the dogs, however, now appears to be getting out of hand & at times does nothing to help. It is inevitable that evolutionary changes in regards to how the breed will look in the future will occur, if however breeders & judges continue to keep the features that are depicted in the Standard paramount then I feel sure the breed will continue to be recognised from any other. If however these features are ignored in my opinion it will be to the detriment of the breed. V (12) What a lovely class to start with. To examine these dogs who are now coming to the end of their show careers & thinking how much pleasure they must have given their owners, I felt very privileged indeed. 1 Davies & Mace’s Ch Stormbull Solo, the overall condition of this d/b gives you no indication of his age. He balances out so very well having a classic head with the attributes of dark round well placed eyes, rose ears ideally set & carried. His mouth is still correct with the teeth showing no signs of aging. He moves with ease & responds so well to his handler. I recall awarding him a RCC in 2007 & he was up there challenging for this same award today; 2 Glassbrook & Rhodes’ Captain Ron, d/b, balances out well with a good head shape, broad skull with well placed eyes & good ear carriage. Excellent spring of rib, short coupled to well angulated hindquarters. Moved freely & shown in a condition that belies his age; 3 Albero & Garcia’s Ch Staffgold Peacewalker, d/b, other than showing a little greying around the muzzle he was shown in first class condition. It is easy to see how he obtained his titles. He balances out so very well & moves freely maintaining a good topline. He responds well to his handler who did very well with him. P (15) These youngsters made me feel quite optimistic about the future of the breed. 1 Kerry’s Mysticbulls Storm Trooper of Antroboss, d/b, a young dog who is showing a lot of promise, he is all I would want at this age. He is good in overall size, his head is well proportioned with a correct mouth, good depth to his muzzle. Straight front with well boned legs & good feet. His fore & hindquarters are developing well & he moves well for one so young. Shows a lot of confidence. Well presented, in lovely condition; 2 Thomas’ Biggleswick Funky Devil, r/pied, predominantly white. Nicely balanced, good head shape & matched up in the body, having a good spring of rib, short coupled to hindquarters that provided a good action. Presented in first class condition &handled well; 3 Gabel’s Earl Boogie Of Spirit-Staffs, red. A little less mature than 1 & 2 but this could be to his advantage later. Not a large head but well proportioned having a correct mouth, dark round eyes & good ear carriage, lovely keen alert expression.
