STAFFORDSHIRE BULL BOURNEMOUTH 10 Judge: Mr S Robinson STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE BOURNEMOUTH 10 STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER Many thanks to everyone who parted with their hard earned money to allow me the privilege of assessing their animals on the day. Absentees were up due to the current Kennel Cough epidemic so again, thank you to those that turned out. Mouths on the whole were pretty good with just a couple overshot and one wry mouth and one level bite. There were, however, a few exhibits with muzzles so short that the animal could not open its mouth wide enough to assess the rear teeth. A real weakness when considering the breed’s original purpose. My main observation would be that we have a real problem in the Breed with rear angulation. I made a point of placing the rear feet in the correct position and the result was either very straight stifles or over angulation. The former lacking drive to push forward and the latter lacking support when weight is applied from above and no matter how you look at it, incorrect construction. Very few exhibits showed any degree of muscle tone and conditioning in general was poor. On the positive side, in my principle winners I believe that I found typical, balanced and healthy examples of the breed that will hopefully prove to be of benefit to breeding programmes in the future and begin to move us away from some of the exaggerations that we see within the breed. MPD (3,1) 1 Davies’ Braunstaff Joe Calzaghe. Brindle dog looking as a puppy should for this age. Dark eye, neat ears, clean front. Nice length of neck leading to level top line. Would prefer a little more bend in the stifle but moved ok. 2 Goddard’s Kernewekglas Fellowship. A bit of a handful and was not going to play for his handler today which made him hard to assess. Had a nicer head shape than the winner but 1st was a little cleaner all around and move better. PD (4,3) 1 Edgson’s Crossguns Bri’s Boy. Strong headed, standard sized young dog. Dark eye, short muzzle and neat ears. Carrying a bit of puppy fat but moved ok. JD (9,6) 1 Steele’s Wyrefare Storm Warning. Clean looking red dog. Not overdone, straight front and decent head, nice length of neck flowing into a nicely conditioned body with defined tuck up and well muscled rear quarters. Moved well. 2 Williams’ Hubbulls Nebraska. Another Red similar in style to winner but for me the winner was cleaner in outline, fitter and better angulated on the rear allowing for smoother movement 3 Williams’ Gazannlou the Pretender at Bellajazz YD (4,3) 1 Folwell & Morris’ Rowellstaff Mr Ferguson. Standard sized red dog. Nice enough head, dark eye and neat ears. Carrying a little too much weight and like many others today a little straight in the back end. Front is clean enough and he moved OK GD (4,3) 1 Pickston’S Marmaduke My Lord. Standard sized Black Brindle Dog. Strong in the head, very short muzzle, dark eye and neat ears. Wide but straight front, plenty of rib and reasonable top line. PGD (7,2) 1 Tittley’s Willowstaff New Addition at Garwstaff. This Mahogany Brindle dog fits the standard like a glove. Not overdone in any way. Enough head, tight lipped, clean straight front, nice top line and in good condition. Moved well and won this class with ease. 2 Muir & Quinn’s Sherdrew Born to Perform at Maratana. Nice black brindle dog, stronger in head than 1st but not overdone. Nice profile looking front on and not bad from the side either. Topline ok but lost out to the winner in conditioning and movement. 3 Antonio’s Antoniostaff War Lord LD (8,1) 1 Watkins’ Veklorra Flaming Arrow. Lovely looking dog from all angles. Head is clean with a nice muzzle to skull ratio. Front is true, top line is level and angulation is correct both front and back. Good construction allows him to move well and a worthy winner at this level 2 Rhodes Willowstaff Black Marauder. This dog is Top Size and I guess he could be overlooked for that but not today. He is clean from every angle and well put together. Not exaggerated in any way. Good mouth, clean lipped, straight front and well conditioned. For me the angulation and top line of the winner was slightly better but a nice dog nonetheless. 3 Dowse’s Rotherstaff Black Tie OD (5) 1 & DCC Powell’s Foxstaff Positive Magic at Cwmcalon. This was the best of the Dog classes and this dog comfortably the best for me. Top size Black Brindle with a lovely front, enough head with dark eyes and neat ears. Nice neck leading into a beautifully conditioned body and well muscled rear quarters. Angulation for me is spot on and he moves with drive. Really up on his toes and he must surely gain his title before too long. Dog CC 2 Clements Sajojistaff Back in Black. Black Brindle Dog who, from the front on is stunning and undoubtedly worthy of his Ch Title. Classic headpiece, great proportions and every inch a Stafford. In good condition, well muscled and up on his toes. Unfortunately, today he came up against a dog that was better conditioned, more powerful and better moving due to his superior angulation. Still an easy decision to award him the RCC and I can see why these two have swapped places on previous occasions. For me the best two dogs in the country right now. 3 Wiggins & Watkin’s Kewaunee Peta Nocana MPB (10,3) 1 Steele’s Bullhawk Sookie Stackhouse. Beautiful, feminine looking bitch with a bright future. Nice front, nice head with clean lips, dark eye and neat ears. Nice top line and well put together from all angles although I wouldn’t want any more in the stifle. Hopefully she will realise her obvious potential as she develops. 