STAFFORDSHIRE BULL DOGS JUDGE CRUFTS 10

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

DOGS – I thoroughly enjoyed my day judging this magnificent breed of ours at the world’s most prestigious show with a fantastic entry of dogs. Thanks to all exhibitors for a numerically pleasing entry during this economic downturn, & to the Crufts committee for offering me the appointment. Special thanks must go to my excellent stewards for keeping everything running smoothly & efficiently, therefore allowing me to concentrate on the task in hand, I feel privileged to have had their invaluable contribution.
The negatives: I was surprised to find dogs with inverted canines popping up quite regularly in the classes before post grad, this fault I feel should be penalised & hopefully not overly perpetuated, it can seriously affect the dogs ability to close its mouth correctly without causing at least discomfort & ultimately damage, to the roof of the mouth.
Feet need attention in breeding programmes I feel, disappointingly there were far too many with thin flat, & even severely splayed feet, that no amount of road walking will offer improvement to.
A number of dogs who looked impressive stacked, ‘fell apart’ on the move & were duly discounted, mainly due to untypical forward motion from their rearquarters. Also a couple of really nice examples were unplaced due to their handlers not allowing their charges to get into ‘gait’ when asked to move, therefore I was unable to properly assess their movement & therefore general structural soundness, I was unsure of their reason for this, some may have been inexperienced handlers - some were not.
A fair number had over-large heads with too much dome to skull, some as wide as a house brick & ultra short fleshy muzzles & thick lips, these were penalised accordingly. Some heads in profile arguably would not look greatly out of place on some breeds in the working group.
The positives: There were fit, healthy, well conditioned dogs in abundance, the majority were typy & in hard condition, showing good musculature & apparent skeletal soundness. I was looking for in the main: good clean heads without lippiness or exaggeration, good bite of course, true fronts, level toplines, tightly fitting coats, well angulated quarters, good balance & movement along with good blend of the bull & terrier, & of course a high level of overall soundness & fitness. I awarded my placings accordingly looking for virtues rather than faults.
Temperaments were as usual fantastic, not a murmur from a single dog while undergoing the indignities of the required physical inspection of some of their most private ‘components’ while still appearing to own the ground they stood on.
Handling was in general to a very high standard, the exhibitors were very courteous toward me & most seemed gracious in defeat if not placed, & there seemed to be a positive ‘buzz’ around the ring which all assisted in achieving a good atmosphere. Thanks go to the exhibitors/spectators who came forward to shake my hand on completion of judging, topping off a day I will remember for the rest of my life.

V (9,2a)

1 Baxter’s Mosstaff King Louie, impressive b/br of correct proportions in good order, beautiful head shape & expression, neat ears & dark eyes, true front stood on good legs & feet, level topline, good ribs, presented well tucked up to loins, moved well;

2 Davis & Mason’s Zulash Arrow, another well proportioned b/br, not quite the head of 1. Has enough ribs, good topline, good strong quarters;

3 Hopkins’ Pride Of Time, red who moved well, good head although his ears are a touch heavy. Liked his front, topline & quarters.

P (13,1)

1 Williams’ Hubbulls Nebraska, very impressive red youngster who fits the Standard, well put together with correct amount of bone, true straight front, nice clean head, not overdone in the skull & decent length to his muzzle, holds his ears well, correct topline, nicely tucked up to loins, good bend of stifle, moved well;

2 Lewis’ Blazinstaff Defiance, cracking r/w pup who pushed 1 close, but I preferred Nebraska’s size. Very alert expression on this boy, great ring presence, good stop, neat ears, compact in body, well up on his pasterns with lovely topline, strong well angulated quarters;

3 Ferrer & Boggins’ Zakstaff Toby Tobias, not sure if this was due to excitement or disappointment but this b/br dog’s young handler failed to stay in the ring for a critique. Thought he was well balanced, topline good, nice head, in good condition. Did well to beat 4th who pushed him hard.

