STAFFORDSHIRE BULL DARLINGTON 11 Judge: Mr G Hinsley STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE DARLINGTON 11 Staffords A really pleasing numerical entry with very few absentees. I was pleased to be able to remain in the outside ring as the wet weather rings are invariably troublesome. A few concerns for the breed are, mouths, the Standard asks for “teeth large with a perfect, regular & complete scissor bite, ie upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth & set square to the jaws”. It was a struggle to find many that you could apply that to, a misplaced tooth here & there maybe OK? but far too many are evident for me & “tight” canines appeared on enough exhibits for it to be a concern. Toplines & rear angulation, more so in the dog classes are these a concern, far too many with over angulated rears leading to absolutely awful toplines on the move as well as when “stacked”, also what happened to the “distinct stop”?, too many heads without this creating an almost foreign expression. As an aside, handlers, you pay so much money to show your dogs these days & you get a couple of minutes to show them to their maximum for the judge, make it count, you’re not walking in the park, do it with some conviction & purpose, it can make a difference. One thing that remains constant is a bomb proof Stafford temperament. I was pleased with my main winners, I tried to select Standard exhibits without exaggerations & with enough substance & constructional virtues for them to be fit for function. VD (1) 1 Fairhurst’s Yorks One Time for Fairlenium, br/w, grand old lad of 8 years, retains his virtues & most importantly his happy Stafford temperament, nicely shaped head, well sprung ribs, his fitness is a lesson to some of more than half his age, moved well & has less grey on him than this judge!. BV. MPD (4) 1 Johnson’s Tillcarr Fire Marshall, br/w, neat Standard sized puppy with some good attributes, nice head with well set ears, nice front construction, well sprung ribs. Little long in stifle; 2 Jones’ Howfenstaff Midnight Lad, b/br, another neat young exhibit, fitting the Standard nicely, strength in head, enough bone & rib, moved nicely. Not the overall picture & clean lines of 1; 3 Asker’s Dazmarnic Dear Boy. PD (8) 1 English’s Engstaff Made In England, brindle with strong head, correct bite & neat well set ears produce typical expression, at this age he has enough brisket & rib, moves soundly & maintains good outline with level topline. BPD; 2 Stanway’s Waystaff Strikes Out, pied, slightly taller than 1, straight front, neat head shape with correct dentition, nice enough shape to rear of collar. Rear fell away slightly on the move; 3 Motley & Clarke’s Jucrocs Red Phantom. JD (13) Class somewhat spoilt by poor toplines & over rear angulation. 1 Lister’s Mafia Don at Listcall, br/w, good Standard exhibit in gleaming condition & hard to the touch, strong enough head without being overdone, neat well set ears, correct front construction, decently sprung rib & powerful rear thighs all added up to nicely moving sound package; 2 Membury’s Mitstaff Fun To Flex, br/w, another good exhibit who fits well into the Standard, slightly stronger in head to 1, good straight front, ample rib & short enough in coupling to powerful rear. Rear movement didn’t quite live up to 1’s but was better than most of in this class; 3 Cartwright’s Zackstaff Game On. YD (6) 1 Gibbs’ Wannevilles Chinese Zodiac, b/br, neat Standard exhibit of good type & construction, strong head, correct bite, darkest of eyes & well set ears, good rib & tuck-up, moved well, held his shape on the move & in top nic; 2 Corbett & Swinburn’s Blazinstaff Diversity, br/w, good honest Stafford, slightly taller than 1, markings could detract from well proportioned head if not looked past, straight in front, well made behind collar. Didn’t quite hold outline on the move as 1; 3 Kerry & Windwood’s Antrobuss Tempesta Nera. GD (3) 1 Fairhurst’s Fairlenium’s Snow Patrol, pied, unplaced in previous class. Strong head with correct bite, enough behind collar for him to grow into, moves soundly; 2 Fletch & Seedhouse’s Granitangel Super Giant, brindle, still a young puppy, strong lad who has some maturing to do, not the front or movement of 1; 3 Moffat’s Sheikastaff Perfect Storm for Maremmrob. PGD (8) Mixed class. 1 Dolphin’s Alport Tornado at Delphinstaff, b/br, slightly lighter bone than I deem to be required but he is very well put together, particularly sound in movement & that helped him win this class. Good clean lines all round, well muscled rearquarters, well held topline on the move; 2 Hyde’s Sedgebred Black Diamond, b/br, heavier in type to 1, Standard height with good head, straight front, nothing overdone. Would like little more definition to him, not the movement or topline of 1; 3 King’s Kylorda Kalil. LD (11) 1 Jones’ Blazinstaff Light My Fire, red with white markings, nice exhibit who fills the eye & fits the Standard well, has strength in well shaped & defined head, good front & well developed rearquarters, has the desired components to make up a sound free moving exhibit, in top physical condition, his animation in challenge was enough to win him the RCC; 2 Marlow’s Briganah New Moon, b/br, another of top type & construction, little stronger in construction than 1 but not overdone at all, grand head, front straight, angulation fore & aft correct. Wish he’d have just shown me a little more spark & used ears more to advantage himself. Nice exhibit; 3 Davidson’s Waystaff Dutch Minister. OD (17) Large numerical class with varying types & quality of exhibit. 