STAFFORDSHIRE BULL DOGS JUDGE CRUFTS 12

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER - DOGS

I would like to thank all exhibiters for their support and sportsmanship - the crowds around the Stafford rings were the biggest and the loudest (!!) which is testament to the affirmative passions this wonderful breed evokes and deserves. I would also like to take this opportunity to make some general comments about the overall entry. On the whole, dogs were handled well and presented in good condition. Rightly or wrongly, I was taught that Terriers should have perfect mouths and perfect feet, so I was very disappointed to find so many mouth faults - misplaced lower canine teeth are a particular issue but I also found small teeth, crooked teeth and undershot and overshot mouths. This is not a good situation for the breed to be in and was not the case 20+ years ago. Additionally, front feet should "turn out a little" - not face forward or be pin-toed; there were misplaced toes on front and rear feet, and toplines and movement were poor in a number of exhibits - mostly due to them being sickle hocked. For some breeders the term "shelly" has been long since forgotten. However, on a more positive note, it was nice to see an entry with a wide divergence of type and colour and I was very pleased with the overall soundness of construction and movement of my winners. On the whole, heads were not exaggerated and fortunately, as far as "Breed Watch" is concerned, I found only a handful of exhibits which were short in muzzle.

What an outstanding Veteran class - some dogs of exceptional quality here.

1 Trunova's Int Ch Thorax First Thyme. Handsome and well knit red in stunning hard condition for age (9 years). A standard dog of exceptional quality, totally balanced with bone and substance. Very sound construction, excellent moving dog, one of the best movers of the day. Handled expertly.

2 O'Donohue's Master Chankast. Black brindle in good fettle. Impressed by his overall soundness. Compact and well knit. Typical head and skull. Correct front, shoulders strong and muscular without loading, forelegs perfectly straight and well boned, pasterns upright. Muscular hindquarters. Correct movement. Handled well.

3 Ridley's Ch/Ir Ch Jagsstaff The Advocate. Not in such hard condition as first and second. Excellent head, clean and typical. Correct mouth, dark eye, rose ear. Forelegs straight, strong, and well boned. Wide front, good depth of brisket, well ribbed, level topline. Moved freely and with drive from well flexing hindquarters. Handled well.

1 Nolan's Trufflestaff Black Warrior. I was very taken by this exceptional black brindle (15 months). Well balanced and compact with enough substance and bone. Square in outline with well proportioned body. Good size. Excellent head and expression, nothing over exaggerated. Superb front, correct spring of rib and brisket for his age. Well developed hindquarters. Movement was parallel, free and balanced with good reaching forequarters and discernible drive from the hindquarters. Handled well to Best Puppy in Breed (Referee decision). I am sure this young dog will have a great future.

2 Thomas' Ashstock Knight Shadow. An excellent future prospect. Different build from first, correct, but not as compact at this stage. Typical head and expression. Correct front - enough brisket and rib for age - developing along correct lines. Hindquarters well constructed. Moved and handled well.

3 Fulford's Staffstyle Burning Heart. Attractively marked red and white pied. Loved his head, strong and deep through, good ear carriage. Correct front, plenty of width, shoulders strong and muscular without loading. Well shaped body with good depth of chest from withers to brisket. Level topline. Correct hindquarters. Moved soundly. Handled well.