J (24,3)

1 Winrow’s Jayneze Soul Survivor, very neatly built b/br dog who slots well into the Standard, showing excellent balance & construction, admire his level of fitness, presented lean, fit & hard (no surprise then on learning of his affix), ample clean head, correct skull to muzzle ratio, neat ears, dark eyes, good expression, another with a level topline, moved well;

2 Folwell & Morris’ Rowellstaff Mr Ferguson, very nice red who pushed 1 close, he is stronger boned but just lost out on topline & rear angulation. Like his front, his dark eyes, his expression & pigmentation, good muscle development to his quarters;

3 O’Sullivan’s Bullhawk Code Black, top size b/br who impressed with his overall sound construction & correct proportions, good shape to his head with the desired skull/muzzle ratio, good front. Preferred feet of 1 & 2.

Y (22)

1 Dewar’s Mintmar Just The Man, b/br white chest, Standard size dog with good head, clean lipped, good stop, not overdone in skull, correct reach of neck leading to good shoulders, nicely rounded bone to his legs, quite a wide front but stood foursquare, strong backend, nicely conditioned;

2 Pettifer & Churchill’s Shadonour Check Me Out, nice brindle who is well put together although he is maybe just a tad lacking in length of muzzle & not quite as clean in head as 1. Strong neck, level topline, good feet & quarters, in good condition & impressed with his muscletone;

3 Dolphin’s Alport Tornado, b/br who has a good clean head with distinct stop, true front, good enough topline. Not quite as well tucked up as 1 & 2. Correct set-on of tail.

UG (15,1)

1 Kozlorek’s Fear Of The Dark Berserker, Standard size b/br who has a very impressive head, clean as a whistle, his skull to muzzle ratio is absolutely correct, not overdone skull with ultra short muzzle here, this boy is in my eyes, the epitome of conformation & balance, not exaggerated in any department, tight feet, well up on his pasterns, lovely level topline without appearing rigid, moved soundly with enough drive, but showed economy of effort, correct quarters, in fit hard condition with the desired amount of covering, no loose flesh, lovely tight fitting shining coat. Handled with expertise to CC, referee’s decision for BOB went to the bitch;

2 Gibbons’ Crossguns Fred Astaire, brindle who is slightly taller than 1, well constructed example who again displays the desired Stafford expression, his ears are neat & his head well shaped. Not quite the topline or reach of neck of 1. Good shape to his ribcage, well tucked up, good angulation to his well muscled quarters, turned out it good order;

3 Norris’ Fantazmic Megaboom, another b/br who fits the Standard & shows a correct well boned front on good feet. Maybe not as clean lipped as 1 & 2. His topline, ribs & tuck-up are all good, sound backend.

G (12,1)

1 Alden-Smith’s Smylinatya Audacious Boy, quite impressed with the soundness of this b/br, cracking head with dark well set eyes, good cheek muscles, stands foursquare on well boned legs & good feet, good pigmentation, shoulder placement & ribs, level topline, good tuck up to loins, well muscled hindquarters;

2 Clark’s David Brown, red at the upper end of the Standard regarding his height, he may be a shade longer in the back but still displays good construction & balance. His front is straight & true, decent ribcage. Preferred the feet & quarters of 1. Overall a sound specimen;

3 Ferreday & Wilkes’ Thunder Flashy Lad at Kelianne’s, powerful b/br who has a good front, heavier built example but would not describe him as overdone. Good head although I prefer the ears of 1 & 2. Strong rearend.

PG (25,2)

1 Tittley & Bosanko’s Willowstaff New Addition at Garwstaff, very tidy brindle who is soundly constructed & showing excellent balance, he is a good blend of bull & terrier & I would certainly describe him as fitting the ‘fit for purpose’ requirement, he definitely appears happy, healthy & agile, good head with ample stop & correct skull/muzzle, clean in lip, just enough bone, straight front, well let down at hocks;

2 Evans’ Kalhol Dark Maruda, nice typy b/br, in good order, appreciate his conditioning, hard but not bunchy muscles, head shape is correct, has neat ears & round dark eyes giving the desired Stafford expression, correct topline, pushed 1 hard;

3 Woodhead’s Longdrive Domino, strongly built pied boy possessing a good head. He’s more of a bully type than 1 & 2, turned out in admirable condition, ample ribcage, good feet, well tucked up to loins.