1 Peacock’s Dringshaw Stoner, red with white markings, grand exhibit, powerfully built & exuding type, every time I looked at him he just cried out Stafford at me, strong head, correct bite, dark eyes, neat ears & well developed cheek muscles all go together to produce head of strength without coarseness or exaggeration, straight in front, well placed front angulation, enough rib, good tuck & powerful rear construction, in prime condition. In the challenge showed me he was here to win & lit up when I asked him to shine. CC; 2 Albero Garcia’s Sp Ch Staffgold Peacewalker, b/br, powerful headed exhibit of some substance, correct bite & neat enough ears here. Tighter flews would paint a tidier picture. Good front & the strength continues behind collar, good rib & short coupling to well defined rear. Not the movement of 1 & a little jaded when bought back into challenge for RCC; 3 Bradley, Bird & Page’s Ch Amystaff Devil In Disguise. VB (1) 1 Fletcher & Seedhouse’s Rockstaff Chaos at Granitangel, brindle, grand old lady of the ring, a little lame. Retains shining coat condition & appeared to very much enjoy her trot around the ring. MPB (1) 1 Matthews & Patrick’s Howfenstaff Paddy’s Girl at Paljaz, b/br, nice pup with neat overall shape to her, nice head with correct dentition, pretty good all round angulation, moved well for such a youngster. PB (5) 1 Hart’s Albermarbull Fire N’ Ice, w/f, just 9 months, classically shaped & proportioned head, neat ears & eye shape, good bite, correct angulations fore & aft when viewed side on, moved well holding nice shape; 2 Moody’s Moodystaff Lady Luck, b/br, slightly heavier type than 1, neat enough all round, good head, bite & ears, well constructed bodily. Moved OK, not as clean in outline as 1; 3 Bryan’s Valglo Lucia. JB (14) 1 Summerfield’s Canakey Sweetpea. f/w carrying good virtue & type, nice head shape, correct bite, good all round angulation with well muscled rear, correct pigmentation, true movement holding level topline. Just looked a little jaded in the challenge; 2 Davies’ Sebsonic Shinealight at Stormbull, b/br, tidy exhibit, also of good virtue & type, neat head shape, correct bite & dark eye, good rib & coupling, moved very well. Not the toning of 1 in rearquarters but giving a fair bit away in age here, came back into challenge for BP & was not to be denied; 3 William’s Bellajazz Annalisa. YB (11) 1 Hawken’s Carfury Bal Maiden, b/w, reserve in fairly strong jun class. Nice exhibit, plenty to like, of Standard proportions, good strength but not a doggy head, dark eye & neat ears complete desired expression, good conformation all round which is easy to see through her shiny tight fitted jacket, moved well & in top condition; 2 Hurst & Bibby’s Taraiel Rhianna, b/w, nice neat well defined exhibit with a lot of the aforementioned attributes to her credit also. Moves very true but she was so lacklustre it had to cost her here I’m afraid; 3 Draper’s Herodotus Well Lush. GB (3) 1 Jackson’s Roughnecks Daggers Drawn, mahogany/br, well off for bone & substance without coarseness, viewed at any angle she is a lovely shape, correct bite & strength in under jaw that was the deciding factor for her to win this class, lovely outline on the move showing her conformation; 2 C Bal Maiden, just preferred strength of underjaw of 1 3 Pinder’s Paddy’s Hydaspes at Dusk. PGB (10) 1 Roger’s Waystaff Desert Orchid at Berrystock, b/br, classy exhibit in top physical order, pleasing head shape with clean enough flews, good bite, dark eyes well placed, straight in front, nicely sprung rib & powerful rear well muscled quarters, moved well, challenged hard at the end; 2 Jones’ Kalhols Shining Star, br/w of not dissimilar size & shape to 1, her virtues are also mainly comparable except outline on the move is spoilt by tail carriage, not quite in physical shape of 1; 3 Coble’s Surestaff Valentina. LB (11) 1 Frankland’s Aldwych Tiger Lily, b/br of slightly lighter bone & substance than I deem to be required but has more than enough virtue to appreciate. Very clean cut lady of no exaggerations, straight front & good head shape, correct bite, clean flews, nice dark eye, nicely proportioned behind collar, moved well, in great physical shape which sealed her win here; 2 Higgins’ Spinnjack Mistletoe Magic for Acrestaf, b/br, slightly taller than 1 with a bit more bone to add to her balance, clean lines, moved well. Better waist line would have made it a difficult decision between these 2. Strong quarters, nice shiny jacket; 3 Stanway & McCulloch’s Waystaff Sea The Stars. OB (13) Trio of top class exhibits headed the placings. 1 Trow’s Ch Hubbulls The Promise, red with excellent pigmentation, really top class exhibit with no exaggerations in head, bone or height, everything here is in good proportion, grand head in no way doggy, correct mouth, neat well set ears & that distinct stop create classic & typical expression, straight front, good rib, distinct tuck-up & well developed quarters all go together to produce the soundest of exhibits, in the peak of conditioning. CC & BOB; 2 Hopkins’ Ch Trufflestaff Monifa Kanika, b/br, another top class exhibit with outstanding virtue, clean lines all round, again nothing overdone on her, real neat package of type & soundness in first class order. My preference was for the tad more bone & rear of 1, splitting hairs is a difficult job. RCC; 3 Simpson’s Ch Briganah Breaking Dawn. GARY HINSLEY |