2 Florekova’s Zoellies Thin Lizzy. Similar in style to the winner but not so easy to assess as she needs to be trained for the ring. Looks like a puppy should at this age, not overdone in any area and able to move with ease. Preferred the cleaner outline and better movement of the winner. 3 Parker’s Nettleworth Nitty Gritty PB (6,1) 1 Smith’s Rowellstaff Red Ember at Willowstaff Possibly the surprise package of the day. Fawn bitch that is bang on the standard and beautifully put together. True front with nice shoulder placement, lovely head shape, well proportioned body and good mover. I think that she can trouble the best as she gets a little older, certainly one to watch. 2 Lorekova’s Zoellies Thin Lizzy 3 Morgan & Morgan-Pistor’s Biggleswick What’s On JB (11,5) 1 Smith’s Willowstaff Keep the Faith. Brindle bitch with a nice head, well proportioned in muzzle to skull ratio. Front and rear angulation is good as is her top line. Not as fit as I have come to expect from this Kennel but still an easy winner in this class. 2 Scanlan – Tillcarr Contrary Mary at Olistaff Not unlike the class winner but head has a shorter muzzle and more pronounced stop. I prefer the head proportions of 1 and the better constructed rear quarters of the winner also allowed for better movement. 3 Winwood & Tunnah’s Cursus Summer Storm YB (7,4) 1 Payton’s Sunnystone Party Girl at Tonpay. Strong Brindle Bitch that for me would benefit from a greater level of fitness. She has a decent front, good rib, nice top line and moves well enough. Her head is clean and she looks a nice bitch and deserved her win. 2 Stevenns & Raynsford’s Raynstaff Do You Know Who I Am. Black Bitch with white front. Fitter and more athletic than 1 and not so strong all around but the winner scored better in terms of front and rear construction and movement. 3 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Hasina Bahiti GB (5,4) 1 Hopkins Trufflestaff Hasina Bahiti Brindle Bitch with white front. Standard size, dark eye and neat ears. Nice rib and level top line. Alone in class. PGB (8,3) 1 Turner’s Tidestaff Firecracker Mahogany Brindle that is a surprise package. Not a bitch that jumps out and says look at me but when you do look at her she is very good. Lovely head that is not too short in muzzle, dark eye, neat ears, good length of neck leading to well constructed body. I would prefer to see her fitter but a very nice bitch all the same. 2 Williams’ Gwynford Celtic Gypsy Black Bitch with white blaze to her front. Stronger in the head than 1 and in fitter condition but the winner scored more highly in front and rear angulation which in turn allowed for better movement. 3 Higgins’ Spinnjack Mistletoe Magic for Acrestaf LB (9,2) 1 Smith, Cox & Wagstaff’s Willowstaff Barbed Tongue Liked this Black Bitch a lot and I’m pretty sure that her day for top honours will come. Nice clean front, beautiful head, nice length of neck leading to well put together body with well defined tuck up. Considered her for RCC but having just lost out I’m sure her turn will come. 2 McDonald & Foster’s Tusslestaff Black Fury. Very similar in style and type to 1 and possibly in fitter condition. Movement was on a par with the winner as was overall construction. A lovely bitch but the winner had the edge with her cleaner bite. 3 Gatenby’s Staxofun Delphic Dancer at Kerrisdale OB (5,1) 1 CC & BOB’s Folwell & Morris’ Ch. Rowellstaff Miss PradaI gave this Bitch RCC in 2007 and on that day I felt that she just lost out on conditioning. Not today. For me she rates as one of the best bitches I have seen in 20 years. She looks the part from all angles. Her front is spot on, her rear is too. Her length of back and rib cage are ideal for and her headpiece is gorgeous. She moves with drive and efficiency and on the day was almost impossible to fault. Credit to her owner for getting her into this condition after a litter. Well worthy of her CC and Ch Title and also BOB. 2 Manito’s Dynastaff Miss Complex. Gave this Bitch Best Puppy in 2007 and boy has she lived up to the promise. Similar in style to the winner and not much you can complain about. Beautifully put together Bitch with really sound construction. She ran the CC winner close but on the day I preferred the expression and superior fitness of the winner. I think you will see a lot more of this one and she is well worthy of achieving Ch status. 3 Thomas’ Sunnystone Steel Magnolia Steve Robinson |