ML (21,1)

1 Patterson’s Penshannel Wicked William, extremely well balanced rich red dog with a touch of class about him, another fitting the description of a good blend of bull & terrier, not overdone whichever way you view him, everything fitting together nicely, cracking head, full of expression, neat ears, powerful underjaw, good skull, lovely true front, correct weight of bone to legs, stands on good feet, admirable topline & tuck up, well angulated quarters, a contender for the top honours;

2 Callaghan’s Bourtie Wot A Boy, powerfully built b/br fitting the Standard well, yet another with a very impressive head displaying a cracking expression, lovely round dark eyes, neat ears, decent front on amply boned legs & correct feet, well pigmented, excels in topline, in excellent condition with good tuck up & correct quarters;

3 Allemande’s Old Cross Guns Daigh As An Diabhal, another impressive b/br completing a trio of well balanced examples of the breed. Like his head shape, correct eye shape & placement, good expression, well muscled compact dog, ample ribs, pleasingly conditioned & a healthy sheen to his coat.

L (26,2)

1 Marachowska & Marachowski’s Kalhols Black Magic at Passernomen, very well balanced Standard size b/br who oozes class, typy dog with lovely clean head, round dark eyes set correctly in his skull to look forward, his owners have obviously made the effort to present him in tip top condition, loved his muscletone & tuck up, just giving him the edge in the final line-up for 2nd spot against tough competition from ML & Open winners. Good strong well angulated rearquarters, moved soundly. RCC;

2 Powell’s Cwmcalon Son Of The Lord, yet another one who impressed me greatly, he was unlucky to come up against 1 & could easily swap places on another occasion, similar comments apply, I’m sure he will have his day & if he hasn’t already got among the CCs, his time will surely come. Soundly built with lovely front on tight feet, lovely small neat ears, his condition is a credit to his owners;

3 Beaufoy’s Wyrefare The Governor, another red who will always be there or thereabout, balanced & soundly put together, in good order, correct front, shoulder placement, decent topline, well let down hocks with good second thigh.

O (39,7)

What a class! Certainly not enough cards to hand out, I can honestly say I had dogs who I was greatly impressed with, who didn’t even make the first cut. I would not expect it any other way in Open at the world’s most prestigious show.

1 Byrnes’ Ir Ch Lackyle Diabhal Dearbhchlo, well proportioned top size b/br with quality in abundance & soundness & type to match, like his head with clean lips, ample stop & good skull to muzzle ratio, good expression, his reach of neck is bang on from where it blends nicely into correct shoulders which are amply laid back, has enough bone & is well up on his pasterns, good tuck up with well defined waist, decent enough backend, fit active & agile dog who may well go all the way. Was in for a serious shout for top spot, but felt he just lost a little sparkle in the challenge;

2 McGrath’s Jajca Phoenix From The Flame, at the conclusion of this class I thought this dog could well be coming in later to challenge for RCC. Exceptionally fit top size red, in beautiful condition, with that touch of class that can take him to top honours, I was surprised to see on reading my results booklet, that he was not a titled dog. Full of virtue & hard to fault, cracking head shape, lovely straight true front & well angulated quarters. Really hard to separate these first two, nitpicking when I say he is a shade longer in couplings;

3 Stanway’s Ch Waystaff Strikes Back, exceptionally well put together dog who moved particularly well around the ring, has a cracking head, good expression, good sound front, strong quarters & a decent topline, although he falls away ever so slightly at the croup. In hard condition but with a shade more covering & not quite the tuck up of 1 & 2. A top quality dog.

GC (10)

1 Morrell’s Niatona The Boy Wonder, good b/br fitting the Standard well, who was unplaced in a tough limit class but shone here. Typical head & expression, well boned legs on good feet, ample ribs, nice topline & well tucked up, fairly short coupled with strong backend, in good condition, moved & handled well;

2 Mourant’s Dennis The Menace, pied dog of a more bully type, strong headed lad who is well put together but not the balance of 1;

3 A Tornado.
