STAFFORDSHIRE BULL CRUFTS 13 Staffordshire Bull Terrier Judge(s): DR A BRYDEN(D) Staffordshire Bull Terriers DOGS – Firstly, can I thank those who supported me with an excellent entry which was a pleasure, despite one small ‘glitch’, to judge. Out of 180 dogs entered, there were only 14 absentees which is excellent. There were many quality dogs present oozing type, especially in the top classes, where many really good dogs went cardless, & the veteran class. Size on the whole was pretty Standard although one or two otherwise quality dogs were just a little on the tall side. In the past I have complained about a general lack of rib, but cannot on this occasion as most had ample spring. Mouths were good as was to be expected. Fronts & front movement were largely good but poor rear movement affected the placings in some classes. Some dogs, mostly in the lower classes, puppy excepted of course, were a bit soft & could have done with some hardening off. In addition some were rather stuffy on the neck with shoulders that tended to be overloaded, some lacked on bone & some feet could have been better. Coats were on the whole pretty good throughout, all dogs were in clean condition as befits the occasion. Can I also thank the ‘paparazzi’ for being so well behaved. I understand how so many, especially our European friends, like to photograph the winners on what is often a special trip. You kindly waited till the placings had been made & kept well back to allow me to make my critiques. I just hope you got the good photos you wanted. Lastly a vote of thanks to my stewards, George & Sharon, who did an excellent job all through & controlled things very well when the little ‘glitch’ compelled me to have a small enforced break. V (12) A pleasure to judge this class of golden oldies. My first four dogs are worthy chs & it was great to be able get my hands on the first three as I had not judged them in their younger days. 1 Davies & Mace’s Ch Stormbull Solo, still has all the attributes that made him a ‘top dog’. Lovely head, strong bodily with well sprung ribs, short coupled, moved well. Is still capable of competing at the top level & even winning CCs; 2 Ford’s Ch Valglo Jeff’s Choice, another lovely headed br/w, short coupled, well ribbed, good bone, in top condition. Pushed 1 all the way but preferred 1 on a couple of small points; 3 Jackson’s Ch Stormbull So Wot, yet another worthy ch who is by no means past it, has most of the same attributes as 1 & 2 but preferred their expressions & felt they both moved that bit better behind. These three along with the reserve, made a great foursome to start the day. P (13) 1 Barnett’s Drakostaff Baldurs Blade, well balanced b/br, pleasing head all round which is developing nicely, well boned, straight front, ample rib, moved well. BPD but had to give way to a top quality red bitch in the final challenge; 2 Beeby’s Geordiestaff Dynamo Dexter, another promising b/br with similar attributes but not so well developed. On the day could not match 1 in the head but as ever with puppies time will tell; 3 Stanway’s Waystaff What A Cracker, br/w of promise, good straight front, well boned, decent head but the distribution of his white can spoil the picture from the ringside. Unfortunately was never fully settled on the day. J (19) 1 Branten-Simons’ Frisian Staff’s Enter Sandman, very promising b/br Dutch youngster, good strong head, deep skull, neat ears, well boned, nice straight front, short coupled, scored in movement over 2 especially behind, one to watch & could go all the way if campaigned properly; 2 McGowan & Owen’s Tagstane Analyse This, brindle with white flash, has many pleasing qualities, nice head, straight front, tidy feet, ample rib, moved well in front; 3 Kimber’s Kimstaff’s Harry Potter, very well balanced b/br, sound fore & aft, moved well, has no serious faults but could not match 1 & 2 in the head although it could come more with maturity. Y (17) 1 Choma & Matviakova’s Satip Sorboss at Vrabarbull, another well balanced b/br who could do very well in the future, nice head all round, good straight front, tidy feet, well ribbed, short coupled, correct bend of stifle, moved well; 2 Lavrova’s Sikaistaff Dark Lord, b/br with many of the same attributes of 1, however 1 was that bit better balanced all round & scored in rearend; 3 Lewis’ Charmonics Regal Lad, br/w, well balanced all round with no exaggerations, moved well. Could not match 1 & 2 in the head & feet were not so tidy. UG (12) 1 Horton & Dunn’s Albmermarbull Running Riot, well made red with white flash, pleasing head & expression, decent front, ample rib, short coupled, moved well; 2 Gordon’s Geordiestaff Running Riot, b/br who like 1 is a good all round dog, decent head, well boned, nice tidy feet. Very little to choose between 1 & 2 & just preferred 1; 3 