Staffordshire Bull Terriers

My thanks go to all the exhibitors some of whom who travelled such long distances to enter the show, I am proud to have had the privilege to look over your dogs. I must acknowledge my stewards Ceri McEwen & Ann Drechsler who were excellent, even making sure water was available in the ring for the dogs during the day, my thanks to them. I was obliged to move the position of the dogs in the ring during the day on account of the sun & hope this did not inconvenience spectators unduly. The following comments may appear slightly harsh & if so I apologise however I can assure you my own dogs are served equally. It is important to be aware of consistent flaws if one is to improve any breeding programme. I was surprised to find too many good quality males with converging canines usually on one side only, although this was uncommon in bitches. Only a couple of open bites & two overshot overall, some bitches had a tendency to be narrow in the muzzle despite having good skulls. There were only one or two so elegant & fine they looked like another breed, plus a few with flat ribs. Forechests seem to be improving again giving the necessary width although some remain shallow in rib & tight in front. Rear movement due to long lower thighs (over angulation), long hocks, small teeth & dippy toplines continue to need improvement especially in the b/br. Saying that I was delighted with my winners & in specific classes the overall quality was good.

MPD (1)

1 Breckell’s Chiswellstaff Lets Dance, b/br. Standing alone in his class, a very nice start to the programme, at barely 7 months this young dog deserved his red card, promising head & good body shape, short coupled with a good topline & rear.

2 Norton’s Tikkurilan Spot On, br/w. Exactly what you expect from this kennel, consistency & quality, well marked clean bitch with good front, nice blunt muzzle, dark pigment, level topline & correct tailset on, feet could be a little tighter but that is all, developing well;

2 Cartwright’s Zakstaff Winterfell, b/br/w. Again from the puppy class with a lovely head & good mouth, tight clean lips & strong underjaw, beautiful width at front, well ribbed back, with nice short hocks, she needs to firm up at the croup a little to reach her full potential;

2 Ashburner’s Jodanzac Joyful Event, br/w. Yes, she is a big powerful girl, but there is so much about her that is correct you can’t ignore it. She has a lovely head with good strong muzzle, good stop, a beautifully shaped ear, powerful neck, sound mature body shape, plenty of bone, lovely feet, & a good strong backend, she tends to lose her topline on the move being slightly long in loin;

3 Funnell’s Powerpack Cherokee, b/br/w.

PGB (6,2)

1 Dyer’s Cardarnbull The Sixth Sense, mahogany br/w. A lovely bitch with clean lines, plenty of strength but still retaining that terrier look about her, good bone, width, lift, nice head, mouth, I would like a bit more breadth of muzzle, good spring of rib, lovely tuck-up & topline which she keeps on the move;

2 Moore’s She’s A Rockstar, b/br. Nicely made clean bitch, shown over fit I would like a little more covering on the rib, good mouth, good dark eye & pigmentation for a blue, good straight front, up to size, nice tuck-up & well muscled rear;

3 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Masud Tumaini.

LB (8,1)

1 Hopwood & Holt’s Boldstock Here I Am, mahogany br/w. One of my favourites today, delightfully marked bitch with a lovely front presentation & at one with her handler, strong yet feminine head, clean bite, well shaped ears, nice short neck, up on her toes, well laid shoulder, nicely sprung rib, correct topline & rear angulation, moved well with drive;

2 Mignano-Fricker & Fricker’s Calavey’s Gonna Be Magical, mahogany br/w. Well balanced girl, not quite the sparkle of first today, but built on similar lines, with nice lift, good front & layback, nice tuck-up, moved & handled well;

3 Manito’s Dynastaff Pure Science, b/br.

OB (9,1)

1 Rogers’ Ch Berrystock Charlies Angel, b/br. Pure quality & balance throughout, very tidy bitch with clean lines, a pleasing head, perfect mouth, good bone, muscle & width, correct angulation fore & aft with a super topline, turned out in good order with nice tuck-up & handled to her best advantage, she well deserves her previous accolades. BOS;

2 Rollin’s Seenworstaff Tea For Two, f/w. Eyecatching very typy mid sized girl, able to free stand naturally square showing all her best attributes, delightful expressive head, gorgeous front & perfect rib & backline, a little more bend of stifle would be an added advantage, moved & handled very well;

3 Stanway’s Mosstrooper Making Mischief at Waystaff, w/r.

VB (3)

1 Hopkins’ Ch Trufflestaff Monifa Kanika, b/br. At 9 years this bitch still gives the breed pause for thought, a joy to go over her, everything right, bang in the middle of the Standard & still a lovely mover & full of spirit, it will be a while before we see her equal. BV;

2 Funnell’s Ch Kewaunee Pocahontas for Powerpack, b/br. Another fine bitch worth her salt with a very nice front, well balanced with a good strong backend, still moving with exuberance at 9 years;

3 Fletcher & Seedhouse’s Granitangel Rough Diamond, b/br.