Nicholson’s Zoellies Northern Star for Ballindona, very well pigmented red, pleasing head which would benefit from better ear carriage, well enough made bodily but 1 & 2 scored in movement. G (12) 1 Smith’s Staffash The Hurricane, very attractive w/r, pleasing head, nice dark eye, good expression, well ribbed, short coupled, ample bone, moved well; 2 Groen’s Old Cross Guns Stirs The Soul, another Dutch dog from across the water, b/br, another with nice head & expression, plenty of bone, ample rib, short coupled. Just not as well made all round as 1; 3 Clemens’ Crossguns Best Friend, very strong headed b/br, good expression, neat ears, ample rib, short coupled, moved OK. Unfortunately a bit stuffy round the neck which affected his chances. PG (15) 1 Goddard’s Kernewekglas Fellowship, well balanced br/w, Standard size with no exaggerations, decent head, ample bone & spring of rib, short coupled, moved very well which helped him to win the day; 2 Speed’s Speediestaff Black Velvet, another who scored on balance & movement, ample bone, tidy feet, well enough ribbed, ample bend of stifle. Would have liked a touch more head strength & definition, hence the placings; 3 England’s Engstaff Made In England, well boned stronger type, head although deep & strong could perhaps be a little cleaner, straight front, moved OK. ML (18) 1 Winwood & Tunnah’s Antroboss Tempesta Nera, stood out in this class, very much Standard sized, lovely head & expression, tidy ears, good stop, dark eye, good straight front, well ribbed, short coupled, tidy feet, should now be reaching his peak; 2 England’s Engstaff Hey Joe, another brindle with a good strong head, good bodily, moved well. Not so tidy in the feet nor had the overall balance of 1 but decent specimen nevertheless; 3 Dearman’s Blazinstaff Sacrifice, r/w in good condition, nice head but colour split can be deceiving. Good bodily with ample spring of rib, moved OK. L (29) Very strong class with quality in depth coming to the fore. 1 Fulford’s Staffstyle Burning Heart at Bokido, very smart r/w, well balanced although his all white head can deceive the eye, good head with broad deep skull, dark eye, nice rose ears, broad straight front, well boned, good tidy feet, well ribbed, short coupled, moved OK. Would hope he will go on to greater things in the near future. It was a close thing between him & second in Open but just scored in rib & a well deserved RCC; 2 Cooch & Maud’s Gnobulls Funk Odyssey, another good r/w, just not quite as strong in the head as 1 & ears not so tidy. Well made all round & well balanced, moved well; 3 McGowan & Owen’s Crashkon No Stoppin Me Now at Tagstane, beautifully balanced b/br of Standard size, gorgeous head, lovely front, well ribbed. Unfortunately could not compete with 1 & 2 in rear movement although front movement is fine. O (38) What a class! Certainly the best for quality in depth I have ever judged. This meant raising the bar extremely high, resulting in so many good dogs who might expect to be placed on many, if not most, other occasions going cardless. It was a pleasure to go over such a class. 1 Corcorran’s Ch/Ir Ch Zakstaff Whats The Story, mature b/br out of the top drawer now at his peak, lovely head, deep through broad skull, strong muzzle & underjaw, good bite, dark eye, well boned, straight front, short strong neck merging into well placed shoulders, good spring of rib, short coupled, correct bend of stifle, moved soundly, scored on maturity, in tip-top condition & a fine example of the breed. Pleased to award him the CC; 2 Plant’s Ch Kyraloebis Italian Gigalo, another excellent Stafford & many, if not most, of the comments about 1 apply equally to this lad. Although he has now turned two years of age I think he has some maturing to do & his best days may still lie ahead over this year & next. At the moment he cannot quite match the CC & RCC winners in spring of rib & this affected my placings as indicated above. A very worthy ch nevertheless; 3 Evans’ Ch Kalhol Dark Maruda, another very worthy b/br ch, now just turning 5 years of age, out of a similar mould to 1 & 2, similar comments about his virtues again apply so I won’t repeat myself, but a little taller & top sized. Like all the main winners he was in excellent condition & a credit to his young owner who handled him beautifully. GC (5) 1 Fairhurst’s Fairlenium’s Snow Patrol, strong well made brindle pied, good head, straight front, well boned, good rib, moved well. A decent dog all round; 2 Fletcher & Seedhouse’s Jsy Ch Granitangel Zircon, pleasing little b/br, basically well made all round, straight front, ample rib, short coupled. Preferred the expression of 1; 3 Fairhurst’s Yorks One Time for Fairlenium, an oldie from veteran now going a bit grey as we all do, clearly has been a good dog in his day & is still a typy specimen.
